"Years before the present iron and steel works were established at Sydney, several thriving although short-lived iron work s operated in Nova Scotia. These furnaces reflected the general nineteenth-century North American experience with iron work s. At the beginning of the century, small furnaces struggled to supply local needs. Charcoal was the principle fuel and water powered most furnace equipment. By the end of the century, a few huge primary iron and steel work s dominated production for Nova Scotia and the rest of Canada.Two sites achieved prominence in the nineteenth-century Nova Scotia iron industry: Londonderry and Ferrona. Londonderry, the larger and longer-lasting of the two sites, is today a small village on the south flank of the Cobequid Mountains, about 30 km west of Truro. Prior to the establishment of an iron works in 1849, no community existed. At the peak of operation in the 1880s, however, over 2,600 people were located there. The second site, Ferrona, today is a mere crossroads on the map, about 10 km south of New Glasgow. Following the construction of a blast furnace there in 1892, a small village grew up around the furnace, but once the furnace was blown out in 1904, the population gradually drifted away.Early HistoryThe history of Nova Scotia's iron industry began in 1604 when Samuel Champlain became the first European to identify iron ore in the future province. Despite this early acknowledgment, iron was not smelted commercially in Nova Scotia for another two hundred years. Although primitive smelters of the period produced more iron than could be used locally, early settlers depended on imports of iron from Britain and the United States."

"Lead free piezoelectric ceramics with high piezoelectric coefficients are in great demand for sensor and actuator applications. Synthesis and characterization study of one such lead free system, barium zirconate titanate - barium calcium titanate [xBZT-(1-x)BCT] (x = 0.5), via solgel method have been carried out. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the formation of single phase BZT-BCT nanoparticles (<50 nm). The as-synthesized powders were calcined at 1000°C and the powders were pressed into cylindrical pellets. Solid-state sintering of the green pellets at 1550°C for 2 hrs resulted in single phase perovskite structure. Hysteresis loops were obtained which indicates the ferroelectric nature ofBZT-BCT. The bulk ceramic samples with the highest sintered density (~93%) were subjected to electrical poling and the piezoelectric properties ( d33, kp, & i:,) were measured. The structure and piezoelectric properties were investigated and correlated for the given composition of the BZT-BCT system.IntroductionPiezoelectric ceramics are widely used in various sensors and actuators and most of the piezoelectric ceramics, which are presently used, are lead based, which contains at least 60% lead (Pb) by weight. The critical disadvantage of these lead based piezoelectric ceramics is their hazardous effect related to the toxicity of lead, which poses a serious environmental concern starting from their processing to the disposal stage[l]. It is well known that a material to be a good piezoelectric it requires a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) i.e. the composition induced phase transition between any two ferroelectric phases."

"Most underground diesel equipment is equipped with diesel oxidization catalysts (DOCs) to reduce carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions. DOCs do not alter nitrogen oxides concentrations but can promote the oxidization of nitric oxide (NO) to the more toxic nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Vale and CanmetMINING have been researching how to reduce worker exposure to diesel emissions by testing mining equipment DOCs. Results indicate a > 77% decrease in carbon monoxide concentration but a 46–315% increase in NO2 concentration for 8-mode test cycles. It is recommended that DOCs that increase NO2 emissions be evaluated regarding their continued use in underground operations.RÉSUMÉ La plupart des équipements miniers souterrains sont équipés de catalyseurs d’oxydation diesel (DOC) afin de réduire les émissions de monoxyde de carbone et d’hydrocarbures. Les DOC ne modifient pas les concentrations des oxydes d’azote mais ils peuvent faciliter l’oxydation du monoxide d’azote (NO) en dioxyde d’azote (NO2), plus toxique. Vale et CanmetMINING effectuent des recherches pour réduire l’exposition des travailleurs aux émissions de diesel en analysant les DOC des équipements miniers. The older coal chemist had a much simpler conception of coal than we have today. To him coal was a mineral composed essentially of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, ash, and water, in various proportions. His studies on the constitution of coal were directed along the conventional lines of proximate and ultimate chemical analyses and making deductions from these data without any real appreciation of the fact that coal is a conglomerate of various chemical compounds, including many of the most complex structures known to organic chemistry. The view of the modern coal chemist is well expressed by Franz Fischer,&apos; who says that while proximate and ultimate analyses are important both from the scientific and technical point of view, they tell the chemist no more concerning the number and kinds of chemical compounds that constitute coal than the reader would learn of the contents of a book if told that the printed contents consisted of 15 per cent. of the letter "e," 5 per cent. of the letter "n," 1 per cent. of the letter"g," 4 per cent. of the letter "b," etc. As the reader must have the grouping of letters into words and words into sentences, so the chemist must have the grouping of atoms into molecules and the proportion of each molecular compound in the coal aggregate before he acquires an adequate knowledge of the constitution of coal. Modern investigators2 are laying the foundation of a new chemistry of coal based on the biochemistry of plants and the chemical changes involved in processes of fermentation and decay. As

The SAG mill motor current is used to control throughput. This system stabilizes the circuit but does not actively optimize circuit performance. The system was implemented with the Comdale /C expert system package and has been on line since May 1992. The expert system has resulted in a net increase in tonnage of 7tph and a decrease in annual grinding media costs of $210,000. At the Buffalo meeting in October, 1898 (Trans., xxviii., 865), our Secretary, Dr. Raymond, in speaking of the obstacles he had encountered in securing contributions to the Transactions from members in practice, said : " It is the disinclination of many members to communicate incomplete or partial or preliminary results. They are going to write, &apos; some day,&apos; a thorough and monumental paper; and meanwhile they prefer to communicate nothing.... It is the difficulty to which I have just referred that I have encountered in a wide correspondence with members, undertaken for the purpose of securing contributions of fact and opinion concerning the special subject of this discussion.... Almost none of them seem to recognize the value of preliminary, incomplete and indecisive reports of practice, as laying the foundation for a thorough&apos; inquiry." This remark was made in immediate reference to a discussion concerning blast-furnace tuyeres; but, notwithstanding this appeal from the Secretary, little has been recorded regarding the distribution, the penetration, and the pressure of the blast at the tuyeres and inside the iron blast-furnace. I am therefore encouraged to contribute the following incomplete and crude observations of the blast-pressure inside the hearth. At the suggestion of J. H. Frantz, the general manager of the Columbus Iron & Steel Go., a test was made at the East furnace of the company to determine whether there was any difference in blast-pressure at the different tuyeres. The apparatus used for this test was not sensitive enough to give accurate results. It consisted of a small pressure-gauge mounted on a 3/8-in. gas-pipe. A hollow plug, fitting into the peep-hole of the tuyere-cap, prevented the blast from blowing-out during the test. The test-pipe was held in place by means of the handle on the outer end.

The FalTmT iron ore deposits are located in the so-called æBirrimianÆ volcano-sedimentary complex that extends in a general NE-SW direction across eastern Senegal and part of Mali and Guinea. The rocks underwent folding and greenschist facies metamorphism, as well as various events of granitoid emplacement. The deposits form part of the DialT-DalTma Series of the Birrimian Supergroup and were subjected to contact metamorphism. The Fe-mineralisation occurs as primary magnetite within the metamorphic aureole. Supergene oxidation (martitisation) of this mineralisation produced the hematite-rich iron deposits that can be seen as prominent hills across the plains of this south-eastern corner of Senegal. BRGM of France and Miferso (SociTtT des Mines de Fer du STnTgal-Oriental) have conducted several phases of prospecting since 1957. Their aim was to delineate the hematite deposits and to assess the grade, beneficiation characteristics and marketability of the iron ore. A feasibility study by Fluor Daniel was completed in 1992. Results indicated that, at the time, the resource could not compete in the international arena in terms of size and accessibility. The growing iron ore market and additional available resources in the area now challenge the 1992 feasibility study results and put the old kid back on the iron ore block. The project faces some mining challenges, such as the amount of magnetite in the hematite product that will be acceptable to the market. Previous project evaluations only considered the secondary hematite deposits as economically viable. It is therefore important to accurately delineate the magnetite/hematite contact zone to optimise the resource tonnage. Project logistic constraints also exist in terms of railway access and harbour facilities. The resource is, however, well situated for the European iron ore market and aims to find a place in the rapidly expanding iron ore seaborne trade.

"Concerns over possible additional involvement of governments in Canada&apos;s mining industry and its adverse effects on the industry &apos;s growth were a frequent topic of conversation at the recent Annual General Meeting of the CIM.Still painfully fresh in the minds of industry leaders are the disastrous results of the federal/provincial scramble over resource revenues which followed the relatively high metal prices witnessed in 1973/1974. At current metal prices, it is not surprising, then, that a nagging fear persists that these governments may once again restructure tax and other rules to the detriment of the industry and the country.This month, Tax Notes recalls some of the progress which the industry and governments have made in 1979 in the taxation of the resource sector, and urges that higher metal prices be viewed in light of the costly exploration, development and production efforts which will be required for the industry to continue to play its important role in our economy.IntroductionAt the Annual General Meeting of The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, held in April, 1980, it was abundantly clear that there is widespread concern in Canada&apos;s mining industry that this country&apos;s tax regime may once again be blasted by ill winds of change.A stable and more favourable tax climate, as well as higher metal prices and profits, made 1979 almost a golden year for Canadian mining. However, from the tax viewpoint at least, there are some spots on the silver lining as apprehensions grow that the well-heralded battle between federal and provincial governments over oil and gas may spread to the mining sector, with serious damage to the industry and its newfound federal-provincial cooperation."

"High alumina slag, with alumina normally more than 15 pct, is encountered with blast furnaces in China because of high alumina/silica ratio in iron ore as well as sinter and high ash content in coke for cost reason. High alumina slag with high viscosity and high liquidus temperature would lead to higher slag volume and thereby, furnace productivity. In the present work, liquidus temperature of high alumina slag, based on Meishan factory, Baosteel China, were investigated. A liquidus temperature model was introduced in the present work based on basic physical chemistry theory and focused on the chemical composition area used in Meishan factory(pct): Al2O3 from 14 to 17.5 and MgO from 8 to 12, so that the blast furnace slag could be designed for optimum blast furnace performance.IntroductionBlast furnace slag composition[1] has very important bearing on its physicochemical characteristics which affects smoothness of operation, slag handling, coke consumption, the degree of desulphurization, hot metal productivity and its quality etc. The slag properties which affect most are liquidus temperature, viscosity, sulphide capacity and alkali capacity. Variation of these slag characteristics with composition and temperature has been a field of active researches as these its great influence on the blast furnace operation. In the early years, most of these studies were carried out over low alumina blast furnace slags with alumina normally less than 15 pct. High alumina slag was first introduced in India because of its high alumina/silica ratio iron ore as well as sinter and high ash content in coke[2]. And then this problem becomes common as higher alumina/silica ratio iron ore imported and used [2-5]. The most important problem caused by high alumina content is liquidus temperature and then viscosity of the slag.Generally speaking those reported works [2-5] investigated a pretty wide range of chemical compositions and then obtained complex model, respectively. In fact, every factory has its own interest because of different resources. For example, the Al2O3 content from 20% to 30% pct was studied in Tata Steel India [2], but it is too high for Baosteel Meishan. A very lower percentage of alumina content, 14-18 % pct, was mainly used."

The insoluble-residue method for the examination and correlation of limestones and dolomites, or other sedimentary rocks containing calcium and magnesium carbonates, originated and was developed in the laboratory of the Missouri Geological Survey. The numerous and ever-increasing problems in the field of applied geology, and the need for a tool or aid in the solution of them, led to experimental work with samples collected from deep wells, in the early part of 1924. The success attained, almost at the outset, with this method was so great that the method has now been developed from the state of the experimental to the realm of large-scale, every-day routine. In a previous paper the writer1 described the procedure in detail and the characteristics of the residues obtained from certain Paleozoic formations in Missouri. The purpose of the present paper is to discuss the economic application of the insoluble-residue method. Developmental History Within the Ozark region of southern Missouri the geologic column consists of Lower Ordovician (Canadian of Ulrich) and Upper Cambrian formations, which are composed mainly of dolomite with subordinate amounts of sandstone, shale and limestone. Chert is found to some extent in all except one of the dolomite formations. The stratigraphy of the region is complex because the dolomites have lithologic similarities, fossils are few and often poorly preserved, and identifiable horizons within the comparatively thick formations are not common. Although considerable stratigraphic work of an areal nature had been done for a period of many years by the Missouri Geological Survey, the detailed geologic succession had not, until a few years ago, been systematically worked out. The problems of subsurface stratigraphy were even more complex. This region constitutes the main ground-water province of the State of Missouri and within it wells of varying depths are drilled in order to obtain supplies of ground water. One of the more obvious phenomena which relate to coke formation is that soft coals of low volatile matter content tend to yield hard or high strength cokes while hard coals of high volatile matter content tend to yield soft or low strength cokes. This observation led researchers of the Coal Research Bureau of West Virginia Univ. to study the possibility of using Hardgrove grindability as a supplemental rank indicator for coking properties. Grindability has been used for many years as a means to measure the resistance of coal to comminution but it has rarely if ever been considered for evaluating coals for carbonization. The coal proper- ties which are measured by grindability are complex, but recent work with the difficult-to-correlate high volatile coals has demonstrated that a 93% correlation exists between grindability and the total petrographic rnicrinites, exinites, and resinites. This work demonstrated that inherent ash had no apparent effect on the grindability of high volatile coals, suggesting that the coal substance is apparently harder than the associated ash. These observations, together with the patented Burstlein process," indicate that the distribution of hard and soft components in the individual high volatile coals and blends of coals may be quantitatively interrelated to coke stability through selected ranges of coal volatile matter. The objective of this progress report is 1) to demonstrate the statistical relationships which exist between coal grindability and the numerous coal petrographic entities and 2) to present the results of initial studies concerning the correlation of the coke physical strength index of stability with coal volatile matter and grindability.

The White Mesa uranium/vanadium mill is six miles south of Blanding, UT, on the Colorado Plateau, which has historically spawned more than 200 uranium mines. As uranium prices approached an all-time high during the mill planning period, Energy Fuels Nuclear Inc. anticipated the reopening of many of these mines, whose low grade ore suddenly looked economic. The company located the White Mesa mill close to these mines, to minimize hauling distances to the mill and give vendors added incentive to reopen or expand mine operations. A receptive local community, a relatively unencumbered trip through the regulatory maze, and some mill circuit innovations all helped to make the White Mesa mill a well functioning reality. From a strategic standpoint, and to begin ore stockpiling as early as possible, Energy Fuels constructed two ore buying stations and began receiving ore in early 1977. The buying stations were located at Hanksville and at what is now the Blanding mill site. Ore receipts at Hanksville did not materialize as anticipated and the facility has since been closed. The Blanding ore buying station is now an integral part of the milling operation. All ores, whether company, vendor, or for toll milling, are received at the Blanding station. The Blanding site was central to the plateau mines, and was well received by area residents, who encouraged the introduction of industry to the area. Residents viewed mill construc¬tion as an economic blessing and were prepared to accept the associated im¬pacts. Energy Fuels hired as many local people as possible for mill opera¬tions.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the main reactions of coal gasification by steam. Coal (minus 70 mesh)-water slurry was fed into a laboratory-scale tube-coil gasifier to show the effects of residence time (0.6 to 1.1 sec), steam-coal ratio (2 to 11 lb/lb), and temperature (1,600° to 1,900° F), at about 1-1/2 atm. Devolatilization was very rapid: about 70 pet of the coal&apos;s volatile matter evolved within 0.6 sec at about 1,600° F; temperature increase released more volatile matter until about 95 pct was driven off at 1,900° F. Devolatilization was not increased by raising steam concentrations and was only slightly increased by extending residence time. Below 1,600° F, there was no evidence of the steam-carbon reaction, but at 1,900° F more than 80 pct of the coal&apos;s fixed carbon was converted to gas; the conversion was increased Significantly by increased residence time and steam concentration. The water-gas shift reaction occurred simultaneously with devolatilization, and the steam-carbon reaction, approaching equilibrium with increased residence time and temperature and decreased steam concentration.

The anorthosite complexes and related rock types of the Indian Precambrian shield are primarily associated with either cratons or mobile belts. They were metamorphosed under amphibolite to granulite facies conditions. The major rock types are chromite-bearing meta-anorthosites, amphibolites, basic granulites, pink granites and gneisses. This study was carried out on chromitite bearing samples from Sittampundi Anorthosite Complex (SAC), Tamil Nadu, to evaluate the nature and textural settings of platinum-group minerals (PGM), using state-of-the-art technology. The structure and petrology of SAC were well studied by earlier workers (Subramanian, 1956), but only scanty data on geochemical, petrology and mineralogy of PGM are available. The mineralogy of the samples is dominated by chromite (&gt;70 mass per cent), plagioclase (An90) and chlorite-actinolite with orthopyroxene (En85). Details of the petrological evolution of the Sittampundi complex will still have to be studied further, but indications of magma replenishment at the level of chromite formation and the elevated PGE values associated with the chromitite samples make the Sittampundi complex a promising target for future exploration activity.

THE elastic, earthwaves produced naturally by earthquakes -have been used for a long time as evidence from which to draw conclusions in re-gard to the constitution of the interior and crust of the earth. The elastic earthwaves produced artificially by occasional explosions and recorded by seismological observatories were used to draw conclusions regarding the-geology of the intervening area. Intentionally pro-duced elastic earthwaves in the past five years have come to be used extensively in the investigation of very local geologic structure. The seismic method of work-ing geologic structure, which makes use of artificially controlled explosions and the resulting earthwaves, has developed almost `clairvoyant power in handling certain geologic situations, and in the discovery of salt domes in the Gulf Coastal: Plain region of Texas and Louisiana has &apos;scored the, most brilliant success. The. first, proposal for the use of artificial earth-quakes in the study-of velocity of elastic earthwaves in the surface formations of the earth&apos;s crust was made before 1888 by the English seismologists, Mallet and Abbot. Partly on the basis of their work, A. Schmidt in 1888 proposed- the use of the time-distance graphs of artificial earthquakes to study the variation of ve-locity with depth. Belar in 1902 proposed the practical application of such investigation in connection with boring tunnels. Galitzen repeatedly (1912, 1913) pro-posed the use of explosions to study the velocity of the longitudinal and transverse waves in the uppermost formations and pointed out that the velocity depended in a high degree on the physical character of the beds and that from changes in the velocity, conclusions could be drawn in regard to the compositions of the beds. Somewhat the same thought: was proposed by von dem Borne (1908), by Benndorf, Udden, and others.

Introduction This section of the text presents a general review of the different types of concentrate marketing contracts. Too often the marketing strategy is ignored in the design phase of the project and the producer is left to the mercy of the buyer. Many items such as concentrate grade, impurity levels and moisture content of the concentrate my enhance, or severely restrict the producers ability to make a profit it. Close attention should be paid to the design of the concentrator which can improve the quality of the concentrates, thus the ability to increase the rider of potential buyers can be enhanced. Difficult at best, is the position of the miner who only has one outlet available for its production. Obviously, the trade offs must be evaluated. For example, concentrate grade vs recovery and grind/filtering capacity vs moisture of the concentrate all must be weighted against freight cost to a potential buyer. In addition, the above considerations must be weighed against the capital cost to the miner. This chapter is intended to highlight important articles that are included in short and long term agreements and to give a new miner/producer some insight into hat my or my not add value to the product. Unless the miner sells the product directly to a consumer such as a gold, or silver producer, or to a large enough operation that has a totally intergrated system to make a finished product, most miners are forced to sell to buyers who ultimately will refine and market the product. Types of Contract Agreements There are many types of contract agreements just as there are colors in the rainbow, however, most contracts fall into three basic categories. (1) Smelter Schedules: Designed for the small producer, the odd lot of concentrate, smelter flux and precious metal ore. Albeit custom smelters are becoming fever by the day, because of pollution control requirements and financial difficulties, most remaining custom smelters have a smelter schedule. A smelter schedule is a posted list of charges and conditions that the smelter will buy material from a seller. Smelter schedules exist for copper, lead, zinc, silver and gold (Handbook for Small Mining Enterprises, Montana Bureau of Mines). (2) Short Term Custom Contracts: Large mine producers frequently use Short Term Contracts where the seller has the buyer frame a contract that is tailored to the sellers’ production. In the manganese ferroalloys industry, there is increasing focus on the performance of different carbonaceous materials within the smelting processes. With a developing scarcity of traditional raw materials, new carbon sources are being identified for potential use in the processes. For this purpose, it is important to be able to predict the suitability of different materials in the process. Hence, the effects of both the physical and chemical properties of the carbon material on the reduction kinetics of manganese and silicon from slag to metal, have been investigated using an advanced sessile drop technique. Using this technique, the reaction patterns of SiO2-MnO containing slag droplets in contact with various solid carbon materials (graphites with different properties as well as cokes and charcoals) at 1400 to 1600\\176;C were studied in-situ. In addition, slag and metal reaction products from kinetic experimental series were analysed. From these results, differences in reactivity between various carbon materials and slags were demonstrated and explained. Mechanisms for both manganese and silicon reduction were proposed.

Gentlemen, the title of my paper is Surface Mining An Interim Land Use. Surface mining has become one of the major controversies of our time. This has happened in spite of the fact that all surface mining to date has involved only 6 million acres out of a total of 2300 million or approximately one-fourth of one percent of the total land area in the United States. I&apos;m not going to dwell on whether peoples&apos; perspectives are out of focus in light of the area involved, the energy crisis, national security, or the international balance of payments problem. While these things are all critically important, it is not the function of this paper to relate to them. Maybe the amount of attention attracted to surface mining is out of proportion to a lot of other things, but I don&apos;t feel that we should use that as a basis for procrastination. However, let me categorically state that anything that affects the surface of the earth is a form of land use --- be it an interstate highway, a power plant site, a golf course, a corn field, a strip mine, or the plot of ground on which your house is located.

Finely ground beryl was decomposed by mixing with ground limestone and soda ash andheating at 900¦C for,4-6, hours.The sintered material was then crushed and leached by boiling under reflux with 5N sulphuric acid for up to 4 hours. The liquor containing Be, ; Al, . Fe and, other elements as sulphates, was separated from the residue which consisted mainly of silica and gypsum, either&apos; by filtration or by decantation washing.The clarified leach liquor.was first treated to remove Fed}: , by contacting with a primary amine-kerosene solution in2 counter-current stages. The iron free liquor wa,s then passed to a 4-stage counter-current extraction unit where it was con-tacted with 0.5M di-(2 ethyl hexyl), phosphoric acid (EHPA) in kerosene. The&apos;operating conditions were such that at least 99 p&apos;br cent of the Be and only 7&apos; per&apos; cent of the Al- was, extracted The ,B6`= and. Al were ;stripped from the organic phase by sod-ium hydroxide solution of suitable concentration to form soluble "beryllate" and "aluminate" respectively. Most of the Be was subsequently precipTitated a&apos;s Bo(OH)2 by-hoating the alkaline solution to 90C, the Al remaining in solution. After filtra-tion and washing, the Bo(OH)2 could be ignited directly to BeO at about 1000 C or used as a feed to further purification stages aimed at producing "nuclear grade" BeO.A small coaAter-current extraction unit was operated con-tinuously using liquor derived from the sintering and leaching stages. Data obtained in batch laboratory tests were confirmed. A product obtained by ignition of the washed "beryllate" precip-itate contained more than&apos;99 per cent BeO.

I HAVE read ill the Bulletin (May, &apos;1914) a paper by H. von Höfer relating to the Origin of Petroleum, in which the author supports his and Engler&apos;s views, expressed before, of the organic origin of petroleum. Von Höfer pronounces strongly against the hypothesis of the volcanic origin of hydrocarbons, as particularly advocated by Eugene Coste. In Mr. Coste&apos;s articles, so well known by the public, he refers incidentally to our Mexican oil occurrences, especially of the Gulf coast, as proofs of the volcanic origin of the oils. This belief comes from the fact that, in our Mexican oil fields of the east coast, the majority of the producing wells are located near volcanic necks (remnants of small volcanoes, mainly of the explosive type), or near certain gibbosities in shales, resembling mounds, some of which&apos; are really uplifts due to volcanic forces or to abortive eruptions. The first attempt to explain the oil coming up around volcanic necks in Mexico, was made by me in a small article1 published in 1905, soon after the investigation ordered by the Mexican government as to the outlook of the Mexican Gulf coast as a future oil producer. When E. L. Doheny of Los Angeles, Cal., and I located the first producing well of Mexico, I was also the first to predict the great future of the oil industry in Mexico, just at the time when the government and some Mexican geologists felt rather pessimistic. The Mexican investors and the general public, as a result of these discouragements, did not pay attention to this important source of common wealth until recent days. The realization of the value of this source of wealth has been so sudden that we are menaced by the consequences brought about by a great boom. It was quite impossible, about five years ago, to induce Mexican capitalists to invest money in oil lands. So the few large foreign companies operating since the beginning, easily secured large holdings, in spite of the trouble frequently resulting from faulty titles or ownership.
