Tripoli is a naturally occurring, very finely divided form of silica found chiefly in some midwestern and southeastern states and used commercially as fillers and abrasives. Definitions Tripoli is a microcrystalline, finely particulate, more or less friable form of silica that appears to be the product of leaching of siliceous limestone or calcareous chert. The term was originally applied to a deposit near Seneca, Mo., that resembled material of that name found near Tripoli in North Africa (Hovey, 1894). The two deposits were subsequently found to have different physical characteristics -the North African tripoli, now called tripolite, is a diatomite, composed of the siliceous skeletons of microscopic marine plants called diatoms, and the Missouri tripoli contains no diatom remains; the term tripoli, however, continued to be used for the Missouri material and is now applied in a general way to most silica deposits similar to it in characteristics and geologic origin. In commercial trade tripoli is commonly understood to designate material from the Missouri-Oklahoma field; silica from southern Illinois, the other major producing area, is referred to commercially as amorphous silica. Each term, however, may be used commercially for material, regardless of place of origin, that has the characteristics or uses commonly ascribed to the material from one or the other major producing area. For example, in the commodity price listings, Engineering and Mining Journal routinely lists under Tripoli, prices "f.0.b. Elco, III." and "f.0.b. Seneca, Mo., and Rogers, Ark.," and under Silica, amorphous, prices "f .o.b. Ill.," and "f .o.b. Dierks, Ark." Amorphous silica, the commercial designation given to southern Illinois tripoli, is, like the term tripoli, a misnomer. Mineralogically, the southern Illinois deposits are composed of microcrystalline quartz, and no amorphous material has been detected during X-ray and scanning electron microscope investigations (Leamnson, Thomas, and Ehrlinger, 1969; Thomas et al., 1970). Soft silica is another term that has been applied to Illinois and Tennessee tripoli, presumably to distinguish it from the more compact Missouri material. It has also been used in the ceramic trade to distinguish tripoli from "hard" silica, or silica flour, produced by pulverizing silica sand (Heinz, 1937). Rottenstone, produced commercially in Pennsylvania, is similar to tripoli in that a major constituent is finely particulate silica, and its uses are much the same as those of tripoli- as abrasives and fillers. The origin of rottenstone also is similar to that of tripoli-decomposition of a siliceous sedimentary rock. The parent rock is defined as a siliceous limestone (Gary, McAfee, and Wolf, 1972; Thrush, 1968) or as shale (personal communication). Heinz (1937) quotes a brief statement describ-

INTRODUCTION Disposal of coal refuse is a costly and challenging problem facing the coal industry today. After the Martin County Coal Company slurry spill and the subsequent regulatory changes state and federal agencies are now beginning to require companies to justify new slurry impoundments. The authors have performed an analysis of different means of disposing of coal refuse for a major coal producing company located in the eastern Kentucky coalfields (the name of which will be withheld for the purpose of this paper). The company’s existing slurry impoundment is nearing its maximum permitted elevation and also an elevation where it may come in contact with abandoned underground workings. Due to the increased concern with underground mine works near slurry impoundments, additional consideration was given to raising the existing impoundment. Several other alternatives were evaluated, including but not limited to raising the existing impoundment, constructing a new slurry impoundment, constructing slurry cells, belt presses and others. This alternatives analysis was performed as part of a Section 404 permit for a valley fill and is currently being reviewed by the U. S. Army Corp of Engineers. All of the known possible alternatives were discussed in detail in the analysis. Due to the findings of the alternatives analysis, the company considers the engineered construction of the proposed impoundment to be the most favorable option of all the other alternatives evaluated, from both an economic and environmental standpoint. ALTERNATIVES EVALUATION FOR COALREFUSE/SLURRY DISPOSAL Background The company currently operates several deep mines and employ over 300 people and produces over 3.9 clean Mt/a (4 million stpy) of high quality, low sulfur coal. Currently, coarse refuse is belted to a valley fill, while, fine refuse is pumped to the existing impoundment. Coarse refuse is trucked to the existing impoundment as needed for construction purposes. The average recovery is approximately 50%; therefore, over 3.9 Mt/a (4 million stpy) of coal refuse must also be separated and placed.

High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) was introduced to the mineral processing industries in the mid-SO's as a tool for comminuting raw and processed materials. This tool made its an impact in the Cement Industry where it was used as a pre-grinder on existing ball mills, raw and finish grinding in a mill circuit and other various applications. This concept was a big success where the cost of power was high along with the desire to increase capacity. The HPGR reduced the power requirement and increased the capacity in the ball mill due to the finished product produced by the HPGR and the micro fractures in the coarse rock, which reduces the power required to finish grind the rock. This unit has found acceptance in many other industries including diamonds, iron and other selective applications. The diamond industry uses this tool for selective grinding purposes since the kimberlite rock is considerably softer than the actual diamonds. Therefore within a bed of material, kimberlite is crushed to fines and the diamonds are liberated and unharmed. The iron industry primarily uses this tool for concentrate comminution; however, there are installations using this tool as a pebble crusher and in an AG-pebble mill circuit.

North Flinders Mines Limited (N.F.M.) is an Australian-owned mineral exploration and mining company based in South Australia. In the 1970's it researched the prospectiveness of the Tanami (central western region of the N.T.) for the identification of possible economic gold deposits. Having outlined the potential for such a deposit at The Granites (550 km. N.W. of Alice Springs), it marked out and in 1975 applied for the grant of eleven gold mining leases (G.M.L.'s) under the provisions of the then Mining Ordinance. This application was deferred by the Commonwealth Government during the time of the Aboriginal Land Rights Commission (Woodward), subsequent enactment of legislation and land claims. In 1980, the Walpiri and Kartangarurra-Kurintji land claim encompassing the G.M.L.'s, became Aboriginal land. It therefore became necessary for N.F.M. to negotiate a mining agreement with the Central Land Council (C.L.C.) represent- ing the Traditional Owners, before the G.M.L.'s could be granted. In August 1983, the C.L.C. and N.F.M. concluded an agreement to enable the grant of mining interests necessary for the devel- opment of The Granites Gold Project. A statistical study of machinability led the writer to examine existing data in regard to a thermal conductivity-mechanical properties relationship. Various functional relationships were proposed and the multiple correlation determined by statistical methods discussed in detail in the 1iterature.4 The relationship having the greatest engineering and statistical significance is discussed below. The data for cast and wrought aluminum alloys''2 have been compiled and analyzed separately. The results of these analyses are presented in Table I. The empirical equations for estimating the thermal conductivity (cal sec-' cm-I °C) are: for cast aluminum alloys K = 0.584 -0.00984/ -0.00263 Hb [1] and for wrought aluminum alloys K = 0.604 -0.00424l- 0.00170 Hb [2] where 1 and Hb are the percentage elongation and Brinell hardness number. Results of a similar analysis pertaining to stainless steel3 are also given in Table I. This empirical equation for estimating thermal conductivity (Btu per sq ft per hr per °F per in.) is K = 216.19- 1.716l - 0.0997 Hb [3] The relationship between electrical resistivity and mechanical properties was also examined for aluminum alloys using the same statistical method. I DESIRE to call the attention of the Institute briefly, and by no means in the way of an exhaustive description, to the interesting developments recently made on the east bank of the Hudson River, in the mining of spathic iron ores. The mines to which I refer are those of the Hudson River Spathic Iron Ore Company, situated at Oakhill on Hudson, Columbia County, N. Y., five or six miles from the city of Hudson, and opposite the town of Catskill. The ore occurs in beds, constituting apparently members of the stratified series of rocks on that side of the river, coursing nearly north and south, parallel with the river, and dipping east. The principal outcrops are presented in a range of low hills, about one mile from the river, along the crest, on the western face of which the stratum of spathic ore is more or less exposed. The length of the line in this range, along which, at various openings the ore has been discovered in profitable quantity, is about two miles. To the northward, the hills are somewhat higher, and the stratification may possibly be disturbed, though the rapid examination of the locality which I made in November last did not, include any determination of this

The purpose of this paper is to point out some features of the position of fuel oil and it's relationship to the economic balance and price structure of the petroleum industry. The term "fuel oil" as used in this paper includes crude used as fuel as well as refined gas oil and fuel oil. The period covered, from 1922 to date, may be characterized as the new normal era after the post-war inflation and deflation. In order to establish a proper perspective, the figures on consumption of the principal products of petroleum are shown in Table 1. This table shows that fuel oil and gasoline made up the bulk of the total demand in 1928 just as they did in 1922. There has been so much comment about the enormous increase in gasoline consumption that it may come as a surprise to some people to find that fuel oil is still at the head of the consumption list, in point of volume at least, and seems likely to hold that place for at least another year. Having established the fact that gasoline and fuel oil are by far the most important products, the remainder of this paper will deal almost entirely with these two items.

The mining and metallurgical laboratory, as we understand the term in this country, is a place .in which mechanical and chemical working-tests are made on ores, fuels and furnacematerials. It is of quite recent origin. The first laboratory of this kind to be used in connection with teaching was put into operation in 1871 at the Massachusetts Institute of Techilo1ogy. † The idea had already existed in the mind of President W. B. Rogers when he wrote, in 1864, his pamphlet 'on " The Scope and Plan of the School of Industrial Science of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology;" but several years elapsed, and an extended visit to the mines and mills of Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California was required before this idea could take a form adapted to the purposes of original research as well as of instruction. The laboratory was given from the first into the charge of Prof. R. H. Richards, who, by improving its methods and enlarging its scope, has brought it to the position which it occupies to-day as the leading representative of its class. "Computers have been used extensively in the mineral industry in exploration, reserves calculation, mining technology, mineral processing, etc. With respect to coal mining, there are also various applications for evaluating rock slope stability of open pits, design of open pits, underground operations, mine ventilation, ground control, data processing and management information, operations control and certain technological applications. Mine ventilation appears to be the field in underground coal mining touched on most; on the other hand, underground coal mining methods evaluation is represented only sparingly.It is therefore essential to review the status of the computer in underground coal mining methods evaluation in order to define its scope for further application. The paper discusses the roles of the mining engineer, programmer, computer operator and analyst as well as that of the computer. The important parameters will be identified and discussed along with their application for different underground coal mining methods, with their individual unit processes. Mainly, longwall face operations have been covered. Although many models have been of academic interest, they can be considered as important steps in a transition stage which will be followed by more practical applications for computers for underground coal mining method evaluations in the future. This calls for a coordinated effort from all concerned."

It is a public university with a 29,792 students in three campuses in the state. The main campus of the University of Sonora is located in the capital city of Hermosillo, which has a population of more than 609,829, in the state of Sonora in the northwestern region of Mexico [1].Despite the fact that in the University of Sonora there were, in the eighties, some projects dealing with environmental issues, there was not until 1992 that the sustainability efforts were really initiated. It happened when the Sustainable Development Group was created in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering as a response to the need for adapting the industrial engineering curricula to the challenge of sustainable development [2]. In order to promote sustainability, it has been necessary to cope and break with several university paradigms. For this reason, the strategy for becoming a sustainable university has continuously evolved throughout the years from a simple structure composed by individual and isolated projects to a systematic and integrative Sustainability Management System. Thanks to this evolution, the University of Sonora has won a respectable reputation in the greater community and it is seen in the region as an icon of sustainability promoter. In this sense, the substantives functions of education, research, and outreach and partnership, which are considered supportive and integrative, have also evolved to play a key role for the success of sustainability initiatives.The institution has followed four avenues for becoming a sustainable university; education, research, outreaching and partnership and greening the campus [3]."

The acquisition of submarine gravity data using airborne gravity technology is a practical reality. Ocean Floor Geophysics plans to deploy a free-swimming ROV based submarine gravimeter on a commercial basis in early 2009. The submarine instrument is a variant of the well-used GT-1A airborne gravimeter. Airborne gravity surveys are now routine. The primary factor controlling the accuracy of airborne gravimeters is the precision of the GPS measurement of vertical movement of the sensor platform. The gravity measurements along a flight line are the differences between the output of the gravimeter vertical accelerometer and the estimate of the aircraft vertical acceleration using the differential GPS system. The principle difficulty of moving an airborne gravimeter to a free-swimming submarine platform is the necessity to have an accurate real time estimate of the changing elevation and hence changing vertical acceleration of the platform; GPS doesn't work underwater and an accurate estimate of depth fluctuations to the necessary precision is difficult to acquire. It is interesting that the airborne gravity gradiometer technology, which competes with the airborne gravity technology, was first developed as a classified military application for use by missile submarines during the cold war. Gradiometers were developed for this application specifically to avoid this problem. A gradiometer does not require as accurate an estimate of its vertical position to make a useful reading- it measures gravity gradients, not the gravity field itself.

What is the economic basis for direct, continuous particle size measurement and control? First, precise grinding control is necessary to achieve and maintain a specified recovery and throughput. Second, throughput and recovery are direct functions of particle size-and these two factors control the economic performance of the ore concentration process. Third, only size-based control using a particle size and percent solids monitor (PSM) has achieved the necessary precise control. Recovery, throughput and cost can be accurately measured for various concentrator operating conditions if particle size is closely controlled. From such data the economic results of different particle size grind points can be analyzed. This will reveal the best combination of recovery and throughput to meet objectives established by financial management. Predictable, repeatable response to set-point selection is essential if the projected profitability of the mill is to be reached.

A new class of spongy Au catalysts is studied for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by propene under leanburn conditions. The spongy catalyst is an unsupported powdered Au that consists of micrometer particles (~5 microns) that have nanometer scale (~10 nm) internal skeletal structures. The effects of alloying 1 ? 50 atom % platinum group metals (M= Pt, Pd, Rh) and 5 wt% first row transition metals (M = Ti, Mn, Fe, Co) were studied. Even low additions of PGMs (1 at.%) cause significant shifts to lower temperature regions of activity and the largest shift is obtained for Rh. For Rh this is interpreted as a strong synergistic interaction between Rh and Au. Possibly related to the Rh effect, Co is the only other metal studied that lowers the temperature of NOx reduction. The other first row transition metals inhibit the reduction reaction.

MARKED improvement in the serviceability of sucker rods has been effected in the last two years, partly because of the insistent necessity for greater economy in the operating costs of crude oil production growing out of the general industrial depression and partly because many of the recently developed fields have imposed more severe operating conditions upon both surface and underground equipment. The latter is particularly true of Kansas, where practically all of the oil produced. is associated with damaging amounts of hydrogen sulfide brine and where the method of establishing potential production demands equipment capable of being operated at maximum capacity without interruptions. The decline of flush production in the Oklahoma City field created new problems in deep-well pumping on a scale heretofore unequaled and the increased proportion of water it has been necessary to produce in the fields of the Greater Seminole area presented conditions that were acutely in need of betterment. The problem in the latter fields was complicated by the shift towards sulfide characteristics, which accompanied water encroachment, and it is probably true that nowhere, at the present time, are pump¬ing conditions generally as severe as in this territory. The Mid-Continent district, therefore, has become the proving ground for the numerous materials that have been proposed for sucker-rod fabrication. The information that ultimately will be obtained from an unprecedented amount of field experimentation will pay ample dividends when the decline of East Texas increases the demand for the vast reserves of sour crude in West Texas. It is a rare occurrence in industry that the use of such a simple piece of equipment as a sucker rod presents so complicated a problem for solution. As proof of this, it is only necessary to consider the numerous types of sucker rods on .the market at the present time and contrast this condition with that of less than four years ago, when it was the common aim of manufacturers to develop a single sucker rod for all conditions of

THE fact that little if anything has appeared in the technical press or in the Transactions of the Institute on the subject of roll shells proper, used in various grinding appliances such as Cornish rolls or Chilean mills, may be taken as an incentive, if not an excuse, for the present article. No attempt is made to enter into a. discussion as to the theory or mathematics of crushing as performed by rolls, the subject being treated in a general way with respect to the manufacture of roll shells 'and some salient points touching on their adaptability and wear in service. While it stands to reason that skill coupled with judgment in the mechanical design of rolls, Chilean mills or other types of grinding machinery, with special reference to strength of parts, nicety of adjustment and other mechanical features, stand for efficiency in their operation .and satisfaction in service, the exceedingly important item. of roll shells or other wearing parts entering into their construction should not be lost sight of. In other words, a well-designed piece of grinding machinery is just as inefficient in service, when equipped with poor roll shells or shells made of the wrong or an inferior grade of metal, as good roll shells made according to the best practice the steel maker knows, working on an old or antiquated set of rolls. Unfortunately there is a tendency occasionally for the machinery builder to blame the steel maker or vice versa if roll shells do not wear well or evenly, or if they break before being worn down to their ultimate thin point. There is no occasion for this attitude, as the product, of each must stand on its own merits. But it is essential that the two work in harmony since the machinery builder usually does not furnish the shells for his rolls or grinding mills, but depends on the steel maker, who makes a specialty of this rolled product, to give the particular needed element of efficiency to his machine.

The response of two structures to blast-induced ground vibrations were evaluated and compared in order to quantify the impact of different blasting operations, hard rock and soft rock blasting, upon the structures movements. The first instrumented structure was a residential type, located in the operational area of a coal mine, were blasting is conducted in soft rocks, such as siltstone and coal, with compressive strength ranging from 20 to 50 MPa. Blasting is characterized by low benches, with hole lengths averaging 5.5 m (18 ft) and low powder factors, 140 to 210 g/m3 (0.236 to 0.354 lb/yd3), resulting in very little horizontal movement of the rock during the blast. The second structure was a commercial building, located in a basalt quarry (compressive strength between 109 and 180 MPa), where blasting is conducted in 12 m (39.4 ft) benches with powder factors ranging from 200 to 350 g/m3 (0.337 to 0.590 lb/yd3). Velocity sensors were placed on the structure walls to measure wall displacements and calculate blast-induced strains in the walls, and these results were compared with the driving ground excitations. The calculated strains were compared with the limits of rupture of the cement grout used as mortar between bricks and as wall coating, considered to be the weakest material in the structure composition. The blast-induced response of existing cracks in the structures were also measured using displacement gages and compared to the daily influence of weather fluctuations, such as changes in temperature and humidity, on crack movement. The results show that for the same levels of ground motions the structures present different movement, resulting in distinct levels of induced strains on the walls depending on the geology. The influence of long-term temperature and humidity variations on crack movements on both structures is very similar, during the same seasons of the year. Crack response to long-term weather changes is 2.5 to 3.5 times greater than blast influences.

Precious gold and silver markets support substantial activity in the search for and development of improved and unconventional ore and tailing processing methods. The need for such methods 1s strengthened by consideration of increasingly low grade and refractory ores and old tailing reserves. As background for this review of new and unconventional precious metal processing, recent USBM data (1981) show annual world gold production of about 40.8 million troy ounces. In the U.S. about half the 2.8 million ounce consumption was used for jewelry and the arts, 39 percent for industry, and 8 percent for dental purposes. World silver production in 1981 was about 365 million ounces. Domestic usage the same year was about 117 million ounces. More than $ was used for photography and 30 percent for electrical and electronics. By process, about 1 percent of U.S. production of gold came from amalgamation, 66 percent from cyanidation, 31 percent from smelting ores and concentrates, and 2 percent from placers. As for silver, about 11 percent is from cyanidation and 89 percent from smelting ores and concentrates. Evidently the search for innovative and unconventional precious metal processes must include gravity concentration, froth flotation, hydrometallurgical, and electrometallurgical methods. Although smelting processes are equally important, they largely comprise nonferrous metal technology, and are not discussed here.

The Drummond Basin is a large intracratonic basin which developed in central Queensland during Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous times. It is postulated that the Drummond Basin developed as a foreland basin, to the west of a probable west dipping continental margin volcanic arc and subduction zone. The Drummond Basin sequence has been s,ibdivided into three tectono-sedirnentary cycles. Cycle I forms the base of the sequence and comprises thick sequences of intermediate to felsic volcanics and proximal volcanolithic sediments. The volcanics, particularly in the northeast of the basin, occur in separate sub-basins around what were probably isolated eruptive centres. In contrast, the rocks of Cycle 2 and Cycle 3 have been deposited during episodes of broad, basin wide subsidence. Five major igneous episodes, some of which may be co-magmatic, are recorded in the eastern Drummond Basin and environs between the Late Devonian and the Early Permian. The first and second episodes occurred during the Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous and are represented by the volcanics in Cycle 1 and Cycle 3. The third episode involves the intrusion of granitoids of Early Carboniferous age into the Drummond Basin sequence. These occur in the Ukalunda area and are related to gold mineralisation at Ukalunda and Valhalla. Episode four includes the felsic volcanics of the Bulgonunna Volcanics. This episode does not appear to he broadly auriferous but gold mineralisation does occur in possible basal Bulgonunna Volcanics at Mount Coolon. The final episode includes a suite of granitic intrusives which intrude the Bulgonunna Volcanics and which are considered to be co-magmatic with them. These intrusives do not appear to be generally associated with gold mineralisation. Gold mineralisation is widespread in the north- eastern Drummond Basin and environs. It is probable that the gold mineralisation is concentrated in epithermal cells during the Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous volcanic cycles. This style of mineralisation appears to be related to tectonic setting in modern analogues.

TRANSMANCHE-LINK is responsible for designing, developing and implementing the project for a fixed link under the English Channel, comprising two running tunnels of diameter 7.6 metres and a service tunnel of diameter 4.8 metres. The three tunnels will all be 50 km long, with 37 km bored through chalk marl at a depth of 40 metres under the sea bed. The tunnels will be driven from both sides of the channel from intermediate addits above the coastline on either side with a 55 m access shaft at Sangatte in France and two "descenderies" or inclined tunnels addits and a shaft at Shakespeare Cliff on the English side. A total of eleven tunnel boring machines will drive the 150 km of tunnels. The major part of the tunnel linings will be built of precast reinforced concrete segments, and two plants have been specially built to produce the necessary 725,000 segments. Seven million cubic metres will be evacuated on wagons along the tunnels and then lifted by belt conveyor on the English side, and by hydraulic mucking from the bottom on the French side. Preliminary work started early in 1987 with manufacture of the first boring machines, construction of five precasting plants, boring of the Sangatte shaft in preparation of the Shakespeare Cliff entrances.
