FOR many years gravitational classification has been employed as a basic tool in beneficiation of minerals and coal. While improvements have been made to increase efficiency and fields of application, the basic flow pattern has remained relatively unchanged in most gravitational classifiers. Feed slurry is introduced into a settling pool wherein the coarser solids settle against either an upward or horizontal fluid current, or a combination of both, and are withdrawn in a concentrated underflow stream. The finer solids below the classification point possess too low a settling velocity and thus are primarily swept out through a weir overflow by the bulk of the fluid. Because of its simplicity, efficiency, and low power and maintenance costs, gravitational classification finds a wide acceptance for separations in the range of 20 to 325 mesh.

This report on methods employed for dehydrating oil-field emulsions, is the second of a series prepared as a result of a study of oil-field emulsions recently completed by the writer. The first paper2 dealt with the factors responsible for the formation of emulsions. A third paper will discuss the physical chemistry involved in the formation and resolution of such emulsions. In the early development of the oil fields of Pennsylvania, no emulsion troubles of any consequence were encountered, nor to any serious extent in the oil fields of other Eastern States: However, with the development of fields west of the Mississippi in Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas and California, where heavier oils of different characteristics were found, the problem of dealing with cut oil soon became of great importance.

David Pollard will raise this matter in more aetail in a later paper, but mere are some obvious points that I wish to make. It is a relatively straightforward exercise to assess the competency at a low level in the workplace where the consequences of a worker's actions can be observed immediately. Assessing competency at higher levels which may involve creative, planning, design or supervisory functions is more difficult, especially where managerial responsibility and accountability for the output of others is involved. This is generally the case with the daily activities of most mining professionals, whether they be in operations, in a consulting capacity, in research, or in government.

A study of the effect of nickel on the cupellation process has shown that a very low "nickel limit" must be imposed for cupellation (0·08 grams nickel or 0·05 grams when copper is present). In the presence of slightly greater amounts of nickel, lead tends to spreadon the cupel with detachment of drops from the main lead pool. In crucible fusions nickel contaminates the lead button to a small extent, and this contamination is increased.in the presence of either iron or copper. Nickel also causes "shotting" of the lead, this effect being more apparent in the presence of iron.Both the spreading during cupellation and the shotting during crucible fusion are considered to be caused by adsorption of insoluble NiO at the Pb-PbO interface, lowering the interfacial tension.Excess litharge crucible charges are' fused at 116boC. to eliminate shotting. A brief· soaking in molten basic litharge slag effectively reduces the nickel content of lead buttons. The solubility of silver in litharge slags is considerably decreased in the presence of nickel. Corrections can be applied for silver losses in slags but these corrections are not as accurate as with copper ores.INTRODUCTIONThis paper on the effects of nickel on fire assays for silver is the second of an intended series describing investigations into the fire assaying method.In the first paper, discussing the effect of copper on fire assaying processes (Guerin, 1957), it was shown that certain elements, because of their relatively low affinities for oxygen, will tend to contaminate the lead button during crucible fusion and scorification. I WISH to present to you a few thoughts on some of the phenomena and laws of iron smelting. Owing to the great complexity of the subject, to the great variety of points to be taken into consideration, many of which are very poorly understood, and to the meagreness and even conflictoriness of our information with regard to some of the most important laws which govern the subject, the fruits of such thoughts as I venture to offer you must be received as speculations, not as facts. Nevertheless, in discussing old phenomena from new standpoints, thus furnishing a metallurgical parallax, if I may say so, these theoretical speculations may have their value in helping to a clearer comprehension of the phenomena and laws we now know, and in suggesting new lines of inquiry. While an increase of height in blast furnaces is not always followed by increase in their power of production, experience proves that it tends to increase it; for while we have many cases of short furnaces producing more iron than longer ones, yet enormous productions, such as those of the Lucy and Isabella furnaces of Pittsburgh, and of the furnaces of Esch sur l'Alzette, in Luxembourg, have never been reached in short furnaces. We may safely infer that height is an element essential to great production, though of course not the only essential element, and that, in the case of high furnaces which are not capable of great production, some other essential element is wanting. Moreover, experience teaches that within limits increase of height tends to increase the producing power in a still higher ratio. Many persons hold the opinion that the metal indus- ries are fortuitous and that the occupation is one of sordid toil, and altogether a kind of business requir- ing not so much skill as labour. But as for myself, when I reflect carefully upon its special points one by one, it appears to be far otherwise. So wrote Georgius Agricola in 1556. He could have been espousing the sentiments of an indus- trial archaeologist investigating mining sites in 1986. South Australia has a very rich legacy from its industrial past-especially in the area of its mining history. Industrial archaeology, which is part of the broad field of archaeology, is concerned with the material and documentary remains of this industrial past. This includes the products and processes of manufacturing, industrial, technolog- ical and engineering activity and their relation- ships to people and the environment. `Archaeology' immediately conjures up the image of excavations in Greece or Eygpt. Excavation however is only a part of archaeological methodology. Industrial archaeology utilizes documentary historical rec- ords combined with field survey techniques (both above and below ground) to create a composite picture of the past. Interest in our recent past has burgeoned in Australia in the last few years. This interest manifests itself in many ways-the unprecedented popularity of Australiana and col- lecting, the plethora of Australian historic films, the growth of the National Trust, local historical societies and genealogical research. Fortunately these trends have been reflected in academic and legislative circles. Various univers- ities, institutes of technology and colleges of advanced education run courses in aspects of cul- tural resource management and conservation of the historic environment. These courses are com- prised of archaeology, architecture, geography, his- tory, materials conservation, museum studies, and national parks management and planning.

Mineralogical studies were carried out on nodulated copper cathodes from three primary refineries to characterize the nodular growths and to elucidate the causes of the nodulation. Nodulation is often initiated at the surface of the starter sheet or the stainless steel plating blank, although a layer of smooth copper sometimes is deposited before nodulation commences. In some instances, the "roots" of the nodules exhibit a pronounced dendritic texture that is associated with an abundance of cavities. Slimes particles are not usually associated with these growth features which lead to a globular surface deposit. The globules sometimes develop into larger nodules, and this type of nodulation is likely caused by improper addition agent concentrations. The nodules on most cathodes, however, exhibit "roots" at the contact with the substrate that are associated with microcavities and large clusters (>40 µm) of slimes particles. The slimes constituents are commonly Ag powder, PbSO4 and Cu2(Se,Te) but not AgCu(Se,Te) or Ag,(Se,Te). The size of the slimes clusters, rather than their composition, appears to be the important factor causing the copper to grow into nodules. Tiny individual slimes particles themselves do not appear to cause cathode nodulation.

"New permanent magnetic alloys have recently opened up possibilities for development of unique mineral separators. These are now making several new applications feasible. In many cases where conventional electromagnetic-induced roll separators have traditionally been used, the new permanent magnetic roll separators may reduce both over-all capital costs and operation costs.The development of the next generation of extremely powerful permanent magnets, i.e. neodymium-iron alloys, is progressing rapidly and will affect the roll separator as well as another type of magnetic separator. Permanent Magnet Roll SeparatorDesign and FeaturesDiscs of permanent magnets interleaved with soft iron discs constitute the basic magnetic roll design (Fig. I). By enveloping the magnetic roll with a thin abrasive resistant belt (Fig. 2), even highly magnetic particles are removed.The first prototype roll utilizing the new magnets was shown to have approximately equal strength as induced magnetic roll (IMR) separators. Since the initial test roll, the new separator, called the PERMROLL® , has been made twice as strong with regard to magnetic force, that is, the magnetic flux density is determined to exceed 1.7 tesla (17 kilogauss), while the magnetic field gradient is more than twice the gradient than can be practically achieved with IMR."

SUMMARY In August 1986, TRANSMANCHE LINK, a joint venture comprising the 10 companies who initially promoted the project, signed a contract with EUROTUNNEL for the design, construction and commissioning of the TRANSMANCHE fixed link for an amount of 4,5 billion dollars. On the French side, the work consists of digging three, 19km. long tunnels, of which almost 16 kms. are under the sea, up to the meeting point with the Tunnel works carried out by the British.. The tunnels are bored through chalk by 5 tunnelling machines, starting from one intermediate point at Sangatte near the coast: - Landward, they are drilled trough permeable strata of white and grey chalk. - Seaward, mainly through relatively impermeable chalk marl, but with the presence of water in faulted zones, or in grey chalk.

Forty-four states produced clay products during 1994 for a total value of $1.6 billion. This was a 3% increase in total tonnage and a 7% increase in value from 1993. Kaolin Domestic production of kaolin during 1994 was estimated to be 9.3 Mt (10.2 million st), according to the US Bureau of Mines (USBM). Georgia remained the leading producer with 7.5 Mt (8.2 million st), followed by South Carolina with 535 kt (589,000 st). Kaolin used as a paper coating or filler pigment accounted for 51% of domestic consumption. Other uses included grogs (14%), fiberglass (5%) and plastics (4%). A reclassification by an Alabama producer of fire clay to kaolin accounts for the introduction of kaolin used in grogs. This also accounts for the apparent decrease in the use of kaolin in paper from 60% in 1993. However, the actual amount of kaolin used in paper was the same.

A phase diagram is proposed for the Y-C system based on the vesults of thermal analyses, microscopic obsevvations, and X-ray diffraction studies. Three intermediate phases occur in the system: a congru-ently melting fcc phase with a wide range of homogeneity about the composition Y2C, an intermediate solid-solution region between 55 and 58 at. pct C, and a bct dicarbide melting congruently at 2415°C. All three compounds undergo a phase transformation at elezlated temperatures. A continuous serzes of solzd solutions exists between the fcc phase and the high-temperature form of YC2 with a maximum in the solidus at 2000°C and 30 at. pct C and a minimum at 1805°C and 54 at. pct C. THIS investigation of the Y-C system was undertaken as part of a nuclear materials development program. Yttrium-base alloys are of interest as possible containers for liquid metals, and carbides are currently receiving increased attention as high-temperature materials for advanced reactors and other applications. Previous work on this system was limited in scope, and the results were somewhat inconclusive and at times contradictory. Spedding et al.&apos; reported the existence of a triyttrium carbide having an fcc structure with a wide range of homogeneity and Dean et a1.2 reported the existence of a rhombohedra1 phase having the stoichiometry of Y2C. Bachella et a1.3 observed that the latter was the result of ordering of carbon atoms in the fcc solid solution. The ordering range was placed at 800" to 1000°C. Vickery et a1.4 reported a high-melting compound which they identified as yttrium dicarbide, and Spedding and coworkers1 determined the structure of this phase as bct with lattice parameters a = 3.66 and c = 6.17A. Samsonov et al.5 reported the melting point of YC2 as 2300" * 50°C. Recently Bowman et a1.6 found a transformation in the dicarbide from the tetragonal to an fcc form at 1320 20°C. Samsonov and coworkers7 reported a monocarbide of yttrium melting at 1950" * 20°C and also a sesqui-carbide melting at 1800" * 50°C. The existence of the latter has also been indicated by others,1&apos;8 but neither compound has been definitely established. The Y-C phase diagram shown in Fig. 1 was proposed by Chubb and Keller8 in 1964 based on the data available at that time. The tentative nature of this diagram together with the uncertain status of the compounds indicated that additional work on this system was needed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Yttrium metal of 99.9 pct purity was prepared for use in this study by the reduction of YCl, with calcium to form a sponge product.9 The major impurities in this material were as follows: 100 ppm C, 150 pprn H, 20 ppm N, 300 to 1000 ppm O, <20 ppm Ca, <100 ppm Cr, <80 ppm Cu, 150 ppm Fe, <30 pprn Mg, <400 ppm Ta, and <100 ppm Ti. Alloys were prepared by arc melting yttrium sponge together with pieces of high-purity graphite rod in a purified argon atmosphere. Homogeneity was insured by repeated melting, inverting the ingot between melts.

Environmental protection, economic prosperity and respect of the need for social equity promotion, constitute a prerequisite for any modern industry aiming to operate in a sustainable manner. The Natural Stone industry in Europe, a sector comprising mainly of SMEs, despite the fact that consists a dynamic extraction sector, often lucks the resources to apply novel techniques and management schemes towards achieving sustainable performance. I-STONE, an EU Integrated Project funded by the 6th Framework Programme, is aiming to contribute in the improved performance of the Natural Stone industry. A primary project objective is the re-engineering of the stone production chain, in order among others to considerably in-crease its efficiency and productivity, and minimise the amount of stone wastes disposed. The present paper, resulting from the research con-ducted on environmental management within I-STONE, is focusing on the use of sustainable indicators as a tool for the assessment of the stone industry?s performance. Based on Commission Decisions and reported studies, a list of indicators was selected and used within I-STONE, including environmental and socio-economic indicators. A set of selected environmental indicators were quantified based on operational data of a number of Greek and Portuguese quarries examined as case studies. The analysis indicated that an integrated strategy, including the application of novel operation techniques and equipment, waste minimization and systematic environmental monitoring and reporting, constitute key factors for the sustainable operation of natural stone industry.

In both the U.S.A. and Canada regulations concerning the reporting on mineral resources and especially ore reserves have been established. The regulations are virtually identical for the two countries with the main exceptions being who is franchised to write the report and how the various reserve categories may be used in reports to the public. Both countries divide ore reserves into "proven", "probable" and "inferred" categories. "Proven" reserves are those for material for which tonnage is computed from dimensions revealed in outcrops, trenches, underground workings or drill holes and for which the grade is composed from the results of adequate sampling. "Probable" reserves are those which are less well defined than "proven" while "inferred" reserves are generally those which may exist through geological and geophysical interpretation. The AusIMM/AMIC draft guidelines as proposed for use in Australia define more rigidly the ore reserve categories into "proved" and "probable" terms, which can only be applied following a full and favourable analysis of economic, mining, metallurgical, marketing and sociopolitical factors. If the ore reserves are not supported by this analysis they are placed into a "resource" category. Proper application of this proposed Australian model could prove useful when dealing with grass-root prospects or mining properties in the pre-feasibility stage. Combined with competent reporting, use of the proposed guidelines should ensure standardised and more verifiable analysis/valuation of a company&apos;s mineral assets.

Smelting furnace rebuild projects often require a significant capital expenditure and an extended smelter outage. Smelter operators are increasingly searching for methods and initiatives to shorten furnace rebuild schedules, maintain manageable cost levels, enhance furnace performance and achieve excellent safety results. This paper describes the ?MEPC? Model for furnace rebuilds; a project driven approach which Auburn has developed in response to the need for improving furnace rebuild project outcomes. The ?MEPC? (Management, Engineering, Procurement and Construction) approach better addresses the unique challenges presented by furnace rebuild projects when compared to the traditional EPCM (Engineering, Procurement, Construction Management) model widely in use for these projects today. One key feature of the MEPC model is that a dedicated project management team with representation from all of the major project stakeholder groups is put in place at the onset of the project. The project management team has ownership and accountability for meeting overall project goals over the entire lifecycle of the furnace rebuild project. A second key aspect of the model is emphasis on project management as a completely separate project function with its own specific skill sets, techniques, tools and best practices. These features of the MEPC model offer several advantages in terms of improved planning, coordination, communication and alignment with project goals which contribute to the overall success of furnace rebuild projects. Similar MEPC concepts have been used to deliver excellent project results in other industries and the MEPC approach has been successfully utilized on furnace rebuild projects.

Jurist, educator and historian Neil Reynolds will be the keynote speaker at the National Mining Hall of Fame&apos;s 11th annual induction banquet on Sunday, Oct. 11,1998 at the Pointe Hilton Resort in Phoenix, AZ. Reynolds is Municipal Court Judge for the City of Leadville, CO, home of the National Mining Hall of Fame & Museum, and a fifth-generation resident of the community. His family staked mining claims on nearby Mount Massive in 1862. Judge Reynolds is a fulltime faculty member at Colorado Mountain College, Chairman of the Lake County Historic Preservation Advisory Board and practices law in Leadville. In announcing the speaker, Board Chairman Richard Moolick said seven inductees into the National Mining Hall of Fame will join 138 mining greats previously honored in the annual ceremonies. This year&apos;s inductees will be enshrined by Thomas Falkie, president and chief executive officer of Berwind Natural Resources of Philadelphia, PA. Moolick also announced that Jeffrey Clevenger will be the master of ceremonies for the induction banquet. Clevenger is executive vice president of Cyprus Amax Minerals, Englewood, CO and president of Cyprus Climax Metals, Tempe, AZ. Pyrite is the most abundant and widespread sulphide mineral and its flotation has been investigated by many researchers. It is well known that, pyrite is floatable under acidic conditions and recovery drops with increase in alkalinity due to changes in solubility of iron hydroxides on the pyrite surface. Most of the works also revealed out that pyrite displays variable behaviour in flotation circuits. This behaviour mainly related with origin and mineralogical composition of ore, liberation size, electrochemical behavior of minerals constituting ore, the trace and minor element content of the mineral, texture, application variables belonging to flotation circuits. In this study, copper activation effect was examined on different origin of pyrites. The experiments were performed with five high grade samples of pyrite from the different mining districts of Turkey. The pyrite samples were different from each other with respect to either their physical or chemical properties; they were different physical appearances and contained different associated minerals. In the micro-flotation tests, 1x10-4 mole/L copper sulphate and 1x10-4 potassium ethyl xanthate were used as flotation reagents. First of all pyrite samples were floated using only xanthate at different pH. Results showed that best floatation results obtained at acidic pH range for all pyrite samples. When copper ions were used to activate, all pyrite samples floated at neutral and basic pH values, too but depending on the samples, recovery and pH ranges were slightly changed.

An experimental progmm based on statistical principles is used for optimizing a flotation operation for the separation of minerals. In this case, flotation of sylvite from sylvinite ore with amine and starch as the flotation reagents was studied to find the optimum reagent levels at various slime levels. The experiments were first done on a two-level three-factor design. Analysis of the results showed that the interactions between various factors were significant. Hence, a first-order linear model of the flotation response would not be accurate. The two-level three-factor design was expanded into a composite design in order to test the fit of a higher-order model. Data were treated to obtain an expression for flotation response as a function of the different variables, to predict the optimum reaaent levels at various slime levels, and also to determine the path of steepest ascent. Tests around the predicted optimum and along the path of the steepest ascent were done until a near-optimum region was obtained. Exploration of the nature of the response surface in that region established the actual location of the maximum response. The optimum amine level was found to be 0.20 lb of amine per ten of ore at all slime levels, while the optimum starch level varied as a function of the slime present. Computer access at the laboratory by means of a teletype terminal on a commercial time-sharing system enabled efficient and accurate treatment of experimental data. The efficiency of experimental investigations can be improved significantly by the use of experimental design and data analysis based on statistical principles. The common approach used in experimental research is to study a property of a system as a function of "one-variable-at-a-time". The purpose of this Bureau of Mines investigation was twofold. The first phase of the work was to determine the technical and mechanical feasibility of defluorinating low-grade siliceous fluorspars on an intermediate scale by high-temperature pyrohydrolysis in a rotary kiln. The second phase was to react the liberated hydrogen fluoride (HF) offgas with alumina monohydrate to produce commercial-grade aluminum fluoride (85 percent AIF3). The two phases of the work were to be integrated into a single continuous process. Evaluation of the data shows that low-grade siliceous fluorspars can be successfully defluorinated, either in a solid or a molten state, in a gas-fired rotary kiln in the presence of water vapor at 1,250° to 1,350° C. The water produced by combustion of propane was sufficient to yield defluorinatians of 75 to 85 percent.

THE. Owyhee Tunnels in eastern Oregon were started in the early part of 1930, and were completed early in 1932, with the excep-tion of the Magoffin contract. One tunnel is a large water tun-nel, and the other is a small water tunnel; each is approximately tour miles long. Modern equipment was used to full advantage, and remarkably fast time was made during the driving period. The ,J. F. Shea Co., con-tractors, of Portland, Oregon, have broken established records in the smaller tunnel. Their methods are described in detail. The time of a complete round has been reduced by intelligent handling of mechanical shoveling, and this article records some of the useful facts developed. Charles A. Shea (president of the J. F. Shea Co., and secretary of The Six Companies, Inc.) not only granted permission to publish this article, but placed the company&apos;s complete daily reports at the writer&apos;s disposal. These reports were made out to conform with previous records upon important tunnel work, and enable a comparison to be made of actual averages, rather than ideal cycles, or representative cycles. Gilbert Shea, present superintendent, has been helpful with time, criticisms, and corrections of the information presented. Morton S. Boss, superintendent during the first 15 months of the tunnel work, gave many hours of his time during two visits lasting over two weeks. The whole staff of the J. F. Shea Co. has given encouragement and assistance.

IN previous publications1 it was shown that a scalar model of any weighty structure, where the stresses produced are mainly due to gravita-tional forces, will behave similarly to its prototype if the model and proto-type material are the same arid the model is placed in a centrifugal field of force (substituted for the gravitational field) which has been increased in the same proportion as the linear model scale is decreased. This principle is now being applied to a study of the behavior of mine structures in an attempt to determine the laws that control them. The importance of using models as a means of solving mining problems has been discussed previously, yet it may be well to reiterate here that this method of research and type of solution have been productive of far-reaching results in other engineering fields, notably those of hydraulics and aerodynamics. Model research is a comparatively cheap and time-saving method of checking practical experience. Up to the present time the best guide to what will happen underground has been the judgment of the man who has observed most and been longest acquainted with the local conditions. His experimental work underground is limited by the elements of cost, time and danger, while failure is seldom permissible. In a model, as in a test tube, all elements that affect the solution of a problem are under definite control. Each element may be varied independently at will and its effects noted. Experimental work on a small-scale model may there¬fore be performed at a comparatively small expenditure of time and money, instead of on a full scale in the mine, where the cost, time, and danger elements are necessarily great. The experiments described in this paper are to be considered as part of a progress report and a continuation of Technical Paper 425. One object of the research program is to make each experiment point the way for further research on that particular phase of the general problem.
