The Liddell longwall equipment consists of 118 four leg supports, a shearer and armoured face conveyor of 170mm length. The equipment was supplied to Coal & Allied Operations Pty Limited (Coal and Allied) by Westfalia Australia Pty Limited (Westfalia). The project commenced as a feasibility study in 1983, a proposal was put to the board of directors in March 1984 and a specification distributed. Nine companies tendered for the supply of a longwall face and the supplier was selected from a short list of four companies. At the same time Coal & Allied examined the facilities at Liddell Colliery and decided to upgrade the conveyor belt system to cater for the high production from a longwall face. The surface facilities, transport system, water and electrical supplies to the colliery were also to be upgraded. During the twelve months to December 1985, the colliery was upgraded while the longwall equipment was being manufactured. There was no use of emulsion explosive at Croatia till 1997. Several attempts have been done to bear out the economical and technological affordability of applying the emulsion explosive for open pits and to make the contractor familiar with characteristics of emulsion explosive exepiting experimental blasts series at more open pits on different kinds of rocks. Testing the efficiencies of emulsion explosive there has been applied the original method for linear enlargement of burden of Sc.D. Josip Krsnik’s from Mining, Geology & Oil Faculty, University at Zagreb. The method of linear burden’s enlargement, in distinction from other methods concerning these problems, has been carried out in situ, under real exploitation conditions whereas the physical-mechanical rock’s features, geological conditions, bed relations and rocks’ structure influence the blast efficiencies. On such way, by mean of method the precise boring and blast sizes will be reached for each kind of rock and geological structural bed’s conditions referring to specific explosive type. The technical-economical analysis indicates the most favorable explosive type for specific bed.

In late 1980, Exxon Minerals Company performed rock mechanics testing on oriented 150 mm drill core from their 75Fi tonne massive sulfide deposit near Crandon, Wisconsin. Instrumented samples from depths of 300 meters indicate premining horizontal stresses in a north-south direction (parallel to pillar faces) to average 12,300 kPa, with the perpendicular plane yielding an average stress of 14,630 kPa. Rock strength versus sample size was compared using uniaxial compressive strengths from 47 mm, 95 mm and 150 mm core. Massive sulfide averaged 153,300 kPa, 139,845 kPa and 75,330 kPa respectively, while the hanging wall and foot- wall averaged 92,000 kPa, 76,560 kPa and 57,960 kPa respectively. Point load compressive strengths were calculated using formula suggested by both Hassani et al., 1980 and Broch et al., 1972. Values calculated using the Hassani formula closely resembled pre- existing point load and uniaxial compressive strengths, while values calculated using the Broch formula were 50 percent low.

A mineral and chemical characterisation study was conducted on ilmenite-rich heavy mineral concentrates sourced from the western sector of the Eucla Basin in southern Australia. Test work involved using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electron microprobe-based characterisation methods. Results showed considerable variability in the degree of ilmenite alteration between deposits with TiO2 contents varying from 53 - 63 wt per cent TiO2. Notwithstanding variability between individual deposits, the samples all had [Ti]/[Ti+Fe] ratios >0.5 consistent with a mineral assemblage of hydrated ilmenite or the hydrated, Ti-rich alteration phase pseudorutile (Fe3+2-x Ti3O9-3x (OH)3x). Accessory phases consisted of rutile (primary and secondary), zircon, aluminosilicates, quartz, Fe oxyhydroxides and spinels. Results for the most altered material are broadly comparable with data for ilmenite concentrates from the eastern margin of the basin. The mineralogy of the western Eucla Basin concentrates and the minor element composition of the ilmenite grains suggest they could be upgraded to synthetic rutile by a modified Becher process.

The Bureau of Mines studied the potential for recovering marketable barite concentrates that meet oil well drilling-mud specifications from barite waste pond materials. The study was conducted as part of the Bureau's research program to conserve domestic mineral resources by advancing mineral recycling technology. The samples, which were obtained from Georgia, Nevada, Missouri, and Illinois, varied widely in character, particle size, and barite content. The samples were treated with sodium silicate and sodium cetyl-stearyl sulfate and then floated. The flotation flow sheet was modified to reject barren coarse and/or slime fractions from some of the samples, and one feed sample had to be scrubbed prior to flotation to remove residual flotation reagents. The cleaned concentrates had BaS04 contents ranging from 95.0 to 96.9 percent, while recovering 81.2 to 95.9 percent of the barite in the feed. The specific gravity of each concentrate exceeded the specification of 4.2. The removal of the flotation reagents from the flotation concentrate was not investigated.

Over the last two years work has been undertaken within the Pasminco Metals - BHAS Zinc Plant to improve the efficiency and maintain the production capacity of the operation. The work has centred upon the installation of suitable process instrumentation to improve process control and the development of new unit operations to maintain control of the circuit water and sulphate balance. A key aspect of the new process instrumentation has been the development of an on-line analyser to monitor the total antimony concentration during zinc dust purification. As a result of changes made to the Zinc Plant in order to contain all effluent within the circuit, a problem developed with control of both the water and sulphate balance of the circuit. A new neutralisation plant to treat all cell house waste water so that it can be contained within the circuit has been developed and installed. In addition changes have been made to the existing circuit to control deliberately the circuit sulphate concentration by precipitation of sodium and potassium jarosite.

The practice of placing loose rockfill as passive support in open stoping voids, of narrow vein mineral deposits, lends itself to the sterilisation of substantial mining reserves in the requirement for regional crown/sill pillars. Significant benefits are to be gained by the Australian mining industry via the development of improved guidelines for the extraction of such sterilised mine pillars. The application of selectively injecting specifically developed ettringite (calcium sulphoaluminate hydrate) type cement grout into loose rockfill, enables an artificial pillar to stabilise the surrounding rockmass and prevent the caving of loose rockfill from the previously backfilled void during extraction of remnant crowdsill pillars. This paper presents the results of laboratory testing used to reduce the technical risks associated with the design of cemented rockfill pillars. A laboratory testing program was devised to investigate the critical parameters influencing the performance of a stabilised rockfill matrix, along with the critical parameters influencing the interpretation of laboratory test samples. The factors investigated include; sample size and shape, particle size distribution, curing time, water quality, cement : water ratio and the confinement effect.

The mixture of carbon dioxide and water vapor - called Soda [as in carbonated water] can be converted to easily stored transportation fuels. Earlier papers on Soda- fuel metallurgy noted that this conversion is endothermic requiring energy. Reduced state metallic elements - preferably the alkali, alkaline earth elements, or aluminum can act as oxygen carriers. Availability of such a combination in commonly land fille waste materials is shown. Plant based wastes which are normally composted form a better-controlled reagent. The energy required for the reaction can come from solar energy. This paper describes possible reactor designs, which can accommodate this conversion effectively using carbon dioxide recovered from flue gases.

The operation of a one tonne submerged combustion pilot plant for the recovery of copper from anode furnace and converter slags is described and the effects of variables discussed. Using coal as reductant, copper levels of anode furnace slag were lowered to 1% or less, with batch times of approximately 120 minutes. Fluxing with limestone was required to produce a fluid slag at temperatures of 1200 - 1300¦C. For converter slags, reduction to 0.5% Cu or less was achieved in batch times of 35 minutes. THE purpose of this paper is to present certain facts relating to Cordilleran differentiation and metallization. Theoretical discussions concerning the exact modus operandi of differentiation, the causes that led up to it, and the original distribution of the magmas have been omitted because the author feels that his knowledge is deficient. These subjects have been adequately treated in the admirable works of Iddings, Daly, Harker, Tyrrell, Shand, and Wolff. The facts here set forth seem to indicate that differentiation and metallization form one continuous process during the eastward movement of the magmas, culminating in the alkaline province of the eastern border of the Cordilleran Ranges.

The Mining Regulatory Affairs review arrived in time for the May issue. The Managing Editor inadvertently buried it in one of his paper piles. Regulatory developments at the federal level involving the minerals industry solid waste disposal under the Resources Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) remained at the forefront of concern. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) received public comments on two major documents. One was a strawman draft rule covering wastes from mining and beneficiation. The other was a report to congress covering selected mineral processing wastes. The regulation of minerals industry waste management is moving forward on parallel paths. Mining and beneficiation waste is somewhat further advanced.

The Bruce Museum is an art, science and natural history museum in Green- wich, Connecticut. The museum was originally built as a private residence in 1853, and has undergone several reno- vations, the most recent dating to 1992. The current renovation is part of a $60 million capital expansion plan for the "New Bruce." The renovation includes a 43,000 sf (4,000 m2), three-story addition that will more than double the size of the museum, adding space for new ex- hibitions, education and community spaces. The proposed bottom of the foundations for the renovation sit up to 16 ft (5 m) below the Bruce Museum's existing shallow foundations.

It has been reported that expanded poIystyrene and ANFO prills ‘were mixed on a blasting site for controlled blasting (ISANOL). Although there seems to be few possibility of their segregation because mixing on a blasting site is done, there is a great possibility of segregation in packing, transportation and loading of the product due to the different densities of the two ingredients in Japan where mixing on a blasting site still remains inoperative. The fiee-flowing property of ANFO prills was lost with the passage of time because the Abel oil infiltrated into the expanded polystyrene and that gave the product high viscosity.

IKE'S amiable expression and apparent sincerity impressed AIME members as did the theme of his talk. Cautioning against the gradually increasing power of the federal government, he said: . . . "freedom as we know it is in no greater danger from without than it is from our own lack of understanding of this creeping paralysis from within." Next February, it will be three years since he uttered these words at Annual Meeting welcoming ceremonies, but the theme was oft repeated in his winning campaign. This brush with the exalted, brief though it was, makes Washington look friendlier to many AIME members than it has for years.

The outcome of these tests has been twofold. They have served to demonstrate that the tiltmeter is a useful and dependable instrument which could prove to be of significant value in reaching the goals of landslide prediction and control, and they have raised a good many more questions about the mechanism of slides than they have answered. It seems likely that many of the old concepts and assumptions will be modified or discarded as more knowledge of actual field phenomenon is gained. Safety and economy are paramount concerns in determining slope stability. These two considerations govern the feasibility and character of slope construction from start to finish.

Polymer and surfactant dispersant are widely used to disperse filler particles within a medium. Sur- faces active dispersants form self-assemble structures at the solid-liquid interface. The mechanical properties of the surfactant structures have been determined to strongly influence the dispersion behavior. In this study the atomic force microscope (AFM) is used to determine the elastic modulus and yield strength of a steric dispersant layer adsorbed to a rigid non-deformable surface. To interpret these values a model for elastic body contact based on a modified Hertz theory is applied. The results from this method may aid in the design of application-based dispersant systems.
