Reduce the dust levels to which jacksetters and helpers on auger mining sections are exposed by identifying viable, effective methods for control-ling respirable dust on these sections. Approach The Bureau of Mines con-ducted laboratory tests and respirable dust surveys to identify the factors that distinguish clean auger mining operations from dusty ones. Study Results Results of the Bureau's study revealed that ventilation is the most important element of auger mining dust control. The four must important venitilation parameters are airflow, curtain configuration, curtain setback, and curtain installation.

The present paper was suggested by the paper read by Mr. R. W. Hunt at the New York Meeting, in February last, on rail-sections (Trans., xvii., p. 778)) in the discussion of which I brought forward some of the facts and observations here stated. Professional duties having prevented me from writing out my part of that discussion in time for its publication in the volume containing Mr. Hunt's paper, I take the opportunity to present it in separate form and greater fulness. The striking features of the series of rail-sections submitted by Mr. Hunt are their shallow heads and heavy bases. In these respects they are quite similar to the section of the 80-1b. rail, which I designed in 1883 to meet the requirements of the traffic of the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad. Before the adoption of the 80-1b. rail, this road had modified its 65-1b. section from a shallow head with rounding sides and quite heavy base to one having a deep head and thin base. All the leading railroads had changed from the earlier sections of steel rails to those having deep heads and thin bases, conforming to the recommendations of the Committee on Rails of the American Society of Civil Engineers. It is but proper to say that the committee's investigations upon the wear of rails were made upon the rails manufactured under a practice quite different from that which obtained after the committee's recommendations were carried into effect. The results in actual service have been contrary to what was expected. Fig. 1 shows my 80-1b. section of 1883. Before designing this rail I had taken, at different times, a series of diagrams of the condition of tracks, with my car, on the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad, all of the New England railroads, and all but one of the trunk lines. My diagrams gave me an opportunity which could not otherwise have been obtained to see the wear of great numbers of sections of rails under widely varying conditions of traffic.

THE upper Mississippi Valley zinc-lead area was the first major lead-producing section in the United States. The lead ore, found near the surface in crevices, was relatively pure galena that could be smelted directly into lead, at first in log hearth furnaces and later in more efficient blast type furnaces. French Canadian fur traders encouraged the Indians to mine the lead ore and showed them how to smelt it into lead that had a high value for bullets1 Nicholas Perrot found lead ore on the Mississippi River bluffs near the junction of Wisconsin and Illinois and in 1690 established a trading post on the Wisconsin side of the river opposite the present site of Dubuque, Iowa.2 Shortly after 1720 discovery of Mine La Mott in Missouri diverted considerable attention from the Upper Mississippi area. Mining continued on a desultory basis with operations concentrated in the Galena, Illinois-Dubuque, area. In 1740 at least 20 miners were at work in the Fever River area around Galena and are reported to have shipped 2500 70-lb pigs of lead to Kaskaskia in 1741." Julien Dubuque established a mining and smelting operation in 1790 near the city that bears his name and was granted sole right to exploit the mining operations on the lands of the Sauk and the Fox Indians. He is reported to have produced 30,000 70-lb pigs of lead in 1805. Following the death of Dubuque in 1810 the Indians refused to let the white miners enter their lands, and little was done on the Iowa side of the river until the Indians were removed by treaty with the United States government in 1832." Early mining was entirely for lead but as the crevices were followed down, increasing percentages of zinc sulphide and zinc carbonate were encountered and at first discarded. Later a market became available for the zinc ores, and hand jigging devices were made to separate the lead, the zinc, and the rock or waste materials. The first record of zinc production from the area is for 1860. Production of zinc passed that of lead before 1900, reached a peak of 64,000 short tons in 1917, fell off rapidly and continually to about 2000 short tons in 1938, and since 1940 has ranged from 11,000 to 19,000 short tons. Lead has been of considerably less importance since 1900, and at present only about 10 pct as much lead as zinc is produced. Practically all of the zinc ore has come from orebodies that are rather flat and wide with considerable length as compared to width. Most of the early lead came from the crevice type deposit, but present production is from the predominately flat zinc orebodies. The Graham-Snyder orebody, scene of Eagle Picher operations, is practically all zinc with little or no lead being recovered. Marcasite, present in varying amounts, makes production of finished concentrates by gravity separation impractical. Satisfactory lead and zinc concentrates have been produced since flotation was introduced in the area in 1927. An acid recovery plant was operated for about 20 years after World War I, but it has been dismantled, and no recovery of the iron sulphides in the ores of the district is being made at the present time. In June 1950 there were three companies operating mines and mills, Tri-State Zinc Co., Calumet & Hecla Consolidated Copper Co., and Eagle Picher Mining and Smelting Co. The Vinegar Hill Zinc Co. had completed a shaft at a new orebody and had started to develop the mine which will supply the Cuba City mill. The Cuba Mining Co. was holding the Andrews Mine inactive. Arizona embraces portions of two major western-U.S. physiographic-geologic provinces and a smaller, local one. These exert fundamental control over the geologic framework and associated earth-material resources and potential. The Mogollon Rim diagonally crosses the State and separates the Colorado Plateau Province to the northeast from the Transition Zone and Basin and Range Province to the southwest. More than 90 percent of the population, production of nonfuel minerals, agricultural land, and water resources are in the Basin and Range part of the State. In 1981 Arizona was ranked number one in the Nation with respect to the value ($2.56 billion) of nonfuel-mineral production. About 8.2 percent of this amount ($212.9 million) can be attributed to nonmetallic (industrial) materials. Although a diversity of nonmetallic substances is produced and some are exported, the bulk is utilized within the State and is directly related to market growth. Since 1950 there has been a fourfold increase in Arizona's population, a concomitant twelvefold jump in sand-gravel production (tons), and a twentyfold increase in "stone" production. New industries developed during this time include cement, salt (and storage of liquid petroleum gas products in solution cavities in salt), zeolite, hydrofrac sand, vitrified clay pipe, crushed marble products (teed additive, pool sand, roofing granules, etc.), and "rock" wool. Most of these newer industries serve out-of-State as well as in-State markets. In 1981 at least 225 industrial mineral or rock deposits were being worked to produce about 10 tons of material per Arizona resident per year. In 1980 the relative values of basic industrial minerals produced in the State, by major group, were cement and lime (51.6 percent); gravel (26.5 percent); sand (11.8 percent); stone (4.6 percent); and others (5.5 percent). Detailed knowledge of the nonmetallic rock-and-mineral content of most Arizona ranges and basins is lacking. Exploration opportunities in this sun-belt growth region appear encouraging.

Book Review MANAGEMENT AND MEN. By Meyer Bloomfield, Boston. The Century Co., New York, 1919, pp. 584, H.X. 5 1/2. $3.50. This hook is an exposition of English efforts to solve the problem of labor unrest in England. The first six chapters are reprinted from articles published in the Satur-day Evening Post, for whom the author went to England to study the problem at first hand. These articles deal with housing, increased production, eliminating the internal friction in the industrial machine and a chapter each devoted to the view-point of employer and employee. These chapters are written in the easily readable magazine style and give a complete general survey of the particular solution being tried. Perhaps their greatest., certainly not their least, worth lies in the fact that they form a vehicle for unusually voluminous appendices containing in full the famous Whitley Reports which are the basis of the new movement, together with various reports, which, except for this publication, would be largely inaccessible to those inter-ested in this country. The Whitley scheme considers each industry a unit and proposes to establish therein a Joint Standing Industrial Council composed of representatives of employers and employees to consider appropriate matters affecting the industry at large. There is to be a District Council for each industry which will, as its name implies, deal with the clatters pertaining to that interest in. the particular district. The third and last body in this scheme of Industrial Parliament is the Works Committee, which is com-posed of representatives of the management and of the workers employed in particu-lar plants or mines to act in close cooperation With the district quid national machinery. The Whitley or similar schemes have been tried in many communities in England and the book contains interesting comments on the result obtained, it being notable that most of the objections conic from plants which have not tried the scheme. To assess the value of various subsidence mitigation techniques, twelve linear foundations were constructed above a longwall mine. The structures were monitored during and after undermining, and footing curvatures at the time of cracking were compared with predicted values. An unreinforced concrete footing sustained substantial damage. Other footings received varying degrees of damage, with inclusion of a sand layer significantly affecting performance. A post-tensioned concrete foundation suffered minimal cracking. Also, a technique developed by the Bureau of Mines is presented for determining the subsidence, slope, curvature and strain of the ground surface.

Apparently the widespread agitation for the codification of our mining laws has had its effect, and it is quite possible that Congress will take up the question during this present session. The greatest objection to our present statutes pertaining to metalliferous deposits seems to be directed against the law of the apex. Those who are not in favor of changing this law are very far in the minority and they apparently realize that it is useless to urge its retention. Next in importance to the repeal of the law of the apex, seems to be a widespread advocacy for the repeal of the law requiring discovery of mineral before a valid location of a mining claim can be made. To a lesser extent there appears to be a desire to have the law changed so as to allow patent for claims without mineral discoveries. The purpose of this article is to review the arguments in favor of the proposed change of the discovery requirement, to show some of the evils that may be expected to result therefrom, and to consider whether a system may be devised to correct the undesirable features of the present law in this respect and at the same time not expose the mining fraternity and the general public to the evils which would result from the repeal of this fundamental requirement. Under the law as at present framed, the validity of a mining location is dependent upon the fact of discovery of mineral within the boundaries of the land claimed. " * * * but no location of a mining claim shall be made until the discovery of the vein or lode within the limits of the claim located" (Sec. 2,320, U. S. Rev. Stat.). All authorities agree that discovery is the source of the miners' title. Lindley, in his valuable work on Mines (3d Ed., Sec. 335), lays down the rule in part as follows: "Discovery is the initial fact. Without that no right can be acquired. * * * Such discovery must precede the location, or be in advance of intervening rights. The proof of recording and marking a claim will not authorize the court to presume a discovery." As is well stated by the U. S. Supreme Court in Erhard v. Boaro (113 U.S. 536):

A GPSS/H simulation is beeing done for a traditional smelter of copper, which envolves a reberberatory furnace, a set of Peirce Smith converters (PSC) and a refining furnace. The objective is to try different plant layouts, being the handling of liquid material at high temperature one the mainly concern, this envolves a study of the ladles and cranes used. Some of the modifications that can be evaluated through the model is the role of oxygen potential when tonnage oxygen is used, number of cranes, PSCs in operation, etc.

THE molybdenite deposits at Climax, Cool., have recently attracted considerable notice, because of their great size, as compared with other known deposits of the same mineral. Climax station, on the. Colorado Southern narrow-gage railway, was at one time the Fremont Pass station on the Denver & Rio Grande. It is 1412 miles northeast of Leadville, and exactly on the divide between the headwaters of the Arkansas and Blue Rivers. Climax station is 11,300 ft. (3444 m.) above sea level. The working tunnel of the molybdenum mine is about 1 mile from the railroad, and 900 ft. above it, at an elevation of 12,200 feet. The climatic conditions are severe, and snow can be expected during any month of the year. Winter sets in not later than Nov. 1, the snowfall is very heavy, and the ground remains covered with snow until June 1, and sometimes even later. From June 1 to Oct. 1, there is much rain and a little snow falls in the late afternoon nearly every day. In October, 1917, there was one of the biggest snowstorms and blizzards of the year. Being just on the divide, constant strong winds blow the fine, dry snow with such force that, during most of the winter, outside work of any kind -is accomplished under most trying conditions. Within a few miles of Climax, some of the richest gold placers of Colorado occur. One of them, McNulty Gulch, was just across on the northeastern flank of Bartlett mountain. This mountain, therefore; was well prospected, and the presence of a bluish mineral and a yellowish one resembling sulphur was known to the old prospectors. They thought for many years that the blue mineral was graphite, and it is difficult to say when it first became definitely known that it was molybdenite. Claims had been staked as .early as 1896, but it is evident that the prospectors at that time were looking for gold. In 1902; several claims were acquired by H. Leal, who drove a tunnel about 900 ft. (274 in.) long, probably to intersect a fault, which shows on the surface, and was thought to be a possible gold carrier. Gold was not found in paying quantities, but throughout its length the tunnel passed through a fractured silicified granite, showing a fairly uniform distribution of a fine-grained bluish mineral, which was finally determined as molybdenite. The Czechoslovak Scientific-Technical Institute has arranged the international conference 'Hornicka Ostrava' for four or five days at the end of October, 1969, as part of the preparation for the international 'Miners' Congress' on deep coalextraction in 1970. The keynote of the conference is 'New Techniques in coal mining,' and will be covered by five groups dealing mainly with: 1. New trends in the opening of mines, optimal parameters, projections, equipment, utilization of computers for economic analyses, etc. 2. THE solid solutions which aluminum forms with copper, and with magnesium and silicon, are not extensive, and accordingly could not be expected to form Widmanstätten figures profusely nor with great ease. A study of the Widmanstätten figures in these systems seemed desirable, however, because of the interest which these alloys bear towards age-hardening theories resulting from the necessary relationship between the age-hardening phenomena and the atomic processes leading to the formation of Widmanstätten figures.1 ALLOYS OF ALUMINUM WITH COPPER The most accurate determination f the solid solubility, of copper in aluminum seems to be that by Dix and Richardson,2 whose results are represented in Fig. 1. According to this work, aluminum dissolves 5.6 weight per cent of copper at 548°, and less than one per cent at room temperature. Judging from the constitutional diagram, this solid solution on cooling tends to precipitate the compound CuAl2, and this conclusion has been confirmed experimentally by Schmid and Wassermann .3

Most of the siliceous rocks of the Arkansas Novaculite are novaculite, but they also include some chert, siliceous shale and, rarely, sandstone. Novaculite is defined as a homogeneous mostly white or light-colored rock, translucent on thin edges, with a dull to waxy Juster, and comprised almost entirely of microcrystalline quartz. The most plausible theory of origin for novaculite is that primary silica from submarine volcanism was picked up by organisms and deposited as amorphous silica, which was subsequently converted to microcrystalline quartz (novaculite) through diagenesis. The Arkansas Novaculite crops out over an east-west distance of 200 miles in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma. Three divisions of the formation have been defined: a Lower Division, almost entirely massive light-colored novaculite; a Middle Division of interbedded dark chert and shale; and an Upper Division of massive calcareous novaculite. The Lower Division and most of the Middle Division are Devonian in age, and the remainder of the Middle Division and all of the Upper Division are Mississippian. The massive novaculites of the Upper and Lower Division attain their maximum development along the southern and central outcrop belts of the formation in Arkansas, and it is these rocks that are the source of current silica production. The calcareous novaculite of the Upper Division weathers readily to a light-colored, porous, less brittle rock, and in places to tripoli deposits. Currently tripoli is mined from a single deposit near. Hot Springs, Arkansas, and the rock is processed for highly specialized filler and abrasive applications. In the vicinity of Hot Springs, Arkansas, certain novaculite layers from the Lower Division with unique textural characteristics are quarried and processed into whetstones. Several small quarries produce this rock for two local and one out-of-state whetstone-fabricating plants. Chemical analyses of composite samples of novaculite from both the Upper and Lower Divisions taken at widely separated localities average 99 percent SiOz indicating a substantial resource of high-silica rock.

A correlation is presented for predicting the viscosities of light paraffin hydrocarbon mixtures such as natural gases for temperatures from o° to 4o0°F. and for pressures fro1 atmospheric to I0,000 lb. per sq. in. The correlation is based on the viscosity data for the methane-propane system and requires only a knowledge of the molecular weight of the naturaI gas. The viscosities of natural gases reported in the literature up to 2500 lb. were reproduced by the correlation with an average deviation of 5.8 per cent. Introduction The viscosity of a natural gas is required whenever calculations are made of the pressure drop that occurs while the gas flows through pipes or porous media. Methods of predicting the viscosities of gases at the present operating pressures are not available. This paper presents a simple method of predicting the viscosity of a natural gas in the single-phase region from its molecular weight, temperature, and pressure. Viscosity oF Methane-propane Mixtures The viscosity of methane, propane, and four of their binary mixtures, 20,40, 60, and 80 mol per cent, have been determined for pressures from 400 to 5000 lb. per sq. in. and temperatures from 77" to 437 F., with an experimental accuracy of 3.2 per cent.2 The apparatus used in the investigation was a modification of that employed in previous studiesaJ4 on the viscosity of normal paraffin hydrocarbons. It consists of a viscosimeter of the rolling-ball, inclined-tube type,5>k7 with auxiliary equipment for making up and charging binary mixtures into the viscosimeter.~ The viscosity data on the methane-propane mixtures have been plotted as a function of molecular weight with lines of constant pressure, charts of constant temperature in Figs. A correlation is presented for predicting the viscosities of light paraffin hydrocarbon mixtures such as natural gases for temperatures from o° to 4o0°F. and for pressures fro1 atmospheric to I0,000 lb. per sq. in. The correlation is based on the viscosity data for the methane-propane system and requires only a knowledge of the molecular weight of the naturaI gas. The viscosities of natural gases reported in the literature up to 2500 lb. were reproduced by the correlation with an average deviation of 5.8 per cent. Introduction The viscosity of a natural gas is required whenever calculations are made of the pressure drop that occurs while the gas flows through pipes or porous media. Methods of predicting the viscosities of gases at the present operating pressures are not available. This paper presents a simple method of predicting the viscosity of a natural gas in the single-phase region from its molecular weight, temperature, and pressure. Viscosity oF Methane-propane Mixtures The viscosity of methane, propane, and four of their binary mixtures, 20,40, 60, and 80 mol per cent, have been determined for pressures from 400 to 5000 lb. per sq. in. and temperatures from 77" to 437 F., with an experimental accuracy of 3.2 per cent.2 The apparatus used in the investigation was a modification of that employed in previous studiesaJ4 on the viscosity of normal paraffin hydrocarbons. It consists of a viscosimeter of the rolling-ball, inclined-tube type,5>k7 with auxiliary equipment for making up and charging binary mixtures into the viscosimeter.~ The viscosity data on the methane-propane mixtures have been plotted as a function of molecular weight with lines of constant pressure, charts of constant temperature in Figs. Ask someone what they can tell you about the Royal Canadian Mint and most likely the first thing that they will mention, is coinage. The Royal Canadian Mint manufactures Canada's one-cent coins, nickels, dimes and quarters - over 1 billion per year. Most of these coins use copper and nickel as base material, and all of this metal is mined, refined and processed in Canada prior to being shipped to the mint for coin production. In 1985 alone, 1270 metric tons of Canadian nickel and 2160 metric tons of Canadian copper were absorbed in circulating coinage. July 1987 will have marked the introduction of Canada's new one dollar coin, an important new addition to Canada's monetary system. The first phase of this program will consume about 2,235 metric tons of Canadian nickel in the initial production run. Annual requirements in subsequent years are estimated at 225 metric tons. The Royal Canadian Mint is also a major producer of circulating coinage for foreign countries. Since the state-of-the-art Winnipeg plant swung into full production in 1976 the Mint has struck more than 5.2 billion coins for some 35 nations around the world. 1985 sales have increased almost 6 fold over 1984. 1987 already shows commitments for a further significant increase in volume in this business. The use of Canadian metals in export to foreign nations as coinage adds still more to the Royal Canadian Mint's key role as a major market maker for Canada's mining industry. The success of the Mint in this realm can be directly traced to it's 75 years as one of the world's most important refiners of gold. When considering the question of future demand for crude petroleum in California, one must first decide whether it is to be approached in the light of the definition of "demand" when used in economics; i.e., "The quantity of any commodity required or sought in the market," or in the light of markets developed to dispose of total supply. Therefore, is the California demand of future years to be predicated on a continuation of supplying markets developed following the surplus production commencing in 1922, or predicated on supplying what would be termed economic markets ? If the latter, what are economic markets ? Obviously, the Pacific Coast States and Canada, Alaska, Hawaii and probably the Pacific side of Central and South America, can be considered as normal markets for California petroleum products. While there have been small quantities of gasoline shipped into the PacSc Coast from East Texas, transportation costs, plus import taxes in the case of foreign oil, are a sufficient barrier to justify considering that these markets will be retained. But how about our participation in Atlantic and Pacific foreign and intercoastal markets? During the five years preceding 1931 California shipped substantial quantities of gasoline to the United Kingdom and to France, Germany and Italy. During recent years our business in European markets has been restricted to occasional shipments of gasoline and Kettleman crude. This loss of business is occasioned by the development of production in the Mid-Continent, principally East Texas, and in Iraq, Rumania, Venezuela and other closer producing areas, which makes it impossible at the prevailing crude-oil prices for California to be competitive in supplying any substantial portion of these markets. It is therefore apparent that under a stabilized price structure that will return the California producer a reasonable price for his oil, future Atlantic foreign -business will be restricted to occasional spot cargo sales.
