For the past quarter of century, much more effort and research have been expended in developing the "optimum" ultimate pit limit design algorithms and much less to solving the "optimum" open pit production sequencing. However, the potential economic benefit to an operating mine is far greater for the latter than the former. Unfortunately, the problem of "optimum" open-pit production sequencing has not been fully solved to date. This paper first reviews the past and currently used methodologies for developing this sequence. The staggered pit phase geometry problem of advanced stripping and operational constraints such as ore and waste tonnage requirements by period and necessary contiguity of mining faces are the main reasons why the "optimum" production sequencing problem has not been solved as yet. This paper also explains why any method which attempts to simplify the problem using ultimate pit limit design algorithm will fail to reach an "optimum" solution.

INTRODUCTION The Southern California Rapid Transit District has commenced Preliminary Engineering for an 18 mile Metro Rail Project. This initial line will consist of approximate 36 miles of single track tunnel and 16 subsurface stations. The estimated cost of $1.2 Billion in 1978 dollars, places it in the category of a major public works project. During the planning phase of this project, particular attention was paid to the National Academy of Science Reports, "Better Contracting for Underground Construction" (1974), "Better Management of Major Underground Construction Projects" (1978), and "Management of Urban Construction Programs" (1980). The improved transportation service that this project will furnish the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area will result in significant benefits that will add immensely to the economic well being of the community-which is one of Webster's definitions of improved productivity. RAPID TRANSIT PROJECT BACKGROUND Rapid Transit studies have been going c in the. Las Angeles area since 1925. In 1969 and 1974, sales tax ballot issues were not adopted by the electorate of the county mainly because the pre-ponderous of County voters are outside the City of Los Angeles.

Secretary E. H. Benjamin, of the California Miners' Association, has proposed and begun, in co-operation with the testing laboratory of the University of California, at Berkeley, a series of tests which should prove of great interest and practical use to all persons making extensive application of steel wire cables, and especially to miners who run them in deep mines. Mr. Benjamin is endeavoring to obtain pieces of cable both new, and old and worn, from every deep mine of importance on the Pacific Coast, together with all the data obtainable concerning their manufacture and particular use. Pieces from each sample will be broken ill the laboratory before mentioned: and as far as possible the effects of winding around drums or pulleys ; of sudden starting and stopping when loaded; of heavy shocks, and of the general wear and tear of the cables, will be ascertained by these tests. The Olsen testing-machine of 200,000 pounds capacity will be used to break the cables, and the rupturing force, in different instances, will be applied slowly and also rapidly, in order to make the tests comparable as far as possible with the practical use of the cables themselves. All information and data available should be obtained for each specimen sent to the laboratory, the name of the manufacturer, the date of making, strength of cable when new and unrusted, as well as the circumstances and conditions of the practical use of the cable. Having this information before us, we shall be able to tell, approximately at least, the effects of age, rust, wear and tear, shocks, etc.; and perhaps be enabled to draw the line of limitation beyond which it would be no longer safe to use a cable of known manufacture. Moreover, by means of such tests we may, perhaps, he able to recommend worn cables for other uses, less severe in character, thereby prolonging the life of their effective usefulness. This chapter contains the edited transcript of the "Gold Heap Leach Information Exchange" session that was held at the 1990 SME/AIME Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah. The exchange occurred on the afternoon of February 27, 1990. The session was intended to act as a forum for discussing some of the more prominent operating problems associated with heap leaching precious metals. The information exchange was very successful. The exchange consisted of several panelists introducing and discussing different topics, follow by a comment and question period. This transcript contains the panelists' presentations as well as comments and questions from the floor and the panel. Extraneous comments and remarks have been edited out. Antamina is the largest skarn in the world with a resource of ~2,968 Mt averaging 0.89% Cu, 0.77% Zn, 11 g/t Ag and 0.02% Mo (Glencore, 2015). The Antamina skarn surrounds an intrusive complex consisting of 4 porphyry centers comprised of at least 10 phases emplaced between 10.96 ± 0.03 Ma and 10.23 ± 0.07 Ma (U-Pb zircon; this study). Major phases in each porphyry center include: P1 (early), P2 (inter-mineral), and P3 (late). P1 is related to skarn formation; P2 and P3 cross-cut skarns and do not contain skarn alteration. Re-Os molybdenite ages reveal an early mineralization stage in skarns (10.58 ± 0.07 Ma to 10.39 ± 0.05 Ma) and a late stage in P2 and P3 (10.05 ± 0.06 Ma to 9.68 ± 0.05 Ma). Zircon and molybdenite ages generally decrease from NE to SW along the axis of the deposit, and record ~1.5 Ma of magmatic-hydrothermal activity

Introduction It is the morning after and there is one monumental hangover among many, if not most, of the oil companies that invested in mining in the past decade. How an oil company looks at mining depends on the time period. A few years back, around the time of investment, they were probably looking at a balance sheet of their own that was beginning to go wild. Many of their commodity prices already increased two-, three-, or fourfold, with no end in sight. There was a need to invest their earnings someplace before the stockholders or the government got too interested. And that someplace needed to be an industry where their own management skills could be applied. In mining there was an industry amazingly similar to their own. Both worked with nonrenewable natural resources, dealt with the same types of government agencies, and had the same type of critics and pressures from the general population. Oil executives saw mining as an industry that was somewhat backward as compared with their own. They also saw how a generous ration of the capital and management skills, so handsomely bestowed upon the oil industry, could be used to great advantage. But, looking at mining through the eyes of an oil company today, this is what might be seen: • An industry that has been spectacularly unprofitable for the past few years; • An industry of many commodities, any of which can go bad on short notice for protracted periods, for a variety of unpredictable and uncontrollable reasons, or for no reason at all; • A labor-intensive industry, often beset by labor problems. And with only limited potential for further economic mechanization or automation in today's primitive mining environment; • An industry confronted with external, foreign, and political problems, with no reasonable expectation of near-term relief; and • An industry that does not appear to have many "up" periods in its immediate future. And, there is little chance for either big, fast bucks or long periods of large, steady earnings. What Went Wrong? The visions of a few years back seemed as correct then as today's viewpoints seem to be now. What happened to change these views? What went wrong? The simplest and easiest answer is that if the economy was normal back then, nothing would have gone wrong. This is an easy answer but, unfortunately, probably incorrect. Let us take a broad overview. Certain events enabled and prompted oil companies to invest heavily in mining. These same events were major factors in precipitating the worldwide recession that has grievously injured mining and has brought those mining investments into disrepute. An empirical investigation was conducted to formulate a design criteria for predicting the beach profile of hydraulically deposited tailings. Field data were obtained from mining operations producing gold sulfides, silver, molybdenum, copper, platinum, and uranium. Site-specific parameters were collected that included the beach slopes, tailings soil properties, slurry properties, and the slurry distribution system characteristics. Each of the beach profiles were dimensionlessly plotted, and regression expressions were computed. It was determined that either a power expression or exponential expression closely predicted each beach slope. A general power expression and a general exponential ex¬pression were developed resulting in a design criteria. A procedure was formulated to determine which expression, power or exponential, is applicable to any specific site. A slope designation chart was developed as a function of the discharge, the tailings critical tractive shear stress, and the inertial forces exerted by the slurry on the beach.

After dinner, Mr. Carstarphen gave a most interesting illustrated talk on the subject of aerial tramways. The views-showed the various forms of aerial tramways and three' unique installations, one carrying 285 tons of coal an hour, undoubtedly the maximum quantity transported by any tramway up to this time. The Bureau of Mines studied three processes for preparing NaAl(OH)2C03) the intermediate compound which is calcined to produce alkalized alumina: (1) Mixing of Na2 C03 and of A12 (S04)3 solutions, (2) digestion of aluminum hydroxide in solutions of Na2C03 and NaHC03 at 90° C, and (3) addition of CO2 at 25° C to caustic solutions of aluminum to precipitate aluminum hydroxide followed by digestion at 90° C. The first process had the highest raw material consumption and washing requirements, and successful application of process 2 depended upon the availability of active aluminum hydroxide. Process 3 was the most effective, considering both process technology and raw material requirements. Procedures were also investigated for washing, filtering, drying, and calcining precipitates. Analytical methods included X-ray diffraction, atomic absorption spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis.

The lignite mines in the Latrobe Valley of Victoria/Australia have been using continuously operating mining systems for more than 50 years. The relatively small bucket chain dredgers of the early years have been progressively displaced by bucket wheel dredgers with increasing size, increasing capacity and increasing service weight. The large machines for the new open pit Loy Yang have a bucket wheel outreach of 46m, an effective capacity of 3350 bm' coal/h respective 2500 bm' overburden/h and a serv- ice weight of approx. 4500 t. The time between signing of con- tract and starting of operation for these machines is at least four years. The high service weight, the resulting high capital invest- ment and the long period for design, design review, manufac- turing, erection and commissioning of these machines directed the SECV to investigate a possible application of compact dredgers for the Latrobe Valley.

"The Line Creek Mine of Crows Nest Resources started mining coal in the fall of 1981. There are seven mineable seams with thicknesses ranging from 1.5 to 13 metres and with dips varying from 0 degrees to 60 degrees. This, together with internal partings and the very friable nature of the coal, creates a number of mining problems.The coal is divided into zones depending on the dip of the seam. Each zone requires a different mining technique to ensure optimum recovery and low dilution while still keeping fines to a minimum.Line Creek employs a combination of hydraulic front shovels and backhoes to mine its coal without blasting or use of dozers. This has been very successful in reducing the proportion of fine coal hauled to the plant, thus improving quality control and reducing costs in coal processing.There have been a number of other benefits from the use of excavators instead of more conventional methods. These include better selectivity, good cleanup, reduction in traffic at the face and lower cost.IntroductionThe Line Creek Mine is situated approximately 25 km north of Sparwood in southeastern British Columbia (Fig. I). Preproduction stripping began in J98J with the first coal shipments made in 1982. In 1983 the mine produced 2.1 million tonnes of raw coal.Similar to other East Kootenay coals, the seams at Line Creek are characterized by their friability, producing a large proportion of fine coal during mining. In an attempt to reduce these fines Crows Nest Resources has instituted the use of hydraulic excavators to mine and load the coal.Hydraulic excavators offer other substantial advantages over front-end loaders and dozers, which has been the conventional system in other mines in the area."

This paper reports our results on the application of a novel process for the spontaneous and sustained reduction and recovery of elemental silver and gold on an electroactive polymer surface. This work incorporates the metal recovery from photographic films (silver) and goldsmith residues (gold), by direct contact of metal containing solutions with polymer. The performance on such process of electrochemically and chemically prepared polyaniline (P ANI) is evaluated. SEM coupled with EDX and XRD analyses confirmed the presence of metallic silver and gold deposited onto polymeric material.

Hyperbaric filtration for the dewatering of fine coal cleaned by froth flotation was evaluated on a laboratory scale. A laboratory pressure filtration procedure designed to obtain a uniform cake structure from dilute slurries containing a significant amount of coarse material is described. Baseline tests were conducted to determine the optimum operating conditions for the eventual application of the process to a continuous pilot-scale hyperbaric filter. Investigated were filter operating parameters such as driving force, time, cake thickness, percent solids, viscosity and pH.

Techniques of testing perlite require a combination of art and science. The modifications made to the perlite Corp. vertical laboratory furnace include addition of instrumentation, flowmeters, vibrators, automatic feeders, and regulators. The basic testing sequence consists of expanded density, furnace yield, compacted density, percent sinkers, and compaction resistance. These tests are modified versions of those specified by the Perlite Institute. This sequence is designed as a preliminary evaluation of a material's suitability for horticultural-aggregate end uses rather than a detailed measure of filtration capability.

A sample of pyrrhotite flotation concentrate pulp assaying 15.3 g/t An, which had been prepared from an old tailing dump, was treated to extract the gold. Examination of the concentrate with an SEM showed that exposed or free native gold, 5-40 ¦m in diameter, was present but no locked gold was observed. Direct cyanidation of the concentrate to extract the gold showed that the flotation reagents present inhibited gold extraction. A range of pre-treatments was used to overcome these effects.Direct cyanidation for 48 h extracted only 26% of the gold, indicating possible contamination of the gold in the concentrate with flotation reagents. Pre-treatment of the concentrate pulp by aeration for 24 h, or by 72 h aeration with an addition of 3.65 kg/t of sodium sulphite, gave little improvement in gold extraction by subsequent cyanidation. Pre-treatment by filtration, or by aeration with 12.5 L/t 100 volume hydrogen peroxide, followed by cyanidation for 48 h gave gold extractions in the range 67-77%. Combining filtration and an aeration period with hydrogen peroxide addition raised the subsequent cyanidation extraction of gold to 88%, giving a tailing assaying 1.5 g/t Au.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has undertaken an under-ground transit project to extend public transportation service from downtown Boston to the South Boston Piers area. This new system, known as the Transit way, will connect existing subway lines to this area which is comprised of approximately 300 acres, in light of the potential for 21 million square feet of development by 2010. This system includes construction of a concrete immersed tube tunnel crossing of Fort Point Channel. The crossing will be accomplished in the highly congested setting of down-town Boston and will be located just to the north of the famous Boston Tea Party ship exhibit and amid major Central Artery Construction activity. The most recent concrete tube constructed in the United States was in 1962. The Fort Point Channel Crossing will employ current design and construction methods commonly utilized in the Netherlands, Australia, Hong Kong and elsewhere. This paper will present the design philosophy, planning, and evaluation of alternative crossing methods which led to the selection of the concrete immersed tube tunnel and construction techniques envisioned for this particular application.
