WHEN I was in South Africa during the latter part of 1904, there were three known tin-fields, which may be called the Cape Town, the Bushveld and the Swaziland fields. THE. CAPE TOWN TIN-FIELD. This district is situated near Kuils river, 20 miles west of Cape Town, and 5 miles from Kuils River station on the Cape Town & Stellenbosch Railway. The deposits are in granite, intrusive in the Malmesbury beds, which are supposed to be of Silurian or Cambrian age. The granite, resisting denudation better than the surrounding shales,, has formed low-lying hills, the highest of which, the Bottlelary Berg, is 1,510 ft. above sea-level. , The rock consists of quartz, orthoclase feldspar and biotite mica; tourmaline is also present. The feldspar occurs in large crystals. The rock is generally decomposed on the surface, and the decomposition sometimes extends as deep as 100 ft. This formation-granite intrusive in Silurian shales-extends for many miles to the northeast, but so far as I know the Kuils River deposits are the only ones now known to occur in it, though probably further prospecting will reveal other deposits. This particular discovery was accidental;. alluvial tin being found in the course of boring for oil. The Kuils River Deposit. This comprises both lode and alluvial tin. The lode strikes N. and S., and dips about 30° E. into the hill. It is 5 ft. wide, and composed of dense white quartz, in which pinkish-gray cassiterite is distributed in large crystals. The vein also contains considerable quantities of wolfram. Fig. 1 is a rough plan of the relative positions of the lode and the alluvial deposit, the latter, as shown, following the course of a stream, while the lode crops out on the hillside

To THE average person, the purport of the items and figures on the balance sheet of a mining company are hazy and the real financial condition of the company is cloaked in obscurity. It is also likely that the satisfaction of the stockholder in his investment, as well as the determination of the prospective investor, rests more on the reputation of the company, his confidence in the management, the stated earnings per share and the dividends paid, than on a comprehension of the information contained in the balance sheet. The balance sheet of any company at best can only closely approximate the true financial condition as of a given date. Any item of asset, except cash, can probably be altered if another's viewpoint is applied. It is difficult and expensive to drill and explore an orebody to determine the entire tonnage of ore therein. Those inherent difficulties render it practically impossible to prepare an absolutely correct balance sheet of a mining company. It is possible, however, to present the facts of a mining company more intelligently and comprehensively than is usually done. With this in mind, a balance sheet of an imaginary mining company is submitted, with supporting schedules. The same fundamental principles hold true whether we consider a large or a small company. Less complexity is involved in dealing with the affairs of a smaller company. Therefore, for this purpose, the assumed company operates but two mines and a smelting plant. It has been deemed advisable to introduce the features of the operation of a mine acquired prior to March 1, 1913 and one after that date. The presentation therefore is concerned in one mine with the appraisement as of March 1, 1913 and in the other with the appraisement by reason of discovery. A consequential factor pertains to dividends paid from depletion reserves and therefore free of surtax to the stockholders. While supporting schedules, when necessary, give details of certain items on the balance sheet, it seems desirable to give further explanations with respect to some of them. This seems to be important because some mining companies do not treat the items as indicated on the statements submitted.

"A major geomechanical study was conducted for one of the UAE onshore oil fields with the purpose of studying reservoir rock properties and stress distribution, based on which a 3D coupled reservoir geomechanical model was built. This model was later used for wellbore stability analysis and for analyzing the effect of fractures on future reservoir production performance, including fracture deformation and permeability evolution occurring due to reservoir depletion and resulting changes in local stress field. The subject of this study was a complex fractured Upper Cretaceous carbonate reservoir characterized by high degree of heterogeneity, both vertically and laterally. Wellbore instability related drilling problems were encountered while drilling the wells in this field. The problems were mainly in drilling the horizontal wells, including breakouts and mud losses. Experimental results of laboratory tests are summarized in this paper whereas wellbore stability analysis and formulation of a 3D geomechanical model that was built for that purpose is summarized in a sister paper (Part II).A suite of tests reported includes tensile strength, uniaxial and triaxial compression and permeability under stress at simulated reservoir conditions. All tested rocks have been grouped into twelve test units and reservoir geology, rock types and challenges related to designing a viable sampling and testing program for a big reservoir are discussed first followed by sample selection criteria and details of the testing program. All test units showed brittle behavior at zero confinement and some samples showed similar behavior at low confining stresses. With confining stress increase, the behavior gradually turned to plastic but some samples showed features of ductile behavior even at low confinement.Obtained experimental data have been summarized in the form of strength criteria and correlations. The Mohr-Coulomb strength equations were obtained for each test unit and also for the averaged values. It was noticed that triaxial compressive strength (TCS) increases with decreasing porosity or increasing density but their influence on TCS is getting smaller with confining pressure increase. Good correlation of porosity and density with Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), friction angle, cohesion and tensile strength has been noticed and there was an increasing trend between the confining pressure and TCS. Rock type (mud or grain supported) was not influencing the TCS as much as porosity and density and the two lithologies encountered affected TCS approximately in the same way. These results and correlations are summarized and explained in this paper. They were further used in the numerical modelling part (Part II) of this paper, Hozayen et al. (2015). It is also concluded that rock lithology is not a decisive factor and mechanical properties of tested rocks should be rather considered dependent on porosity and permeability. This helped greatly in reducing the number of tests that had to be performed."

The 3-D regular block model used for long term mine planning at Hamersley Iron did not fulfil the requirements for short term mine planning in terms of accurate representation of geological structures, contacts and boundaries in the orebodies. A computer model, based on zone plans, is being created as a single orebody model for all phases of mine planning. The zone plan is the primary interface between the geologists and mining engineers. It is essentially a bench plan at mid-bench height showing geological structure, material type boundaries, the grade and physical characteristics of ore blocks. The method allows for the dilution of ore zones by waste material. The stratiform nature of the orebodies allows zones of varying grade to be readily delineated on the plans. The Zone Plan Model (ZPM) is the interface between geological and mine planning computer systems. It is the basis of all mine planning with applications including long and short term mine plans, reconciliations, general ore reserve estimations, pit design and general model enquiries. The system was designed to be user driven. The user has complete control at all times as all computer generated data are fed back to the user who may then elect to override the computer. Various controls were built into the system to ensure model validity and integrity. The system has proved to be invaluable as a tool for users with little or no computing experience.

The manufacture of zinc oxide directly from the ore is one of the most important contributions that America has made to the metallurgy of zinc. Heretofore, this has been done chiefly for the production of zinc and zinc-lead pigments, and the method has been known as the Wetherill process. While that term may properly be applied to the process for pigment manufacture, it must be recognized that the principles of the process are of far wider application; and that there is going to be wider application in the immediate future is more than an expectation. I have in mind the use of the process as a method of igneous concentration. Igneous concentration is broader in its scope than the Wetherill process, for it may be done in the blast smelting furnace, or in the re-verberatory, or by other means. Igneous concentration is a rather clumsy term, and I prefer to introduce the new generic expression of "zinc burning," which is convenient, readily understood, and precise, for in all cases the zinc oxide is reduced to metallic form, is volatilized and is then burned to zinc oxide, the latter happening, however, after the zinc has been separated from the residue of the ore. As previously indicated, zinc burning may be done either in blast or reverberatory smelting, the gangue of the ore being scorified and drawn off as slag, while other metallic minerals are reduced to matte or metal. Such processes have heretofore been practised on fairly large scales. Thus, F. L. Bartlett smelted zinc ores at Con City, Colo., in specially designed blast furnaces, wherein the smelting column was only about 18 in. high. Such a limitation was necessary in order to prevent zinky accretions in the shaft of the furnace, which in course of time would have interfered with its operation. In running the Bartlett furnaces it was easy to bar them off, indeed, to poke right down into the smelting zone, and keep things going freely. Some iron blast furnaces in Virginia and the spiegeleisen furnaces of the New Jersey Zinc Co. afford other examples of zinc burning in blast-furnace smelting, although in their cases the happening is incidental rather than a primary purpose. Just as zinc may be burned off in a blast furnace, so also may it be done in a reverberatory. SIX weeks ahead of schedule, the International Nickel Co. of Canada Ltd. has brought a 30-mile rail line into the newly born town of Thompson, Manitoba. Its construction spurs the development of a rich new mining region slated to become the world's second largest nickel-producing area-exceeded only by Inco's Sudbury, Ont., workings. Two mines, the Thompson and the Moak Lake, will be opened to meet International Nickel's scheduled annual production goal of 385 million lb of refined nickel by 1961. Accomplishment of this aim will mean an additional 75 million lb of the metal available to consumers. In addition, stepped-up out- put of Inco's Sudbury holdings may increase this figure by another 25 million lb. INTRODUCTION MINERAL deposits of Salmo map-area (Figure 1) have aroused the interest of prospectors for more than a half-century. Properties within the map-area have produced lead, zinc, silver, tungsten, and gold. Sheep Creek mining camp ranks fifth in the Province in the total production of gold, but during recent years interest has been concentrated upon base metals, and meticulous prospecting and exploration have resulted in the discovery of many large zinc-lead orebodies. PREVIOUS WORK Geological investigations of the region were begun long ago, and it is interesting to trace the development of ideas with our increasing knowledge of the geology of this complex area. The first geological examination of the rocks of Salmo map-area was made in 1859-60 by H. Bauerman (1), who was employed as geologist accompanying the first international Boundary Survey. Bauerman examined the rocks exposed along Pend d'Oreille river and published a section indicating that the sedimentary rocks are probably of Palaeozoic age, and are intruded by granite of unknown age. McConnell and Brock(2), in 1894 - 1900, carried out the reconnaissance mapping of the West Kootenay Sheet, on which they outlined the Mesozoic rocks of the Rossland Beaver Mountain volcanic groups that they believed rested unconformably upon the sedimentary rocks to the southeast, which they regarded as of Palaeozoic age.

Nitric acid has long been known as an effective oxidant. Nitric acid leaching is characterised by highly favourable kinetics. Process development was impeded due to the corrosive nature of the process, limited knowledge of acid recycle and complex reactions which are still not fully understood. In 1981, Arseno Processing Ltd (APL), began development of the so-called Arseno process. The technology targeted nitric acid oxidation of refractory gold ores and concentrates whose refractoriness was due to the presence of sulphide minerals. APL lodged patents in United States, Australia, Canada and several other countries covering the basic chemistry, the overall process, and reactor design. The name Arseno led to the misunderstanding that the process was only applicable to arsenic-bearing material. The name was therefore changed to the Redox process in 1988. Having played an important role in the development of Redox from 1986, SASOX recognised the great potential of the process and purchased the process in 1990. SASOX owns all the patents and other Redox proprietary know-how, licensing agreements in force, and is committed to the ongoing development and commercialisation of the Redox technology. Minproc has been granted specific marketing and engineering rights to the Redox pro_cess.

"INTRODUCTIONFlotation of mineral particles by cationic surfactants – namely alkyl amines and their derivatives – is finding ever growing application in processing of various ores and in quality refinement of the benefication end products, iron concentrates for example. In the recent years application of cationic collectors - alkylmorpholines - enabled the development of new highly efficient procedure of water-soluble mineral processing, being also the one with low energy consumption. This procedure is a reverse flotation of carnallite from bay salts of salt-pans and from carnallite ores.The efficiency of cationic SAS influence depends upon colloid-chemical state of the collector in flotation liquid phase, especially if the latter comprises mineral salts. Availability of clayey impurities or slime particles of iron oxide in cation flotation feed, which actively sorb the cationic collector, deteriorate considerably the cation flotation performances. In Halurgy Institute the investigations of cation flotation under potash and carnallite ore processing have been carried out, and new reagent modes, enhancing cationic surfactants sorption at mineral particles, have been developed. Application of new reagents enables one to decrease considerably the consumption of expensive cationic collectors and to enhance the floatability of coarse mineral particles."

The 1982 recession set the US mining and metals industries reeling. Will the oncoming recession of 1991 hit as hard? Probably not, thanks to a shallower downturn, a weaker dollar and remarkable lower costs. Effects of the last recession That the 1982 recession was traumatic to the American mining and metals industry is an understatement. Quantities of metals consumed dropped. Metals prices fell despite continuing general inflation. The resulting real gross revenues of producers of each of the major metals plunged, in the trough of 1982, to levels one-fourth to two-thirds of those of the peak of 1979 (Table 1). By contrast, most industries in the United States were not hit anywhere nearly as hard. Real GNP, the aggregate of all production, slipped only 1 % from 1979 to 1982. Metals are most sensitive to the business cycle because of their applications. All metals but gold are raw materials to downstream industries. Raw materials are victims of strong fluctuations. This is because buying industries try to hold high inventories in boom periods when goods are in short supply. They reduce inventory levels in buyers markets when suppliers have idle capacity and raw materials are in ample supply.

GENERAL BACKGROUND The first mention of the presence of bauxite in the mesozoic series of north-west Sardinia (fig. 1) is owed to Oosterbaan, a Dutch geologist, who carried out a geological survey of the area in the ninetten thirties. A more detailed study of the mesozoic series was attempted in the fifties by Pecorini and other, who concentrated particularly upon the stratigraphy of the bauxitic horizons, through examination of the various outcrops. In the sixties a pining company, Monte Amiata S.p.A., turned its attention to a section of the deposit outcropping near Olmedo and, considering it to be of some promise, carried out prospecting works consisting essentially of various trenches, some bore holes, a few adit and a. layout plan for the preparation and execution of trial exploitation. The results, although positive, did not convince the company's shareholders to continue the exploration. This report, which is intended as a new contribution to knowledge of the Sardinian bauxite deposit, takes into account the information acquired not only from a drilling prospection begun in 1979 in connection with the SOMIT-PROGEMISA joint venture, but also the results of structural studies and numerous chemical, mineralogical and

The function of a thickener is to optimise and accelerate the process of gravity sedimentation. The desired end product (be that maximised concentrated solids or clarified liquid) determines how the thickener is designed and operated.Significant internal research, together with extensive on-site piloting, by Outotec has resulted in the determination that the application of the appropriate amount and type of shear to hindered settling aggregates can result in a substantial change to the sedimentation process. A new patented technology, called shear enhanced thickening (SET), has been developed. SET results in considerable design implications for full-scale thickeners, including a substantial reduction in required footprint and/or significant increases in underflow density.The development of SET, combined with laboratory and pilot scale verification, will be discussed along with the introduction of this technology to a number of full-scale thickeners. Transport to and handling of iron ore at Port Hedland, Western Australia, results in the generation of airborne particulates that contribute to the atmospheric dust load, with concerns about potential local environmental impacts (eg mangrove swamps) and possible human health implications. Mineral and chemical characteristics of the Background soil samples were contaminated with particles of iron ore as martite octahedra and grains of micro-platy hematite as detected by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in the 2.5 - 10 ¦m and 10 - 50 ¦m size fractions. Fossilized wood fragments similar to those observed in Yandicoogina fines ore were also detected in some background soil samples. With a predicted increase in demand of channel iron deposits (CID) ores and the inherently dusty Marra Mamba ores (eg West Angelas, MAC, OB29/30/35, Marandoo), in conjunction with particulate emissions from hot-briquetted iron and direct reduced iron (HBI/DRI) processing plants, there is the potential for additional sources of anthropogenic dust to contribute to background levels. Mineralogical and chemical characterisation of the entire range of particulates that could be produced is necessary for a complete understanding of their potential impact on the local environment.

Over the years, improvements have been made in the recovery of nonferrous metals, including improvements in the areas of mineral processing, pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy to extract cobalt as a byproduct from host minerals containing mainly nickel, copper and associated precious metals. At present, the technological emphasis is on solvent extraction coupled with electrowinning (SX-EW) for lateritic sources of supply within the Southern Hemisphere, such as in Australia and New Caledonia. Although sulfide-bearing ores, such as those found in Canada and Russia, will serve as a viable long-term source for cobalt, a ubiquitous metal, the future trend is anticipated to be in the implementation of compact and efficient SX-EW facilities that apply state-of-the -art innovation with environmental compliance This paper serves to collate the known practices for the recovery of market-grade cobalt by means of electrowinning from either an aqueous sulfate medium or chloride medium after upstream leaching, solvent-extraction and solution-purification procedures. For completeness, other commercial production techniques for the recovery of cobalt as a sulfide or oxide product are included in the summary of current cobalt processing practices.

The LeadtZinc Concentrator at Mount lsa treats all the lead-zinc-silver ore from the Mount Isa Mine and some of the ore from the Hilton Mine. This concentrator was commissioned in June 1966 and total lead-zinc-silver ore treatment was transferred from the Mount rsa's original No 1 Concentrator in May 1967. Plant capacity is around 5 x 106 t/y.There have been three phases of major plant modifications since commissioning:1. replacement and upgrading of the flotation section in 1979; 2. upgrading of the crushing plant and installation of a heavy medium hydrocyclone plant in 1983 for ore preconcentration, and; 3. doubling ball milling capacity and a further upgrading of the flotation section in 1992.Other developments have included the installation of flotation columns and Jameson cells.The evolution of milling practice since 1955 has been reported by Davey and Slaughter (1970), Bartrum, Dobrowolski and Schache (1977), Fiedler and Munro (1984) and Espinosa-Gomez el al (1989).Lead concentrate is smelted in Mount Isa while zinc concentrate and bulk concentrate (locally called Low Grade Middlings or LGM) are railed to Townsville and shipped to custom electrolytic zinc plants and ISP smelters.

MANGANESE ore is a true jack-of-all trades among industrial minerals, its only possible rival being iron ore. It is used in porcelain enamel, dry batteries, building brick, glazed pottery, floor tile, plastics, welding rods, chemicals, and varnish. You may be reading this through spectacles decolorized with manganese, and the light bulb above you contains some of this element. GEOLOGY Nearly all commercial manganese oxide deposits are of secondary origin; that is, they are concentrated by weathering from other manganese minerals more sparsely distributed in veins. The oxide minerals usually form irregular masses but in some places (Russia) they occur as beds of varying thickness and purity. Some manganese oxide bodies occur in soft gravel or clay formations but in other places the minerals are found in the form of veins and rounded nodules in limestone and other hard rocks. The geologic features of manganese deposits closely resemble those of iron deposits. Classification of the deposits is shown in the following table: I.
