Activated carbon particles obtained from a number of Australian CIP operations were examined with an optical and a scanning electron micro- scope and an electron microprobe. External surfaces, and polished sec- tions through individual particles, were examined with special reference to materials on the surface and to calcium and gold distributions. Photographs are presented of surface contamination of the particles by salts precipitated from the pulp such as calcium carbonate (calcite), calcium sulphate (gypsum), and a magnesium salt; ore minerals such as quartz, hematite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, pentlandite, and various alumino- silicates; and other substances such as grinding media and a fungus. Calcite was very abundant but the other materials were less common. Contamination in the interior of carbon particles was almost exclu- sively calcium carbonate, and extensive contamination extended to the centre of some particles. A possible mechanism for the formation of cal- cium carbonate inside the carbon particles is noted. Gold X-ray dot maps of sections through carbon particles indicated that gold was distributed throughout coconut shell carbons and that although gold was more concentrated near the outer surfaces of extruded peat carbon particles, it was also present to depths of at least 500 ¦m. THE new low-alloy high-strength steels are obviously here to stay. With 75 per cent higher yield strength and 50 per cent higher tensile strength than plain carbon structural steel, they permit 20 to 40 per cent weight savings and 10 per cent or more increase in pay load in the con-struction of railroad cars, buses, trucks, and a great variety of material-handling equipment. Their cost is low enough so that the extra cost of the new lighter construction over that with carbon steel offers an attrac-tive self-liquidating investment; in some instances new construction with these low-alloy steels may even be as cheap as with plain carbon steel. A considerable and rapidly growing demand for the low-alloy steels has already sprung up. The many steel compositions that have appeared on the market lately 18,27,28,29,30 to meet this demand would seem to indicate that no single composition is uniquely fitted for the purpose. However, no doubt some compositions are more suitable than others. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to compare the effects of the various alloying elements that might be used in the low-alloy steels in order to choose the metallurgically most logical composition, paying due regard, of course, to the economic aspects involved.

INTRODUCTION The Washington Camp - Duquesne mining district is located on the east flank of the Patagonia Mountains, 98 kilometers south of Tucson and within 5 kilometers of the International border (Figure 1). Since the development of high-grade silver and copper ores by settlers in 1862, the Washington Camp - Duquesne district has yielded an estimated 450,000 metric tons of ore. The mined ores averaged 8% zinc, 2% copper, 3% lead and 124 grams of silver. REGIONAL GEOLOGY The Patagonia batholith, of Laramide age, crops out in the core of the Patagonia Mountains intruding Precambrian granite, Paleozoic sediments and Mesozoic igneous, volcanic and clastic rocks. This granodioritic batholith lies in a northwest-trending zone of Laramide plutonic rocks, which can be traced for a distance of 320 kilometers from the Nacozari district in Sonora, Mexico to the Silver Bell Mountains west of Tucson, Arizona. Several major porphyry copper systems occur within this plutonic belt including the Red Mountain deposit found at the northern end of the Patagonia Mountains. Data from more than 80 mineral deposits within the Patagonia Mountains show metal zoning symmetrical to the Patagonia granodiorite (Graybeal, 1975). Disseminated copper-molybdenum deposits occur within the batholith. Pyrometa-somatic, limestone replacement and vein deposits of copper, lead, zinc and silver occur in the wallrocks adjacent to the. granodiorite and epithermal manganese-silver deposits occur at the outer periphery of economic mineralization. GEOLOGY OF THE WASHINGTON CAMP - DUQUESNE DISTRICT Stratigraphy Nearly 900 meters of miogeosynclinal Permian and Pennsylvanian sediments are exposed in the district (Figure 2). In addition, 700 meters of older Paleozoic rocks crop out 6 kilometers north of the district. The Paleozoic rocks occur in fault contact with a sequence of Triassic-Jurassic pyroclastic and flow rocks, ranging in composition from latite to rhyolite.

A POWDER pattern for the (Cr, Mo, Co)R-phase annealed at 1200°C was reported in 1951.1 Through the courtesy of Prof. D. P. Shoemaker of Massachusetts Institute of Technology the authors became aware of inconsistencies of this pattern with that to be expected from the structure of the R-phase, as determined by Komura, Shoemaker, and Shoemaker.' In addition, Professor Shoemaker also noted that the powder pattern reported8 for the (Cr, Mo, Co)D-phase, annealed at 1300°C, agreed fairly well with that to be expected from the newly determined structure of the R-phase. In view of these findings, the previously reported powder patterns of the R-phase and of the D-phase were compared carefully. It was found that most lines in the two patterns (22 lines) were to a fair degree of accuracy related to each other by a single conversion ratio for the corresponding d spacings. The value of the conversion ratio was found to be 1.0058, so that the d spacings of the D-phase pattern previously reported were larger than the correspond- ing d spacings for the reported R-phase pattern by approximately that factor. The intensity relationships between corresponding lines in the two patterns were similar, as judged visually. The following exceptions were noted: Lines Nos. 2, 3, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25 of the D-phase pattern,:' all designated weak or very weak, were missing in the apparently somewhat fainter R-phase pattern used.' Lines 1, 2, 3, 5, 15 and 34 (all weak or very weak), reported for the R-phase, were missing in the D-phase pattern, Table I. In view of these observations it seemed probable that the two patterns differed from each other mainly by a slight change in lattice parameters (with c/a remaining approximately constant), and that the pattern previously reported for the R-phase contained some weak extraneous lines, most likely to be attributed to impurities. In order to check the foregoing assumption, two specimens of an alloy containing 43 pct by weight of cobalt, 41 pct molybdenum, and 16 pct chromium, which was within the composition range of stability of both the D-phase at 1300°C and of the R-phase at 1200°C, were homogenized at 1200 and 1300°C, respectively, and quenched. X-ray diffraction patterns of the powders of these two specimens, obtained with CrK radiation, were compared carefully with each other and with the D-phase pattern previously

As it is the plan of the War Department to return 400,000 soldiers a month during the next four months, Colonel Arthur Woods, Special Assistant Secretary f War, has requested the Engineering Societies to assist the Government by soliciting their members to advise the respective societies, at the earliest possible moment, f any place where companies can employ returned soldiers. This request applies not only to the professional men who are returning but also to the miners, mechanics and other skilled labor among the enlisted men. Army discipline has not only made these men think more quickly but also more willing and obedient workers. The whole training has been conducive to regular habits and clean living steadying these men and fitting them to meet emergencies more quickly and has instilled more loyalty to their superiors and to their jobs. Further, the military instruction they have received has increased the men's powers f concentration. The War Department cannot too strongly bring before the employers of skilled labor the fact that the employment f discharged soldiers will be advantageous to the employer and economically beneficial to the country. The following is a list of the vocations of the men who are now returning:

EUROPE continued to be unsettled, financially, commercially and socially. October opened with Germany in a state of turmoil following the Government's cessation of passive resistance to the French and Belgians. In many places there were riots with much bloodshed. In Bavaria a military dictator-ship was set up in order to keep peace. In the meanwhile France continued in an uncom-promising position.. Great Britain, having been diplo-matically discredited, disappeared from any prominence in the international picture. Under the constraint of circumstances the policy of deflation in Great. Britain was temporarily abandoned. Perhaps no other course was open, for with declining trade and heavily reduced revenue, and no chance for cutting expenses propor-tionately, a check to deflation comes of its own accord. The effects of this should become manifest in the course of a few months and should appear in the form of an improved margin between the prices for commodities and the wage costs in producing them. About Oct. 20 an effort was made to set up the Rheinland as a separate republic. On Oct. 26 were published communications from Lord Curzon to Secre-tary Hughes and the latter's reply. In these Lord Curzon drew attention to the gravity of the situation in Europe and expressed the hope that France might listen to renewed suggestions for a general inquiry. Secretary Hughes promised American cooperation, in this, with the reservation that the question of inter-national debts should not enter into the situation. In the latter part of October there were military mutinies and disorders in Greece, which resulted in the reestablishment of martial law by order of Col. Plas-tiras, who is virtually the dictator of Greece. The incipient revolt was promptly crushed.

This paper is the result of a study, in 1919, to determine how much surplus power could be produced through the proper utilization of the entire gas flow from the two furnace stacks at the Federal Furnace Plant, South Chicago, 111. Obviously, the problem was to measure the flow of gas through the main beyond the point where the amount necessary for stove operation mas rermoved. In all probability, blast-furnace gas is the most difficult gas to measure, because of the high moisture and dust content, and the widely fluctuating flow from the furnaces. This wide fluctuation of flow forbids the acceptance of any one group of flow road-ings as indicative of normal operating conditions. A study of the conditions showed that a recording device on gas flow was necessary. As the gas at the point of measurement had passed through met washers, and accordingly was saturated with water and contained considerable dust carried past the scrubbers in the form of sludge, no form of Pitot tube could be used, for this sludge would quickly plug the dynamic. and static holes, spoiling the gage readings. An even more serious objection to the use of Pitot tubes was the impossibility of accurately measuring the cross-sectional area of the gas main on the plane of Pitot-tube installation. Given an absolutely clean gas and a perfectly circular pipe, it would be safe to assume, through measurements of the pipe diameter, that the gas main was of a certain cross-sectional area. But the continual depositing of sludge and the fact that the main mas fabricated from riveted sheets led us to discard the idea of using Pitot tubes for. this service. The Venturi tube mas then considered, and had there been a sufficiently long straight run of gas main to accommodate a tube of the required size (72 by 28 in.) such an installation would very likely have been made. THE State Department can be of assistance to Americans in the petroleum business directly and indirectly. During the past few months, at the Arms Conference, it had a large hand in dealing with affairs indirectly affecting the oil problem. The conference has somewhat relieved the emphasis on naval strategy in relation to oil supply by limiting the number of naval vessels or the fleets of the Great Powers and in maintaining the "open door" in the Far East in respect of the development of the natural resources of that region by defining that policy in a nine-power treaty. The largest competitors of the. United States in the petroleum field are parties to that treaty. The Department of State also has stood steadfastly for the principle of equal opportunity in the Dutch East Indies, Mesopotamia, and Persia. The Department of State has been of indirect assistance in connection with oil problems by insisting on the recognition of treaty rights and other guar-antees, such as most-favored-nation clauses, and mandate provisions. I am not speaking as a representative of the Depart-ment of State, as L now have no connection with that institution, but my experience of several years as a member of the department and my practice since my resignation have given me opportunity to see the department from both the inside and the outside, and to measure its limitations as well as its resources.

FRom 1886 to 1889, approximately, Henry M. Howe was engaged most actively in preparing his Afetallugy of Sieei, which became the foundation for his leadership in the science of physical metallurgy of steel. During the same period, Hadfield was developing the first of the industrially-important alloy steels, and Riley was initiating the commercialization of nickel steel. Both of these alloys are treated briefly in Howe's book; indeed, he missed practically nothing of interest in all the steel literature preceding 1889. There had been many good books on steel before his, but none of the same character. His genius, like that of Aristotle and Francis Bacon, manifested itself in the painstaking collection of data, followed by their coordination and interpretation. Not only manganese and nickel steels were discussed, but several which most of us, with our tendency to overlook the past, are wont to regard as exclusively recent developments, such as: silicon, chrome, copper, tungsten, vanadium, titanium, chrome-tungsten and many other steels. But Howe never devoted much special attention, in his writings, to alloy steels; the science of the relations of iron and carbon offered field enough even for his capacity for constructive thought. And, today we find the science of alloy steels in much the same condition as was the metallurgy of steel before Howe wrote his first great book. Many, many important facts have been presented to the world, especially by Sir Robert Hadfield, James Riley, Henri le Chatelier, Kotaro Honda and his associates, Maunsel White, Harry Brearley, and a host of others. Several books have been devoted wholly or chiefly to alloy steels, such as those by Hibbard, Mars, Heyn and Wetzell, Grube, Burnham, Gillett and Mack, Billón, Brearley, Monypenny, Becker, Savoia, Sauveur, Guillet, Tammann, Guertler, Goerens, Guia, Wuest, Ledebur, Schenck, Aitchison, Osann, Guettier, Buchetti, Escard. Richard Pennefather Rothwell, was born May 1, 1836, at Oxford, Upper Canada (now the province of Ontario). His father, Rev. John Rothwell, was a native of County Meath, Ireland, where the family (originally, no doubt, a Scottish one) still holds large estates, under a grant from William and Mary. John Rothwell was graduated at Trinity College, Dublin, and became a clergyman of the Established Church. He married Elizabeth Garnett, of Athearn Castle, Ireland, and subsequently came to Canada. It is said that he was a man of liberal views combined with sterling piety, an enthusiastic sportsman and yachtsman, and a pastor who refused for many years to accept any remuneration from his parishioners. After preliminary education, the subject of this sketch entered Trinity College, Toronto, with the intention of studying law; but a year later he resolved to become a civil engineer, and entered the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Troy, N. Y., where he was graduated, with high standing, as civil engineer, in 1858. He then went to Paris, and entered the Imperial School of Mines, where, by reason of the proficiency he had already acquired in civil engineering, he was able to finish in two years and a half the full three-year course, and to take the degree of Engineer of Mines. In 1861 he took the "practical courses" in mining and ore-dressing at the Mining Academy of Freiberg, Saxony. IT may be a far cry from the days of the old horse whim, and it is relatively a long way back to hand production in factories. Modern machinery has made possible deep shaft-sinking, newer methods have increased the recovery of mineral. Technically, excavating and ore dressing have advanced as has mass production and its many ramifications in the manufacture of commercial product. To those of the mining industry who would have us believe that mining and manufacturing are totally different enterprises, it can be said that certain differences do exist. These differences rather than being fundamental are the result of adhering to past practices which were possibly sound years ago but do not measure up today. Differences in managerial control, sales, and distribution, cost finding, etc., are often so pronounced that efforts to compare or contrast are almost futile.

INTRODUCTION The art of raise boring has seen rapid development and use in underground mines both for primary development and production during the past 10 years. The intensive full scale tests by a major mining company in the Precambrian rocks of the Sudbury district of Ontario, Canada, have lead the way to the general acceptance of the raise drills. The rock successfully raise bored in the Sudbury area has compressive strengths varying from 30,000 to 50,000 p.s.i. As a result of the intensive study, it became evident to many mining companies that raise boring could be adapted to many mining systems. Pyrometallurgical processes have the thermodynamic capability of treating complex and dirty ores and concentrates to produce high purity metals and inert slags. Modem pyrometallurgical processes are environmentally sound and competitive with other processes. However, there is still a need for sensors and other practical tools that permit a rapid evaluation of the performance of these processes. In order to contribute to satisfying this fundamental requirement, the authors developed the IDENT.LA software that permits the automatic mineralogical analyses of inorganic materials, including the final and intermediate products of pyrometallurgical processes. The technique allows determining the grain size distribution of mineralized inclusions, the surface relations between metallic phases, and conducting modal analyses of the essential phases that are present in the samples. Three basic automatic operations are performed: creating a representative image of the sample; identifying the metallic and non-metallic phases; and measuring the features of the resulting image. The results are used to evaluate the performance of pyrometallurgical and other processes. In this paper, the authors discuss the application of the technique to a sample of slag from a slag cleaning process that uses a carbonaceous reductant. In this case, process performance impacts not only on the efficient reduction of the slag magnetite and on copper recovery but also on the quality of the process off-gas. The mineralogical analysis of the slag is a valuable tool in assessing process performance and in recommending changes of operating conditions.

"Previous Work:As outlined in previous papers* ond clays for graphite crucibles have been tested at the plants of the Detroit Lubricator Co., and the Detroit Copper and Brass Rolling Mills, Detroit, Mich.These tests indicated that there were two American clays (Missouri pot clay and Illinois kaolin) that tested better than the Klingenberg (German) clay. Dorset (English) ball clay was tenth in the list.Making the Crucibles:After it had been determined that American clays can be used successfully in graphite crucible manufacture and service, the next step in the investigation was to determine the value of American graphites as compared to the foreign, These final tests were carried out at the plant of the Detroit Lubricator Co., through the courtesy of Mr. G. B. Duffield. The crucibles, as previously. were made at the plant of the Vesuvius Crucible Co., Swissvale, Penna., from a formula compiled by the Bureau of Mines and under the supervision of Bureau engineers.The graphites to be tested were given an initial to indicate their source. The number of crucibles made and shipped are set forth in Table 1."

This report gives general expressions for evaluating various thermo-dynamic properties applicable to a two-component system, including liquid-vapor equilibria. In addition, expressions are developed for some of the quantities useful in making thermodynamic consistency checks on phase equilibria data. These formulas were developed from the general principles of thermodynamics and are expressed in terms of the compressibility factor, which is assumed to be an explicit function of the molal density, the absolute thermodynamic temperature, and the composition.
