The author is trying to clarify the existing problems in designing and laying out dynamic consolidation for soft ground improvement. Field testings and observations including vibrational parameters, pore pressures, stereoscopic photogrammetry etc. were run in order to trace the real behaviour of ground movement during tamping. It is believed that all the data got from the field work are rather informative and illustrative than that from theoretical modelling in the laboratory, thus some highlights relating effective thickness of compaction, maximum spacing between compaction points, number of blows for optimum tamping and seismic attenuation for environmental consideration are given.

Work measurement is the most common of many titles given to determining the amount of human work required to do any job. A new technique-like most modern management tools-it still needs years of constructive research. Yet despite known imperfections, it is probably the most enthusiastically used tool of cost control developed in the last hundred years. Over 85 pct of all companies employing more than 100 workers in one of the major industrial areas use work measurement. For a good reason, however, this has not been true in the mining industry until very recently. The facts make an interesting story.

A method of calculating formation water resistivities from chemical analyses is presented which is somewhat faster and more accurate than previously described methods. For 26 formation water samples taken from wells in the Texas Gulf Coast, the average deviation of calculated from measured water resistivities was 3.3 per cent, with an average bias of + l.l per cent in the calculated values. An uniquely-designed flash furnace for smelting of nickel concentrate and for the recovering of metal values from the slag generated has been in successful use for nearly six years. Within the last eighteen months the ability of the furnace to treat slag arising from converting operations without significant reduction in capacity has also been successfully demonstrated. Previously, converter slag had been treated separately in an electric furnace. The salient features of smelter developments are outlined and slag chemistry is discussed. The low cost method for the introduction of coal to partially replace light fuel oil is reviewed and total energy requirements evaluated.

COUNTERCURRENT staged processes involving chemical reactions between solid and gas streams are becoming more common. Such operations are generally carried out in a series of fluidized beds with each bed acting as a stage. Fig. 1 is a schematic illustration of a series of stages located in a single column, with a solid stream moving down through this column from stage to stage counter to a rising gas stream. At the Red Dome and Mungana deposits in north Queensland, Australia, it is proposed that mineralisation and alteration developed as a "telescoped" overprinting continuum, ranging in style from hypothermal to epithermal, reflecting the major changes that developed in the regional setting over the period circa 325 - 290Ma. Regional assessment suggests that this also applies to many other precious and base metal deposits within a 401an length of the host Siluro-Devonian Chillagoe Formation. A ten stage paragenetic sequence of structural preparation, multi phase intrusion and associated mineralisation, alteration and brecciation is postulated for the Chillagoe district.

An analytical framework is formulated to assist mining companies in assessing the relative merits of mineral exploration and acquisition strategies. The anticipated costs, risks, and returns of each strategy are conceptualised using decision trees. Economic criteria - expected net present value, expected return per unit of investment, and the probability of success - for each strategy are derived(from the appropriate decision tree network. Application of the analytical framework is illustrated using the example of a medium-size company in the Canadian base metal sector.

A personal computer is a valuable tool for blast design and analysis. Programs designed for the personal computer, such as the electronic spreadsheet, can be used for a wide range of applications. The spreadsheet formats discussed in this paper are used for explosive comparison, inventory/shot records, and timing design analysis. Each template can be adapted to fit the individual needs of the end user. An example of a graphically orientated blast design program, written in the BASIC programming language, is also discussed.

DURING the last week in April, cards were sent out from New York to Institute members affiliated with the Mining, Geology, and Geophysics Div. The cards requested recipients to indicate their main technical interest, within the division, i.e., mining, or geology, or geophysics. The reason for the cards is simple. Within the Institute more than 8000 have expressed either primary or secondary interest in this division. However, there is no way to determine the technical association stimulating this interest.

A system of core logging and computerized entry and retrieval is described which permits accurate and rapid logging of core, cuttings and geophysical records derived from exploration and development bore holes. The system is so constructed that older drilling records can also be utilized. Output consists of conventional computer print out and graphic logs with a variety of scales, symbols and formats. Such logs can be used in constructing rock profiles which are necessary in property assessment and mine development.

The distribution coefficients of Ag, As, Au, Bi, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Te, and Zn between copper matte and slag from the reverb furnace No.2 at the Copper Smelter and Refinery, RTB BOR (Yugoslavia), are presented in this paper. The influence of the matte grade on the minor elements distribution coefficients between copper matte and slag is analyzed. The minor elements distribution in the slag phase along the slag melt depth and the furnace length is also determined.

Mines of Southern Kuzbass working out, basically, coal formations of flat seams. Seams, as a rule, are inclined to self-ignition. Detection at early stages of the centers of endogenous underground fires has great value for safe conducting mountain works. One of methods of detection of an early stage of underground fires in the worked out space is the method of superficial radon survey. In the report the method is de-scribed and examples of superficial radon survey on concrete layers are given.

VArIoUs classes of coals are recognized in this country at the present time. These classes depend largely upon physical characteristics rather than upon chemical composition, and consequently they cannot be accurately defined. The divisions into anthracite, semi-anthracite and semi-bituminons are fairly satisfactory; but the term bituminous embraces so large a variety of coal that it is of little value, and the term lignite is so loosely applied that it has little or no place in a scientific classification.

Inexpensive and effective means of delivering courses to mining engineers who live at remote and scattered locations remains to be a challenging issue. Computer-based instructorless but interactive multimedia delivery is a good substitute to traditional short courses and one-way broadcasts. Such a system, enhanced with a wide area network, is an inexpensive alternative to two-way broadcasts and even to a traditional university. Course material can either be delivered on compact disks (CDs) or on-line from the host servers over the phone lines using a personal computer and a modem. Although technically not feasible using ordinary telephone service lines at the present time without further modification, advances in this field indicate that this up and coming medium may dominate the competition in the future. This paper investigates the present and the future of this technology and discusses the experiences gained in creating and disseminating a prototype multimedia CD which was created at the Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Institute of the University of Missouri-Rolla to teach a portion of a course in Ground Control. The hardware and software used in creating the audio, 3-0 graphics, animation dips, video clips, and movies are listed. The structure of the program and the way how interactivity was achieved is explained in detail.

THE Northwestern Pennsylvania Oil Producers Association and the United States Geological Survey have cooperated in conducting a pre-liminary study of the character of the flood waters, the relationship of changes in concentration of the salts dissolved in these waters to ultimate flood-oil production, and the original association of oil and water in the Bradford field. Bradford has long been recognized as a dry-sand field. As a matter of fact, there had been little information available on the oil-field waters of northern Pennsylvania until this investigation was undertaken. THE BRADFORD SAND Practically all of the oil produced in the Bradford field comes from one horizon, generally known as the Third, or Bradford, sand. Originally, it was believed that the Bradford sand was equivalent to the Third sand of Venango County, Pennsylvania and the name "Third" unfortunately still persists, although shortly after the discovery of the Bradford pool Carll1 determined that there was a stratigraphic interval of approximately ;000 ft. between the two horizons. The Bradford sand, although varying considerably in thickness and lithology within local areas, is persistent throughout the field. It is of marine origin and, upon both paleontologi-cal and stratigraphic evidence, is regarded as a basal member of the Chemung formation.
