Few topics in the blasting industry are more controversial than the proper riming procedure for large-diameter ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) charges, despite the considerable amount of research that has been done both in the laboratory and in the field. The January, April, and June 1975 issues of Emphasis on Blasting contain interesting discussions on priming (5). An ideal primer is one that will surely and efficiently initiate the AN-FO column at the correct location to assure optimum blasting performance. During the 20 years of AN-FO's existence, singlepoint priming, axial priming, multiple-point priming, thermal priming, and shock riming have all been advocated as the "optimum" method. This is not surprising because blasting specialists have often differed on even the most fundamental concepts. To define the optimum primer, we must know what detonation characteristics in the AN-FO column are most desirable. Again, authorities disagree. This paper will discuss conclusions of various studies in an attempt to clear up some of the confusion.

A significant development in the theory of countercurrent extraction will be presented in this article. A new term in countercurrent extraction process analysis, "Adjacent Stage Impurity Ratio" (ASIR), is proposed, and its expression is deduced. Furthermore, based on the term together with mass balance and extraction equilibrium, the conditions where a given countercurrent extraction separation operation can have minimum amounts of both extracting solvent and scrubbing agent solution can be estimated, and the equations of the two minimum amounts can be deduced. It was found that the equations for a two-component separation using a single aqueous or organic feed are exactly the same as they appeared in the theory initially established in the 1970s. Unlike its earlier version, the present derivation does not involve feed-stage-composition hypothesis, and also has the advantage of dealing with a double-feed system where both aqueous and organic feeds are simultaneously employed whereas the earlier theory can only analyze a separation using a single aqueous or organic feed.

Traditionally, the Lead Lode at Broken Hill has been represented on presentation plans, cross sections and diagrams in scientific papers as a solid black mass, around which the more 'interesting' and 'structurally useful', wall rocks appear to wrap. Structural analysis of the Broken Hill orebodies has usually turned to these wall rocks to determine the structural history of the mineralisation.This tendency to represent the orebody as a massive single entity is incorrect and the aim of this paper is to illustrate that sulphide orebodies (in this case Lead Lode), are a dynamic part of the mine stratigraphy. They can preserve a great deal of useful structural information that can be recorded with detailed internal mapping.Three main categories of ore type are recognised in Lead Lode; Stratiform ores, Mobilised ores and Metasomatically altered ore. The ore types in these categories occupy or have formed in distinct structural and stratigraphic positions and have clearly recognisable inter-relationships.

A Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) gera diversos resíduos metálicos de diferentes granulometrias que não podem ser utilizadas na rota natural da produção do aço. Este trabalho tem como objetivo descrever o pioneirismo do desenvolvimento e a implantação de melhorias no sistema de adição em carros torpedos que permitiram a utilização nobre de resíduos ricos em ferro, demonstrando a viabilidade técnica assim como a viabilidade econômica. A redução do consumo de energia é outro argumento para reciclagem de resíduos, neste contexto a CSN tem aumentado o interesse pela reciclagem devido a necessidade de diminuição de consumos energéticos e da consciência ambiental. O processo desenvolvido demonstrou a viabilidade da utilização de metálicos de pequena granulometria pela adição em carros torpedo, aumentando a oferta de ferro gusa líquido para os convertedores da CSN.

F. N. FLYNN, Clifton, Ariz.-I would like to ask Mr. Mathewson what percentage of his leaching liquor is wasted at this time? It has a bearing on the question in connection with the New Cornelia, and I think it is a very important question. E. P. MATHEWSON, Anaconda, Mont.-I am not sure what the percentage is now, but we don't discard the strong liquors. Something like 25 per cent. of the wash water taken out each day is sent over a special set of scrap iron tanks, and the copper recovered there. We had a little trouble at first. We did not proceed to use the sponge iron for the reason that the plant we originally contemplated was abandoned for flotation. Our original idea was to use a leaching process on all the tailings of the mill, but we found it would take a great deal of time to build a plant; and the cost of operating the plant we estimated to be about the same and the recovery the same. It was a question of time with us, and we decided to adopt flotation. That changed our plans. We now have the leaching plant, treating the tailings of the old dump, and the flotation applied to the current tailings. The sponge iron was figured for the large plant. We can get all the scrap iron necessary for the small plant-plenty from the scrap produced in the main plant of the smelter.

I'm on the program to introduce John Peperakis, President of the Institute for this year. I regret to announce that Mr. Peperakis received word this morning of an emergency at his mine and left to attend to this. We hope it is of a minor nature and he will return. However, in the meantime, Robert von Storch has graciously consented to act as president until John Peperakis returns. "I needn't tell you who he is. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo garantir a estabilidade no processo de conformação mecânica das barras redondas laminadas, visando reduzir a geração de produtos não conformes e o número de reclamações de clientes pelo motivo de ovalização. As barras redondas laminadas são utilizadas nas indústrias de trefilação, metal mecânico, agroindústria e em outros componentes industriais. A metodologia utilizada neste trabalho foi DMAIC, (definir, medir, analisar, melhorar e controlar). Esta ferramenta é utilizada para melhoria de processos. Através desta ferramenta foi possível identificar os parâmetros mais influentes na geração de defeitos por ovalização, o que possibilitou a elaboração de um plano de ação direcionado às causas raízes. Após a conclusão do plano de ação, houve redução de 36% em média na geração de produtos não conformes e nenhuma reclamação de cliente foi recebida até o mês de março de 2016, além de uma maior estabilidade do processo durante a laminação deste produto.

Em busca do aumento de produtividade e estabilidade operacional de trefilados e ampliados no setor de acabamento da siderúrgica, na produção de CA60, telas e treliças, foi observado através da metodologia DMAIC a instabilidade operacional no indicador de eficiência do OEE dos equipamentos devido a oscilações de velocidade manual e limitação de velocidade por problemas técnicos. Após as análises de estabilidade nos equipamentos e constatado a necessidade de melhoria do processo foi realizado estudos por meio da técnica de modelagem de Rede de Petri, representando o sistema e modificando a lógica de automação que analisa o status da máquina e a partir desse momento o próprio equipamento toma a decisão segura de acelerar ou desacelerar até a velocidade especificada de “set point” por material produzido, sinalizando antecipadamente ao operador com alarmes visuais e sonoro de forma que o mesmo tenha ciência do que está acontecendo e possa intervir caso julgue necessário. Após a implementação foi capturado um aumento de 6,62% de OEE e 5,5% de produtividade total anual no setor, sem custo de aquisição.

A fractografia óptica é um método eficiente e de baixo custo para o exame de superfícies fraturadas, resultando em uma determinação típica e representativa da superfície de fratura, obtida com rapidez e precisão. O polimetilmetacrilato (PMMA), conhecido como acrílico, é um polímero semicristalino termoplástico de moderada resistência mecânica, leve, de boa conformabilidade, transparente e incolor. Por conter essas propriedades, é considerado um dos polímeros mais modernos sendo utilizado em muitas aplicações de engenharia. Em algumas dessas aplicações, é necessário o conhecimento do seu comportamento sob esforços mecânicos. Este trabalho visa caracterizar as fraturas ocorridas em CPs de PMMA, em ensaios mecânicos de tração uniaxial. As observações das fraturas das amostras ensaiadas mecanicamente foram realizadas com o auxílio de microscopia óptica. É feita a comparação das superfícies de fratura obtidas no ensaio mecânico identificando-se dois tipos de fratura.

OBSERVERS in more than negligible number appear to believe that the achievements of engineers during the last generation have been an affliction rather than a blessing to society. Quite accurately they perceive that scientific progress and technologic advance have reduced to a fraction-often a small fraction-the amount of manual effort required to accomplish a given unit of useful work. They have seen men, as a consequence, deprived of employment in a particular industry; and this so-called technological unemployment they have denounced as inimical to the workers and consequently to the whole social order in progressive nations. To those who subscribe to this thesis the story of the Porphyry Coppers may not make palatable reading, for it is an amazing record of engineering and technologic achievement. But to those others who take the longer and broader view that economic and social progress cannot enduringly lag far behind advance in the realm of science and engineering; and that any improvement in the means and method of doing essential things eventually must make the world a better place in which to live; to these the record of the development of these great mines can- not but be a source of delight. It is an outstanding example of the advantages of mass production coupled with the fruits of scientific research and inventive genius. More, it reflects the pioneer spirit, the initiative, the self-reliance, the independence of thought and action that are traditional with the mining engineer. THE PROCESSES USED FOR THE rolling of zinc are not novel or unique in a mechanical sense. There has not been so widespread a tendency toward heavy slabs and mechanical handling, and toward 3-high and continuous mills as has taken place with steel and with some of the other nonferrous metals. Those respects in which the rolling of zinc differs from the rolling of other metals center around two facts. First, the hexagonal zinc crystal has only one plane of easy slip: namely, the basal plane. Fortunately, however, the crystal twins readily on any of the pyramidal planes, thereby creating new basal planes favorably oriented for relief of the stress which has caused twinning. Second, the recrystallization temperature of zinc is little above room temperature and for very pure grades of zinc may in fact, be at room temperature for severely strained material. The practical effect of these two characteristics of zinc will become evident in the later discussion. First, it is necessary to give some attention to the melting and casting of billets for rolling. Reverberatory furnaces are commonly used for melting. These vary over a wide range of capacity from as low as 5 tons to 100 tons or over. Low-frequency electric furnaces have also been used with satisfactory results. Arc Furnaces are, of course unsuited to a low-melting and lute-boiling metal, such as zinc. To minimize oxidation and volatilization losses in the furnace, the temperature should be kept below 500°C. With this temperature in the melting furnace, a suitable pouring temperature in the neighborhood of 460°C can he maintained at the mold when a transfer ladle is used for pouring.

The regions of New Mexico referred to are in Socorro, Grant, and Dona Ana counties, and a portion of Lincoln County, embracing in the aggregate a very large area, of most of which our knowledge is as yet very fragmentary and superficial. It is only very recently that large portions of this region have been accessible. It has been full of danger from hostile bands of wandering Apaches, whose murderous raids have slain many adventurous miners and seriously prevented developments. But this evil has now been largely abated, and in many of the mining camp of this region there is no longer any danger from this cause. SOCORRO MINES. About three and a half miles back of the old Mexican town of Socorro, on the Rio Grande, chief town of the County of Socorro, are two or more large veins of heavy spar, cutting across the fat* of Socorro Mountain in a northeast and southwest direction, and dip ping at an angle of about forty degrees into the body of the mountain. These veins are in rhyolite, and, so far as could be seen in openings on the Torrence Mine, which I examined, are without any clay parting or selvage. The average thickness of the Torrence rein may be about five feet, the thickness varying from pne or two feet to thirteen feet. El presente texto señala la dotación del cobre en el Perú desde el período 2013, la cual se encuentra ubicada en tres franjas metalogenéticas como son: Paleoceno, Eoceno-Oligoceno y Mioceno. Estas franjas produjeron más de 24 Mt de cobre y aún guardan reservas y recursos que llegan a 192 millones de toneladas. En ese sentido, el futuro de la producción de cobre se encuentra en 18 proyectos mineros, los cuales bajo un escenario optimista ingresan en producción entre 2014 y 2019. Para realizar este trabajo, se ha considerado datos estadísticos de producción global de cobre de la United States Geological Survey, y de la producción nacional de anuarios mineros del Ministerio de Energía y Minas el Perú hasta el año 2013. Los datos de reservas y recursos de operaciones y proyectos se han tomado de reportes anuales de compañías mineras y de exploración en el Perú.

Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo estudar a incorporação da massa da poeira de aciaria elétrica (PAE), mediante adição em ferro-gusa (1,78% Si) à temperatura de 1.400 graus Celsius. A PAE é proveniente de uma usina siderúrgica produtora de aços longos. A adição da PAE ao ferro-gusa líquido será sob a forma como recebido, sob a forma de briquetes sem agitação do ferro-gusa líquido e sob a forma de briquetes com agitação do ferro-gusa líquido. Previamente, a PAE foi caracterizada utilizando-se as seguintes técnicas: análise química, análise granulométrica, área de superfície específica, difração de raios-X, microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e análise de micro-regiões por EDS. A realização dos experimentos de fusão, em escala de laboratório, ocorreu em um forno vertical tubular com controlador de temperatura. Os experimentos de fusão para avaliar a incorporação da massa de PAE utilizaram cadinhos de grafite. Após o resfriamento, ferro gusa e escória remanescentes no cadinho foram pesados objetivando efetuar um balanço de massa. Um fluxo de gás inerte (argônio) foi mantido no interior do forno durante a realização dos experimentos.

O processo de dessulfuração do ferro gusa é uma etapa de grande importância para a fabricação do aço. Diante da necessidade cada vez mais exigente de aplicações nobres, dos aços, faz-se necessário o desenvolvimento e estudos buscando maior eficiência e custos operacionais otimizados para melhores resultados deste processo. O carbureto de cálcio é um insumo utilizado como matéria prima dos agentes dessulfurantes. Através do microscópio de varredura e o EDS, buscou-se estudar e entender o mecanismo de reação do carbureto de cálcio no processo de dessulfuração do ferro gusa líquido, sendo realizado o estudo no Laboratório de Ensaios e Análises em Materiais - LAMAT do SENAI de Itaúna – MG, em conjunto com o setor de pesquisa e desenvolvimento da Tecnosulfur S/A.

PRESIDENT MOSES: I think this will conclude our program for this afternoon, unless you have some- thing else. Mr. Holman, will you tell us what you are doing in the way of your local chapter, around Dawson? W. C. HOLMAN: (Chief Engineer, Phelps-Dodge Corporation, Dawson, New Mexico.) We have organized a local chapter of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute, and we invite all foremen, fire bosses, shot firers or anybody interested, either on the surface or in the mine. I think at the last meeting we had sixty to seventy men present. We hold meetings once a month; usually on a certain set Tuesday or second Friday of the month, or so on. We have a President, a Vice-President and a Secretary-Treasurer. There are no dues connected with it. We aim to take up the' papers that are presented at the various meetings of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute, and also any other subject that would be of interest, connected with our own mining operation. We usually ask two or three men to pre- sent papers, rather than one man. We find it difficult in getting one man to work up any subject, but two or three men work up very interesting papers. While we have just recently organized, we aim to have luncheons in connection with it, and possibly once a year a banquet or .some similar activity that we think would interest the men. We feel it is going to be a great help in carrying on the work of the present organization in presenting the activities around the mines. PRESIDENT MOSES: I thank you, Mr. Holman. Has any one any- thing to bring up at this time? MR. LITTLEJOHN: I would like to ask Mr. Holman if the Institute or the Chapter there is confined to Dawson alone, or open to other camps in New Mexico? MR. HOLMAN: At the present, Mr. Littlejohn, it is just confined to our own camp, although we intend to invite the members and the officials of the other camps later on, perhaps. Especially, if we gave a banquet, no doubt we would invite the others. MR. LITTLEJOHN: Is there any other Chapter in New Mexico besides yours in Dawson, Mr. Holman? MR. Nos últimos anos a indústria automotiva vem conseguindo avançar de forma contínua em relação ao controle da emissão de CO2 e no tocante à segurança veicular. O aumento da utilização de aços de alta resistência mecânica se constitui num dos principais sustentáculos destas melhorias. Além disso, na manufatura de certas peças, em especial as de geometria complexa, é fator crítico de sucesso a capacidade do material em absorver intensas deformações localizadas, tipicamente encontradas em operações de expansão de furo. O aço desenvolvido pela Usiminas é um produto laminado a frio, com revestimento eletrogalvanizado, da classe de 600 MPa de limite de resistência, com boas propriedades de flangeamento de bordas e de alongamento em tração. Neste trabalho, é apresentado o desenvolvimento deste aço. São descritas as suas principais características e os resultados de sua aplicação em uma peça de geometria complexa.

The Companion Policy of NI43101 references the guidelines and states that issuers and Qualified Persons should follow them.Exploration Best Practices GuidelinesPreamble: These guidelines have been prepared to assist the Qualified Person(s) in the planning and supervision of exploration programs which will be reported under National Instrument 43-101. Such exploration programs must be under the supervision of the Qualified Person who will be responsible and accountable for the planning, execution and interpretation of all exploration activity as well as the implementation of quality assurance programs and reporting. These guidelines are also recommended for use in the planning and execution of exploration programs which will not be reported under NI 43-101. This set of broad guidelines or ""best practices"" has been drawn up to ensure a consistently high quality of work that will maintain public confidence and assist securities regulators. The guidelines are not intended to inhibit the original thinking or application of new approaches, that are fundamental to successful mineral exploration.Results should be summarized and reported in a Technical Report of good professional quality in accordance with the National Instrument 43-101 and Form 1 contained in that instrument. All exploration work from which public reporting will ensue must be designed and carried out under the supervision of a Qualified Person (""QP""). A QP is defined in National Instrument 43-101 as an individual who is an engineer or geoscientist with at least five (5) years' experience in mineral exploration, mine development, mine operation or project assessment, has experience relevant to the subject matter of the project or report and is a member in good standing of a recognized professional association."

IT was my intention to have directed the attention of the members of the Institute to a complete series of rocks representing the older and middle formations represented in Pennsylvania, but time has been insufficient for the purpose, and I have been unable, in the first attempts to reduce the sections of those rocks, which I have brought with me to this meeting, to the requisite thinness necessary for exhibiting the peculiarities of their constituent minerals. The rocks represented here belong to the various horizons already mentioned, and include gneiss, ferruginous gneiss, chlorite slate, quartzites, and hydro-mica slates, limestones, dolomites, ferruginous conglomerates, quartz conglomerates, "Potomac marble" (nether member of the Mesozoic series), dolerites, and a syenite. The order in which these are named is, roughly, the order -of geographical position in a section line from southeast to northwest, commencing at the intersection of the Northern Central Railroad with the Maryland line, and ending a few miles from the town of York, and a short distance within the marginal outcrop of Mesozoic red sandstone. In such a geographical section all the rocks above mentioned would be encountered in the given order except syenite, about which a few words are to be said in a moment. (But this is far from representing the rocks in their geological sequence.) There is nothing of unusual interest to present to your notice in these slates and quartzites. The limestones were carefully searched under 450 diameters microscopic power, but they show no signs of organic remains. One section of a fine-grained Triassic sandstone contains a very beau¬tifully banded plate of quartz. But the objects of greatest interest at present are the specimens of trap.
