The Misima deposit is on Misima Island in the Lousaide Archipelago, 240 km east-southeast of the Papua New Guinea mainland, and 600 km east of Port Morseby. Misima is a narrow mountainous island 40 km long and up to 10 km wide. The highest point is 1035 m above sea level. Gold mineralization is restricted to the eastern and less rugged third of the island. The Melanesian population lives in coastal villages. Subsistence agriculture is the main activity, although copra and cocoa are grown in plantations on the eastern and southern coasts. Prior to 1950, mining was important in the economy of the island. Climate is tropical, with little seasonal variation in temperature or rainfall. Tropical cyclones occur about every 10 years (Fig. 1).

Lead concentrates from Kuroko (black ore) mines, which contain 4-7% Cu, 55% Pb, 3-777, Zn, and 0.5-0.9% As, are pretreated by a hydrometallurgical process before electric furnace smelting with other lead resources from Kuroko. The hydrometallurgical pretreatment involves sulfuric acid leaching in the first stage and ferric leaching in the second stage. This paper describes the short history of lead recovery from Kuroko and the performance of laboratory tests and pilot plant and commercial operations.

In most industries it is normal commercial policy to try to gear production to the market. In times of scarcity output is pushed to its maximum and in times of glut output is reduced. Because of the effects of supply and demand, these times correspond to times of high and low prices respectively so the policy results in maximising long run total profits. Stockpiling is often an integral part of the policy. Stocks are accumulated during depressed market conditions and sold off when demand revives. This further increases the long run total profits. However, such policies cause violent fluctuations in short term profitability and impose severe financial strains. Indeed planning and implementing the policies are a central management concern which is often critical to the success of the industry. The mining industry is no exception and, for many raw materials, trying to balance supply with demand is an international problem. Stockpiling and restricted production agreements are common elements of policy. But very little attention has been paid to the one additional control which is unique to the mining industry, namely, the cut off grade. This neglect is apparent at all levels from individual mines to national economies.

THE processes of superficial alteration depend on physical conditions, environment, geologic history and chemical and mineralogical composition. Superficial alteration is confined particularly to the zone of shallow circulation, as this is the zone of solution; its rocks are open and the circulation within it is compara-tively rapid. The enrichment of ore deposits in this zone, therefore, is of special interest. The depth of the vadose, or zone of shallow circula-tion, is variable, because its lower limit depends on the variable level of ground water. In moist, hilly countries its depth varies from a few feet to several hundred feet. In arid regions where the rainfall is low and evaporation great, this zone may extend to much greater depths. Permeability of the deposits . is essential to the downward migration of metals. In rocks, that have been fractured since the primary ore was deposited, there is generally more extensive and deeper enrichment than in ore deposits that have been but slightly fractured. A warm climate increases chemical action and abundant rain fall is favorable to enrichment. Low relief and slow erosion give long periods of weathering and thorough leaching.

Faced with the alternative, a summary, that could only fail to -do justice to the subject, I turned elsewherl? for inspiration and found it in Chester Wilmot's book "The Struggle for Europe". Those of you who have read this masterly contribution to the literature of World War II will recall that he takes us, most dramatically, behind the scenes and we learn of the thoughts and ideas that were uppermost in the minds of both allied and enemy leaders at times when decision's that profoundly influenced the course of the war were taken. I felt I could safely follow this rather novel approach to my own problem. Strengthened by the realisation that the technical achievements of the Company have largely been covered over the years, and that the results of our labours are mainly here before you, I have attempted to liven up my modest canvas by going behind the scenes, and have sought to deal with ideas and the reasons for important decisions, rather. than to embark upon a purely descriptive essay.If then, you will bear with me, we shall skip back through the years to the days of struggle that our President's address has so aptly covered, and find that one man's ideas and faith stand out beyond all others. W. H. Corbould must always be credited with having founded the enterprise, for he correctly appraised the potential of the struggling prospect and foresaw what could be done, despite the handicaps of geography, climate and need for heavy expenditure.

AT the first meeting of the Institute, a paper was read by Mr. Rothwell, calling attention to the importance of at once considering the great waste of anthracite coal under the present system of mining and preparing that fuel for market, and a committee was appointed to examine and report upon the method now in use. About the time the committee were selected, a general resumption of work, after the long strike, took place in the coal regions, and the members of the committee have not in consequence had as much leisure to devote to the study of the question as its importance de¬mands. In the present preliminary report we shall merely sketch out the plan which we propose to pursue in our investigations, so that when our fellow-members are called upon to assist us in our work by fur¬nishing statistics, etc., they may understand more clearly for what object our inquiries will be made. As one of the most practicable methods of obtaining the informa¬tion requisite for an intelligent consideration of our subject, we pro¬pose to send, from time to time, to members and others interested in the mining of anthracite coal, printed sets of questions relating to points under consideration. We would here impress upon our fellow¬-members the importance of filling up these papers as far as they can from their own knowledge. We would, of course, wish each ques¬tion to be answered as fully as possible, but we do not expect every one to answer them all. The Agnew Nickel Mine has a short his-tory of mining activities. However it has experienced a large variety of ground support problems. These problems relate to geological, hydrological, geomechanical, structural and mining techniques. The majority of the prob-lems occur in other underground mines. How-ever the large serpentinite hosted ore body which contains over 80% of the ore has prob-lems rarely encountered in other mines. Sol-utions to the problems are only being gained by understanding the factors creating them.

Experience of Hard Rock TBM excavating soil in Wanjiazhai Yellow River Diversion Project tells us that selection of Hard Rock TBM to excavate soil in case that rock dominates overall length of tunnel, could be a compromise among tunneling speed, cost and quality. Risk of this operation could be greatly reduced with a detailed study of the geomechanical characteristics of the soil and, if the characteristics are suitable, money and time can be saved by using Hard Rock Double Shield TBM.

Three substrates (MgO crystal, CaF2 crystal and Mg plate) were used to construct thin layers of Mg(OH)2. Various routes were used to modify these substrates, including surface hydration and sol-gel coating. In each case, it was found (by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) that thin layers of Mg(OH)2 could be produced. In the case of hydrated layers, the surface morphology of the Mg(OH)2 resembles the bulk platelet shape of precipitated Mg(OH)2.

Laboratory testing programs were conducted to investigate the performance under compression loading of several types of geomembranes and geotextiles proposed for use in heap and dump leach projects. Synthetic liners of several thicknesses were sandwiched between representative subgrade soils and cover materials, thus modeling in the laboratory the actual installation conditions expected. Performance was evaluated by visual inspection and vacuum testing. Several testing procedures and equipment were used to investigate the effect of these testing parameters on the predicted performance.

This paper describes the planning, analysis, design and operational experience of highwall mining based on auger drilling techniques applied to thick coal seams exposed in an opencut highwall. Being the first time such technology has been used in Australia, a large commitment to technical design and logistics planning was given by Callide Coalfields Pty Ltd. This commitment included technical and operations management and supervision, mine services, and the retention of consultants to undertake geotechnical analysis, instrument preparation and instrument installation.

Coal-clay waste slurries were dewatered in laboratory-and small-scale continuous tests by the Bureau of Mines using polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a flocculant. Dewatering from a nominal 7-wt-pct solids to over 50-wt-pct solids was accomplished using 0.5 lb of PEO per ton of feed in small-scale continuous tests. Parameters such as pH, initial solids content, and PEO concentrations were investigated. Water recovered from dewatering was reused as dilutant for PEO solutions.
