The U.S. Bureau of Mimes is investigating Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy for on- filter quartz analysis of respirable dust. A custom accessory is described for full-face examination of filters utilizing a large-diameter infrared (IR) beam. The accessory positions samples to match diameters with that of the diverging analytical beam. Sample absorbance is then measured. With nonuniform deposition of dust on collection filters being a major issue for such analyses, this approach is the most direct way to accomplish sample area averaging. The approach is unconventional since it utilizes large-beam geometries instead of the usually desired minimized beam dimensions. The issues and problems involved in the analysis of quartz on a filter matrix are discussed. Absorption bands chosen, light-scattering effects, curved baselines, random noise, interference fringes, and possible solutions to technical difficulties are the topics covered. The more significant findings include a 20-pg detection limit for quartz when the custom accessory is used and minimal occurrence of light-scattering effects at low wavenumbers. The custom accessory performance was satisfactory and merits further work. With continued research, an on-filter method for quartz analysis of respirable dusts seems achievable.

Spirals play an important role in fine coal and mineral processing. To date, almost all spiral designs have been empirically based. Although many operational units have evolved utilising this approach, it does not necessarily lead to optimal spiral designs. This paper presents the preliminary results of a collaborative computational and experimental research program to understand the detailed separation process which will ultimately lead to a parametric assessment of alternative spiral designs through computational simulation. Unlike the empirical approach, a computational simulation is only subject to the fundamental physics of the fluid flow. No prior knowledge of the generic spiral flow is necessary. The computer code implements a robust finite volume technique to predict the three dimensional fluid motion. A height function method is used to model free surfaces and the code is capable of handling arbitrary spiral geometries. Preliminary validation of the computational simulation is carried out through analysis of an existing spiral design -the Mineral Technologies LD9 unit. Computational flow predictions are compared with experimental measurements obtained using a number of techniques, including sampling and flow visualisation, for flow test cases where no solid particulate is present.

THE Secretary of the Interior in his recent report to the President has defined the new public-land policy, which is in fact "but a new application of an old policy." His words may be more acceptable on this subject of land classification than the repetition of phrases which have served some of us for several years. Secretary Lane says of the past: "Congress has always been most generous as to the disposition of the national lands. . . . There was land for all, and it was the government's glad function to distribute it and let those profit who could. . . . And this generous donor was not so petty as to discriminate between kinds of lands, the uses to which they could be put, or the purposes which those might have who got them. Land is land, save when it contains minerals; this was roughly the broad principle adopted. To classify was a task too difficult or not worth while. The lands would classify themselves when they arrived in individual ownership. And so the door was opened for monopoly and for fraud. Of the reaction and the evolution of a new policy, the Secretary continues: "A reaction was inevitable. If lands were to be withdrawn from public service, why might not the government do the withdrawing itself? The old philosophy that `land is land' was evidently unfitted to a country where land is sometimes timber and sometimes coal; indeed, where land may mean water-water for tens of thousands of needy neighboring acres. For the lands of the West differ as men do, in character and condition and degree of usefulness. We had not recognized this fact when we said `land is land.' Lands fitted for dry farming and lands that must forever lie unused without irrigation; lands that are worthless save for their timber; lands that are rich in grasses and lands that. are poor in grasses; lands underlain with the non-precious minerals essential to industry or agriculture; lands that are invaluable for reservoir or dam sites these varieties may be multiplied, and each new variety emphasizes the fact that each kind of land has its own future and affords its own opportunity for contributing to the nation's wealth.

THE earlier struggles in petroleum geology were directed to solving the origin and method of accumulation of petroleum. We are now fairly well agreed on those subjects. Most of us think that the great mass of petroleum commercially produced comes from plants or animals, or possibly from both. We are confident that the oil was not produced where it is now found but has accumulated in reservoirs of various kinds. The types of reservoirs are certainly variable but they just as certainly follow definite geologic laws. Some of these types of reservoirs can be determined from surface study; others cannot. We know, too, that these types of reservoirs (largely structures such as anticlines, domes, and terraces) are much more widespread than the oil pools. In other words, there are many places where good sands and good structures exist but where oil is not found. It is the purpose of this paper, therefore; to attempt to analyze, from a regional standpoint, some of the conditions that control the presence or absence of oil pools and to group them in a regional way, hence the term "Petroliferous Provinces." The paper lays no claim to presenting new facts but attempts to group and classify the information that so many have expressed again and again. The essential factors for an oil field are petroleum, a reservoir material, and conditions under which the petroleum can enter the reservoir but cannot escape except through the drill holes. The paper will first discuss the source of petroleum as it occurs in definite regions, then the regional arrangement of reservoir strata, and finally the areal arrangement of structures. To have petroleum, there must be a source. Since living matter is considered the source of the petroleum, geological conditions must, have been such that living organisms were abundant. Arid regions on the earth's surface have not given rise to living things-in sufficient abundance to produce oil; similarly, too cold regions and saline inland lakes. Vazamentos de água em painéis refrigerados apresentam grandes riscos operacionais e de segurança nos processos de fabricação do aço, principalmente nos Fornos Elétricos a Arco. A detecção precoce de vazamentos de água pode minimizar e/ou até eliminar grandes riscos operacionais, de segurança e patrimônio. A Tecnologia ELD, desenvolvida pela Lumar Metals, traz uma proposta inovadora de monitoramento dos painéis do FEA, que através da combinação e análise de dados coletados individualmente nos painéis refrigerados é capaz de detectar vazamentos de 0,2 l/min em até 10 segundos após sua ocorrência. A coleta de dados é realizada de forma contínua nos painéis refrigerados e transmitida via wireless. Testes em escala laboratorial foram realizados, onde os vazamentos de água foram simulados através da abertura de válvulas solenoides. Nos testes em escala industrial o sistema pôde ser avaliado em suas condições reais de operação, ficando exposto ao calor, poeira, ruídos e campos eletromagnéticos. Em todas as etapas de testes realizadas a Tecnologia ELD foi capaz de detectar os menores vazamentos de água, credenciando a tecnologia para inserção no mercado.

Buehler, Cates, Daveler, Eavenson, Eilers, Elliott, Evans, Guess, Lovejoy, Moulton, Rickard, Tally, Turner,, Wraith and Wright being pres¬ent. Messrs. Tally, Bassett, Rickard, Mathews and Cates were chosen to form the Executive Committe with Mr. Tally as Chairman, and Messrs. Krumb, Guess and Moulton for the Finance Committee with Mr. Krumb as chairman. Karl Eilers was reelected as Treasurer and H. Foster Bain as Secretary, after which the Directors adjourned for the usual dinner reported elsewhere. At the open session of the Board, at which in addition Messrs. Allen and McAuliffe were present, the work of organization was continued with appointments to committees as listed herewith. Various actions of the Executive and Finance Committees were confirmed, the budget for 1931 formally approved, the meeting dates for the year adopted, 34 new Members and Associates, 13 Junior Members and 31 Student Associates admitted by election and transfer and 29 resignations accepted.

Aparelhos eletroeletrônicos como computadores e televisões são constituídos por telas de cristal líquido, que ao se tornarem obsoletos são classificados como resíduos, e dispostos em aterros sanitários. Entretanto, na composição das telas de cristal líquido há metais de valor agregado, como o índio (In). Com a fundamentação no processo de reciclagem de telas de LCD, este estudo propõe a recuperação e quantificação desse metal que é encontrado na forma de ITO (óxido de índio e estanho). Para tal feito, foram empregadas rotas hidrometalúrgicas, tendo como principal etapa a lixiviação. Como parâmetros de controle, os ensaios de extração sólido-líquido foram realizados em temperaturas que variam de 50 a 80°C. Com isso, foi obtido resultado de extração do índio em cerca de 60% em massa, nas condições de 60°C e após 4 horas de lixiviação.

Amostras de ferro puro sinterizadas foram enriquecidas superficialmente com molibdênio e em seguida foram cementadas. Todos os tratamentos térmicos foram realizados utilizando descarga luminescente anormal. Durante o processo de sinterização e de enriquecimento superficial as amostras são colocadas sobre o ânodo da descarga, na configuração cátodo-ânodo confinado. O bombardeamento da superfície do cátodo por espécies energéticas produz a pulverização de átomos do cátodo que se depositam na superfície da amostra e se difundem até certa profundidade. Foi observado que a espessura da camada superficial enriquecida está relacionada à energia de bombardeamento das espécies. Durante o processo de cementação, a presença de Mo na região superficial favorece a estabilização da fase a- Fe alterando a cinética de precipitação da cementita nessa região. A cementação das amostras enriquecidas com molibdênio elevou os valores de dureza obtidos para a região superficial.

O conhecimento das características termodinâmicas do sistema NiO-CaO é de fundamental importância no modelamento do equilíbrio metal-escória-refratário para a elaboração de ligas à base de níquel em fornos elétricos a arco assim como para o desenvolvimento de base de dados consistente para a extração de níquel de minérios lateríticos. O modelamento existente para a escória líquida, baseado no modelo quase-químico modificado por Pelton e Blander, não pode ser utilizado diretamente na base de dados SLAG usada pelo programa Thermo-Calc pois utiliza um outro modelo termodinâmico para a fase escória. O presente trabalho apresenta o modelamento do sistema NiO-CaO usando o modelo quase-químico de células de Kapoor-Frohberg-Gaye para a fase escória líquida. Os dados utilizados neste modelamento foram atividades das espécies químicas nas fases sólidas, composições solvus em várias temperaturas e parâmetros magnéticos da fase NiO. A otimização foi feita com o módulo PARROT® do programa Thermo-Calc®. Os resultados obtidos da otimização ajustaram-se bem aos dados experimentais apresentados na literatura.

Uma apresentação desta tecnologia bem como uma narrativa de sua trajetória e os resultados parciais obtidos é descrito neste trabalho.

O presente trabalho abrange o estudo de um sistema de transporte de matéria prima para a produção de superfosfato granulado, composto por uma sequência de três transportadores de correia convencional e um elevador de canecas. Os componentes destes equipamentos são retratados separadamente, em seguida explica-se o funcionamento do conjunto. São expostos os problemas no desempenho do equipamento e as causas identificadas. Por este motivo, analisa-se a viabilidade econômica da substituição do equipamento atual por um transportador de correia tubular, sistema mais avançado que também é detalhado através da descrição de seus componentes e funcionamento. A análise inicia-se com o dimensionamento dos dois tipos de equipamento de acordo com a planta disponível. Então se compara o cenário atual com o proposto, considerando o desperdício de produto, tempo e custo de paradas para manutenção e custo de implantação do novo equipamento.

Melhorar a qualidade dos aços e dos processos tem sido uma rotina dos engenheiros metalurgistas e das siderúrgicas em um mercado que exige produtos com qualidade e preço competitivos. No processo de refino dos aços são feitos os ajustes de composição química e temperatura, além das modificações inclusionárias necessárias às características de qualidade dos produtos e as exigências para uma perfeita lingotabilidade. O processo de solidificação mais comum é o lingotamento contínuo, onde a continuidade de fluxo de aço líquido através das válvulas é assegurada através da temperatura adequada e presença de inclusões no estado líquido nas temperaturas de lingotamento. Neste trabalho foram utilizados os softwares Thermocalc e CEQCSI com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito dos elementos químicos carbono, silício e enxofre na janela de lingotabilidade de diagramas de fases alumínio vs cálcio. Os softwares se mostraram bastante apropriados e eficazes neste estudo, e os resultados indicam que os elementos estudados afetam diretamente a posição da janela de lingotabilidade dos aços carbono. A análise de amostra de tarugo de um aço 0,2%C via MEV mostrou que há grande heterogenidade de inclusões no aço acalmado ao alumínio e tratado com cálcio.

A novel two-stage froth flotation process for the recovery of pure magnesite from low grade ores is described. The process consists of a first-stage, magnesite flotation step where a rougher magnesite concentrate is floated with amine collectors. The first-stage froth concentrate is then repulped in fresh water, and quartenary ammonium salt and fuel oil are added to float the remaining impurities. The results from laboratory batch tests show that a high-grade magnesite concentrate assaying 0.99-0.20% Si02 and 2.84-0.46%a Ca0 can be produced. Regulation of the variables controlling magnesite froth flotation also allows the variation of the ratio % Ca0: % SiO2, between the acceptable limits 0.32 to 5.79. This ratio is important to the quality of dead-burned magnesite.

At what level of concentration does lead begin to play an important part in determining these elevated-temperature characteristics ? A. J. Smith.—That is a difficult question to answer because of the complicating features of the alloys that arc lead free. I do not know of any work done on the subject. The performance of a system for detecting the onset of overloads on rod mills is described. The system has bee,, tested at CODELCO E1 Salvador Concentrator where, due t,, variations on size distribution of the copper ore feed, th' rod mill is frequently subject to overloads. The main inpur signal to the system is the rod mill sound, after being measured and analog conditioned. This signal and othe signals measuring the fresh ore feed and the mill watt addition are fed to a computer containing a simpl mathematical model. The model parameters are empiricall estimated and an analog output signal is generated, whic gives an early prediction of the overload condition. The experimental results described in this paper show that the overload condition may be predicted with an anticipation of about three minutes.

Pittsburgh bed and Lower Freeport bed coals were tested in the U.S. Bureau of Mines two-stage froth flotation pilot plant, which utilizes a new flotation process to remove pyritic sulfur. The process consists of a first-stage coal flotation step to remove coarse, free pyrite and other refuse in the tailings. The clean coal froth concentrate is then repulped and treated with a coal depressant, a pyrite collector, and a frother to selectively float the remaining pyrite in a second stage. Results in the pilot plant were excellent, comparing well with those obtained in laboratory batch tests. That is, about 70 percent of the pyrite present in the Pittsburgh bed coal and about 90 percent of the pyrite present in the Lower Freeport bed coal were removed with excellent final clean coal recoveries.
