THE producers of this liquid metal call it quicksilver, while the consumer generally refers to it as mercury. It is one of he seven metals that were known to the ancients. These seven were gold, silver, iron, copper, quicksilver, lead, and tin. Other metals were sometimes accidentally alloyed with some of these, but it was not until 1490 that antimony, for example, was discovered and identified as a separate metal. It is not surprising that quicksilver should have been known in ancient or even in prehistoric times, as globules of the native metal often occur in the outcrops of the ore. Furthermore, the first man to build a fire on an outcropping of quicksilver ore would probably have found globules of quicksilver in the cold ashes of his fire after it burned out. The inability to pick up the globules with the fingers would excite interest and an attempt to gather it in shells or gourds to be exhibited and traded. The ore of quicksilver is the red sulfide, cinnabar, which has been mined and used as the pigment vermilion since before the beginning of written history. In recorded history, quicksilver is first mentioned in documents by Aristotle, 384-322 B.C. Theophrastus, in 315 B.C., credited the Athenian, Callias, with the invention of methods to beneficiate cinnabar in 415 B.C. In China also there are records antedating Christ which mention both vermilion paint and the fluid metal. From these early records, it seems certain that not only was cinnabar used as a pigment in those days but also that the metal was reduced from the ore and was used for amalgamation, for gilding, and for medicinal purposes. The estimated reserve of the phosphatic soils at the Sukulu hills region of Uganda upto a depth of 60 meters is of the order of 200 million tonnes and analyses 10-12% P2O5. A 5-tonne sample of the phosphatic soil was received at the National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML), India for beneficiation studies. The ore occurred as a naturally degraded soil deposit and the slime contained earthy lateritic minerals which made it extremely sticky. Microscopic examination revealed the presence of limonite, magnetite (martitised), hematite and goethite as major minerals along with apatite and quartz. Presence of clay was indicated by earthy smell on moistening the sample. It was observed that getting rid of the slime was as important for adequate beneficiation of the ore, as it was difficult. Earlier studies on samples of the same ore at the NML and abroad established that it was necessary to pass the ore through a series of three stages of desliming, each consisting of a step of rigorous attrition scrubbing followed by hydrocycloning, for effective elimination of the sticky slimy coating which stubbornly adhered to mineral grains. Studies were carried out at the NML in two phases to develop a flowsheet for beneficiation of the phosphatic soil. In the first phase, reproducibility of the results obtained by employing a flowsheet developed abroad was confirmed along with suggesting some modifications of the flowsheet. Then 200 kg. of concentrate was produced following the recommended flowsheet for evaluation of its suitability for production of fertilisers. To remove the limonitic slimy coating, which stubbornly adheres to the other mineral grains, it was necessary to subject the ROM ore, after screening out the +840 micron size fraction which contained only 1.75% P2O5 , to three stages of hydrocycloning each preceded by attrition scrubbing. Then only conventional beneficiation techniques could be effectively employed to upgrade the ore.

THE conventional wire saw, introduced in the slate district of Pennsylvania by the Bureau of Mines in 1927, and used thereafter with remarkable success, consists of a three-strand steel cable having a diameter of 3/1 6 or 1/4 in. The equipment, methods used, and accomplishments have been described in previous reports.1-7 Similar wire saws have been used extensively in Europe, in quarries and in shaping blocks and slabs. During the period 1932-1937, competition in European marble quarries was keen, prices were declining, and orders were not abundant. When orders were received, there was generally an urgent call for speedy delivery. Because of the diversification of demands, it was impossible. to maintain in stock marbles of the color, size, and thickness called for,, therefore the material generally had to be fabricated after the order was received. The wire saw enabled stone mills to fill. such, orders promptly. With skillful handling, 7/8-in. slabs could be cut accurately and rapidly with this equipment. It was found, however, that, as the three-strand wire became worn, the cutting speed dropped rapidly and the cut became less accurate. To overcome these difficulties the junior author of this paper, after much experimentation, developed a new type of wire consisting of a single ribbon-shaped strand, twisted as shown in Fig. I. To ensure straight sawing, the twist of the ribbon is reversed from right to left and vice versa every 25 ft. The reversal of the [ ] twist is shown in Fig. 2. This is not a new feature; it has been used to advantage with the three-strand wire both in Europe and America for several years. However, some difficulties arise in splicing the three-strand reverse-twist wire, and the claim is made that cutting is less accurate as the wire becomes worn. A flowsheet for the recovery of nickel and cobalt from laterite ores has been developed which involves acid leaching followed by hydroxide precipitation of the metal values and then releaching of the hydroxide cake with ammonia. Investigations of the chemistry of extraction of nickel by LIX® 84-I and a developmental reagent, XI-84-IT, along with the physical properties of the organic phases are described. Based on these investigations, suggestions with regard to design of a solvent extraction plant and operating conditions are made.

Extensive use is made of a small scale computer (IBM 1130), in the calculations of ore reserves for Western Mining Corporation's nickel mine at Kambalda, W.A. All surface drilling data such as assays, density and location information, are stored on disk files at the Company's Technical Computing Centre at Perth, W.A. The computer is used to search through the data, select significant ore intersections, calculate the area of influence of each intersection and perform the necessary calculations to arrive at an estimate of the ore reserve. FOR a considerable number of years past, there has been a shortage of experienced coal miners at the coal mine of the Phelps-Dodge Corp. This is probably due, to some extent, to the mines being so far south of the main western coal producing regions, so that experienced men secure employment before reaching this point. These mines are at Dawson, New Mexico, which is in Colfax County, near the Colorado line. The district is known as the Raton field, and the seam being worked is known as the Raton or Blossburg seam. The mines operated are Nos. 1 to 6, 8 and 9. The daily out- put at the present time, with restricted operations, is about 4000 tons, but the daily capacity is about 5500 tons. The mines are so grouped that the coal is dumped over four tipples. The mines are about twenty-five years old and extend as much as three miles under ground; they are all drift openings, with trolley, storage battery, and mule haulage. At the same time that the shortage of miners existed there was a surplus of common labor seeking employment. We learned that the Copper Queen. Branch of Phelps Dodge Corp. conducted a training school in one of its mines which had worked out very satisfactorily, and thus gained the idea of attempting such a school in the coal mines at Dawson.

Replacement of the Monroe Street Viaduct in southwest Baltimore City, Maryland included transforming 240 feet of the south approach from a pile-supported multi-span bridge to a mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) embankment supported by vibro-concrete columns (VCCs) and a load transfer platform. The project area was underlain with highly compressible soils which would have resulted in up to 18 inches of settlement under the proposed embankment load. Adjacent structures and critical underground utilities would have been impacteded or damaged by this settlement. Various load transfer alternatives were evaluated to mitigate the anticipated settlement by supporting the embankment on a deeper, more competent stratum. The alternatives considered included compaction grout columns, stone columns, deep soil mixing, and VCCs. Deep soil mixing was eventually selected for design, however, as part of a value engineering proposal, the general contractor Joseph B. Fay Company, with assistance from Hayward Baker and the Collin Group, prepared and submitted an alternative consisting of VCCs. This paper presents the details of the value load transfer platform and VCC design. Loading tests were utilized to confirm the VCC capacity and field changes were implemented based on the test results.

During the past two decades, synthetic abrasives have taken over successively greater percentages of the high-grade abrasive market, so that now, with the exception of natural diamonds (discussed in section 3.15.4C of this chapter), the importance of natural high-grade abrasives is negligible. The predominance of synthetic abrasives is indicated in Table 15.4A.1. This shows that the 1968 value of domestically produced synthetic abrasives (excluding synthetic diamonds) was over $80 million, whereas the value of garnet, the largest domestically produced, natural high-grade abrasive, was less -than $2 million. The major synthetic abrasives (other than synthetic diamonds) are: alumina, silicon carbide, boron carbide, tungsten carbide, and metallic oxides, including various iron oxides. A major advantage of synthetic abrasives is that the size and shape of grain can be closely controlled during manufacture. Although Table 15.4A.1 gives the average price of synthetic abrasives, such averages are of somewhat limited value. This is because the actual price varies within wide limits, depending on composition, hardness, size, and shape of grain. In 1968 the approximate total consumption of abrasives in the United States was valued at about $200 million, of which about two-fifths was in the form of synthetic abrasives (other than diamonds), one-third in synthetic diamonds, and the remainder in natural diamonds. Natural abrasive products, such as silica sand, tripoli, and pumice, are important in the low-cost abrasive field. Of the low-cost abrasives, silica sand continues to be the most important, with domestic production of about 300,000 tons at a value of $1.8 million (see Table 15.4A.1). In general, the lower the sales price of the abrasive product, the more limited is the market which can be served from a given production center. Each abrasive has applications for which it is especially useful, but there is a continual struggle among abrasive suppliers to induce substitution of one product for another. Such substitution can be stimulated by changes in method of preparation affecting hardness, shape, and size of grain.

In spite of the widespread interest in rock bolt research, relatively little is known about the critical region surrounding the bolt anchor. In analyzing the stress distribution around an opening resulting from rock bolt support, it is commonly assumed that the bolt is fixed at a point far enough from the surface so that the anchor does not influence the performance of the bolt. Furthermore, a bolt anchor is assumed to per- form satisfactorily if it will hold the design load with a minimum amount of load relaxation, commonly called bleedoff. From the standpoint of the design engineer both of these assumptions are reasonable, but they ignore the fact that the extremely high stresses in the region of the anchor are capable of generating fractures in the rock. Lang1 estimated the bearing stresses for a slot and wedge anchor on a one-inch-diameter bolt to be as high as 125,000 psi. This paper describes a more thorough analysis of the magnitude of the stresses around the anchor and the nature of the potential fractures that might result. It should be emphasized that there are two types of anchor-associated fracturing which may occur. The more common form, particularly in soft rock, is severe localized crushing of the rock in the immediate vicinity of the anchor, which makes securing the anchor difficult and causes bleed- off. It is also possible to develop larger single fractures which propagate out from the anchor, affecting the strength of the entire rock mass. The formation of these larger fractures is of primary concern in this paper. In addition to estimating the contact stresses and pullout load for slot and wedge bolt anchors, Lang carried out an important study of rock bolt interaction which served as a basis for the experimental phase of this investigation. In the first phase of his tests, a plate of photoelastic plastic was compressed by a row of piano wire bolts, simulating the interaction of bolt stress fields to form a zone of uniform compression (Fig 1). GOLD AND SILVER Cyanidation According to Mellor (1923) the alchemists of the eighteenth century knew that gold was soluble in aqueous solution of potassium cyanide, and the early jewelers probably utilized this fact in gilding. He also mentions that Scheele in 1783 and later Bagration in 1843 noted the solvent action of aqueous solutions of alkali cyanides on gold. Yet it was not until 1887 that the value of this observation was recognized, when MacArthur and Forrest (1887) made use of it in leaching gold from its ores. Since then, the process has spread to every gold and silver mining district in the world.

Surface mining of multiple scams by mountaintop mining methodology is complex in the Appalachian region of West Virginia. Excess spoil from the removal of overburden and interburden is disposed in the adjacent valleys. The valley fills so formed are some of the largest earth constructions, with a relief of 450 ft (137 m) to 650 ft (198 m) and a stretch of 500 ft (152 m) to 2000 ft (610 m). The stability of the valley fills has become an issue of public concern. This paper describes three cases of valley fill slopes. The analysis of each case involved the description of the geo-mechanical properties of different surface and sub-surface layers, and the surface configuration of the slope. Slope stability was carried out using deterministic as well as probabilistic approaches. Based on the analysis, it was found that valley till slopes were stable due to configuration, and the premise that valley fills with great stretch and high volume of spoil tend to be unstable does not hold.

The Queensland Mining Act 1968-1972 has now been in force for almost two years. The Act was completely re-written and has made for easier working, e.g., there is no distinction now between Gold Mining Leases and other Mining Leases. For the first time in the history of Queensland, provision has been made for caveats, so that options etc. can be protected. The chief problem which has arisen so far has been the question of the Government issuing mining leases to the holder of an Authority to Prospect over areas which are included iri its Authority. Litigation has taken place and an Appeal, it is understood, will shortly be heard by the Privy Council. The provisions dealing with labour conditions have been brought up-to-date and generally speaking, they are quite clear as to the responsibility of the Lessee. The Mining on Private Land Act has been repealed and the provisions relating to mining on private land are now a part of the Mining Act itself. A brittle solid broken by crushing or impact, results in a mass size distribution curve having a straight line segment when plotted on log-log paper. Depending on the mineral, the slope of this straight line segment ranges from a maximum of one for materials like glass and quartz to values of one half or less. Theoretical derivations of the size distribution, such as the Gaudin-Meloy model, yield a slope of one and only one. When the Gaudin-Meloy model is modified to assume that not all cracks terminate on a preexisting surface, the new model predicts that size distribution slopes, depending on the type of brittle solid, will be less than one. There is a measurable physical parameter that will predict the slope. In addition the model predicts that particles from such a size distributions will have negative corners and peaks - indentations. Moreover the model predicts that particle shape will systematically change with decreasing particle size. Finally, this new physical model of comminution may be experimentally tested.

ON Coal's Horizon one development rises above all others. That is the swift expansion of output to make Soviet Russia the largest coal producer on earth next to the United States. Few Americans are aware of the speed and extent of that expansion nor of the accompanying creation of a strong, resourceful mining machinery industry, nor of the extent and character of the mechanization of Soviet coal mining. Two initial clarifications are necessary for better understanding. First, we must keep in mind the sharp distinction between the Russian people and the communist Soviet dictators who rule them. The great mass of the Russian people are not members of the Communist Party as people here are Republicans or Democrats. They are not permitted to be members. There are, by various estimates, only 2 to 4 million members of that party in all Soviet Russia. The other 196 to 198 million are the victims of their tyranny and their terror. It is the activity of the Soviet rulers that concerns us here.

A fatal accident may result when a dozer is driven over a hidden void in a coal surge pile and the dozer falls into the void, burying and suffocating the dozer operator. This type of accident was analyzed by researchers from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safely and Health using inexpensive fault-tree programs that had been developed, for use on a personal computer. Fault-tree analysis is a systematic safety-analysis tool that proceeds deductively from the occurrence of an accident event to the identification of the root causes of that event. The analysis identified basic and intermediate events that led to the burial of the dozer and graphically depicted the interrelationship between the basic events as well as the intermediate events leading up to the accident. A sensitivity analysis on assigned probabilities showed which events had the greatest influence on dozer burial in a coal surge pile. Operational guidelines and engineering controls are suggested to decrease the probability of a burial event.

"For many decades the incidence of a highly active graphite-like ore has plagued the McIntyre mine. This ore acts as a precipitant of the gold complex immediately upon formation of this complex. The gold is subsequently discharged with the tailings.Many different methods have been devised by various researchers all of which proved inapplicable for the McIntyre problem.Recently, McIntyre personnel, through their own research, developed a flowsheet. This circuit should give an overall recovery of 36% which is below the 94% experienced in the mill at present. Therefore, less revenue would arise from treatment of these ores. On the other hand there exists a possibility of more efficient mining methods in some of this ore thus allowing more economic recovery.INTRODUCTION This paper has been prepared to serve two purposes:i) To propose a method of recoverying gold from a sizeable orebody at the McIntyre mine at Schumacher.ii) To summarize and present the many methods suggested to solve a very old but very real mineral dressing problem familiar to the industry as long as cyanidation itself."

Efficient on-line monitoring of electrolytic cell performance in copper electro-refining has been challenging due to the need for complex electrical measurement systems and the management of the enormous volume of data. Based on Kennecott Utah Copper's innovation Outotec has developed a novel and innovative electrolytic cell monitoring system called CellSense™ System. As the system is based on self-powering from bus bars, wireless communication, on-line adaptive modeling and easy to access information and alarming, traditional obstacles of electrolytic cell monitoring are eliminated. With cell voltage and electrolyte temperature measurements, CellSense System enables real-time cell performance discovery and early reaction to critical production or quality disturbances such as short-circuiting, flow blockages, cold cathodes or electrolyte temperature excursions. During the past few years the system has been delivered to over 3500 commercial cells. In this paper the largest CellSense™ System ever delivered and recently adapted by Kennecott Utah Copper with 1412 cells monitored on-line for high tankhouse performance, cathode quality and optimized operator work flow is presented. Early results and benefits are discussed.

When developing a mineral processing facility, the mining company management and engineering staff should have some knowledge of the construction industry in order to work with the contractors involved as a team. Of course, the situation varies with the nature of the project and its size, but relations among owners, engineers, and contractors always will be enhanced if the mining company has a knowledge of three construction industry facets: (1) the makeup of a construction company, (2) the functions performed by its staff, and (3) the various types of contracts and tendering procedures available. There are several options open to a company wishing to bring a new mine into production from the grass roots, depending upon corporate structure, capabilities, and financial strength. A company that already employs a substantial engineering staff may elect to manage and perform the design requirements itself, and may handle some or even all of the actual construction work. But in cases where bank financing is required, the loan is often dependent upon adequate professional construction help being used.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of anthracite from the Mammoth and Holmes veins in Schuylkill County, Pa., as determined by the Federal Bureau of Mines laboratory separations at specific gravities of 1.50 to 1.90. The Holmes vein anthracite contains approximately 13 percent ash, and the Mammoth vein contains about 9 percent as fed to the breaker. Crushing Broken, Egg, and Stove sizes from each vein produces Pea-size anthracite of lower ash content than that contained in Buckwheat No.1 size and smaller. The Buck-wheat No.5 size has the highest ash content of all the sizes examined. Potential recovery from a mixture of the two veins as received at the breaker, separated at 1.90 specific gravity, is approximately 64 percent of the feed at 11.0 percent ash. The same materials separated at 1.80 specific gravity yield about 61 percent with an ash content of 10.1 percent. All rejects are from the Holmes vein, because the entire Mammoth material is less than 10.0 percent ash.
