O silício bruto, também chamado de silício de grau metalúrgico, tem sido alvo de muitos estudos visando sua purificação a um nível suficiente para aplicações de energia solar por processos mais baratos do que o processo convencional, chamado Processo Siemens. Neste trabalho, 3 kg de silício de grau metalúrgico foram fundidos por plasma térmico numa atmosfera de vapor de água, hidrogênio e argônio. O teor de boro foi reduzido de 10 ppm para 0,09 ppm em 18.000s (5 horas), mostrando que o processo poderia ser uma alternativa viável ao processo tradicional por via química

Monolithic packing systems have gained in popularity as a gate side packing method. However, there has been no detailed investigation to assess their underground strength behaviour. This work includes the laboratory and in situ investigation for strength behaviour determined on various monolithic packing materials namely Tekpak-XX, Hydropak-20, Hydropak-30, Astrapak-3R, Flashpak, Thyssen pack and Aquablends. A simple technique for assessing the pack strength was developed at the laboratory by using a penetrometer, of which penetration resistance can be directly correlated with the uniaxial strength of the pack. The in situ strength investigations were made on core samples obtained from three pipes inserted inside the pack, while the penetration test were made on the pack surface. The in situ results indicated that the packing material develops an inconsistent strength on various part of the pack which was mainly related to an inadequate mixing of grouts inside the pack.

"At Opemiska Copper Mines we have, over the past four years, operated 300 cu. ft. and 700 cu. ft. flotation cells as roughers, scavengers and cleaners and found them competitive with conventional flotation cells on a cu. ft. basis on all phases of flotation.The economics are very much in favour of the large cells for the following reasons:Power consumption is 35 to 40%, of conventional machinesMaintenance cost is about 20 to 25% of conventional machinesSpace required is about 30 to 35% of conventional machinesInstallect cost is about 40%, of conventional machinesTo put the above in more concrete terms below is what we are doing at Opemiska:1. Increasing mill capacity from 2000 to 3000 T.P.D. and will use only 5Cff, of the flotation space for 3000 tons that we used for 2000 T.P.D. with conventional flotation machines.2. Will require only 10 flotation cells for 3000 tons against 85 conventional cells for 2000 tons.3. Cells will be, one 2000 cu. ft. rougher, six 700 cu. ft. scavengers (2 banks of 3 each) and one cleaning circuit using three 300 cu. ft. cells.You will note that in this 3000 ton per day plant, we are going to have only ten cells. Had we put in conventional cells for this tonnage, we would have needed 120 cells."

The Solution Mining review arrived too late to appear in the May issue. Solution mining, in its broadest definition, includes all forms of leaching where a lixiviant solution is brought into contact with a metalliferous or non-metallic ore and the resulting pregnant solution is processed for recovery of the valuable soluble material. Technologies such as dump leaching, heap leaching, stope washing and in situ lixiviant solution injection and recovery fit into this definition of solution mining. A publication entitled the US Gold Industry (Dobra and Thomas) reflects the major impact that solution mining techniques have had on precious metal recovery. In 1989 (the last year for which statistics are available), the United States passed Australia to become the third largest gold producing country in the world after South Africa and the Soviet Union. It is estimated that when the final figures are in for 1990, the US will probably pass the Soviet Union in gold output. If the state of Nevada is ranked as a separate country, it will rank fourth in the world in gold production for 1990. A good proportion of this increase in gold production over the past few years can be attributed to the application of solution mining technology to low-grade, precious-metal-bearing material. Solution mining techniques have also made inroads in copper production. Many operations located at former underground mine sites employ in situ leaching as an adjunct to conventional dump and heap leaching practices.

"The cost effective and sustainable production of high purity rare earth elements is still challenging. The most commonly used method, known as solvent extraction, is very complex, needs many steps to separate the rare earth ions in a high purity, and causes a lot of environmental problems. An alternative method is the utilization of a separation column filled with adsorbent material. Within the column the desired target substance can be selectively separated out of a multi component mixture in one step. To find out if an adsorption material is suitable for the separation with a column, a characterization of the adsorbent material is necessary. In this paper are described the usage of modified activated carbon (oxygen and phosphorous modification), Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) impregnated Amberlite® XAD 7 HP and Lewatit® VPOC 1026 as adsorption materials. Several adsorption isotherms and process conditions are determined to characterize the selectivity between the adsorption materials and different rare earth ions. With these isotherms the mass specific rare earth ion retention for the adsorbent materials can be calculated. In addition to the isotherms the best working parameters are investigated e.g. pH-value and the time for equilibration. Finally, the separation factors between two rare earth elements are determined. The separation factor shows how successful a two element system can be separated."

A steadily growing body of evidence indicates that earthquake ground motions can cause failure of rock slopes that are otherwise stable under static loading conditions. As a result, the economic optimum working slope angle is reduced when earthquake shaking is considered in surface mine design, especially in regions of high seismicity. When designing surface mine slopes to withstand seismic motion it is as important to consider the probability of experiencing various levels of ground shaking as it is to consider the characteristics of the ground motion. For most slope designs, simple probabilistic techniques such as extreme value or maximum likelihood techniques are appropriate. These techniques, however, should be applied in such a way that a probability value is assigned to characteristic ground motion parameters at the mine rather than to nearby earthquake magnitudes. Several techniques have been developed to analyze rock slopes subjected to dynamic loads. Most of these techniques do not adequately account for the ground motion parameters of concern. The best technique appears to be one that utilizes actual earthquake time histories. A simple technique that calculates block displacement for any input accelerogram, using a linear acceleration approximation between time steps, has been developed that accurately accounts for rock block response. Results using this technique indicate that the following factors are important for assessing rock slope stability in earthquake regions:

THE trend in modern building construction is definitely toward the use of weight-reducing materials. The basic advantage of lighter structural weight is obvious; reduction of dead load with retention of equivalent strength affords the possibility of increasing the live load, or if this is not desirable or necessary it makes feasible a reduction in size of structural steel members and corresponding savings in other phases of construction. Among the weight-reducing materials and practices rapidly gaining favor are the use of light-weight patented insulating board to replace back-up tile or units, particularly in home construction; introduction of aluminum alloys to replace steel for many purposes; manufacture of porous brick, the use of which materially reduces the weight of masonry walls and partitions; and the use of self-rising vesicular concrete, diatomite and sawdust tile, porous gypsum, or gypsum tile for nonload-bearing partitions and walls. Even building accessories are being designed to save weight and space; one of the most striking examples of this is improved radiator construction. Concrete technique is keeping pace with the rest of the industry. Burned shale aggregates now available in many sections of the country will make concrete weighing only 100 lb. per cubic foot, saving roughly 35 per cent. in weight and sacrificing none of the strength of a rock-sand mix. It may be more expensive, but actual experience has shown that the saving in dead load will effect a reduction in structural steel which in many instances will more than offset the increased cost of the aggregate. The vesicular nature of most light-weight aggregates gives the concrete especially good insulating, fireproofing and soundproofing properties; yet absorption is comparatively low. Strangely enough, however, the increased use of light-weight aggregates appears to have augmented the demand for ordinary aggregates in concrete construction rather than to have decreased it. Light-weight aggregates have widened the field for concrete structures and, since the producers do not attempt to recommend the use of their material except where weight or other special properties are important factors, impetus- has been given to sales of other aggregates.

The increased interest on deep water minerals resources is a challenge for both mining and oil industry. The exploration and production of oceans minerals require a synergy between of different technologies. While mining industry is leading the dredging and processing part of the system, oil industry is contributing through development of ore lifting technology based on existing subsea knowledge. The paper presents an overview, based on published projects around the world, of different approaches to marine mining. Several exploration techniques and offshore production systems were already designed and assessed, all of them with apparently positive results. Exploration phase is well advanced and in continuous expansion allowing the discovery of increasing resources around the world of different nature but production can be considered to be in an early stage. Different from onshore mining, subsea operations require a closer cooperation with international and local authorities to preserve as much as possible the environment. There are still many uncertainties at respect and all the exploration process must be carefully evaluated to allow subsea mining to develop in a sustainable manner. Technically, mining at seabed was already demonstrated and the process is based on three main components, namely seafloor mining tools, riser and lifting system and production vessel support. This layout is based on the concept that ore must be disaggregated at seafloor first, transported to surface in form of slurry that must be dewatered before loading to be transported to processing plants onshore. The challenges are rising because the environment and safety must be taken into consideration as a priority when evaluating the efficiency of the system. Convential smelting of copper - cobalt - iron sulphide concentrates result in th eoxidation of cobalt and iron, which are subsequently lost into the slag. The emission of SO2 bearing gas from smelting causes serious health and environmentsl problems. In this investigation, three different types of copper - cobalt - iron sulphide concentrates, derived from froth flotation, were investigated, the concentrates, each containing more than 40 wt % percent gangue material, were directly reduced in the presence of lime and corbonin the temperature rnage of 1073 K - 1573 K, fo rthe production of an alloy containing copper, cobalt and iron. We demonstrate the basic principles of process physical chemistry for the recovery of alloy by carrying out a detailed process analysis utilising the predictions from thermodynamic equilibrium and results from the kinetics of reduction reaction. The effect of temperature on the reduction kinetics and alloy formation were determinedand analyzed in detail.

Mr G. Y. Nisbet, Pr. Eng., holds a B.sc. (Min.) from the University of the Witwatersrand (1948) and a P.M.D. from Harvard University, U.S.A. (1966). On graduating, he was awarded the Chamber of Mines' Gold Medal. Professor D. G. Krige, holds a D.Sc. (Eng.) from the University of the Witwatersrand (1963) and a D.Ing. (H.C.) from the University of Pretoria (1981). Dr P. T. Wedepohl holds a B.Sc. (Hons.) from the University of the Witwatersrand (1953) and a Ph.D. from the University of Reading, England (1958).

Under the joint auspices of the Illuminating Engineering Society and the University of Pennsylvania there will be given about 20 lectures covering the general principles of illumination and the aspects of lighting practice. They will be held at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, from Sept. 21 to 28, 1916, inclusive. The subject of illumination of mines will be included in this series, which will be delivered by men selected on account of their qualifications to deal authoritatively with the several phases of the subject. In connection with the lectures there will be an exhibition of the latest developments in illuminating appliances, including lamps, accessories, photometers, together with novel applications of light. There will also be an inspection tour which will include visits to manufacturing establishments, laboratories, lighting companies and notable lighting installations. A rotary chambered blasthole technique has initially indicated a 30% overall improvement in drill and blast department productivity. The method, developed at several open pit copper mines in Arizona, centers around a chambering tool that can be used with existing high-speed rotary drills. The "Chamber Maker," manufactured by the Servco Div. of Smith International, Inc., produces an enlarged section or chamber near the bottom of a large diameter blasthole (Fig. 1). This enlarged cavity permits a greater concentration of explosives at the bottom of the blasthole, resulting in better fragmentation and reduced hard toe problems, and also lowers the number of blastholes required to break a bench area, says Servco's Gerald W. Laswell. Cost savings can therefore be achieved in reduced secondary blasting requirements, increased shovel efficiency, and subsequently, less shovel maintenance. All these factors would serve to lower the overall mine cost per ton figure

While the Andean belt of Chile contains porphyry copper deposits of considerable economic importance, only one major and several minor deposits of this type have been discovered in neighboring Argentina. There are no obvious geologic reasons for the country's apparent paucity of important porphyry copper deposits. Instead, a lack of exploration because of poor accessibility and past inadequate mining legislation may partly account for this situation. Western Argentina has porphyry copper prospects ranging in age from late Paleozoic to Pliocene. Many of these prospects have host rock and alteration characteristics that are very similar to those of large Chilean deposits. The economic potential of many of these prospects has not been tested adequately by geoehemical, geophysical, or chilling programs. A recently enacted mining promotion law and updated mining code removes some past exploration obstacles in Argentina, and makes in-depth exploration and evaluation of' the county's porphyry copper potential attractive.

Many technical challenges were encountered while conducting near-field construction blasting between the critical intersection of Interstate 10 and multiple active railroad tracks in El Paso, Texas, for the Loop 375 Border West Expressway Project. Blasting was utilized for the removal of an andesite bedrock ridge in preparation for the construction of a new elevated super structure to be suspended over the existing railroad tracks. There was concern that the excessive vibrations and/or permanent rock deformation produced from the blasting within near proximity (20 feet, or 6.09 meters) of the railroad tracks would induce excessive stress and foul the tracks by shifting the alignment. This could result in a major loss of scheduling control between the two major railroad companies that operate in this area. In the past, mine management has been concerned with removing water from active mining sections primarily because it hampered the movement of mining equipment and aggravated the working condition of the miners. Pumping water to sumps and gravity drainage by ditching have proven successful in mines for minimizing section down time due to water influx. However, with the advent of more strict pollution laws the mining engineer must now be concerned with keeping water out of the section and also with preventing it from causing pollution. A review of the handbooks and textbooks used in the mining engineering curricula reveals that little has been written concerning acid mine water prevention or control in underground coal mines. Additionally, the review of the curricula of mining schools indicates they are not teaching the engineering students the necessary techniques of mine water management as they relate to the abatement of mine water pollution.

In the first half of 1987 two four metre diameter raise bore holes were drilled at the Olympic Dam Project for ventilation purposes. The first hole, 476 m x 4.0 m diameter was completed in 96 days, 35 days longer than scheduled. The second hole, 407 m x 4.0 m diameter was completed in 39 days, 2 days ahead of schedule. Both holes were drilled with a Robbins 121R rig using a Wirth head that consisted of 23 face cutters and 5 side cutters, supplied by a contractor. After the sites were located a grouting program was carried out to help seal off an aquifer between 160 and 180 m below the surface. Cavities discovered in the Andamooka Limestone were filled with concrete. Because of the overlying dune sands and clay both sites were pre-sunk to the competent Andamooka Limestone.

New York was bathed in pale winter sunshine and, surprisingly, coatless weather. The time was the AIME Centennial and 100th Annual Meeting. From advance peeks into the fabulous schedule of events we were well aware that the Centennial Committee, New York Host Section and AIME staff' had pulled out all the stops, laying on the best of everything, but the weather gimmick was the frosting on the cake. The Formal Greetings Session on the first morning, Joe Alford confided, was the greatest AIME experience of his life. Without doubt the honor bestowed on AIME by the greetings and felicitations of the presidents of the world's leading professional engineering societies was the greatest moment in AIME history-save one. That one exception was in 1928, when 1920 AIME President Herbert C. Hoover was elected President of the United States.

New data on the geology of the Late Jurassic to Holocene sediments cover of the World and associated mineral resources (oil, gas, ferromanganese nodules, ores of massive sulphides and other metals) have been compilled in the Atlas at scale 1:25,000,000 and 1:10,000,000. The work was performed by scientists from four Institutes of Russia (VNllzarubezhgeologia, VNlloceangeologia, Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences). The Atlas shows variation of thickness and formational composition of the large complexes (Upper Jurassic-Early Cretaceous, Upper Cretaceous- Eocene, Oligocene-Neogene, Pliocene-Pleistocene), distribution of oil/gas and ore deposits in each complex, data of deep- sea drilling (leg 1-130), thermo-pressure condition in the sedimentary basins within Circum-Pacific Rim.
