TO determine how rigorous a treatment was necessary completely to remove sorbed gases from molybdenum electrodes in vacuum tubes, the degassing process in high vacuum was studied in the temperature range 800° to 2300°C., and the gases analyzed. Some work was also done on the degassing of tungsten, nickel, and carbon. It was shown that the amount of gas is proportional to the mass of the sample and not to the surface area, indicating that the gas is distributed through the body of the metal. A study was made of the solubility of nitrogen in tungsten and molybdenum from 1200" to 2400" C., at equilibrium pressures from 0.01 to 760 millimeters.

Traditionally it has commonly been believed that the only problem with inductive reactance in a submerged-arc furnace is that it leads to difficulties with the electricity supply as a result of the Iow power factor. This paper sets out to show that inductive reactance can also give rise to the following problems in the metallurgical operation of a furnace: (i) dead and live phases (fairly well known in openarc furnaces), (ii) lack of sensitivity to electrode movement, (iii) interactions between electrodes. These problems increase with increasing inductive reactance relative to resistance, and thus they increase with furnace size. Each of these effects is discussed in detail, and suggestions are made for their alleviation.

The Institute maintains for the use of members (and especially for the use of out-of-town members) a reading and writing room, where all usual office facilities are available, including telephone, telegraph, receipt, forwarding and care of mail and express packages, etc. A file of current magazines is also maintained in this room, and the Institute's staff will lend its best efforts to serving the members in connection therewith. The Institute also maintains for the use of its members free dressing rooms, library research department, etc. Attention is called to these facilities at the present time in the belief. that they may be especially useful to out-of-town members in connection with the Meeting.

In the exploration of an area proposed for the establishment of an underground colliery, consideration of all land and mining titles and consents has early priority. Environmental aspects have become more meaningful. Preliminary assessments of previous geological knowledge, together with new geological and geophysical data from surface investigations, condition the decision to proceed with costly diamond drilling programmes. Methods other than fully cored diamond drilling have a useful application in appropriate circumstances. Drilling exploration is conducted in stages of increasing density of-hole spacing to the point where, with holes at 1 km centres, reserves are categorized as measured. The programme is subject to constant review in the light of market changes.

In the development of the Sirosmelt tin smelting process the need has arisen to understand and predict the problems likely to be encountered in optimal furnace operation on larger scales and over wide ranges of operating parameters. To study these parameters in detail with existing pilot plants and production scale plants is prohibitive in terms of cost, time and limitations of furnace design. The Sirosmelt computer model, SMELT, has been developed to simulate the process and to study a range of metallurgical parameters. The model's robust basic form has allowed adaption to a variety of needs. It is now being used to generate data on optimum operating conditions for a commercial scale plant and for operator training.

This paper addresses; land use, rehabilitation and the State/Federal regulatory process, in light of Australia signing various international conventions and agreements in the area of environmental protection. The conventions on biological diversity, climate change and the implications of the Rio and Agenda 21 declarations are examined. The implementation of these initiatives through the Inter-Governmental Agreement on the Environment, and through legistlative mechanisms at Federal and State level is explored.Particular attention is given to the biodiversity strategy in context of the need to integrate economic aspirations and environmental concerns as a basis for sustsainable development. The paper concludes with a brief comparison of the major approval processes in each State, relating to mining environmental issues.

THE power drag scrapers and the slackline cableway excavator have been called "long-range excavators." Broadly, their field of usefulness is restricted to work in which their long range of action permits them to operate economically, and which other, possibly more conventional, excavating units cannot do. Both of these machines dig or lift material and transport it to a clumping point. They combine these two functions in a single machine, nearly always in a single straight-line motion. FIG. The art of drilling tunnels is still in its infancy, although it is 70 years since the first tunnel driver was put into operation. (It was used to drive 6000 ft of tunnel under the English Channel.) But during the next 60 years neither government agencies nor private enterprise could find much of a future in tunnel drivers. It was difficult to justify the heavy investments, labor was opposed to the machines, and there had been some spectacular failures. In the last ten years, however, there have been changes. Tunnel drivers are being tried with increasing frequency-in spite of the fact that a large number of them have had to be abandoned on site.

Many high temperature industrial processes involve gaseous halogen-bearing environments. Essentially, these fall into three subject areas: power generation, waste incineration and especially extractive metallurgy. Fundamental to any understanding of the process chemistry and efficiency in the process technology is an adequate knowledge of background thermodynamics relating to metal-chlorine reactions. In this context, existing free energy/temperature diagrams for metal chlorides do not include many elements, in particular the so called refractory elements from Group V and Group VI of the Periodic Table, namely niobium, tantalum and vanadium, and molybdenum. This paper reports estimation and calculations of the free energy values for these chlorides. The data is discussed in the context of high temperature chlorination processes.

In 1989 CSIRO Minerals initiated investigations into continuous converting of copper matte into low sulphur blister in Sirosmelt type reactors. Following the successful piloting of this processing route, some effort was directed towards a single stage copper making process where copper metal is made in one step from concentrate. The aim of the project is to develop a continuous process, which offers considerable environmental and economic benefits over conventional copper making processes, which use Pierce-Smith converters. In the selection of the optimum flowsheet a number of slag treatment options have been considered and tested. These unit operations include: leaching and electrowinning, flotation-leaching-electrowinning and flotation with recycling of recovered copper through the smelting vessel. In this paper the suitability of these process options are evaluated using the available information and recently measured copper recoveries from our testwork at CSIRO. The operating and capital costs of the various options have been estimated using Aspen Plus simulation procedures. The most attractive flowsheet in terms of capital and operating costs is the treatment of slag using mineral processing techniques and the recycle of a copper slag concentrate to the smelting vessel. It has been found that the chemistry of the slag being treated has a large bearing on the recovery of copper in flotation and hence on the economics of the process.

This user's guide covers the operation of a suite of three computer programs-Bplane, Bstepp, and Bwedge. These programs can be used to evaluate the potential for plane shear, step-path, and wedge failures along the crest of a slope bench. Such failures reduce the width of a catch bench and may compromise the bench's ability to catch rolling or sliding material before it reaches miners working below. The Bplane and Bwedge programs address sliding of blocks defined by continuous planar joints. The Bstepp program examines sliding of blocks defined by more complex failure surfaces that include steeply dipping cross joints and may even include breaks across small bridges of intact rock. The programs are applicable to jointed rock masses where the joints are small relative to the overall slope and form a number of sets with uniform statistical characteristics within a slope sector. The theoretical basis, application, and operation of these programs are described.

As a society, the retiring age of workers is increasing. Individuals are having to consider working to an older age (beyond 55 years), the reason being to æpay offÆ debt, maintain a quality of life or, as a bigger picture, because society simply cannot afford the aging population. The Government is encouraging and promoting those approaching retirement to work to an older age to alleviate the financial burden of an aging population. In a working context those aged 55 years and over accounted for ten per cent of the Australian workforce in 1998 with this age group expected to account for half of the growth in the workforce between now and 2016. For the 60 - 64 years which account for less than three per cent in 1998, this group is expected to account for 15 per cent of the growth in the same period. As a result of individuals who have worked all their lives and in some cases æphysically hardÆ, they do not fully enjoy their years of retirement as a time when they get to choose what they want to do rather than what they have to do. Of particular interest are the physical or health related conditions that individuals end up with and the restrictions that ensue resulting in an individual being incapacitated either physically or with respect to the state of their health.

In offshore oil drilling as it is done today, accidental blowouts cause considerable damage lo the environment. Public alarm over such accidents has already resulted in a number of legislative proposals which appear to favor the cessation of all drilling on the Federally owned continental shelf. Present concern for the environment and the increasing water depths associated with offshore drilling suggest the desirability of applying underground mining technology to offshore petroleum exploration. If offshore drilling were to proceed from underground accesses to the continental shelf, accidental damage to surface waters would be avoided, and so would the difficulties of exploring in deep or ice-filled waters. The specific approach proposed here is intended as a preliminary to offshore oil exploration in a known field or geologic structure. The end result of this method would be an on-shore vertical or inclined shaft terminating in an operating tunnel or haulageway as shown in the illustrations. From the haulageway, branching access tunnels would lead to drilling compartments. With this arrangement, it appears likely that one operating tunnel could serve all lessees ill a particular unit operation. Although an inclined shaft is not illustrated, this would probably be more practical than a vertical shaft owing to the length of the casings and the character of other equipment used in oil producing operations.

The gold mine sector is presently facing low gold prices as well as technological challenges. Its competitiveness and survival will depend on new mining methods and equipment to improve ore extraction. In 1999, Natural Resources Canada has invested new funds over a period of three years at CANMET’s Experimental Mine to establish the Narrow-Vein Mining Project. A team of engineers and researchers specialized in mining, mechanics and electronics engineering are working to meet the critical need of ore-extraction technology. CANMET’s programme in mechanization and automation for narrow-vein mining had, prior to 1999, realised several important achievements, many in co-operation with a consortium of mining companies(Soredem). The investment of new funds in this area will contribute to develop technologies to improve the productivity, as well as health and safety conditions of the narrow-vein mining industry. Several important impacts of this project will be monitored. In particular, a database of methods and equipment used in narrow-vein mining is being developed. A key thrust is to identify operators’ needs with respect to the development and automation of mining methods and equipment. Based on those needs, research and development projects will be created. The paper will present the objectives of the narrow-vein mining project and some of the results, including the web site developed to present the results of the project.

Sampling of an orebody has a number of purposes. In the initial phase, it is necessary to define the limits of the orebody and mineral content to the extent that it can be stated whether it is, in fact, an economic orebody. Also, samples must be generated so that geological and metallurgical evaluations can be made. Finally, when sufficient information concerning the geology, mineralogy, and metallurgy are known, a mining method and plan can be developed and the metallurgical; plants constructed to process the ores as they become available. With today's large, complex open pit copper mines, single sampling methods would be inadequate. Diamond drilling, percussion drilling, underground shafts and drifts all play a part in the total orebody, definition. At Anamax Mining Company's Twin Buttes mine, sampling and orebody definition.wil1 eventually lead to the existence of three metallurgical processing plants and, perhaps, an underground mining operation. A 30 000 tons per day sulfide concentrator was placed in operation in September 1969 and a 10 000 tons per day oxide leaching plant was placed into service in May 1975. The aim of this presentation is to historically discuss the orebody sampling that has been done at Twin Buttes, briefly describe the orebody, and discuss the analytical methods currently used to assist the geologist, metallurgist and mine planner in their respective evaluations.

Froth flotation is the primary mineral processing separation step employed in the beneficiation of PGM ore bodies. Anglo Platinum operates a significant portion of the total installed flotation capacity in the PGM industry, which is installed at 20 operating plants across the Bushveld. PGM flotation has undergone a considerable evolution in both the capacity of flotation cells employed as well as in the circuit design configuration over the past thirty years. Certain of Anglo Platinum?s flotation circuits have been in operation for a relatively long period of time, (in some operations installed equipment dates from the 1960?s) and this allows comparative operating performance between various equipment types and circuits to be evaluated. This paper summarizes some aspects of this experience. Research trends in flotation are continuously monitored to incorporate appropriate findings into existing and future circuit designs. Continuous evaluation and monitoring of flotation performance is undertaken to identify opportunities for increasing flotation efficiencies. Mineralogical and fractional analyses of plant composites and survey samples are analysed to interrogate speciation and association data. This analysis has enabled a better understanding of priorities and opportunities for improved metallurgical performance. These opportunities are divided into three improvement areas: stability, liberation, and fines flotation. The paper discusses these, as well as the circuit design improvements required to take full advantage of the opportunities identified.

The lack of suitable means of storing hydrogen for use in the transport sector is generally viewed as a primary showstopper for a hydrogen economy. Recent developments within solid state hydrogen storage in complex hydrides and metal ammines have sparked new hope of a long term solution, but as of now, no materials fulfill all the DoE targets for onboard storage [1]. A detailed physical understanding of the ab-/desorption processes and the role of the essential catalytic additives is an essential prerequisite for the development of new optimized hydrogen storage systems. Here, we illustrate the potential of utilizing the synergy of combining state-of-the-art in theoretical methods and experimental techniques in the analysis and design of materials for hydrogen storage. Recent advances in computer hard- and software has made it possible to treat many of the essential problems in such materials, i.e. structural stability, hydrogen dissociation and diffusion, with high accuracy methods like density functional theory. We rely on such results to guide our synthesis of new materials, and to interpret our experimental results from, e.g. time dependant in situ x-ray diffraction, synchrotron/neutron experiments, and advanced materials testing. Through a continuous feed-back optimization loop between theory and experiments, the obtained nano-scale insight is used to expedite the design and development of novel materials for hydrogen storage.

A short time ago, I had occasion to cast iron plates 1 in. thick, direct from metal containing Si, 0.51; 8, 0.045; Mn, 0.75; and P, 0.094 per cent. Much to my astonishment, I found that there was no trouble in planing them; whereas, if cupolaimetal of like composition had been used,*the planing would have been a difficult operation. I have often noticed a greater fluidity or " life " in furnace-metal, as compared with the cupola-product. Iron can be seen flowing down the furnace-runners from 50 to 100 ft., and reaching the last pig-bed in satisfactory condition, while cupola-metal might have solidified before it had flowed so far. I have seen Bessemer iron, which, on account of its low phosphorus-content, does not have the " life " of ordinary foundry-iron, held in a 30-ton ladle for nearly an hour and a half; and after skimming off the coke-dust, it still had to be cooled off' considerably before being cast. As a general proposition, it is known that the lower sulphur-content and the frequently higher temperature of direct-metal, compared with the same iron remelted in the cupola, has much to do with its greater life; yet some problems connected with this phenomenon seem to call for further study. For instance, furnace-metal containing more than 1 per cent. of silicon holds carbon, which is separated later as "kish." This separation does not take place to any great degree while the metal is very hot; but during its gradual cooling, at times, the kish is given off in such large quantities as to cover the ground from 20 to 30 ft. around the ladle. In making castings of direct-metal, especially with a high content of silicon, the separation of kish becomes an annoyance. Quebec Cartier Mining Co. operates a low-grade iron ore deposit at Lac Jeannine, Que., which is located at the extreme southwestern end of the Quebec-Labrador Trough (Fig. 1). The facilities there include one of the world's largest concentrators, a hydroelectric plant of 60,000 hp, and the modern town of Gagnon. A 191-mile railway connects the mine to the seaport situated at Port Cartier on the St. Lawrence River. The harbor in Port Cartier can accommodate both lake and large ocean- going vessels and is also the site of a major grain terminal. The concentrator in Lac Jeannine is designed to produce some 8 million tpy (tons per year) of specular hematite concentrate, containing 66% Fe, from approximately 20 million tons of crude ore. An annual stripping program of 5 to 8 million cu yd of waste rock uncovers the required ore. Approximately 100,000 tons of ore and waste are removed daily on a year-round, 24-hr-per-day basis. The open pit covers an area with maximum dimensions of 8,000 x 2,600 ft (Fig. 2). Present mining plans call for an ultimate depth of approximately 1,000 ft below original ground level. The rocks in the pit area are typical of this portion of the Grenville geological province. They consist largely of marble, quartz rock, pegmatite, iron formation, and stratigraphically older gneisses. The iron-ore formation consists of medium to coarse-grained specular hematite in a quartz host rock. The formation occurs locally in a plunging, anticlinal form. The topography in the vicinity of the mine is rolling, with maximum variations in elevation of about 400 ft. The hills are thickly wooded with birch, black spruce, and some tamarack. Lakes and muskeg areas are plentiful. Precipitation and temperature records have been kept since 1959. The annual rainfall has ranged between a low of 23 in. and a high of 42 in.
