The optimum flow of materials through a smelter is an extremely important phase of the mining cycle. A typical copper smelter will have up to $US 1,000,000 per day of copper being processed. The motion of the overhead cranes in moving the ladles filled with copper matte and slag from furnace to furnace is prescribed but there can be numerous variables to consider. Some of these variables to the system can be: the speed of the overhead cranes, the number of cranes, the size of the ladles, the size of the furnaces, the number of furnaces and the sequence in loading the furnaces. A simulation model was constructed of a working smelter in the SW of the United States. The model has been used to study the effect of varying parameters of the system. The program runs as follows: an input menu appears on the PC screen and the user can navigate through it and change any of the data; the simulation takes place and the results of the simulation sent to a data file. Animation of the system then is shown on the screen in "cartoon" fashion. The software chosen for the simulation was GPSSI H (') and PROOF Professional (') for the animation. The model presented here is believed to be the first reported simulation and animation model for a complete, working smelter.

BORAX, a sodium borate and the principal sodium salt of boric acid, has been surrounded with romance and with a certain amount of mystery. Its early history is not entirely known but it has been contended that Marco Polo in his travels in the Orient introduced this material to the West during the Middle Ages. Without doubt its first source was from Central or Eastern Asia and perhaps from Tibet. The well-known fluxing properties of borax probably introduced its earliest use that of a soldering flux in the manufacture of jewelry. This use, as well as the remote location of most borate deposits, added greatly to the romance associated with the thought of borax. COMPOSITION The common element in all borates is boron but this element has never been discovered as such in any deposit, because of its great affinity for oxygen. Incidentally, this makes its manufacture extremely difficult and expensive. Elemental boron undoubtedly has many properties that make it quite valuable but the extreme cost involved in producing it from its oxidized form prevents its general use or manufacture. The common element in all borates is boron but this element has never been discovered as such in any deposit, because of its great affinity for oxygen. Incidentally, this makes its manufacture extremely difficult and expensive. Elemental boron undoubtedly has many properties that make it quite valuable but the extreme cost involved in producing it from its oxidized form prevents its general use or manufacture. Iron and steel lire subjects that will receive the attention clue them at the meeting in. St. Louis. Within the past 2 years the smelting of iron ore on a large scale has been started in the St. Louis area, and the blast furnaces are in full operation. Ore is being received. from the Lake Superior region, in large barges .brought clown the Mississippi River. Firebrick, for the lining of the furnaces, is made in the. St. Louis district to a greater extent than elsewhere in the country. At this meeting, there will probably be a discussion of the possibilities of the increase of manganese production in this country, and of improved methods of using it in steel manufacture.

This study initiated to explore the potential of commercial chelating extractant for beneficiation of minerals revealed "LIX "65N to be an excellent collector for cuprite and chrysocolla. The collector action of the LIX is proposed to result from its chelation with copper species on the surface of the minerals. Thus, the syn-isomer of LIX65N, which is unable to form a chelate with copper ions, failed also to act as a collector. The proposed mechanism takes into account partitioning of LIX between the mineral surface (to form a surface chelate) and the copper chelate dispersed in the bulk aqueous phase (either due to formation of the chelate with dissolved copper, or due to detachment of chelate formed at surface). The efficiency of the collection is dependent upon this partitioning since the bulk chelate is found unable to collect. The marked decrease in flotation obtained when copper was added to the system supports this mechanism. The dependence of flotation of chrysocolla and cuprite on pH and reagentizing time is discussed on the basis of the proposed mechanism. Batch laboratory flotation tests using synthetic mixtures of oxide, sulfide and mixed oxide-sulfide copper minerals with quartz demonstrated the ability of LIX to separate the copper minerals from quartz.

THE reclaiming of metallics from slag and sweepings is of vital interest to every brass-foundry man, but the first cost and interest on the investment often make it prohibitive for the small foundry to enjoy the benefits of a complete concentrating unit. However, the cost of such an installation and the cost of operation are often exaggerated to such an extent that foundries dispose of their copper-bearing refuse at a great loss. This paper gives the actual costs and the returns obtained in the reclaiming plant used at the Ohio Brass Co. This plant is divided into two sections, the preliminary treatment and concentrating departments. In the former occur the screening, crushing, and hand-picking operations whereby most of the non-valuable and heavy metallic constituents are removed. The concentrating equipment consists of an elevator, bins, jigs, ball-mill, and table. PRELIMINARY TREATMENT The preliminary treatment varies, depending on whether the material is slag, foundry-floor sweepings, or brass casting-floor sweepings. Material of the first class is produced from the operation of six Steele-Harvey and six Schwartz furnaces; the second class represents sweepings from an average of thirty-five molding floors per day; and the last is collected around the sprue cutters. and knockout bench.

No presente trabalho, poli (tereftalato de etileno) virgem (PETV) e pós-consumo (PETPC) foram aditivados com um oligômero multifuncional estirênico-acrílico-epóxi (Joncryl POLYAD PR 002) comercializado como extensor de cadeia para polímeros de condensação como o PET, visando avaliar o comportamento da massa molar destes polímeros durante o processamento. PETV e PETPC, com e sem a incorporação do aditivo, foram preparados em misturador interno Haake Rheomix, com rotores tipo roller, empregando diferentes níveis do extensor de cadeia. As massas molares foram estimadas a partir de medições de torque e temperatura. Os resultados mostram que as estimativas com base em medições de torque em tempo real foi um indicador rápido e preciso da eficácia da extensão da cadeia do PET. O aditivo extensor de cadeia compensou a perda de massa molar durante o processamento, o efeito foi afetado pelo nível de aditivo presente.

A detailed mineralogical study was carried out to characterize the products generated in a conventional copper refinery anode slimes treatment circuit. The anode slimes, which are first leached in sulphuric acid media under an oxygen pressure to dissolve the copper and much of the tellurium, were found to contain various Ag-Cu selenides, PbSO4, Ag, Au and BaSO4. The resulting Ag2Se, Ag3AuSe2, Se, Au, PbSO4, BaSO4, SnO2 and silicate-rich leach residue is dried and pelletized. It is subsequently roasted to convert the selenium to Ag2SeO3, volatile SeO2 and water soluble Na2SeO4. The roasted product, which was found to consist of Ag2Se, PbSe, PbSO4, BaSO4, Ag3AuSe2, Au and Sn02, is smelted and refined in a Dore furnace to produce a Dore metal that contains a (Ag,Au,Pd,Cu,Pt) alloy together with traces of CuO and a Cu-Pb oxide phase. Parting plant mud shown to contain AgC1, Ag, Au, (Au,Ag,Pd), Ag2Cu2O3 and Ag20, and scrubber mud containing PbSO4 and AgC1 are also fed to the Dore furnace. The Dore furnace sequentially separates a silica slag which was found to consist of Ag, Sn02, BaSO4, Pb-Sb oxide, Fe-Sb-Ni-Cr oxide and a Pb-rich silicate phase, a soda-rich slag containing Na2CO3.H2O and Na2(Se,Te)03, and a niter slag containing Na2TeO3, Na2(Se,Te)03 and a Na-Te-Se-Pb-Ba-Cu oxide phase. The Dore metal is electrorefined in Moebius cells to yield high-purity silver and a gold mud which was shown to consist of a (Au,Ag,Pd,Cu,Pt) alloy and traces of CuO. Silver is leached from the gold mud and the resulting gold sand is cast into anodes and electrorefined in Wohlwill cells to produce pure gold.

INTRODUCTION In recent times the continuing depletion of high grade mineral deposits and the massive increase in raw material consumption have forced the metal mining industry to exploit ore bodies of lower and lower grades. To obtain a satisfactory financial return from these deposits, there has been the concurrent and evident trend towards increasing the size of operations to obtain benefits from the economies of scale. The evaluation, planning, and design of these large scale open-pit operations, so as to yield the maximum possible return on investment, is an extremely complex, iterative procedure. With profit margins trimmed, "small" errors can become much more significant and with exploration costs spiralling, accurate and rapid evaluation is essential. It demands a sophistication and precision in the evaluation process unheard of ten years ago. What follows attempts to describe the need to thoroughly plan the overall evaluation programme such that duplication of effort is avoided and all relevant information is systematically recorded from the outset of exploration. The final section of the paper takes a realistic case study to illustrate the significance of pit slope angles on the design of the final pit and the economics of the total project. THE EVALUATION PROGRAMME The team, (for a team effort it must be), that is charged with the responsibility of conducting the evaluation exercise, has the difficult task of placing values on a multitude of independent and inter-related variables. Each variable has some economic significance; the degree of significance varying according to the metal sought, the environment in which it occurs, the vagaries of the market place, to name but a few of the problems facing the project team. From this maze of variables, the team must identify those that have the most critical influence on the overall economics of the proposed venture. Investigations must then be set in motion to quantify these controlling factors more precisely. It is important to recognize that such investigations form part of the evaluation programme and require monitoring for both timing and cost as the whole exercise of evaluating the project continues. To add to the difficulties, the economic significance of any particular variable may change during the course of the programme.

The Quesnell-Stikine arcs, in the Canadian Cordillera, are host to Triassic and Early Jurassic alkalic porphyry Cu-Au and calc-alkalic porphyry Cu-(Mo-Au) deposits formed outboard of ancestralNorth America in island-arc tectonic settings (McMillan, 1991). The majority of the alkalic porphyry Cu-Au deposits are products of a discrete magmatic event at the end of the Triassic, with a second and smaller event in the Early Jurassic (Mortensen, Ghosh and Ferri, 1995). Of the Triassic complexes, the Galore Creek alkalic intrusive suite is one of the largest and most silica-undersaturated intrusive complexes, and host to the most significant undeveloped alkalic porphyry Cu-Au resource in North America (Lang, Stanley and Thompson, 1995). Because of the common presence of feldspathoidal-bearing rocks in the complex (Enns et al, 1995), Galore Creek likely represents an end member example of the alkalic porphyry Cu-Au class. The Galore Creek alkalic Cu-Au-Ag porphyry district, located in NW British Columbia (Canada), contains 12 mineralised prospects (Enns et al, 1995; Micko et al, 2007; Schwab et al, in press) with a total measured and indicated resources of 785.7 Mt at 0.52 per cent Cu, 0.29 g/t Au and 4.87 g/t Ag (NovaGold Resources Inc, February, 2008). The Central Zone is the largest and best delineated. Other economically important mineralised centres include the South-West, Bountiful, West Fork and Junction deposits. The South-West Zone, the focus of this contribution, is a Cu-Au-Ag breccia-centred deposit with a measured and indicated resource of 69 Mt grading 0.42 per cent Cu, 0.69 g/t Au, 2.67 g/t Ag. Hosted in brecciated intrusive rocks, the South-West Zone is distinctly younger than the Central Zone and most of the other mineralised centres (Enns et al, 1995; Schwab et al, in press). The South-West Zone therefore preserves the late stages of hydrothermal evolution at Galore Creek. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. No processo de produção de ferro e aço, uma grande quantidade de resíduos é gerada. Esses resíduos e coprodutos contêm consideráveis quantidades de ferro e carbono, que podem ser reaproveitados, ajudando a reduzir a poluição ambiental que pode surgir devido ao descarte inadequado. Este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar o potencial energético contido em um resíduo siderúrgico, quando misturado à biomassa. Por meio de análise termogravimétrica e cinética (método Coats – Redfern) amostras com diferentes proporções de resíduo metalúrgico, biomassa de capim elefante e carvão vegetal foram estudadas. A amostra com menor tamanho de grão e maior quantidade de resíduo foi a que apresentou melhor perda de massa ao final do experimento, apesar de não ter apresentado o melhor resultado antes da faixa isotérmica do experimento. Contudo, a quantidade de capim elefante se mostrou relevante na performance da queima.

This paper will discuss the application of a continuous miner using a fixed drum milling type cutting head for the underground mining of hard rock and salt ores. Continuous mining machines of the ripper chain cutting head, oscillating milling cutting head and boring arm designs have been used in rock and salt applications with various degrees of success. The large boring arm miners have been successful in potash, trona and salt, but they have not been successful in mining rock materials like iron ore. The main method used in underground mining rock materials is the conventional drilling and blasting the ore from the solid. This is particularly true for the harder, more abrasive copper and iron bearing ores. The softer salt based ores of potash, trona and rock salt can use several underground mining methods depending on seam conditions. Several of these methods use underground coal mining equipment that has been extensively redesigned to adapt it for use in mining noncoal materials. Conventional mining methods employ the use of a universal cutting machine to undercut or topcut the ore body before face drilling and blasting takes place to produce a smooth parting of the ore. The boring arm continuous miner is widely used in underground mining of potash and trona ores. It produces a tunnel with a smooth semicircular contour which results in good rib and roof stability. The ripper chain continuous miner is also widely used in mining the salt based ores of potash, trona and rock salt. They are used more frequently in Europe than in the United States and Canada. Platinum production in Southern Africa amounted to 80% of world production in 2005with a small increase from 5 117 000 ounces to 5 275 000 ounces. For the seventh consecutive year the platinum market is on course to record a moderate deficit in supply. This is reflected in the price increase from a trading range US$860 to US$880 in June 2005 to an excess of US$1 200 in September 2006. Southern Africa, with its extensive platinum reserves, will continue to be the dominant platinum producer and has a number of new mines in an advanced stage of planning. The slogan ?Platinum Surges Ahead? was selected to describe the exciting and vibrantnature of all aspects of platinum mining, beneficiation and marketing. This conference will cover these aspects from exploration and orebody delineation, through mine design, development and operation to mine closure; mineral beneficiation, marketing and compliance with the Mining Charter will also be subjects for discussion and debate. It is also anticipated that the issue of overall increases in productivity, through the introduction of technology, will demonstrate Southern Africa?s status as a premier mining district. It is my pleasure to welcome delegates from abroad and locally, on behalf of the SAIMM, to the Second International Platinum Conference ?Platinum Surges Ahead?. I trust that you will find the proceedings informative and value adding and will participate in the discussions and debate in order to obtain maximum benefit from the conference. PYROPHYLLITE is a hydrous aluminum silicate (A12Si4O10(OH)2)1 that occurs in both the foliated and the massive forms. The foliated variety resembles talc in that it has a greasy feel, a pearly luster, perfect basal cleavage, and usually is white, although in some deposits apple green, gray, brown, russet, and nearly black specimens may be found. The massive deposits of pyrophyllite yield pearl gray to light tan aggregates, some of which are so friable that they may be crushed with the hands into a fine gritty powder. Frequently specimens of the massive variety are studded with crystals of radial structure. The mineral has a specific gravity of about 2.7 and a hardness of 1 on Mohs' scale.1 The chemical composition of commercial pyrophyllite reflects the mineralogy of the deposits, which, according to Stuckey,2 contain pyrophyllite and quartz, together with chloritoid, sericite, and a few other minerals of negligible importance. The latter, he says, "are noticed in but small quantities to the extent they might occur as accessory constituents of an igneous rock or as products of regional metamorphism or weathering. . . . Quartz is abundant everywhere except in the very best grades of pyrophyllite." Analyses of specimens from several deposits are listed in Table 1, showing that the silica content varies from 57 to 73 per cent and the alumina from 22 to 33 per cent. Oxides of iron and the alkaline metals are collectively present, with one exception, to an extent of about 1 to 1.5 per cent. SOURCES At present, North Carolina is the only commercial source of pyrophyllite, although the mineral has been found in small quantities in many parts of the world. PRIOR to 1914, there was little demand for antimony in this country; its use was limited almost entirely to the manufacture of type and bearing metals. Practically no antimony ore was mined here, the market being supplied principally from China, and the alloy was produced by a direct mixing of lead and antimony. The great world war, with its demand for shrapnel in hitherto undreamed of quantities, precipitated a great boom in the price of antimony. Nominally quoted at 6 c. to 7 c. in 1914, the price increased by leaps and bounds to 45 c. in March, 1916. Under the stimulus of high prices many shall mines were opened, for it became profitable to work ores containing as low as 20 percent. antimony. High-grade sulfide ores (stibnite), containing 55 per cent. to 60 per cent. antimony, were received from Bolivia, China, and Alaska. Low-grade sulfide ores, running from 20 per cent. to 45 per cent., were produced in Nevada, California, Idaho, Utah, and Mexico; much of this ore was fairly rich in silver. The principal oxide ores came from Mexico and Oregon. The charge consisted of a variety of sulfide ores containing Sb 20 to 60 per cent. and Si02 6 to 45 per cent., oxide ores containing Sb 20 to 40 per cent. and SiO2 10 to 45 per cent. Secondary materials, such as battery plates, battery mud, lead oxide, paint, etc., together with refinery skims, softener skims, and other refinery byproducts, were treated along with the antimony ore to furnish the lead required. A study of the dissolution of gold from a pyrite concentrate and from various calcines is reported. The percentage extraction of gold was found to decrease with increasing sulphur content in the material leached because of the porosity of the materials, and particularly because of the passivation of the anodic dissolution of gold when the gold was In contact with other conducting minerals. This is explained in terms of the current-potential curves for the oxidation of gold and the reduction of dissolved oxygen.

All required information needs to be collected in a careful and systematic manner, and be rigorously checked and verified before estimation commences. In addition to geological, assay and location data, a large variety of other information is required for the estimation process. This includes mining, metallurgical and environmental parameters. Though outside their usual area of responsibility, geologists should be involved in the selection and collection of this additional Information.

A study on the electro kinetics of lead carbonate, silica, and alumina, in aqueous media was carried out at different pH values. The behavior of potential was determined for these species in the pH range between 3 and 12. Homocoagulation of lead carbonate in aqueous media is analyzed at its isoelectrical point. Lead carbonate heterocoagulation is analyzed with silica, alumina, and silica ? alumina mixtures at low pH values. The experimental results are considered for their possible application to treat residual water polluted with lead.
