Cortez Gold Mines operated a conventional 2,100 mtpd (2, 300 stpd) cyanidation plant until the 5 million ton ore body was worked out in 1973. (See Gold and Silver Cyanidation Plant Practice by F. W. McQuiston, Jr. and R. S. Shoemaker, Society of Mining Engineers, AIME 1975.) Sub-grade material was dump leached at the mine -mill location in 1971, and the resulting pregnant solutions were added to the feed in the plant's Merrill-Crowe precipitation unit for gold recovery. In early 1973, however, Cortez put into operation their Gold Acres mine which was located about 13 krn (8 miles) to the west of the 'Cortez mine. Economics at that time dictated the heap leaching of the lower grade portion of the ore body with the higher grade being trucked to the Cortez plant for milling. Leach ore was moved directly from the open pits to prepared leach pads located on a gently sloping terrain of 570 grade. Preliminary pad preparation at the leach site included removal of vegetation which was composed of sagebrush and grading of the base. Pads were comprised of mostly minus 74 micron (200 mesh) materials and were made of clay-silt or slime tailings spread on the pad area in thin 50 to 75 mm (2 to 3 in. ) layers, compacted with a vibrating roller compactor to a depth of about 380 mm (15 in.). This was followed with a 100 mrn (4 in.) layer of coarse rock to prevent erosion on the pad and to allow solutions to move laterally under the heaps. Leach solutions normally traveled the length of the heaps and were collected in plastic-lined ditches from which they flowed by gravity to the pregnant solution storage pond. Both pregnant and barren ponds were constructed in the same manner as the leach pads - being lined with compacted tailings or clay silts. The Gold Acres facility required pregnant solution storage of 6 million liters (1.6 million gal) and barren storage of 3.8 million liters (1.0 million gal) designed to handle two to three days of heap drainage or to retain run-off from a major rainfall. In the Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute for the year 1878, in the account of the proceedings of the annual meeting in March of that year, when Mr. Bell read his paper On the Separation of Phosphorus from Pig-Iron, occurs the following statement, as part of the reported discussion of that paper: " Mr. Sidney Thomas stated that he had succeeded in effecting the almost complete removal of phosphorus in the Bessemer process. Experiments had been carried on at Blaenavon, with the co-operation of Mr. Martin, on quantities varying between 6 lbs. and 10 cwt., and some hundred analyses made by Mr. Gilchrist (who had the conduct of the experiments from the first) showing the removal of from 20 per cent. to 99.9 per cent. of phosphorus in the converter. He believed the practical difficulties in the way had been overcome, and that Cleveland pig might be made into good steel without any intermediate process. He hoped on a future occasion to lay full details before the Institute." GEORGE WEINMAN: Our first group leader for the discussion, "Ups and Downs of Downsizing," wishes to remain anonymous. ANONYMOUS PRESENTER: When George and Jamie asked me to do this, I thought a while about what to say and went through several variations of what I’ll present today. I came up with the title "Ups and Downs of Downsizing." A lot of downsizing has occurred in all of our industries-mining in particular. While this downsizing has gone on there's no doubt that all of us produced more and more, probably with less and less people and less and less resources. But I contend that there's also a big downside associated with this. I disagree with a point made in the keynote presentation yesterday, the point being that vendors are bringing new technology to us. I can agree that the major changes associated with equipment and similar items are being brought to us by vendors. But I do contend that there's an awful lot that's getting away from us-especially if you factor in the integrated supply or the strategic alliance or the various and sundry related purchasing techniques. I contend that we are missing a lot of, let's call it, lesser technology; not major equipment changes, but different tools, different techniques for doing things, different left-handed widgets. The integrated suppliers, to some degree, are bringing this to us; but I am concerned about the small guy who comes up with a good idea but deals through integrated suppliers rather than having direct contact with plant people. They're probably going to go somewhere else and market their wares. That's what I'm hearing from a lot of smaller vendors. I also think that we are losing a lot of our knowledge base. Every time you shrink an organization somebody leaves. The bottom line: less people. When a person leaves-and I don't care who he or she is, be it the janitor who's cleaning the bathroom, the operator, the engineer-when that person leaves there's some knowledge that goes with that per- son. And sometimes that knowledge is quite valuable. I've worked more or less at the plant "low." I can't tell you how many excellent, viable projects have come from people who said, "Look here. There's a better way of doing this." And, you know, they were right. Now, maybe they didn't have the resources or the expertise to develop these ideas into full projects, but they had that basic idea. Someone may say, "Well, if we put a no. 6 skyhook here, so we can lift this particular pump without bringing a crane from 30 miles away ...." No. 6 skyhooks are a bit expensive, but what if we put together a little structural steel here or whatnot?

A distinct hydrocarbon maturation anomaly coincides with the Gold Acres open pit, Nevada (Figure 1). Both atomic hydrogen to carbon (H-C) ratios and reflectance measurements of contained organic matter indicate significantly higher maturity in samples collected within the confines of the open pit than in samples from the surrounding region (not shown in Figure 1).

As a continuation of previous work, further tests have been carried out to recover silver from the residues obtained in a zinc jarosite process. Selective flotation has been performed with different reagents, and ?cleaning steps have been introduced to upgrade the silver concentrate. Leaching of crude residues, as well as flotation tailings, has been carried out with cyanide and thiourea. Finally, the different beneficiation methods are compared, and the industrial aspects? of their application are reviewed.

At nuclear facilities, three types of radioactive waste must be managed: (1) high-level liquid waste containing fission products from the chemical separation of irradiated uranium, (2) low-level condensates from the concentration of the high-level waste, and (3) dry solids such as obsolete process equipment, spent ion exchange resins, and irradiated metal scrap. The geological and environmental characteristics of a site are important considerations in planning the waste management program. At the Savannah River Plant, low-level liquids and dry solids are safely and economically placed in the soil where the geologic and hydrologic conditions are favorable. Within the general area where the waste originates, studies are made to locate seepage basins and burial grounds in the most favorable sites: (1) soils should have a high ion exchange capacity and moderate to low permeability, (2) the water table should be deep, and (3) burial sites should be relatively distant from the nearest flowing stream.

Mineral wool was by far the most valuable material among these minor nonmetals reported in the United States in 1956. GREENSAND Output of greensand (glauconite) declined in 1956. The Kaylorite Corp., Dunkirk, Md., and the Inversand Co., Sewell, N. J., were the only firms that reported production of this commodity. Output came from open pits in Calvert County, Md., and Gloucester County, N.J.

The New Jersey Zinc Co. successfully holed through a 2 ½ -mile haulage tunnel connecting its new Ivanhoe shaft with the Van Mater Shaft at Austinville, Va. This 8 x 10-ft cross-section tunnel was driven from both ends and met at a point approximately a mile from one shaft and a mile and a half from the other. In order to make certain that the faces met accurately on line and grade it was necessary to refine conventional mine surveying practices. The mines that are serviced by these shafts are located in the southwestern part of Virginia approximately midway between Roanoke and Bristol at the west foot of the Blue Ridge. While the presence of lead-zinc sulfide ores has been known in this area for more than 200 years, it was in 1902 that New Jersey Zinc Co. acquired the Austinville property, which has been in constant operation since that time. About ten years ago the company undertook an extensive diamond drilling program at Ivanhoe several miles to the southwest. This program was successful in locating sufficient ore to justify the purchase of a number of the properties in this area and plans were made to develop the new orebodies. The discovery of this ore as well as substantial additional reserves at Austinville resulted in a decision by the company to increase its daily milling capacity to 3000 tons, of which about 1000 tons would be supplied from the Ivanhoe mine.

NEARLY everyone who has not had the benefit of study in the field of metallurgy subscribes to a persistent and enthusiastic belief in the legendary lost art of hardening copper. This of course supplies a perfect introduction to a chapter of information on copper and its alloys, since the dissipation of fallacies and superstitions affecting an art probably constitutes the best method of getting at its real substance. Metals are hardened, but also embrittled, by a plurality of impurities. In the modern technology of copper-base metal products, we are familiar with a great host of materials, passing from one extreme of dead soft copper better than 99.9 pct pure, which in the form of wire about as thick as a match will stand hundreds of full twists in a 12-in. length, to an alloy containing less than 3 pct of alloyed substance possessing the strength of pretty good steel and capable of manufacture into razor blades, should we suddenly be deprived of steel; certainly a much better material for this purpose. Every copper alloy known to primitive man lies in some inter- mediate position and the ancient bronzes that have been found all over the world wherever an early civilization existed are usually contaminated by such impurities as sulfur, oxygen, antimony, arsenic, iron, or other materials, so that they could not possibly conform to any modern intelligent specification insuring the best combination of useful properties in alloys of their type and would go

On 26 June 2000 a hydraulic fill retaining barricade failed at the Bronzewing mine in Western Australia. The barricade failure resulted in the release of 19 000 m3 of saturated hydraulic fill into the mine, which caused the deaths of three miners. Following this tragic accident, the practices and procedures of mines using hydraulic fills came under intense scrutiny by regulatory bodies and mining companies. At this time, the use of hydraulic fill at NormandyÆs zinc/copper Scuddles mine was suspended and waste rock became the sole backfill material in use underground. By 2003, development of the mine adjacent to Scuddles, Gossan Hill had progressed to a point where a self-supporting fill material was required to enable full recovery of high-grade ore. Cemented hydraulic fill (CHF) was identified as the optimal fill type and work began on designing appropriate management procedures and controls to ensure the safe implementation. This work included definition of the fill properties, plant design and construction, reticulation system design, design of stope barricades and drainage systems and fill placement control and monitoring practices. CHF placement began on 16 July 2004 and has continued to date. Significant operational experience has since been gained in areas including plant performance, fill product quality assurance, barricade construction, stope drainage and in situ performance.
