The Mount Leyshon breccia complex is located on an east-west trending contact between Cambrian metasediments (Puddler Creek Formation) and the Ordovician Mt. Leyshon granite, within the Lolworth-Ravenswood block. Detailed mapping of basement, breccia and igneous unit geometries, crosscutting relationships and resolution of complex chronological relation- ships indicates that the Mt. Leyshon breccia complex should be reinterpreted as a number of intrusive igneous and breccia phases. This is in contrast to a previously published account of a largely extrusive geological setting. A complex structural history dominated by strike-slip faulting is preserved within the basement units and is responsible for controlling the location and geometry of the breccia complex. The breccia complex has been divided into brecciated "basement", "main pipe breccia" and an "interactive magma/breccia sequence". Main pipe breccia (the most voluminous unit within the complex) has been re-interpreted as an intrusive breccia, rather than an extrusive or vent fill as previously proposed. This is based on the following evidence: 1. the facies characteristics of the main pipe breccia, 2. the presence of a progression from cohesive basement through to mixed breccia, 3. minor basement block rotation during breccia complex formation, and 4. the partial structural control on the main pipe breccia. No unambiguous evidence exists for pyroclastic facies, although the fine breccia variant commonly contains "accretionary structures", very similar in appearance to those formed during pyroclastic processes. In view of 1. above, they are interpreted to be the product of particle accretion during upward movement of fragmental material, although an origin due to altera- tion cannot be completely discounted. heir occurrence in the main pipe breccia indicates that their presence within a rock unit is not necessarily diagnostic of nvroclastic nroeesses.

IN considering the postwar demand and supply of minerals it first must be decided whether to treat the subject in national or in global terms. Minerals and metals move in international commerce on a grand scale, measured both in bull, and weight, being exceeded only by foodstuffs. As examples are oil, coal, iron ore, pyrites, manganese, chrome, potash, phosphates, bauxite, and a score of other metals, concentrates, and ores. The highly industrialized nations, the United States excepted, are dependent upon imported supplies for mineral raw materials and metals. The countries of production are minor consumers, so are exporters. Such products also pass more freely in trade than do most commodities. There are fewer tariff walls because there is no important mining industry to protect and the commodity has to be imported in any event.

RECENTLY Welber and Webelerl reported that during the annealing of fatigued copper no energy was released, but that energy was absorbed in the range of temperature 250" to 400°C. In view of the fact that strain hardening occurs during the fatigue of copper, this result was surprising and it seemed desirable to check the measurements. This note describes measurements made by a different technique which indicates that energy is stored during the fatigue of copper. Two test bars with gage length ¾ in. in diameter and 6 in. long were machined from OFHC copper and annealed in vacuum for 1 hr at 600°C. These were fatigued to fracture in an Avery pulsator at a frequency of 2000 cycles per min. The first specimen fractured after 0.25x10 cycles under a push-pull

It is desired in these notes to record a vein-phenomenon certainly unique in the writer's limited experience, and, as it seems to him, sufficiently rare to be worthy of mention. In the little mining camp of Forbestown, situated in the Sierra Nevada of California, it was announced one day, when the miners of the Cold Banks mine came off shift, that "washed gravel" had been struck on the 265-foot level. To those acquainted with that section and the character of the mine (a gold-bearing quartz-vein) this was a somewhat startling announcement; for, prolific as the State is, we are not in the habit of mixing up promiscuously our vein- and placer-deposits. However, the statement proved to have some foundation. The mine is located at an altitude of about 2700 feet, on the brink of one of the great canyons of erosion characteristic of the drainage of this range. A lateral ravine cuts the vein at right angles, thus making its general strike approximately parallel to the canyon at this point, and with a variable dip of from 20 to 40 degrees towards the canyon. The strong, well-defined vein, often 20 feet wide and more, presents nothing to distinguish it particularly from scores of others in the State, unless if be considered peculiar in the highly crystalline character of its quartz and the nature of the enclosing country-rock, which is metamorphic in the extreme, very hard, devoid of lamination, and in bedding so obscure that it might easily pass—at least on superficial examination—for one of the basic eruptives. Near by in the district can be found a series of slates common to the gold-belt of this range, and within the limit of the company's property is an intrusion of an acid eruptive. On an adjoining claim a granite shows itself. The mine is opened through an inclined shaft sunk on the vein. The ore carries both free gold and sulphurets, the greater part of its value

It is well known that manganese will desulfurize molten iron through the formation of manganese sulfide, which, being only slightly soluble in the metal, rises to and enters the slag where it remains as such (mixer slag) or is converted partly or wholly to calcium sulfide (basic open-hearth slag). The reaction by which manganese sulfide is formed is Mn + FeS = MnS + Fe. This reaction is generally considered to be reversible, although McCancel states that such is not the case. The experimental work was carried out to confirm the results of Roh12 as to the reversibility of the reaction. Six trials are herein considered. In each 200 gm. of electrolytic iron free from manganese and sulfur were melted in a pure zirconia crucible in a carbon resistance electric furnace. To the melted iron in runs 2, 3 and 4 metallic manganese and manganese sulfide were added to give 1, 2 and 4 per cent. manganese respectively, with 0.50 per cent, of sulfur in each. In runs 5, 6 and 7, metallic manganese and iron sulfide to give the same proportions of. manganese and sulphur as in runs 2, 3 and 4, were added. The Bullfrog and Montgomery-Shoshone deposits, near Beatty, NV, have a combined drill-indicated reserve of 15.8 Mt (17.4 million st) of ore. Average grade is 3.5 g/t (0.103 oz per st) gold and 8.2 g/t (0.24 oz per st) silver. The deposits occur in Miocene volcanic rocks that underwent large-scale movement within a detachment-faulted terrane. The principal host to gold mineralization is a strongly welded rhyolitic tuff that experienced brittle deformation during plate movement. Open space fractures and breccia were filled with quartz, calcite, and adularia accompanied by lesser pyrite, gold, and acanthite. Gold occurs as micrometer-sized particles within and adjacent to the low-angle fault and along associated listric-normal and tear faults. The Bullfrog and Montgomery-Shoshone are volcanic-hosted, detachment fault-related, epithermal quartz calcite stockwork gold deposits. Bullfrog's minable reserve is 13 Mt (14.3 million st) of ore grading 3.8 g/t (0.11 oz per st) of gold. At Montgomery-Shoshone, 2.7 Mt (3 million st) minable tons at 2.5 g/t (0.072 oz per st) are present. Preproduction stripping has begun at the Bullfrog ore body. A 7.7-kt/d (8500-stpd) carbon-in-pulp (CIP) mill is under construction. In 1990, Bond Gold expects to be producing about 6.2 t/a (200,000 oz per year) of gold.

Iron removal is a common procedure in hydrometallurgy of non-ferrous metallic ores. Chemical precipitation and solvent extraction are currently the main methods employed for separation of iron from copper leach solution. However, chemical precipitation methods have the problem of producing large amounts of iron precipitates, and/or requiring high temperature and high pressure conditions for precipitation. The precipitates are difficult to separate from the solution. Emulsification is a general problem for solvent extraction, which causes loss of extractants and contamination of the electrolyte. A common problem for solvent extraction and chelating ion exchange processes is the difficult iron stripping process. Therefore, finding an efficient and environmentally friendly method for iron removal is of great significance. In this paper, new processes of using ion exchange resins to remove iron from copper leach solution have been investigated. Salicylic acid, amino carboxylic acid, amino phosphonic acid and hydroxy-oxime resins were employed to adsorb iron from a simulated copper leach solution containing 40 g/L of Cu2+ and 36 g/L of Fe3+. It was found that a hydroxy-oxime resin, named Z-Fe, has excellent adsorption selectivity on Fe3+. Desorption behavior of the resin was studied by two step elution using dilute H2SO4 and oxalic acid solution, respectively. After optimizing the adsorption-elution processes, the extent of removal of iron from the simulated copper leach solution using resin Z-Fe was 90%, while copper recovery could reach 100% in closed circuit processing.

OVERVIEW Like many older metropolitan areas across the U.S., the Greater Cleveland area is served by a combination of separate sanitary sewers and combined sanitary-stormwater sewers. In 1966, a Master Plan was implemented by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (District) to minimize pollutant overflows into adjoining Lake Erie and its tributary rivers and streams, that would occur during wet weather events. One component of the Master Plan was to reduce the load on combined sewers by constructing new conveyances to intercept separate sanitary flows and convey them to upgraded regional waste water treatment plants for priority treatment. As part of a 15-year program to construct 74 km (46 miles) of new interceptors, the West Leg Interceptor (WLI) Project intercepts flows from four decommissioned waste water treatment plants (WWTPs), and conveys those flows to the new Southwest Interceptor (SWI), which conveys the flows to the Southerly Treatment Plant, a tertiary level treatment facility. The WLI Project was built in sections to permit decommissioning of the WWTPs as each segment of the interceptor system was completed and put into service. Flows from the first of the four WWTPs was converted to the WLI in November, 1992; the final connection was achieved in July 1994. The WLI comprises 9.1 km (5.7 miles) of 21 to 29 m (70 to 95 ft) deep mainline interceptor tunnel, four vortex drop structures, approximately 2 km (1.3 miles) of shallow tunneled connector sewer to the mainline, approximately 2.9 km (1.8 miles) of open cut connector sewers, five construction work shafts (not including one work shaft constructed under SWI Contract 6 at the north end of the WLI), and 15 access shafts.

(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) ON Mar. 28, 1913, the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers unanimously adopted the following Minute: JOHN FRITZ, one of the most distinguished of American mechanical and metallurgical engineers, won that position by the force of innate genius, indomitable industry, unstained integrity and unfailing sympathy, and generosity towards his fellow-men. Self-educated in the hard school of practice, he appreciated nevertheless the advantages of technical instruction and discussion, and evinced this appreciation both by his membership and lively interest in this and other similar societies, and by his munificent gifts to engineering education at Lehigh University, and his long and faithful service us a Trustee of that institution. . As one of the foremost of those American engineers who, through their brilliant inventions and practical skill. developed here -the modern iron blast-furnace -and rolling-mill, and introduced and perfected the Bessemer process and other improvements in the manufacture of steel, Mr. Fritz contributed mightily to the chief departments of that industrial progress which characterized the Nineteenth Century. Proud of his great achievements, we cannot but rejoice over his long and fruitful life, crowned with a peaceful death ; but our praise and thanks are mingled with sorrow, as we recall the kindly face which we shall see no more on earth, and the loyal friendship and spontaneous good-will which led the love of his generation, and the reverence of the generation which followed, to regard him universally as " Uncle John Fritz." That. summary, though only an outline, is a good portrait ; and in the present sketch, we shall do no more than supply some details of the likeness, and some elements of the background.

FOR the benefit of those of our members who may be asked what they know about Mr. Hoover's connec-tion with the Kaiping coal mines in China and who will naturally wish to appear thoroughly well informed on the subject, we reprint below an authoritative state-ment, recently made to the Japan Advertiser, by Tang Shao-yi, former premier of China, now retired to his country home at Tang Chia. "Information has reached me at my retreat that persons in America and China insinuate that Herbert Hoover acted dishonorably in dealings involving the Chinese Engineering and Mining Company a quarter of a century ago. I be-lieve myself the only Chinese living who was closely iden-tified with that company during Mr. Hoover's connection. My uncle founded the company and my family always has been a large shareholder and, therefore, I possess direct knowledge of its history. "I am actuated in this statement by a sense of justice and also gratitude for Mr. Hoover's acts in rescuing my family during the Boxer uprising. Mr. Hoover's record in China is clean and honorable, highly creditable and in many ways remarkable. Legal action brought in London in 1905 occurred after Mr. Hoover left the company. There were not any charges against Mr. Hoover and he was not a de-fendant in the lawsuit, but an important witness whose testimony helped the Chinese shareholders to save their property.

MR. ECKLEY B. COXE, in his able and interesting paper on " The Preparation of Small Sizes of Anthracite,"* read and discussed at the Glen Summit Meeting, October, 1891, refers to the reputed immense amount of coal contained in the culm-banks, which are the unsightly accompaniment of every mining operation in the anthracite coal-regions. Mr. Coxe thinks the available amount and value greatly exaggerated, giving among his reasons (1) the spoiling of the culm by mixing with other refuse; (2) its deterioration; (3) its destruction by fire ; and (4) frequent failures to realize expectations as to the size of the banks. These points are undoubtedly important factors in determining the advisability of working any individual bank, but they have a varying influence in the several regions, some prevailing more in one than in another. Although the amount of fuel lying waste in these banks is still an uncertain and undetermined quantity, yet no one can visit the Schuylkill region without being impressed with the fact that a considerable amount of culm, too valuable to be left merely to the mercy of the elements, surrounds and encumbers each site of an old or present colliery operation. The rapid increase in the number of washeries, and the demand for leases on old culm-banks, shows that, in the Schuylkill region at least, the question of deterioration doès not play an important part. The Phosphate Recovery Corporation operates three flotation plants, NOS. 1 and 2 concentrators about three miles northeast of Mulberry, Florida, and No. 3 plant at Wales, Tennessee. These plants represent the first commercial phosphate flotation operation and are also believed to be the largest nonmetallic flotation operation in the world at the present time. The details of this paper will be confined to plant No. 2, this being the newest and largest concentrator in Florida, and the flow sheet being practically the same as at plant No. 1. The No. 3 plant has been operated but a short time and has been shut down since December, 1932, on account of the decrease in phosphate rock production. The phosphate washers usually are located centrally on a known deposit so that about two hundred acres of ground can be mined economically to each washer location. The washers are moved to new areas when the distance becomes too great for economical pumping. The flotation plants are built either adjacent to a washer, so that current debris may be utilized, or on the site of a former washer where there is sufficient accumulated debris available for mining, and the flotation plants must also be moved from time to time. Most of the water used in the Florida flotation plants is recovered after passing through a circulating system where most of the fine SUSpended matter is settled out, but some make-up water is obtained from deep wells near the plant. Power is obtained from the Tampa Electric Co. through the distribution facilities of the International Agricultural Corporation. Flotation concentrate is hauled from the plant by trolley over the International Agricultural Corporation's trolley system, to the drying plant at Prairie, one mile northwest of Mulberry. AN ESSENTIAL mental equipment for planning exploration is the fullest possible. knowledge of the way in which the orebodies occur in the region to be explored, also the realization that in no mining district is this knowledge complete, and that new: facts of importance will he revealed to the explorer in every exploration if he is in the proper frame of mind to grasp them. The geology, of the ore deposits of the Gogebic Range for a long, time was thought to be relatively simple, but work in recent years, by several men, has proved that this is not the case. We now realize that we are far from knowing all the factors that have resulted in the localization of ore deposits. For example, we have long known that the intersections of the dikes and. the foot wall were favorable places to look for ore, but only within the last few years have we learned that there are several horizons' in the various members, well north of the foot wall, that are likely to carry ore. The influence of the numerous cross faults on orebodies is not known or appreciated beyond a general realization that they are important. Just how they may be favorable or unfavorable to the localization of ore is not known. Such elementary information as the positions of these faults is just beginning to appear on the mine maps. Such being the condition, one can hardly overestimate the importance to the various operators and fee owners of careful studies of conditions in their properties for the purpose of assuring themselves that they are not missing valuable ore-that they are doing all the exploration that their situation demands in order to secure maximum returns. Valuable ores have been missed in the past and will be missed in the future. Only with a complete knowledge of all the factors that have united to produce ore could anything else be expected. The purpose of this paper is to call attention to these facts briefly and to suggest a few of the principles that should guide effective exploration. The foremost principle is that the man who starts out with the idea that he knows all about the mine geology of the Gogebic Range is starting with a heavy handicap.

(written discussion?).- We are indebted to Captain Lucas for an interesting contribution to the literature of the salt-dome oil fields, and especially for his suggestion that a more aggressive method -of prospecting be adopted. The occasional discovery of new fields on, the Gulf Coast is in itself sufficient to show that the oil possibilities of the region are by no means exhausted, and those who have studied the area most thoroughly are the most optimistic regarding its future. Nevertheless, the search for new fields, according to present methods, involves the expenditure of great sums of money annually, for the proportion of dry holes to producing wells drilled yearly in the Gulf Coast region is much' greater than in most areas, even if all the wells drilled in what is commonly regarded as proved territory are included. Not only are the present methods of locating new domes very uncertain, but when a dome is discovered there is no assurance that it will be oil-bearing; or, if so, whether the oil occurs in the cap-rock, in the sands above it, or in some small isolated lens of sand far down on the flanks of the salt mass. As Captain Lucas points out, about all we positively know is that the domes are there and that some of them are oil-bearing; their origin is a matter of controversy and the original source of the oil is conjectural. Under these conditions, it is not surprising that the search for oil is conducted more or less blindly and that dry holes are common. Many wells are drilled each year in an endeavor to find oil at depths of 2000 or 3000 ft. (609 to 914 m.) or less, in locations which most geologists would condemn without hesitation. As Captain Lucas suggests, the money spent in this way might be used to far better advantage in, drilling one deep well in a carefully selected locality. Opinions may differ as to whether such a, well would find oil, and many geologists will probably believe that the chances are against it, yet all will agree that the boring, whether it finds oil or not, will probably throw light on the origin of the domes and on the source and mode of accumulation of the oil, and will therefore be of great interest, not only to the scientist, but to the oil operator.

THE copper-bearing rocks of Lake Superior are composed of a series of metamorphic rocks, comprised under the names of amygdaloid and conglomerate, in which the copper and silver found with them are pseudomorphs. These rocks, generally, have well-defined walls which cause them to separate easily. Generally, the country rock is sterile, but it occasionally rises into the copper-bearing rock, and then carries copper. Usually, the amygdaloids carry copper, and the greenstones or melaphyres which encase them do not. There is a very generally received opinion that the copper in these beds occurs in shoots. This does not appear to be proved, though the opinion seems to have some foundation from the experience of the Calumet & Hecla Mine, where a body of poor rock has been left, which, on the mine map, shows a general direction. The theory may be true of that individual mine, but too little work has been done in the other mines to draw any decided conclusion. The copper is very unequally disseminated in the rock, if any given piece be taken as an example, but, if the whole copper-bearing series be considered, its distribution is uniform. It may prove that there are certain directions in which the copper has been deposited more abundantly than in others, and these may be found to correspond with certain geological causes, but up to the present time the knowledge gained is not sufficient to warrant any general conclusion. These rocks are supplemented by a series of true fissure veins, of which there are several systems, making the amount of native copper very large. Unfortunately, except in the fissure veins, known as "mass-mines," the copper is so scattered through the rock, and is in such a fine state of division, that, although it is not always difficult to mine, it is always difficult to dress it sufficiently too make it pay. The metal is so uniformly distributed through these copper-bearing rocks that detached pieces, called " float," are found in digging on almost any land in the country.
