Kaolin clays from five different commercial deposits in Georgia were studied to understand the variations of zeta potential and related fundamental properties. The results suggest that higher negative zeta potential is related to exchangeable or soluble calcium ions in the clays.

The New Celebration Gold Mine is located 32 km south of the regional mining centre of Kalgoorlie. The current mill throughput is 1.7 million tonnes per annum with a gold production of around 120,000 ounces per year. The main source of ore for the mill comes from the Hampton Boulder and Pernatty pits. Over the last two years the oxide reserves from these pits have been depleted and the harder primary sulphide ores are now being processed. This change has led to a decrease in cyanide extractable gold.

In the author's selenium report of 1994 (1), the literature was culled for selenium removal technologies that had a chance of producing effluents with <10 ppb of total selenium. Very few processes could achieve such low concentrations. The EPA dictates such low concentrations. Discharges to fishery waters must be <5 ppb total selenium. The federal max­imum contaminant level ( MCL) for drinking water is 50 ppb. The EPA regulations are for total selenium, not for the species, perhaps because an approved EPA assay method is atomic absorption and it cannot distinguish between species.

The determination of the &quot;optimum pit limit&quot; of a mine has long been considered as a fundamental problem of mine planning. A number of mathematical techniques have been proposed to solve this problem some of the more elaborate ones posing considerable computational difficulties for their implementation. Barnes and Johnson recently introduced &quot;bounding techniques&quot; to ease the computational effort required for determining the optimum pit. The aim of this paper is to point out and correct some errors in their techniques. A presentation of a general bounding algorithm is given.

A control algorithm was developed previously for loading coal trains such that each car met customer specifications (Ganguli, 2001). In developing the algorithm, the effect of the variance of coal was not investigated. This paper explores the effect of the variability of coal on the algorithm using two approaches: theoretical analysis and simulation. Both approaches demonstrate that variance is not an issue when the customer quality specification is close to the mine average quality. However, when they are far apart, the performance of the algorithm improves with variance.

The causes and impact of stability problems associated with longhole open stoping (LHOS) at The Zinc Corporation, Limited (ZC) and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) are discussed and LHOS stability objectives presented. Seven formulas commonly used to evaluate industrial screening efficiency are investigated to determine if they are suitable for calculating the efficiency of rectangular-hole screens. Six formulas were found to be limited in application to square-hole screens. The seventh, although acceptable for evaluating rectangular-hole as well as square-hole screening efficiency, was found to be unwieldy. A new formula is developed based on the concept of misplaced sizes. This proposed formula permits the single step determination of efficiency and is applicable to all types of screening applications.

Mine closing methods should be carefully considered. If not properly sealed, an abandoned mine may continue to produce acid water. Since 60 to 90 percent of the total acid discharged from all coal mines is from abandoned mines,(58) some states require that provisions for sealing be contained in the mining permit application. Closing an operation to prevent harmful mine drainage into nearby runs and streams is a subject of much concern to states as a result of continuing problems from long abandoned mines which were improperly closed.

Innovative concepts in drilling and blast design have been used to remove deteriorated concrete and have enabled contractors to reduce costs and time on St. Lawrence Seaway rehabilitation projects. Time is of the essence on these contracts since the Seaway system is only available for this work during the winter freeze up. Unique electrical sequential initiation systems and specially modified drilling equipment have been used to accurately remove a narrow slice from the 83 foot high lock walls. These new methods successfully reduced demolition time, minimized overbreak and adhered to strict vibration limits.

The accurate prediction of possible damage to historic structures subjected to blasting-related ground motions is not infrequently the dominant factor in whether or not a mining or quarrying operation is allowed to proceed. A recent scenario involving an 1802 Pennsylvania Historic House was resolved satisfactorily, primarily because of the use of modern structural dynamics analysis techniques rather than simplistic peak particle velocity guidelines. One of the associated dominating factors was the truly significant agreement of the analysis results and the values obtained from actual on-site test shot blast motion recordings.

Preliminary calculations suggest that spoil piles in the Bowen Basin will undergo approximately 4 m settlement as the ground water table recovers after mining is abandoned. Approximately 1 m of differential settlement is possible. Superimposed on this will be a long term creep settlement of 1-3 m/log cycle of time. Depending on the nature of the spoil material, partially submerged spoil piles could be sufficiently stable although to ensure stability during long term creep it may be necessary to flatten the final spoil pile face to approximately 25¦.

One of the major impacts of using modern mechanised systems of mining is the production of large amounts of extraneous dirt intermixed with the Run of Mine output. The paper out- lines a proposed system of utilizing liquid tailings from coal mines to replace imported cementitious materials used in ground control and various other safety measures. A geotech- nical and cost assessment of the proposed system are also included. The paper concludes that it is possible to utilize processed tailings to cost effectively replace imported packing material for ground control.

The Paleoproterozoic Hitura Ni-Cu deposit in western Finland is in an ultramafic igneous complex composed of two subvertical plug-shaped bodies embedded in intensely migmatised felsic gneisses. The ultramafic complex is not far from a north-south trending graphitic and sulphidic gneiss zone interpreted to be a primary sulphide-graphite unit in the metasedimentary sequence. The sulphide accumulation exists as a zone parallel to the contact of the northern ultramafic body. The ultramafic rock types, now mainly serpentinites, have primarily been olivine adcumulates in the core grading to olivine orthocumulates and pyroxenites towards the margins. Coarse-grained felsic pegmatite veins injected serpentinite where they now exhibit prominent zoned alteration rims of chlorite, antophyllite and talc. The serpentinite core of the body was primarily an olivine adcumulate derived from a tholeiitic or high-Mg basalt parental magma with about 11 wt % MgO. Metamorphism and alteration have totally changed the igneous mineral compositions and the rock types are serpentinites (from olivine adcumulates), ambhibole-bearing serpentinites and amphibole-chlorite rocks (from pyroxenites). As the result of CO2 alteration talc is an accessory mineral throughout the serpentinite. Like silicates, also sulphide minerals are altered. In the core of the body the low-grade sulphide dissemination still reveals primary igneous interstitial forms. The core sulphides are now mackinawite, pentlandite and valleriite instead of primary igneous pyrrhotite and pentlandite derived from Mss. At the marginal zone the heavy dissemination and net-textured sulphides display pyrrhotite-pentlandite-magnetite intergrowths with magnetite films along cleavage of sulphides, mackinawite in pentlandite and exsolution textures of different low-temperature pyrrhotite phases as the result of alteration processes. Mechanically weak rocks, complicated structures and textures of the ore, magnetite and mackinawite intergrowths in pentlandite and readily-floating MgO silicates cause problems in exploitation of the deposit. The transgressive sedimentary sequence of the Notnnea Basin contains rhyolitic lavas and less voluminous mafic and intermediate volcanims of shoshonitic affinities which erupted simultaneously during the late Cretaceous. The shoshonitic volcanism shows a trend from early inafic to younger evolved intermediate lithologies. The rhyolites are consistently calc- alkaline. There is no evidence of &apos;mixing, of, the two magma types. The shoshonitic volcanism is the result of a short-lived subduction event related to sprcadime in the New Caledonia Basin and involved reactivation of an earlier Mesozoic subduction zone.

The coal industry, despite reach- ing a 22-year high in production (590 million tons), has been tagged as having its back to the wall vis-a-vis its valiant attempts to quench the nation&apos;s still unabated craving for coal. What must be even more reassuring to the industry, infected once with rumors of a uranium takeover, is a nation&apos;s almost insatiable appetite for electricity. Between 1967 and the summer of 1970, utility stockpiles were being gobbled up, diminishing to 79% of the January 1968 level.

The effect of using an anionic collector, Reagent 308, a sodium petroleum sulfonate, with a cationic collector, Armac T, a tallow, fatty acid amine acetate, was studied in a series of monomineralic flotation trials with the alkali feldspars and heavy minerals, ilmenite, rutile, garnet, and monazite. This combination of cationic and anionic collectors is employed to float feldspar and heavy minerals from quartz in the beneficiation of sand in Normanville, South Australia, to produce a suitable quartz sand for glassmaking. In the alkali feldspar trials, Armac T additions were held constant, while the 308 additions were varied. In the heavy mineral trials, the 308 was held constant while the Armac T was varied. Peak enhancement of the feldspar recovery was noted when the 308 additions were between 25% and 150% that of the Armac T additions. At higher 308 addition, depression of feldspar flotation occurred. This appears to be due to a neutralizing effect in the combined collector system and to the formation of a nondissociating complex of both collectors. This variability in flotation response when Armac T is used with 308 suggests that the two collectors do not act independently of each other.
