The use of a unique class of sulfhydryl collectors, the monoalkyldithiocarbamate salts (RNHCS2M) as direct collectors for malchite and azurite is presented. Microflotation and laboratory scale flotation tests were performed to define the collector properties of these reagents under a variety of flotation conditions. On the basis of the results, it is proposed that some property of the amine-hydrogen atom in the reagent has a signification influence on the unusual activity of these collectors for oxide copper minerals.

US 4,185,872-In the solution mining of uranium values from a subterranean uranium ore deposit, a lixiviant comprising sodium sulfate or other alkali metal sulfate and optionally minor proportions of an alkali metal carbonate or bicarbonate and an alkali metal hypochlorite is introduced into the ore to solubilize uranium therein. New technology in video equipment, such as Super Video Tapes, Super Video Camera Recorders equipped with high speed electronic shutters, and VCR's with editing capabilities make it possible to resolve high speed events to still frames with an event elapsed time of 17 milliseconds (ms). This is far from the 2 ms resolution available with a High Speed 16 mm Film Camera such as the LOCAM at its maximum 500 frame persecond speed, but is adequate for many field blast evaluations.

Between 6 and 8 million cars are shredded annually in the U.S. This shredded material is magnetically separated leaving a mixture of nonmetallics and nonferrous metals which can be further separated into its metallic and nonmetallic constituents. The metallic portion is a mixture of metalr; and alloys containing predominately zinc, and some aluminum, copper, and residual iron. Hydrometallurgical strategies are proposed for recovering the aluminum, copper, and zinc. The thermodynamic and kinetic behavior of the most promising alternatives to separation are discussed.

This investigation involves laboratory testing and stability analysis of paste fill at the Golden Giant Mine. Site-cast samples are tested in unconfined, confined, and consolidated-undrained triaxial compression. Pore pressures during shear and consolidation characteristics are measured to determine both drained and undrained shear strength parameters and assess the potential for undrained loading. Liquefaction potential is also considered. A limit equilibrium solution is used to obtain factors of safety against failure of the fill during mining of adjacent stopes.

Chemical dewatering aids for mineral slurries generally fall into two classes: surfactants and flocculants, which can be used separately or together. Current industrial use of both types of reagents is summarized for sulfide and non-metallic minerals, as well as uranium and gold leach residues and coal refuse. Laboratory testing for reagent selection is briefly discussed along with reagent preparation. There are two main aspects of coal preparation to which the operational Research Executive of the National Coal Board has applied computer models. The first is in the planning of preparation plants and the first part of this paper discusses Simprep, a computer package that was designed to help on these calculations. The other is the development of control schemes to improve quality control, and the second part of the paper deals with the development of simulation techniques for this purpose.

O processo de pelotização foi desenvolvido com a finalidade de aproveitar as partículas finas e ultrafinas geradas nas operações de exploração e tratamento do minério de ferro. Os principais minérios que alimentam as usinas de Pelotização de Tubarão/Vitória/ES são provenientes das minas Brucutu, Fábrica Nova, Alegria, Conceição e Cauê. Os estudos de caracterização mineralógica e testes tecnológicos são realizados para auxiliar o processamento de minérios. Entretanto, alguns minérios possuem grande variabilidade de participação de minerais em sua composição, gerando necessidade de ajustes no processamento dos mesmos. Ter a previsibilidade mineralógica dos minérios é muito importante para atuar no processo com antecedência, realizando ajustes operacionais caso necessário, a fim de ganhar qualidade e reduzir custos. O método de cálculo normativo mineralógico é uma técnica nova que utiliza os resultados de análise química como base para quantificar minerais presentes no minério de ferro. O objetivo principal deste trabalho foi avaliar a aplicabilidade da metodologia de cálculo mineralógico normativo por meio de correlação com a microscopia ótica. As amostras analisadas foram pellet feed das minas de Fábrica Nova, Alegria e Brucutu. O estudo mostrou que existem diferenças entre as técnicas, entretanto os resultados foram promissores e satisfatórios.

Ligas Al-Mn-Ce são de grandeinteresse por formaremfases e microestruturasde aplicação promissora, como quasicristais, fase amorfa e ligas cristalinas de alta resistência. Entretanto, pouca atenção foi dada àdeterminação do diagrama de fase desse sistema. Este trabalho apresenta uma avaliação termodinâmica preliminar das fases ternárias Al8Mn4Ce e Al10Mn7Ce2, compostos da região de maior interesse deste sistema:as composições ricas em Al. A avaliação termodinâmica foi feita considerando os dois compostos como fases estequiométricas. A energia livre destas fases foi estimada a partir de dados experimentais obtidos por análise de calorimetria diferencial de varredura, microscopia eletrônica e difração de raios X e as seções isotermas existentes na literatura, empregando ligas obtidas por fusão a arco. Os resultados indicam que foi possível produzir as fases de interesse pela metodologia proposta, e que os parâmetros estimados para a energia livre de ambas as fases permitem reproduzir adequadamente secções isotermas do diagrama ternário em diferentes temperaturas.

As mudanças no plano estratégico de uma organização reverberam por todos os seus setores, gerando demandas de alinhamento estratégico. Entre estes setores estão os de planejamento e programação da manutenção. O presente estudo de caso descreve uma iniciativa de alinhamento estratégico realizada pela equipe de planejamento de manutenção da unidade Ubu da Samarco Mineração S/A, uma empresa de mineração e pelotização de minério de ferro, localizada no estado do Espírito Santo. A partir de uma revisão na estratégia corporativa foram derivados a missão, visão e valores da equipe. Esses por sua vez, serviram de base para uma revisão dos processos de trabalho e para a definição de ações de melhoria. Por fim foram estabelecidos indicadores para mensurar a realização da visão. Os resultados apresentados por esses indicadores comprovam que as equipes de planejamento podem obter e demonstrar resultados significativos através de técnicas elementares de planejamento estratégico.

A textura cristalográfica e a densidade de discordâncias têm um papel importante nas propriedades de vários metais, podendo ser modificada de acordo com os processamentos mecânicos e tratamentos térmicos realizados, além disto, também é influenciada pela estrutura cristalina e energia de falha de empilhamento (EFE). O presente trabalho buscou observar a influência da EFE na textura cristalográfica e na densidade de discordâncias de metais CFC submetidos a laminação a frio. Os materiais usados foram o latão a, cobre e uma liga de alumínio 1050, que possuem baixa, média e alta EFE, respectivamente. Pode-se observar que diferentes níveis de EFE propiciaram, para a mesma redução da espessura após a laminação a frio, distintas texturas nos materiais utilizados e diferentes densidades de discordâncias.

As ligas ß-Ti têm sido consideradas materiais com potencial para armazenagem de hidrogênio no estado sólido. A adição de elementos de liga estabilizadores da fase ß, tal como o Nb, retém esta fase metaestável em temperatura ambiente. Neste trabalho a liga Ti-40Nb (at.%) foi produzida via fusão a arco e suas características microestruturais foram caracterizadas visando avaliar os efeitos da aplicação da deformação plástica severa (SPD, severe plastic deformation) e da hidrogenação. A laminação a frio sob atmosfera de Argônio foi a técnica de SPD escolhida. Os resultados principais mostraram que é possível hidrogenar a liga fundida Ti-40Nb em temperatura ambiente após laminação a frio. Os efeitos da deformação plástica severa na microestrutura da liga, como a introdução de discordâncias, foram importantes para o aperfeiçoamento da cinética de absorção em temperatura ambiente (25 °C). Após a dessorção da fase hidreto (CFC) a microestrutura volta a ser constituída pelas fases ? (CCC) e ?” (ortorrômbica).

The mining of iron ore is a high volume low margin business because the value of this commodity is significantly lower than that of base metals. The main metallurgical challenges in most of the iron ore projects proposed for treatment nowadays have been in finding the optimum flowsheet for the treatment of magnetite ores, mixed magnetite-hematite ores and even ores that have banded ironstone formations (BIF). The associated plant designs incorporate very high capacity milling systems to grind the ore down prior to magnetic separation and in being highly capital intensive requires substantial investment in mega processing plants with associated infrastructure to mill down the run-of-mine ore to the desired treatment size for upgrading.To minimise the cost of infrastructure, better beneficiation techniques and technologies are being sought to assist in reducing upfront ROM feed to allow for reduction in overall treatment plant footprint necessary in extracting the desired downstream product. This paper discusses such beneficiation techniques and advancement in technologies for the upgrading of coarse and fine iron ore utilising dense media separation (DMS), jigging, wet magnetic separation, dry magnetic separation, flotation and x-ray processing.Another group of iron ore projects involve the mining of hematite ore below the water table. Often the mined ore is wet and sticky. This combination requires high capacity processing of feed material utilising large scrubbers or attritioning units to effectively remove the slimes component present in the feedstock. The fines removed, usually below 1 mm, are then discarded in large tailings storage facilities. Approaches to recovering the saleable material contained within these fines will also be investigated in this paper. This not only implies possible reduction in slimes discard footprint, but also holds potential benefit in augmenting overall yield and recovery of hematite product.CITATION:van Niekerk, L M, 2013. Disposal of fine coal refuse is one of the major technical problems which could adversely affect growth and development of the coal industry. At present one of the most: common methods for disposal of fine coal refuse slurry involves impounding the slurry behind dams. However meeting new federal and state government regulations for building, maintaining and reclaiming these impoundments in addition to terrain and space considerations render this technique to be only marginally competitive with other disposal methods. The coal industry has been actively engaged in developing alternate disposal techniques which are economically feasible and environmentally acceptable. A review of coal refuse disposal problem and current refuse disposal practice both in the eastern and western coal fields is presented. Various promising techniques being developed for economical and safe disposal of fine coal refuse slurry are also discussed.

EMR's recently commissioned Pilot Plant in Fredericton, N.B. Canada, the latest and largest in the company's sequence of prototype and demonstration systems, is being used as a process development facility for mining clients worldwide. Fitted with two microwave reactors and 75 kW generators, this plant is designed as a two-stage continuous processor with a throughput in the 5-10 tpd range depending upon the material feedstream. This facility has been used principally to calcine pyrite and arsenopyrite gold concentrates although it can readily accommo­date carbonaceous materials as well as a wide range of other ore types. Engineering details of the plant and the results of the first nine months of operation are presented. The plant has proven very successful as an advanced process development facility as well as a basic production unit module.

A novel technology for leaching copper from primary copper concentrates has been developed at UBC. This patented technology takes advantage of the galvanic couple between pyrite and chalcopyrite to ensure rapid and complete oxidation of chalcopyrite under mild conditions in acidic iron sulfate solution, without the need for microbes, ultrafine grinding, or chemical additives such as chloride, nitrate, or surfactants. Copper recoveries of 98% or greater can be achieved at 80°C under atmospheric conditions in as little as 4 hours of residence time. The process is selective for chalcopyrite over pyrite, generates near-quantitative levels of elemental sulfur, and is fully compatible with conventional solvent extraction and electrowinning of LME Grade A copper cathodes. In this paper, the fundamentals of the Galvanox ? process are reviewed, and selected results of batch leaching tests on various concentrate samples are presented and discussed.

This paper shows the use of tires as fuel to be employed into blast furnaces. The tires can substitute coal or even charcoal in the blast furnaces tuyeres. The injection into tuyeres, besides the contribution for energy generation, can also produce gas for iron oxide reduction. The tires, as powder to be injected into blast furnaces, contributes for an environmental use of this waste, which helps to obtain a high value product as well. So, the advantage of using such material is that it is waste and has lower cost for preparation. The obtained results showed that the tires have good combustibility. This one was obtained in a model that simulates the same conditions occurring in the blast furnaces tuyeres; these used raw materiais include tires and mixtures of tires with coal or even with charcoal.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. has embarked on a continuous improvement effort to ensure that Barrick Gold Corporation will retain its lead in the gold industry in years to come. The continuous improvement initiative is based on careful mapping of the key levers associated with each activity of business. The individual levers are then evaluated to determine their potential to affect the profitability and safety of the operation. The most promising are diagnosed for root causes. These root causes are then addressed to enhance benefits. Through a structured approach of mapping, brainstorming, evaluating and instigating change with follow up measurement and reporting; Barrick Goldstrike is anticipating an increase in throughput at the autoclave facility of 10% with little or no capital expenditure. The resultant approach to Continuous Improvement will be utilized throughout the Goldstrike facility and then throughout Barrick's world-wide operations.
