This report describes a process for tungsten recovery from Searles Lake brines and upgrading its concentration to useful levels. The method consists of a combination of a liquid-solid and liquid-liquid extraction step and results in a product stream containing more than l00g W03/1. This technique is also effective in substantially reducing the concentration of objectionable impurities in the tungsten product. An ion exchange extraction mechanism is postulated.

Tuzla Coal Basin in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the largest coal area in the State. Regional mining industry sensed the need for mining machinery database development in order to achieve easier planning purposes and equipment selection for open cast mines in Tuzla Coal Basin. Several databases for mining machinery used on the bituminous deposits, i.e. on brown coal and lignite mines, were developed at the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Civil Engineering, Tuzla. System Development Method was used as the approach to the database development, generating relational structure of database. First database was established for trucks and was presented as simple table, drawn and filled on the paper sheet. In the next phase, data were stored in spreadsheet type software (Quattro Pro and Excel). Lately developed database is Bucket Wheel Excavator database designed in MS Access. Two concepts, spreadsheet and Access, were integrated into one large database, enabling manipulation of hundreds of data at one place. Required adaptations of existing database in MS Access, enables Access to be used as an integration resource. Database is designed to reserve free memory for input data for mining equipment not considered so far, such as spreaders, crushers, belt conveyors, tripper cars, etc. New, integrated database, at this stage, can be imported to any type of commercial or individual software where needed. Although coal is found in several locations in Virginia, almost all recent mining has occurred in the southwestern part of the state. Potentially minable reserves are estimated at 2.6 billion tons, slightly less than one percent of the national total. Coal ranges from high- to low-volatile bituminous, and seams average three to four feet in thickness. Virginia produces coal with higher BTUs (British Thermal Units) and a lower sulfur content than the national average. Historically its high quality has made Virginia coal attractive for metallurgical coke production and for the export market. Coal production and related industries have a significant economic impact in southwestern Virginia. In the seven coal- producing counties, coal mining is the major industry. In the two largest coal-producing counties (Buchanan and Wise), over 40 percent of total earning is derived from the coal industry. Virginia's regulatory program was conditionally approved December 15,198 1, and received final approval May 8, 1984. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved with the regulatory program December 15, 1981, with emergency program authority approved November 13,1987.

After surveying the beneficiation techniques in the Florida phosphate field, it is apparent that optimum beneficiation of this ore is a difficult task. Due to continually changing grade, size distribution and basic nature of the ore, there appears to be no universal technique nor a single reagent entirely satisfactory for achieving optimum metallurgy under these dynamic conditions. Although no major change in the basic flow sheet has been made in the last 20 years, there have been many refinements of the process in recent years which have helped increase production, improve recovery, lower unit cost of operation and make the beneficiation of lower grade deposits economically feasible. Among the significant changes is the use of larger plants and equipment which has helped to increase production significantly. The use of cyclones has facilitated and reduced the cost of slimes removal in these large plants. There have also been several new approaches to the flotation of coarse phosphate that are mentioned in the text of this paper. Lastly, significant improvements have also taken place in the area of flotation reagents.

There is considerable variation in the types of coal flotation circuits in use in various parts of the world. For example, Russian plants frequently use scavenger flotation, while this is almost unheard of in the United States. The numerous circuit designs are intended to address specific problems in coal flotation, or to take advantage of the peculiarities of certain coal deposits. As a result, it can be difficult to decide which circuit is best for a given application. For this paper, coal flotation circuits were collected worldwide from many operating plants. These circuits include varying degrees of conditioning, and complexity ranging from simple rougher flotation to multi-stage split- stream processing. The design goals of each circuit are described, and the advantages and disadvantages of each are discussed. Extensive sampling campaigns were carried out in two plants with the most common types of coal flotation circuit (simple rougher, and rougher with deslimed feed). The performance of each plant was evaluated, and the benefits of more sophisticated processing in each case are described.

The coal industry was beset with work stoppages and strikes throughout the year, and there was some loss in markets to oil and gas. These conditions, along with the mild decline in industrial activity, the steel strike, and the reduction in exports, contributed to an unfavorable year for the industry. All coal mines are working three days a week at the time of writing, and in estimating production for the year, it will be assumed that the mines will continue to work on that basis through December. Total production of bituminous coal in 1949 is estimated at 420 million tons, which is 179,518,229 tons under the production in 1948. Anthracite production is expected to reach 39,400,000 tons as compared with 57,139,948 tolls in 1948, a loss of 17,739,948 tons. Coal stocks, as of January 1, 1949, were 69,373,000 tons but at the end of the year will have dropped to approximately 22 million tons. The McArthur lead-zinc-silver deposit is of the stratiform type. It consists essentially of a mineralized bituminous shale sequence that incorporates tuffites, numerous graded beds, and isolated but massive slump breccia horizons.The principal sulphides are' pyrite, sphalerite, and galena. These occur mostly in the shales. The accompanying turbidites contain only minor mineralization.The geochemistry of the deposit has been investigated in relation to the stratigraphic column and mineralogy of the sediments.A sedimentary origin is proposed for the deposit. Volcanism, thermal spring activity, salinity, regional faulting, and climate are examined as possible factors that may have contributed to sulphide formation and which could be used as criteria for mineral exploration.The metallurgy 'of the McArthur deposit is discussed in terms of its geological history.

Arsenical ores may be either leached directly, or first smelted to volatilize as much arsenic and sulfur as possible, and the resulting product, called speiss, is then leached. In past attempts to characterize green and dry iron ore pellets, the authors have found large variations in the results of strength tests performed on closely sized pellets from the same batch. Where bentonite was the binder, such variations in the pellet quality were attributed to the presence of internal flaws and the nonuniform distribution of the binder. Studies have shown that pellet strength is strongly dependent on the degree of "mixedness" of the iron ore concentrate and the bentonite binder. However, before such a relationship can serve as a guide for the development of better mixing techniques and the associated economy of bentonite consumption, more precise knowledge of the bentonite-concentrate mixtures is needed. A few months ago I had the honor of addressing the Society of Mining Engineers annual banquet in Sun Francisco. I have since been asked to amplify some of the remarks I made at that time concerning the management policies of the Kaiser organization and various aspects of our corporate thinking. This is a difficult task for an insider like myself. I look at the different companies, and the men who run them, and it is hard to think of these men in terms of policy or procedure. Actually I prefer the term management philosophy to either policy or procedure. My father, Henry J. Kaiser, is not only the founder but the guiding spirit of our organization. His philosophy, and in turn that of the organization, centers around two concepts, service and accomplishment.

At the last Comminution Symposium a challenge (Meloy and Williams, 1992) was issued to "predict the typical straight-line, self similar" tumbling mill product size distributions using a population balance model (PBM). Implicit in this challenge is the assumption that the PBM is inadequate for predicting real world grinding performance. This response is presented in three parts: I. Theoretical analysis of the general PBM and its appropriateness for comminution system modeling. II. Examination of the accuracy of prediction of real world milling behavior using linear and nonlinear PBMs. III. Evidence from recent microscale comminution research. This paper concludes with recommendations concerning future research which will: 1. further elucidate mechanisms of particle destruction and creation as well as attrition and 2. increase the accuracy of model predictions in highly nonlinear situations

The purpose of this paper is to investigate commonly used methods for mitigating the effects of shrapnel from linear shape charges (LSC) used in the demolition industry. Primarily the problem is not that shrapnel poses a threat to human bystanders, but rather it can affect the other charges in the demolition or damage to structures in close proximity to the charges. This research aims to determine what methods have success at stopping shrapnel, what methods do not, and to promote an awareness of the dangers of using the LSC without any protection. The project was carried out at the Experimental Mine site at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. This research is an undergraduate research project to fulfill the requirements for the Explosives Engineering minor program at MST.

This presentation is to outline the current practice of mechanised stoping a one-metre wide, gold bearing ore body to optimise fragmentation, minimise dilution and reduce stoping costs.Coolgardie underground operations have historically been mined using traditional shrink stope methods, but in this recent economic environment (with falling gold prices and high costs of traditional methods) it was necessary to look for alternative methods in order to reduce costs and increase productivity.Although still in a learning and refinement phase, CGNL is satisfied that it is feasible, practical and more economic to use mechanised long up-hole stope and long-hole rising methods to significantly reduce the mining cost, reduce dilution, increase safety and increase productivity three-fold compared to traditional airleg methods used throughout the Fasten Goldfields.

The Ringelmann Smoke Chart fulfills an important need in smoke abatement work and in certain problems in the combustion of fuels. A knowledge of its history and method of preparation is, therefore, of interest to many. Since instructions on its use are not shown on the recent edition of the chart, those included in this revision of the previous Bureau of Mines publication now are a necessary complement to the chart. More detail regarding the use of the chart is included than was given in the earlier version.

Blasting is a very cost effective method of rock fragmentation but its uncontrolled application often results in excessive damage to the perimeter of an excavation. Several perimeter control techniques are available but tracer blasting is commonly used in Canadian underground mines for overbreak control. This involves tracing a column of Ammonium Nitrate-Fuel Oil (ANFO) with a detonating cord. In order to investigate the techno-economic effectiveness of tracer blasting in perimeter control, a field experimentation was conducted which involved blasting in sublevel caving and sublevel sloping operations, experimental drifting, benching and pipe tests.

Many hydrated silicates have been synthesized and sold for commercial use. However, this paper discusses only hydrated calcium silicates and, to a lesser extent, hydrated magnesium silicates. Synthetic calcium silicates were first formed by man when he found that mixtures of silica or silicates and lime in water set up to form cements. The material which was responsible for the cementing properties was calcium silicate hydrate, although this fact was not recognized until early in this century. In the early 19001s, synthetic calcium silicates, reinforced with fibers and formed simply by reacting calcium hydroxide and silica in water with fiber at atmospheric or under low pressure autoclave conditions, found increased use in thermal insulations and in building products. These insulations were found to have a low thermal conductivity and would withstand temperatures up to 650°C. This, combined with their very low densities (from 8 to 50 Ib per cu ft) and fairly high strength, also made them suitable for use as building products. Following the disastrous Morro Castle fire of the 1930Js, calcium silicate board products were used as partitioning material in all shipboard construction in the U.S. As autoclaving techniques were improved and developed, it was: learned that under hydrothermal conditions new and useful calcium silicates which could be used under more extreme temperatures (up to 980' C) could be prepared. These had high surface areas and other unique properties which suited them for use as fillers, pesticide carriers, low temperature insulating materials, and adsorbents for the removal of fatty acids from various solutions. Hydrated magnesium silicates have not been studied as extensively as the calcium compounds. Their first important use was in the filtration of dry cleaning solutions for the removal of fatty acids. With the introduction of detergents, it was found that these products lost their advantage because of their high affinity for the detergent chemicals. However, in recent years these chemicals are finding increasing use as decolorizing agents for fats and anti-caking agents for resins. Some materials with very high surface are finding new use as adsorbents. CALCIUM SILICATE HYDRATE COMPOUNDS AND THElR CONDITIONS OF FORMATION Within the past ten years much has been done in the field of calcium silicate hydrate chemistry. As a result of this work it has been found that at least 25 different forms of calcium silicate hydrate can either be formed synthetically or found as naturally occurring materials.
