This paper changes the section of copper of copper to aluminum adapter bar into aluminum plate covered one face or double face with copper coat, and changes the conductor material of knife switch, fuse box, plug and socket into steel plate covered one face or double face with copper plate, and manufactures the composite (two layers or three layers) metal plates by means of explosion welding with the plates installed horizontally. Introduced in this paper are the blasting designing technique, manufacturing process and the electrical performances of the explosion bonded products. Besides, this paper presents the designing and manufacturing technique of cumulative charges and their time detonating units for cutting off the retired nuclear submarine pipes. Experiments on cutting off the stainless steel pipes by cumulative flow and on the time detonation are made. Whildin, Mining Superintendent, Lehigh Coal & Navigation Co., Lansford, Pa., presented a. paper on Steep Pitch Mining of Thick Coal Seams, illustrated by numerous drawings. This paper will be printed in the November number of the Bulletin. A lively discussion followed the reading of the paper.

As commercial copper electrorefineries look to expand their capacities by increasing their operating current density, the likelihood of anode passivation intensifies. To improve the industry?s understanding of the passivation phenomena, the role of anode composition was evaluated. While previous studies have focused on studying one impurity element at a time, this study was conducted using forty-four commercial electrorefining anode samples supplied by ten copper companies The passivation response of each sample was evaluated under accelerated galvanostatic conditions in synthetic copper electrowinning electrolyte at 65°C. This information allows for correlations between composition and passivation tendencies over a wide range of impurity elements and concentrations. It was found that selenium, tellurium, silver, lead and nickel accelerated passivation. It appeared that oxygen accelerated passivation when increased from 500 to 1500 ppm, but further increases did not have an effect. Arsenic was the only impurity found that inhibited passivation.

The plant produces 130 kg slag per tonne of crude steel, to add to the basic oxygen steel-making converter slag stockpile of around 2 500 000 t. The slags contain 1.81% V2O5, which can be rendered water-soluble by salt roasting with NaCl and an alkali such as Na2CO3. Preliminary tests gave less than 3% V recovery from slag under optimum roasting conditions when NaCl, NaCO3 or Na2SO4 was used, but showed that sodium phosphate could make all the V water-soluble when roasted with slag in a ratio of 3:1 at 1 100-1 200 degrees C. Almost complete leaching was obtained within 2 h with water at boiling point. Sodium vanadate was precipitated by acidifying the leach liquor with HCl to a pH of about 2.2

Belize remained relatively insulated from the social and political turmoil that affected some of its Central American neighbors. This stability encouraged new foreign investments that assisted the economy, especially in tourism and agriculture. The mineral sector remained limited to construction-oriented materials. Oil exploration efforts continued by the various concessionaires.

In general the software required by a blast designer includes tools that graphically present blast designs (surface & underground), can analyze a design or predict its result, and can assess blasting results. As computers develop and computer literacy continues to rise the development of and use of such tools will spread.

Manufacturers and users of energetic material (e.g., propellants, explosives, pyrotechnics (PEP)) generate unserviceable, obsolete, off-specification, damaged, and contaminated items that are characterized as "reactive wastes" by definition, and therefore regulated under RCRA, Subtitle C, as hazardous waste. Energetic wastes, to include waste ordnance and munitions items, have historically been disposed of by open burning/open detonation (OB/OD), particularly by the Department of Defense (DoD). However, increasing regulatory constraints have led to the recent reduction and limited use of OB/OD treatment.

Margolf, RMCMl Program Chairman and Vice President, Western Coal Development, W. R. Grace & Co. MR. McKEEVER: I'd like to do one thing and that's to introduce our Program Chairman, Charlie Margolf, who will be handling this portion of the program. Charlie and I have been acquainted since late 1973. He has worked together with me on several projects at W. R. Grace here in the west; a dear friend and one that I just want to say thanks to again. I think I have a little token of that appreciation here for Charlie. Here you are Charlie. (present given) I turn the command over to you. Mr. Margolf, a native of State College, Pennsylvania, received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering from Pennsylvania State University in 1950 and a Juris Doctor Degree from University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1953. His professional experience has beem as an attorney in the Law Department of Reynolds Metals Company, Richmond, Virginia, where he served as legal counsel to the Geological Department the mining subsidiaries of the parent company both foreign and domestic, the Power Department and the Oil and Gas Division. He was closely associated with Reynolds Mining Corporation's project at Lake DeSmet, Wyoming, from its inception in 1954 and became Manager of the Wyoming Division of Reynolds Mining Corporation when it was established in 1966, holding that position until September 1972 when he joined Cameron Engineers, Inc. of Denver, Colorado as Vice President in charge of its coal, water and environmental activities. Mr. Margolf joined W. R. Grace & Co. in January 1974 as Director of Western Coal Operations. Memberships are held in the Virginia Bar Association, the Wyoming Bar Association, the American Bar Association and its Section of Natural Resources Law, the Wyoming Engineering Society, the Colorado Mining Association, the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute which he has served as vice president for Wyoming, the Society of Mining Engineers of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers, the Minerals Information Committee of the Denver Chapter of AIME and the Denver Coal Club which he has served as Chairman of its Board of Directors. He has also been a member of the Montana Coal Council and served as a director, the Wyoming Water Development Association which he has served as a director for industry and as first vice president and the Wyoming Mining Association. He has been reappointed by Governor Lamm to the Governor's Scientific Advisory Council. He was appointed by the Federal Power Commission, Gas Policy Advisory Council, to its Supply- Technical Advisory Task Force - Synthesized Gaseous Hydrocarbon Fuels and served as Vice Chairman of that Task Force. He has been reappointed by the Secretary of the Interior to the Solid Fuels Unit, Department of the Interior, National Defense Executive Reserve. He also serves on the Advisory Council to the Industrial Ecology Institute of the Colorado School of Mines and was recently elected a member of the Board of Directors of ROMCOE (Center for Environmental Problem Solving). THE hardening of alloys by the precipitation of a second phase has long been an important technological process. One approach towards improving our understanding of this phenomenon has been a correlation of mechanical properties with such parameters as particle size and inter par ticle spacing.' Several reviews of such data have appeared.2-4 A major limitation to this approach has been that for most alloys the particles are submicroscopic in size in the range of optimum hardness. Precipitation-hardening copper-cobalt alloys, therefore, are of interest, because the ferromagnetic properties of the precipitate make it possible to measure particle size, number of particles, and so forth, from magnetic measurements alone.5, 6 Livingston and Becker7 have applied these techniques to a study of precipitation hardening in an alloy of 2 pct Co in copper. It was found from magnetic measurements that nearly all the cobalt to be precipitated was out of solution within a few minutes at 600°C, whereas the peak in tensile yield stress was not attained until a much longer aging time. Thus during the first 1000 min of aging time at 600°C the Yield stress was increasing while a constant volume of precipitate was coarsening, i.e., while particle size and interparticle spacing were increasing. Peak yield stress was reached at an average particle radius of about 70A. The earlier study was confined to one alloy at one aging temperature, so that the volume fraction of precipitate was fixed and, therefore, particle size and interparticle spacing could not be independently varied. The work has now been extended to several alloys of varying percentage cobalt in copper, and to aging at various temperatures. It was hoped that such a study might clarify the relative importance to precipitation hardening of particle size, interparticle spacing, and volume fraction of precipitate. EXPERIMENT The alloys studied contained 0.7, 1.3, 2.0, and 3.2 wt pct Co in copper. They were prepared from electrolytic copper and electrolytic cobalt in a vacuum -induction furnace, worked to 3/8-in.-diam rod, and machined into tensile specimens with a gage section 1 1/2 in. long and 3/16 in. in diam. All specimens were given a solution treatment consisting of a 30-min anneal in nitrogen at 1000° C followed by a quench into iced brine. Subsequent aging was done in nitrogen and followed by a water quench. Average grain diameter was approximately 0.01 in.

Tailings facilities tell a story to the public about how the mining industry manages its activities. They also create a risk that must be managed for the long term. All the knowledge and technology is available to safely design, build, operate and decommission tailings facilities.   Tailings at Waikato North Head Minesite are pumped as slurry, over long distances and against high static discharge heads to backfill the excavated area. WNH is, under the mining licence, obliged to reconcile the topography of mined areas to the closest possible resemblance of the original terrain. The active tailings areas are located near main operational facilities and detailed plans and procedures have been developed to ensure a safe and continuous operation.   The concentration plant is designed as two identical and independent plants. Each plant has its own tailings slurry pumping system.   This paper represents a general overview of the tailings disposal practice at WNH mine site. It discusses tailings delivery, construction and water management.

The design and operation of a double- V compartment vertical-flow settler by B. N. SOUTAR, B.Sc. (Mech. Eng.) Wits. (Visitor) This paper describes the development of a vertical-flow settler for underground pumping installations in the mines of Gold Fields of South Africa Ltd. The recommended settler employs the principle of 'dynamic filtration': the solids that are in suspension in mine water are filtered through a stable horizontal bed of flocculated particles, a technique that was established in about 1958.

Although the evaluation of autoclave oxidation for Getchell ore was begun nearly 40 years ago, its ultimate implementation in 1989 represents the first substantial improvement in the economics of processing this refractory ore. Sulfide ores at Getchell were previously roasted prior to leaching (in the 30's and 60's), resulting in somewhat lower recoveries than are currently realized by autoclave oxidation. Recoveries on the order of 90% are expected from the high-arsenic sulfide ore over the expected 10-year mine life.

Water quality impacts of shallow water submersion of partially weathered and oxidized waste rock containing reactive sulphide minerals were investigated in laboratory column lysimeter studies. The waste rock investigated was highly reactive, contained oxidation reaction products from previous exposure and weathering, and had a low sulphur content of approximately 2 % S, mostly as pyrite. The submerged waste rock, though previously weathered, had high oxygen consumption, resulting in rapid depletion of dissolved oxygen in its pore water, within a shallow depth of ~2?5 cm from the surface. The surface and pore water qualities of the submerged waste rock were significantly impacted by the dissolution and release of previous-oxidation-reaction products, which contributed to their rapid acidification and having increased concentrations of dissolved SO4, Fe total and other metals: Al, Mn, Ca, Cu, Ni, Zn and Pb. Despite the high porosity and permeability of the waste rock, the diffusion controlled mass transfer from the submerged waste rock to the overlying water cover was relatively low for most ionic species. Additional surface oxidation of the sub-merged, partially weathered waste rock was on-going, but its impact on the overall surface water quality was low and masked by the dissolution and release of previous oxidation reaction products to both surface and pore water regimes.

IN the following pages are described the history and present operations of one of the country's great mining and metallurgical organizations-the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company. Though the articles are largely of interest to the technical man, the success of the Company as a business enterprise should not be overlooked. Almost immediately following incorporation 42 years ago payment of dividends began and the total to date has been about $140,000,000, roughly half to preferred and half to common shareholders. Founders of the Company were Boston businessmen and financiers interested in such diverse enterprises as shoe machinery manufacture, banking, newspaper publications, and stock brokerage. The legal profession also was represented. The Company is one of the few, among the leaders in the mining industry, that has resisted the urge to move its home office to New York and has always remained in Boston. Perhaps for that reason it has been regarded as a "conservative" company. Conservative or not, it has certainly spread out geographically and it has certainly put its eggs in many baskets. In addition to the precious metals and the major nonferrous metals it has ventured into coal and recently in a small way into the field of oil and gas. It seems to have a predilection for the North American Continent; for in addition to Alaska, Canada, and Mexico it has had important operations in California, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, and particularly in various districts in Utah.

After the South Deep complex was purchased by Goldfields in 2006a re-feasibility study was done and the life of mine (LOM) was extended to 52 years. This also implied that the mine?s infrastructure would have to be enhanced. One of the changes was the proposal of five new main orepass systems to be excavated before the mine reaches full production in 2013. Excavations started to show signs of scaling, and in some cases, whole new excavations were lost. This particular area was exposed to very high stresses and the geology was prone to body delimination rendering the relevant areas unstable. This paper investigates the conditions at the location of one of the proposed orepass systems, and the best possible orientation was suggested to ensure that the orepass system would be stable and have a practical life. It was, however, found that the fourth leg of the orepass system would require further support to be classified as stable by the chief rock engineer and the section geologist of South Deep. Several support methods and orepass system linings would then be analysed and evaluated to give calculated recommendations on how to productively and practically support an orepass system. Molecular models of complexes of poorly studied bismuth, gold, and arsenic mineral clusters and reagents were created for use in collector activity forecasting using Chem Bio 3D and ChemOffice2005, with optimization by MM2. The density functional theory approach was used to determine HOMO, LUMO, SOMO, and total energies, atomic charges, and s, p, d- populations for various compounds. The structure-based virtual screening (SBVS) and docking technique was proposed to reduce the vast number of compounds to a more manageable number for selection of potential flotation candidates. The prognosis of collector activity evaluation (PCAE) strategy was proposed as a consistent approach to estimate the interaction between a collector and a mineral cluster as the difference between the total energy and sum of cluster energy and collector energy to search the analogue of butyl xanthate. The negative relationship between PCAE and flotability was shown. The combinations of dialkylamino sulfhydryl collectors can be considered as prospective reagents for gold-bearing sulfide ore flotation. These results were confirmed by experimental data in ore flotation. The increase in recovery of gold and bismuth with the aid of a combination of reagents has been established and additional cyanidation of tailings has been avoided.
