A trial of an Adept Online Ore Sizer (OOS) was undertaken at the WMC Leinster Nickel Operation (LNO) in the first half of 2000. During this time the On Line Ore Sizer has been shown to be a robust and accurate instrument for measuring mill feed ore size. Data collected during the trial indicates significant variation in the F80 of the SAG mill feed. The effects of feed size on milling parameters such as mill weight, mill power draw and mill efficiency appears to be dependent on the ore blend treated. With some ore blends a weak positive correlation was found between ore size and mill weight and milling efficiency but with others no correlation is evident. It is believed that the OOS will become a vital piece of equipment in the future as LNO continues to optimises its milling circuit.

A necessidade da aplicação dos aços de alta dureza é recorrente nas indústrias de mineração, visto que esses equipamentos são submetidos continuamente a esforços mecânicos. Por isso o objetivo deste trabalho é caracterizar uma amostra de aço Hardox 450 HB soldada pela técnica undermatching com a finalidade de se avaliar a sua soldabilidade, dureza e microestrutura, qualificando a sua predisposição para o uso fabril. Realizou-se o ensaio de composição química, o ensaio metalográfico e o de microdureza afim de se comparar com os dados de fabricantes deste aço e avaliando com os parâmetros de soldagem aplicados a sua susceptibilidade à propagação de trincas. Observou-se que a microestrutura revelada é a martensita com conformação de grãos mais refinados entre o metal de base e o metal de adição. Através da análise química percebeu-se que de acordo com o valor do carbono equivalente, este aço possui média soldabilidade.

THE kaolins of the southeastern United States were known to civiliza-tion as early as the latter part of the eighteenth century-and yet the GEORGIA PRODUCTION UNITED STATES PRODUCTION IMPORTS Fig. 1.-KAOLIN PRODUCTION AND IMPORTS. commercial history of Georgia kaolins may be said to begin in the year 1900. The U. S. Bureau of Mines reported for that year a production of 6885 tons of "miscellaneous" clays in Georgia. A comparison of these figures with those of 1934, when the production rose to 284,556 tons (65 per cent of the domestic production), indicates the growing economic and technologic importance of this raw material. Fig. 1 clearly shows that a part of the increase is due to a normal growth in the use of kaolinitic clays and a part is due to replacement of clays formerly imported.

Mining companies around the world are seeking methods to coordinate operations between the mine and the concentrator to achieve an overall improvement in enterprise performance. In several instances very significant increases in productivity (more than 20 per cent) and profitability (more than $US 10M per annum) have resulted from such efforts. The key to realising these large benefits has for the most part arisen from improved communication between mining operations and plant operations personnel and the judicious use of new tools to evaluate alternatives for improvement and to minimise the risk of implementation. This paper presents a systematic approach to mine-to-mill optimisation . The importance of systemic thinking and systems optimisation methodologies is emphasised. New tools for evaluating operational performance are discussed. Recently reported benefits are summarised. Finally current research is discussed and projections for the future are given.

The object of underground excavation--apart from mining-- is to create an opening to serve as a part of some useful structure. The value of the opening lies in its conformity to the design configuration and its stability during the planned life of the structure. The wire saw could be used to excavate openings of high value at a cost competitive with present methods. First, a discussion of present methods will be used to explain where wire sawing fits in and how it should be applied. PRESENT EXCAVATION METHODS Tunnel Boring A recent advance in tunneling technology is the use of mechanical boring machines. There are many ways that a boring machine can reduce the cost of a tunnel or increase its value. I will mention a few of the advantages that have been demonstrated in tunneling projects. A tunnel can be bored without overbreak, allowing concrete lining to be poured to the design thickness without waste. Boring creates a minimum of disturbance to the tunnel wall, preserving the natural strength of the rock and reducing the amount of support which must be installed to maintain stability. A boring machine maintains the tunnel at its full dimensions and proper shape, and it leaves no rock projecting from the wall which must be trimmed off. The use of boring machines is presently limited to openings of uniform cross section and great length. If the previously mentioned attributes of mechanical boring could be applied to excavation of a wide variety of chambers and passages, then a corresponding decrease in cost and gain in value would be possible for chambers.

Practically all tin-base babbitt metals used in engine bearings are made to customers' specifications, which are many and varied. The copper ranges from 3 to 8 per cent. and the antimony from 4 to 13 per cent.; generally, the babbitt with lower copper content will contain from 4 to 8 per cent. antimony and that with higher copper will have from 7 to 13 per cent. antimony. The allowable lead content varies from 0.20 to 2.00 per cent. If a solder is used as a bonding material instead of tin, the resulting material in the finished bearing will have a higher lead content, but it would not be enough to bring the lead above specifica-tional limits. Impurities such as iron, arsenic and bismuth should be determined in the tin before using to insure a uniform and high-grade product. These points must be considered when segregating and grading the waste that comes from the finishing operations on lined bearings. Classification of SCRAP Because of the extremely rigid nature of most of the specifications for bearing linings it is necessary to use the purest of materials as a base for all compositions. The problem of handling secondary metals is confined almost entirely to the recovery of drosses, spills and turnings incident to the manufacturing operations. As a matter of convenience the waste or scrap may be divided into 10 grades, as follows: 1. Tin from pots where tinning operation is carried out. 2. Tin and babbitt spatters from babbitting operation. - 3. Tin skimmings combined with burned zinc chloride. 4. Borings and reamings. 5. Gates from die-cast bushings and bearings. 6. Drosses from die-cast pots, babbitt foundry pots, and pots in babbittiug room. 7. Babbitt with small amount of bronze from machining operations. 8. Babbitt and bronze borings. 9. Scrap bronze-back babbitt-lined bearings. I 10. Scrap die-cast bearings and bushings. Esse trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar o equipamento de medição automática de placas desenvolvido pela ArcelorMittal Tubarão na área de condicionamento de placas. Anteriormente este processo era realizado de forma manual pelos inspetores. Esse equipamento visa facilitar a rotina de trabalho do inspetor e aumentar a qualidade da medição, assim como diminuir a dispersão dos dados eliminando a divergência nas medições das placas que se verificava entre diferentes operadores, além de possibilitar a criação de um histórico das medidas de toda placa. Para validação do equipamento o mesmo foi submetido a um sistema de analise de medição e teve seu resultado aprovado, no momento atual o mesmo se encontra em funcionamento para se realizar uma comparação estatística do seu desempenho em relação aos inspetores..

Peças fabricadas em aos inoxidáveis austeníticos permanecem íntegras em ambientes corrosivos severos, ambientes industriais, marítimos, na presença de ácidos e gases oxidantes. Entretanto, quando o sua a aplicação além de requerer resistência à corrosão relativamente alta, necessite de boas propriedades em termos de resistência ao desgaste sua utilização se torna restringida. Este trabalho teve como objetivo o estudo da melhoria dessas propriedades restritivas e o aprimoramento da técnica, através do aumento da dureza superficial dos aços inoxidáveis austeníticos AISI 316, utilizando cementação a plasma frio. Para tanto foram propostos tratamentos na temperatura de 350°C, 5hrs, 340 Pa, variando a composição do gás de tratamento. As análises dos produtos de cementação foram feitas utilizando técnicas de caracterização estrutural, difração de raios-X, medidas de perfis de dureza e ensaios microabrasivos. Todas as condições apresentaram melhorias na resistência ao desgaste e na dureza, entretanto o aumento da concentração de metano na atmosfera de trabalho promoveu a formação de fuligem, promovendo regressão das propriedades conforme se elevava a concentração de metano nos processos.

Cleaning of three coals from the eastern US was tested by five selective agglomeration processes and one selective flocculation process. The coals and processes are described, and the results are reported and compared. Benchmarking of mining operations has been in vogue for a number of years: it seems teams are forever flying around the world to try to understand what other operations are doing. However, unless a benchmarking exercise involves data gathering at a fundamental level and a rigorous analysis process is applied, the trip will be nothing more than industrial tourism. When benchmarking is performed thoroughly, the range of comparisons that can be made is extensive and informative, and need not be restricted to sites with similar conditions and equipment fleets. This paper describes the detailed and rigorous process for benchmarking used throughout AMC benchmarking studies. The paper demonstrates how, through drilling down to the underlying drivers, the often heard cry of æyou canÆt compare us, weÆre differentÆ can be overcome. Included in the discussion are a number of significant issues that have been identified during AMC benchmarking studies. The paper then considers the types of opportunities that have been identified and the potential for improvement. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications for planning, measuring and management of operational performance.

This paper describes a new wave equation analysis program called ZWAVE, which is a program specifically for external combustion hammers. The program is de-scribed in detail, the discussion dealing with topics concerning the program such as 1) the numerical method the program uses to integrate the wave equation, which is different from most other wave equation programs; 2) the modelling process of both cushioned and cushionless hammers; 3) the automated generation of mass and spring values for both hammer and pile; 4) the method of dealing with plastic cushions; 5) the use of a recently developed model for computing shaft resistance during driving; 6) the computation and generation of values based on basic soil properties such as shear modulus, Poisson's Ratio and soil density; 7) the completely interactive method of feeding data to the program; 8) the method used to compute the anticipated rebound and the energy used to plastically deform the soil; and 9) the format of the inter-active input of the program and the program's output. Sample problems for the program, along with comparison of the program results with data gathered in the field, are presented.

We are indeed fortunate to have such excellent speakers this morning, some of the outstanding people in the mining industry. I know I express the feelings of the entire RMCMI when I say thanks to these excellent speakers for all of the time and trouble they have taken to prepare such talks and come here to give these presentations of some of the more modern developments with which we in the coal mining industry are concerned. The first speaker this morning is going to give a paper on a subject which has only recently caused one or two of unfortunate accidents. It hadn't, prior to this, been considered such a serious problem. However, the. The little village, from which this formation receives its name, is situated on a bluff of the Alabama River, 175 feet above water level. This bluff is a portion of high table land that begins in the western portion of Choctaw and extends through Clarke and Monroe counties. We find points on this ridge more than 100 feet higher than Tuscaloosa, and nearly as high as the Tennessee River at Tuscumbia. Through this the Alabama River cuts its way, exposing a beautiful cross-section of the strata, of which the accompanying sketch may give some idea. The fossils are found about 75 feet below the surface and 100 feet above the level of the river. There are seven distinct strata. 1. The lowest, extending from the water's edge up the bluff 80 feet, is a soft calcareous rock containing about 15 per cent. of carbonate of lime, with occasional specks of mica. In this a few Ostrea, Turritellæ, and Flustræ were found, but so friable as to fall to pieces when handled. 2. Next comes a stratum varying from 2 to 8 feet, consisting of
