The 68th Regular Meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute convened in Manor Vail Lodge, Vail, Colorado, and was in session at 10:00 a.m. The meeting was called to order by Past President Max A. Robb, Vice President and General Manager, U.S. Fuel Company, Hiawatha, Utah. Mr. Robb welcomed the members and guests and was pleased with the large attendance. He then introduced President Joseph E. Ward, former District Man- ager, Denver Office, Coal Division, Joy Manufacturing Co. (Retired). A brief biography follows: Mr. Ward is a transplanted Westerner, having spent the greater part of his life in the Eastern and Southern areas of this country. In 1927, he graduated from what was then the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pa., with a B.S. degree in Mining Engineering. He dropped out of school for a period between his Junior and Senior years and worked in the coal mines in order to obtain sufficient money to complete his education. Practically all his adult life since graduation, has been spent in or around the coal mines in this country. After graduation, he worked the next 15 years of his life as an underground supervisor, first for the Hudson Coal Co., in Scranton, Pa. and later for the U.S. Steel Corporation in Birmingham, Alabama. He then went into sales, selling basically to the coal mine industry and other mining operations. The last 13 years of his business career were spent as a district manager for Joy Manufacturing CO., 10 years of which were in the Coal Division of their Denver office, covering the Rocky Mountain area. He retired in August 1970 but still retains an active interest in the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute and the Rocky Mountain Coal Industry it supports. He is a widower, his wife, Thelma having died in July 1970. He has two children and six grandchildren.

"This paper deals with the history, development, present and future of the Employee Assistance Programs in place at the Inco Ltd. operations in Thompson, Manitoba. It should be noted that, although many similar programs exist in various industries and jurisdictions, these programs had to be fine-tuned to meet the needs of Inco employees, having in mind the helping professional resources available in Thompson and its geographic location. IntroductionIn the late 70s, many Canadian industries and the Canadian Labour Congress and their affiliates commenced discussions on the value of the Employee Assistance Program (E .A.P.) philosophy to both management and labour.In the contract signed between Inco Ltd., Manitoba Division and Local 6166, U.S.W .A. in 1981, a commitment was made to establish a joint E.A.P. for the hourly workforce in Thompson, Manitoba. With this background and sequence of events in mind, it is appropriate to explain the methodology and the steps that were taken for the implementation of the hourly program. Development of Hourly ProgramIt was agreed by the company and the union that the committee to develop the program should consist of equal numbers from both sides: three active union members plus an advisor representing the Union and three supervisory personnel plus an advisor representing the Company; in addition, a person familiar with E.A.P.s from the Alcoholism Foundation of Manitoba was to act as a facilitator. The Union appointed a social worker who was working as a counsellor for union members as their advisor , and the company appointed a staff employee who had worked voluntarily in the field of alcohol and drug abuse for many years. The makeup of the committee was extremely important in order to give credibility to the entire process. The makeup of the committee is shown in Table 1.The facilitator selected from the Alcoholism Foundation of Manitoba was well known in the community and highly respected in his profession."

Previous investigations have shown that the cold rolling textures1n2 and the drawn wire textures3 of copper change their secondary components after the addition of about 1 pct aluminum and 5 pct zinc, but do not change after the addition of as much as 30 pct nickel. However, few data are available on compression textures. Barrett4 reports from unpublished work with E. L. Layland that compression rolled copper develops a texture which is predominately (110) in the compression plane with a secondary spread to (113) and weaker spread to (100) as shown in Fig 1. However, 70-30 alpha brass similarly treated develops a texture again predominately (110) in the compression plane and with a weak secondary spread to {113} but with moderate (111) secondary intensities illustrated in Fig 2. Experimental Procedure Specimens of the compositions shown in Table 1 remaining from a previous investigation3 were annealed to a grain size of 0.090 mm average diam and machined to cylinders 0.20 in. diam and 0.20 in. high. Cylinders were compressed 90 pct reduction in height between lubricated steel blocks in a tensile machine. Glancing X ray photo-grams using copper K-alpha radiation were taken at an angle of 0 degrees to the compression surface. (111), (002) and (220) rings were analyzed to define the textures shown in Table 1. The results are in agreement with Barrett4 as to types of textures and are essentially in agreement with previous work1,2,3 as to the effects of composition. In the wire study3 it was reported that the 4.99 pct zinc alloy had a brass-type texture, while the data in Table 1 indicate a copper-type texture for compression. The wire specimen of the 4.99 pct zinc alloy was re-examined by X rays and it was established that the [loo] component still exists in the wire axis. Therefore, Table 2 of Ref. 3 is in error and should indicate a double [ill], [loo] copper-type texture for this alloy. This correction results in complete consistency with regard to compositional effects, namely that copper and its alloys containing up to approximately 1 pet aluminum, 5 pct zinc and at least 30 pct nickels develop a copper-type texture and more concentrated copper-aluminum and copper-zinc solid solution alloys will form a brass-type texture. Summary Compression textures developed in copper and its alpha solid solution alloys of aluminum, nickel and zinc are essentially the same types as those re- ported by Barrett4 with compositional effects occurring at approximately the same percent additions as previously reported for rolled sheet182 and drawn wire.3 The Scovill Manufacturing Co., Waterbury, Conn., furnished the copper and brass alloys, performed certain chemical analyses and supplied laboratory facilities where needed. PURPOSE: Evaluate practical technological advances in hearing protective devices for use in different mining environments. RESEARCH SUMMARY: Previous NIOSH research shows that miners develop hearing loss much more quickly than nonoccupationally noise-exposed individuals. Also, miners experience a greater severity of hearing loss than would be expected for nonoccupational noise-exposed persons of the same age and sex. As described in the National Occupational Research Agenda, problems created by occupational hearing loss include (1) the reduced quality of life due to social isolation and unrelenting tinnitus, (2) impaired communication with family members, the public, and coworkers,(3) a diminished ability to monitor the work environment (e.g., warning signals, equipment sounds, etc.), (4) lost productivity and increased accidents resulting from impaired communication and isolation, and (5) expenses for workers? compensation and hearing aids.

The milling plant of the Alaska-Gastineau Mining Co. is located at the town of Thane, Alaska, on Gastineau Channel, 4 mi. south of Juneau and directly across the channel from the Ready Bullion mine of the Treadwell mines on Douglas Island. Previous to the organization of the Alaska-Gastineau Mining Co., in 1912, the milling was done at the stamp mill of the Alaska Perseverance Co. located at the mine in Silver Bow Basin. But the contemplated increase in production made it necessary to locate the mill on Gastineau Channel, as not enough water was available at the mine during the winter months, nor was there room for taking care of the large tonnage of tailings that would ultimately be discarded from the mill. Character of Ore The gold and silver values occur in quartz lenses associated with pyrrhotite, galena, arsenical pyrites, and zinc blende. These lenses occur in large bodies of slate, schist, and metagabbro, which also carry some valuable metallic contents. With the essential low cost of mining, it was necessary to mine large bodies of low-grade material containing the high-grade streaks. Of the minerals, pyrrhotite, the magnetic sulfide of iron, is predominant, and galena is the next sulfide present in quantity. The gold occurs free and coarse and associated with the iron sulfide in its finer state. The silver occurs with the lead or is alloyed with the gold. A chemical analysis of the ore shows Silver............ 0.10 oz. Magnesia......... 0.4 per cent. Silica............. 59.7percent. Sulfur............ 1.2 per cent. Iron.............. 5.2 per cent. Lead............. 0.1 per cent. Alumina.......... 21.4percent. Zinc............. 0.2percent.. Lime............. 5.0 per cent. Recently research efforts have been made to obtain a high-purity gibbsite concentrate, suitable for first-class alumina refractories, from a Brazilian bauxite ore containing gibbsite (50%), quartz (35%),and kaolinite (15%). Detailed polished-section microprobe analysis was used to describe the liberation characteristics of the ore. Experimental results suggest that the kaolinite liberation characteristics can be described by King's liberation model and that only about 11% of the kaolinite is expected to be liberated at a particle size of 75 µ. Bench-scale experiments for the flotation of gibbsite/kaolinite from quartz using alkyl sulfates as collectors were particularly successful at pH 2, and under appropriate conditions a concentrate containing 93.0% A1 0 (calcined basis) was obtained 2 3 at a gibbsite recovery of about 96%. Subsequently, the more difficult separation of kaolinite from gibbsite was accomplished by kaolinite flotation from the alumina concentrate with a quaternary ammonium salt at pH 6 to produce a high-purity gibbsite product, 97.4% A12O3 (calcined basis), at an overall gibbsite recovery from the bauxite flotation feed of about 90%.

To a bank that granted his request for a loan, the late American humorist Robert Benchley responded, `I don't trust a bank that would lend money to such a poor risk'. This quotation is unlikely to be the norm among mining companies that secure project financing. However, a poor appreciation of one of the key risks of a mining project, the reserves, often results in disastrous financial consequences. This conclusion is the subject of the discussion and analyses presented in this paper.

The investigation results are submitted on separation into layers in the systems Cu (Ni) - Fe - Ca - 0 - S - (Si), as well as on physico-chemical properties of oxide - ferrite, oxide-sulfide melts (density, surface tention, viscosity, electric conductivity), on kinetics and oxidation macromechanism of iron and sulfur in the oxide-silicate, oxide-ferrite and oxide-sulfide melts, kinetics of reduction of oxide-silicate and oxide-ferrite systems. Conditions are discussed for copper, nickel and zinc recovery from oxide-silicate and oxide-ferrite slag in liquid and solid states. Some promising technique is the technique of future, as is considered.

The Bellambi Coal Company Limited com menced longwall mining at South Bulli Colliery in 1965. At present it operates three long- wall units in two seams. Although results to date have been less successful than planned, it is apparent that this type of mining has tremendous potential in the particular conditions at South Bulli. Massive sandstone strata above the Bulli seam is the controlling influence on face conditions. The earliest equipment proved to be inadequate and the Company has progress- ively replaced and upgraded the roof supports and ancillary equipment so that the present units are capable of producing high and consistent outputs.

CONSIDERING the really short time that has elapsed since hydro-metallurgical processes of extracting copper from ores have been extensively developed, and the large scale on which this method is practised at Ajo, the successful operation of the plant must excite the admiration of every visitor. The application of the mechanical unloader to the purpose for which it is employed at Ajo is but an extension of the use for which it was originally designed, some 20 years ago, for unloading iron-ore vessels at the lower lake ports. At a time when the maximum output of a single machine, with men shoveling the ore into buckets, did not exceed 40 tons per hour, G. H. Hulett invented and constructed a mechanical unloader with a bucket of 10-ton capacity. This machine was of the steam hydraulic type, and it is still in operation after nearly 20 years of service. Several more machines of the same type were built, but the difficulties of power transmission, and the rapid development of electrical machinery, soon led to the adoption of electrically operated machines, and practically all of the later installations have been thus equipped. This electrically operated unloader has proved so well fitted for the work that the design of the lake boats has been practically revolutionized, with special view to the ease and rapidity of unloading. It is now possible to unload a 12,000-ton vessel with four machines in a little over 2 hr. This has necessitated an increase in the capacity of the machine, and the largest yet built handles an average load of 17 tons, with a possible maximum of 20 to 21 tons.

THE first record of the discovery of iron ore in Missouri was Marquette's observation in 1673 of brown iron ore, or limonite, in the Mississippi River bluffs just north of the mouth of Apple Creek in southeastern Perry County. There is no record of any attempt to mine or smelt Missouri iron ores until 1815, when the Ashebran furnace was erected at the Stouts Creek shut-in near Arcadia, Iron County. Some limonite was treated in this furnace, the first iron furnace west of Ohio, but most of the ore was hematite from Shepherd Mountain and adjacent deposits. Eight years later, in 1823, the Perry furnace five miles north of Caledonia, Washington County, was constructed to smelt limonite ore. It was not until 1890 to 1900, however, that these ores attracted considerable attention. Nearly 300,000 tons had been produced by 1911, and this production had come from 24 counties in the Ozark region. For the next two decades, until 1931, essentially all activities ceased. During the depression years of the thirties when employment was low many people turned to the brown ores for subsistence; consequently production was increased. World War II produced another stimulus to the industry. The availability of risk capital in the past three years has revived interest in these deposits, although no appreciable increase in production has resulted.

THE Wisconsin zinc district, also known as the Upper Mississippi lead and zinc district, is an area of about 2500 sq. mi. in the southwestern portion of Wisconsin and adjacent parts of Illinois and Iowa. It includes Iowa, Grant and Lafayette counties in Wisconsin, Jo Davies County in Illinois, and an irregular strip of Clayton and Dubuque counties in Iowa, parallel to the Mississippi River. During periods of high metal prices mining has been quite active in this district, but recently the lower metal prices have caused many companies to suspend, so that at the present time there are only a small number of mines operating. The short life of these mines and the low mineral content of the zinc deposits limit the investment in development and equipment, and necessitates the operation of this equipment at maximum running time and maximum capacity. The tonnage of rock handled (locally termed dirt) is large in comparison with the tonnage of concentrate produced. Moreover, the zinc content of the concentrate is low, varying from 25 to 40 per cent zinc, and the value per ton is correspondingly low. The life of the mines varies greatly. An exception-ally good deposit may produce 2,000,000 tons of rock during a period of ten years, market value permitting, from which will be obtained 100,000 to 150,000 tons of concentrate. One property which might be con-sidered as fulfilling the requirements of a profitable operation was developed and equipped in 1925, oper-ated continuously for a period of two and a half years, produced 484,292 tons of rock, from which was obtained 37,659 tons of zinc concentrate, 34.4 per cent Zn, and 1155 tons of lead concentrate, 67 per cent Pb. During the war period prices of ore permitted the mining of lower grade ores than has been possible in the past few years. The maintaining of a higher grade mill-feed has resulted in reducing the size of stopes formerly carried in the old mines and confining the workings within narrower limits.

When looking for indicators for the mining business ? and these days who isn?t? ? one might need to look no further than the SME Annual Meeting. Held in Phoenix, AZ Feb. 28 to March 3, the meeting was, by almost any measure, a record-breaking success. Attendance included 4,937 industry professionals. Many of whom, feeling rejuvenated following the worst economic recession since the great depression, were greeted with a record 630 exhibits and 103 technical sessions covering all aspects of the mining and minerals business. Adding to the general optimism of the future was a celebration of the past and re-cent achievements in safety and health. The theme of this year?s meeting was ?Celebrating 100 Years of Mining Research? and the emphasis on advancements in safety was evident from the keynote address that kicked off the conference, to the field trips, to the Resolution and Safford mines that concluded the meeting.

Desulfurization experiments at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Bartlesville on virgin light distillates obtained from some ‘high-sulfur’ crude oils have shown that the octane numbers of the original distillates are increased on the average about one unit, that the octane numbers of distillates with 4 ml. tetraethyl lead are increased 2 to 3 units, and that the The Petroleum Experiment Station, at the request of the Petroleum Administration for War, instigated and has in progress an investigation of crude oils of the United States to determine their possibilities for yielding straight-run distillates suitable for use as base or blending stocks to produce high octane aviation gasoline. One phase of this investigation deals primarily with so-called ‘high-sulfur’ or ‘sour’ crude oils by seeking to determine the effects of sulfur removal upon the virgin distillates prepared from these crude oils. To date, virgin distillates from several ‘high-sulfur’ crude oils from Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma have been prepared and desulfurized in pilot-plant distillation and desulfurization units at the Petroleum Experiment Station. The properties of the undesulfurized and desulfurized distillates were determined and compared to show the effect of sulfur removal. Results of these investigations showing the suitability of these crude oils as sources of virgin naphtha aviation base stocks have been prepared and forwarded to the Petroleum Administration for War and other approved persons. The following preliminary summary is presented to acquaint those interested not only with the present results of the investigation of several ‘high-sulfur’ Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma crude oils, but also to give some basic information as to certain sulfur compounds, especially their identification in straight-run distillates, their depressing effects upon the octane numbers of leaded fuels, the benefits obtained by their partial and complete removal, and some of the processes being used to effect their removal.

Over the past two decades, there have been significant reductions in industrial exposures to hand-arm vibration, especially when specific tools and work processes have been redesigned to incorporate anti-vibration and ergonomic principles. Nevertheless, Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) remains a significant occupational health problem as disease symptoms continue to occur even when vibration exposure levels believed to incur low risks have been reached2. This inconsistency may be related to the methodology that is typically used to estimate workday vibration exposure levels, involving laboratory and/or very short duration field measurements coupled with estimates of overall eight-hour tool operation times determined from brief observations of tool tasks and/or self-reported surveys. One solution is to use small, commercially-available, personal vibration dosimeters to calculate, record, and display long-duration vector sums and energy equivalents of vibration. However, since these devices are attached to the worker and require tool-mounted accelerometers, they are incompatible with the worker performing normal duties involving putting down or changing tools. In addition, these commercial systems do not allow for the characterization of the transmission of vibration to the hand such as monitoring the mechanical coupling between the hand and the tool handle (e.g., grip forces). O’Boyle and Griffin showed that variations in applied force can alter vibration transmission characteristics by 50% or more indicating that the measurement of grip force is essential for modeling vibration transmissibility and vibration exposures5. In summary, a need exists for the development of a method and device that will more accurately characterize workday-long vibration exposures. Methods A portable, light-weight, Vibration Exposure Monitor (VEM) system was developed to record user-specific tool-operating times, vibrations, and grip forces throughout all, or a representative part, of a workday. It monitors frequency weighted and unweighted accelerations from a palm-mounted uni-axial accelerometer (Model 352C22, PCB Piezotronics, Depew, NY) and calculates exposure levels using the root-mean-square (RMS) and higher power mean values, such as the root-mean-quad (RMQ) and the root-mean-oct (RMO). Grip forces are also monitored using a palm-mounted force sensor (Model 400, Interlink Electronics, Camarillo, CA) from which average grip force levels and exerted grip extrema are calculated. At the core of the VEM system is a commercially available, battery-powered microcomputer (Tattletale, Model 8v2, Onset Computer, Onset, MA) with one megabyte of memory and eight analog channels using 12-bit sampling at a single-channel maximum of 100 kHz. Analog signal processing (i.e., anti-aliasing, with cutoffs at 4 and 1250 Hz, and ISO 5349-13 frequency weighting) is accomplished using custom circuitry that is directly interfaced with the microcomputer. I need not say how much I appreciate the honor of being asked to lecture to you, and how much I would thank you for your kind invitation. It is encouraging to feel that the abnormal restrictions of the war have been relaxed sufficiently to allow a free exchange of scientists between our two countries, and I hope that some of you will be persuaded to go to England, and to visit us at Oxford, so that I may repay a little of the kindness I have received from you. As this is one of the first lectures since the end of the war, I have thought it well to describe some of the advances in the theory of alloys which were made in the years between the two World Wars. From the point of view of theoretical science, these years have been of outstanding interest in the history of metallurgy. They have been years in which the development of new and more accurate experimental methods has led to the revelation of many new facts. At the same time, the theoretical developments have enabled some of these facts to be viewed as parts of a general scheme, and we may say that some of the foundations of metallurgical science have been laid. This work was naturally stopped by the Second World War, and it can therefore be reviewed as one definite stage in the development of our Science. To illustrate the new advances, I shall deal mainly with the alloys of copper and silver, since these have revealed many of the general principles. taken, and copper had been found to crystallize in the face-centered cubic structure (Fig I). The determination of this structure naturally was of immense importance in the understanding of our subject, because it meant that we were at last in a position to appreciate the underlying structure out of which the crystal of copper was built. The earlier science of metallography had shown that in many alloys of copper the addition of a second metal in not too large proportions resulted in the formation of a homogeneous alloy which was regarded as a solid solution of the one metal in copper. Fig 2, for example, shows the so-called equilibrium diagram of the copper-zinc alloys, and here you will see that there is a solid solution of zinc in copper extending to something of the order 35 to 40 at. pct zinc.

BEFORE presenting the main topic, as indicated by the title, this paper will give some of the high-spot history of the anthracite industry. INTRODUCTION The earliest recorded use of anthracite was in the year 1762, when a company of Connecticut pioneers discovered anthracite near the present city of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. In the early days of the industry, the coal was used only in large pieces, the smaller pieces being discarded to waste piles. As the output of the industry increased during the nineteenth century, uses were developed for somewhat smaller sizes down to and including pea coal. Early in the twentieth century, sizes smaller than pea, such as No. I and No. 2 buckwheat, were developed and used. Accu¬mulations of piles from current mining operations were still increasing; that is, the smaller sizes were still being discarded. It was not until after World War I that preparation of the so-called steam sizes began commercially. This was largely No. 3 buckwheat, which is screened through a 3f 6-in. round-hole screen and over a 332-in. or a M 6-in. round-hole screen. USE OF SMALLER SIZES The earliest recorded experience in burning the small sizes of anthracite for steam production, other than in a previous small experiment, was in the year 1913, when a size known as "boiler fuel" was introduced-a mixture of rice and barley (No. 2 and No. 3 buckwheat). At that time, there was still no method known for burning the still smaller sizes. TABLE I.-Screen Sizes Used for Small Sizes of Anthracite [ ] At the present time, various sizes down to and including No. 5 buckwheat are being prepared (Table I) from current mining and bank-reclaiming operations. The sizes of No. 4 and No. 5 buckwheat and smaller are generally being used for steam production in large boilers. The Pennsylvania Power and Light Co., following World War I, used 680,000 tons of anthracite per year, burned largely on stokers for production of steam, whereas for the year 1943 it used 1,940,000 tons of stoker sizes and 400,000 tons of smaller sizes for grinding and burning in pulverized form. This company has taken a very large part in the research and development of ways and means of burning these smaller sizes of anthracite, including the grinding of the very small sizes. This paper is particularly concerned with the latter feature.

Fig 2, for example, shows the so-called equilibrium diagram of the copper-zinc alloys, and here you will see that there is a solid solution of zinc in copper extending to something of the order 35 to 40 at. pct zinc.

Stability diagrams for the Cu-S-H2O system have been widely applied over many years. Stability diagrams for aqueous systems generally, have been generated by computer, but with the programs for Potential-pH diagrams in particular, a common routine leads to error in multi-element systems. In this paper these errors, and some misinterpretation of diagrams are considered. In most of the published diagrams for the Cu-S-H2O system there has been no account of the sulfide complexes of copper. Here, the free energies of formation for the various species in the system have been re-evaluated for consistency, and some diagrams for the Cu-S-H2O system ( generated with the program DIASTAB Vers.5 ) are presented.

"This paper has reference in a general way to the region extending from the north shore of lake Buron to the northern limit of the elliptical-shaped area generally known as the Sudbury Basin, and more especially to the district lying south of the Basin (Fig. 3). Attention is concentrated mainly on the structure of the district and, as space does not permit of much geological description, it is assumed that the reader has some knowledge of the general geology. The accompanying table outlines the sequence of the rock formations according to the most recent available information; for further details the interested reader may consult the publications of the various authors mentioned in the paper.STRUCTURE OF THE SEDIMENTARY ROCKS SOUTH OF THE SUDBURY IRRUPTIVEThe rocks south of the Sudbury irruptive, excluding certain intrusives, are, in order from north to south:(1) A band of basic lavas.(2) A band of well-bedded greywackes and quartzites, long termed the McKim greywacke.(3) The Copper Cliff formation, with McKim greywacke' both to the north and south.(4) The Ramsay Lake conglomerate.(5) A thick quartzite formation.All these rocks strike approximately east-northeast, dip steeply south, and generally face south, though there are local exceptions."
