Coal's participation in the domestic energy market depends to a very large extent upon the cost of coal delivered to consumers. Today the principal use of coal in the U.S. is in steam-electric generating stations. Generally, it is the delivered cost per million Btu's that is given the greatest weight in choosing either oil, natural gas or coal as the fuel used in these power plants. There are three major cost components of generating electric energy in steam-electric plants. These expenses expressed in terms of "dollars per kilowatt year" are: (1) operation and maintenance of necessary facilities, (2) fixed charges of necessary capital investment, and (3) fuel. Tungsten-containing ores are mined on all continents of the world. China is the world's largest producer and controls the world's largest reserves. The USSR, itself a sizeable producer, is estimated to be the world's largest consumer. The major use for tungsten in the noncommunist world is in production of cemented tungsten carbides for cutting, drilling, and wear parts. Other major uses include lamp wires, steels for tools, and armaments. Real tungsten prices have been in a general decline since 1977-1979 as the tungsten market undergoes basic and lasting structural changes.

To better appreciate the problems associated with surface mining, it 1s imperative that the stripping operation be understood. Surface mining is a very broad term and refers to any process of removing the earth, rock, and other strata in order to uncover the underlying mineral or fuel deposit. Strip mining is a type of surface mining in which the overburden is removed in narrow bands, one cut at a time. Strip mining methods employed to recover coal can be divided into two general types: area and contour.

Sulphur dioxide is a versatile gas which has many uses throughout Pulp & Paper, Chemical, specialty Chemical, Mining and other industries. During recent years, S0 2 consumption and distribution patterns have resulted in renewed interests for liquid S0 2 and on site gaseous S02 manufacturing facilities. one relatively new use for S0 2 in the Mining Industry is its use for cyanide detoxification. Our purpose in this paper is to describe the process steps, economics and general technical features of so 2 gas generation using a Jet Type sulphur Burning System.

The expansion of a fluidized bed of carbon depends on fluid velocity, fluid temperature (viscosity) and particle size of the carbon. This paper presents a mathematical model which can be used to calculate the necessary fluid velocity. It will allow the design of sufficient freeboard in the column to accommodate expected operating conditions. Although this paper is keyed towards the use of activated carbon in precious metals adsorbtion from water solutions, the model is.valid with any fluid. Additionally, the method of calculating the required suspension velocity in CIL or CIP pulps is described.

Acid rock drainage (ARD) derived from sulphide oxidation and the associated metal leaching is the most significant environmental issue facing the mining industry today. Under given hydrological and biogeochemical conditions, the local geology and mineralogy largely control the formation of ARD. The involvement of a geologist is therefore essential in minesite ARD assessment and prevention. The relevant tasks that a mine geologist may undertake at three major phases of a mining project are briefly described. Additional knowledge that a mine geologist should acquire in order to achieve proficiency in ARD assessment is also suggested.

The paper addresses pipe flows of aqueous medium-sand slurries at velocities lower than the deposition-limit velocity. Laboratory test results including measurements of particle concentration distributions are used in order to describe a flow with a (pseudo-) linear concentration gradient above a stationary bed. Particle dispersion within the flow is evaluated and a stratification-ratio equation is formulated, estimating a portion of contact load in the flow. The formula is incorporated in the proposed predictive model for the hydraulic gradient for a medium-sand flow above a stationary bed.

The Argyle Diamond Mine is the first significant diamond producer in Australia. The project has been developed with new concepts in circuit design, process control technology, organisational development and training. After its first year of operation, the Argyle Heavy Medium Separation Plant has proven extremely efficient in recovering diamonds. Apart from cyclone wear, no major problems have been encountered. Ferrosilicon consumption is well below the design level which is a reflection of the sound design of the medium circuit. An Audit Plant continuously monitors the Heavy Medium Separation Plant tailings for diamond loss.

The common approach of designing blasts on a trial and error basis is quickly coming to an end. When utilizing the full scale blast environment, trial and error can quickly become cost prohibitive and leaves much to be desired in terms of true blast diagnostics. In these situations testing is usually only continued until a perceived improvement is achieved and when the gross undesirables in blast results are removed. This does does not preclude, however, that further improvements of up to 100% or more can not be obtained.

The effect of pretreatment potential on the response of a gold electrode for Eh measurements in sulfide solutions was examined in terms of measured Eh values and electrode response time. The electrode response time is defined as the time required for the electrode to reach a steady-state value. The relationship between measured Eh values and the hydrosulfide ion concentration is established. The effect of pH, the reversibility of the gold electrode in the sulfide solutions, and the reproducibility of measurements are also investigated. A mixed potential theory is proposed to explain the observations.

The Institute is represented on the boards of the John Fritz Medal, the Hoover Medal and the Washington Award, in connection with the three national societies of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering; and, also, in the case of the Washington Award, with the Western Society of Engineers. The Institute is represented with these four societies on the committee in charge of the Alfred Noble Prize.

The Port of Miami, Miami-Dade County, Florida (Port) is the largest container port in the State of Florida. However, it is located in the center of a diverse ecosystem. Biscayne Bay surrounds the Port and portions of the bay have been designated as a National Park, a Florida Aquatic Preserve and a state Critical Wildlife Area. The bay is home to many protected, threatened and endangered species including the Florida manatee, five sea turtle species, American crocodile and bottlenose dolphin, in addition to important recreational and commercial fish species.

In a letter to Prof. L. P. Breckenridge, chairman, urging the continua-tion of the Fuel Conservation Committee of the Engineering Council, Edwin Ludlow calls attention to the millions of tons of culm in the an-thracite region that can be utilized in properly equipped plants and the electricity generated transmitted to. New York, Philadelphia, and other nearby cities. He says: "Experiments have shown the economic value of No. 4 Buckwheat, which passes through a 1/16-in. mesh and over a 1/32-in. mesh. Culm passing through a 1/32-in- mesh is pulverized until it passes through a 300 mesh and is then burned under boilers. Two plants of this kind are now in successful operation in the anthracite region. Another rather interesting experiment was using 30 per cent. of this pulverized coal with 70 per cent. of oil in the generation of steam in the place of pure oil. This utilization of the fine anthracite, which has always been a waste product and thrown away, is not only fuel conservation in its truest sense but in the case of a bituminous strike, when no strike is contemplated in the anthracite field, will furnish fuel to manufacturing plants that otherwise would be obliged to shut down."

Gold ores in the geologically more recent rocks are often associated with copper minerals which pose problems of high reagent consumption with conventional cyanidation practice. Many examples exist in northern Australia, Indonesia, Papua­New Guinea, Chile, and Brazil where, despite various treatment options (LaBrooy, 1992), the processing of oxide and transition ores is uneconomic either for copper or gold recovery. Hence, there is a need for a reagent which is selective for gold without leaching copper minerals. The ammonia-cyanide system appears to meet this criterion (Muir et al, 1989; LaBrooy et al, 1991; Costello et al, 1992; Hayes and Corrans, 1992) but it has proven difficult to optimise and apply to a variety of ores due to differences in the mineralogy and reactivity of ores and a lack of understanding of how the system works. Recent work on the mechanism, however, (Muir et al, 1993) has thrown a new light on the problem which should allow better process control. Ammonia­cyanide mixtures behave neither like free cyanide nor free ammonia and too much of either reagent in the mixture is detrimental. The key to the process is understanding how ammonia enhances gold extraction yet inhibits copper extraction in an essentially cyanide environment.

R. U. Jackson (Conveyor vs. Track Haulage, P. 866) is the author of a previous work on conveyor systems, which was presented at the Annual Meeting of the Arizona Section of the AIME in December 1951. He has worked for the Carnegie Steel Co., Koppers Co., Fairmont Mining Machinery Co., and the Hewitt-Robins, Inc., the Robins Conveyor Div., for the past 30 years, as engineer, district manager, and manager of the mining div. Jackson is a graduate of Carnegie Institute of Technology, and was born in Steelton; Pa. His present residence is in Clifton, N. J., where in his spare time he devotes himself to hiking and photography interests. F. S. White (Co-author, Solids Fluidization Applied to Lime Burning, P. 903) is a Washington University, St. Louis, Graduate, who now lives in Stockbridge, Mass. He served as a technical apprentice at Mobile, Ala., for the Aluminum Ore Co., and after four years went to Bauxite, Ark, as technical superintendent of calcination and precipitation. After a year and a half, he became technical and operating superintendent of the sintering plant. White also worked for the Dorr Co., and is now with the New England Lime Co. serving as assistant to the president. For relaxation he collects stamps and plays the piano.

"Dalli mines of Bhilai Steel Plant, India is fully mechanized iron ore mine having wet processing system. It has a capacity to treat 5 Mt of ROM. In processing circuit of Dalli mines, scrubbing, wet screening and classification operation is being carried out. Average slime generation for the last five years is about 14% of ROM. As the mining has reached to the lower benches, fines generation is more. As a result, very fine and heavy particles, which settle fast, are being discarded with the slime to tailing pond. These heavy and faster settling particles were causing jamming in the thickeners.Laboratory investigations were carried out at Research and Development Centre for Iron and Steel (RDCIS) to suggest a suitable scheme to recover high quality fines so that the availability of thickener can improve. The slime samples were first treated in a floatex density separator. The concentrate obtained from the floatex density separator was treated in hydrocyclone. Laboratory investigations indicated that the slime with 49% Fe, 12.7% silica and 10.7% alumina can be upgraded to 62.1% Fe, 3.3% silica and 2% alumina with 36% material recovery. Based on the laboratory studies ,a system was installed at Dalli minesThe general arrangement of the system is shown in Fig. below."

The control of mine roof is of vital interest in underground coal mining not only for reasons of safety, but also to avoid the high costs of cleanup, resupport and production losses that can result from roof falls. The difficulty in determining roof stability mine-wide is due in large part to the broad variation of geologic and structural conditions that typically exist throughout a mining area. To ensure a stable roof over the entire mine, support systems must be selected to minimize the possibility of failure. The magnitude and cost of the support selected is a trade off against the cost of the number of falls that can still occur after it is installed. Because of the large number of variables involved in analyzing and optimizing roof stability versus support, a digital computer simulation was selected to find a cost effective solution to roof support design. A total cost approach is used which includes the actual cost of the roof support as well as the cost of the roof fall in terms of resupport and loss of production (Fraher 1990a). A Monte Carlo simulation program called ROCSIM (Roof control Optimization Cost SIMulation) has been developed for determining the optimum roof control system and design layout for underground room-and-pillar mining.

IN many ways, the Annual Meeting of the Institute in February was the most successful yet held. Attendance surpassed even that of the 75th Anniversary Meeting in 1947 with its international flavor. The number of technical sessions and the number and quality of papers presented almost certainly set a new record. The banquet was the best attended of any yet held even though the price reached a new high. Despite the demand for almost 1700 tickets to the banquet, some felt that the price-$13.50-was higher than they could afford. There are two points of view: One is that this is the big social event of the year for members and that it is worth from three to five dollars more to have it at the Waldorf and to have a luxury menu, as we did this year, with turtle soup, a fish course, guinea hen for the entree, and wild rice (which we understand is $3.50 per lb) for a vegetable. The other point of view is that a seven or eight dollar banquet of more simple food at the Commodore Hotel would more than make up in appeal, especially to the younger and less well-heeled members, what it would lack in glamour.

Charles T. Malcolmson, Chicago, Ill.:—Mr. Blauvelt's admirable paper is a valuable contribution to the literature on briquetting of coal in this country. It should have a special significance for those interested in the commercial development of the coal-briquette industry. I believe that the data included in Mr. Blauvelt's paper will be particularly useful because they represent costs taken from a briquette-plant in actual operation. There are several points touched on in Mr. Blauvelt's paper which may bear comment in the way of emphasis rather than of criticism. In the first place, he has stated a fact which becomes axiomatic to any one who has had any experience in the design, building, or operation of coal-briquette plants, and that is, that the press is only one factor in the successful opera-

The principal object of an underground coal mine transportation sys tem is to move coal from the face where it is produced to the outside of the mine where it is prepared for market. In addition to the movement of coal, a transportation system must also move supply materials to the inside; it must move men in and out of the mine ; and it must move rock and other debris out of the mine for disposal. Usually, mine haulage is divided into three categories named for the various areas of the mine served: 1) Face Haulage. This is used at face from the mining machine to the intermediate transport system. 2) Intermediate or Secondary Haulage. Generally this is used between face haulage and main haulage. Sometimes this is merely an extension of the main haulage. 3) Main Haulage. This extends from the secondary haulage to the outside and is usually either a track or conveyor system, sometimes a combination of both. Transportation modes of coal in the various areas pose different problems, but the whole system must be synchronized. For instance, at the face the coal should be removed quickly from the various places to facilitate the movement of machines, whereas the intermediate system just passes the same coal on to the main transportation system. Selection of the transportation system must be based on the seam height, mining methods used to extract the coal, capacity required, ease of coal handling, and haulage efficiency. When driving rooms, mine cars can be used. They often simplify supply haulage and rock handling because they can also handle these items. Conveyors could be used and would have a greater haulage capacity but they cannot handle supplies easily or segregate the rock. When using a different mining method, such as longwall, mine cars cannot be used because there is not sufficient space to move the cars at the face nor can the cars haul the coal without delays which would cause excessive losses in production.
