Com o passar dos anos observa-se uma mudança nas características mineralógicas dos minérios de ferro lavrados nas novas minas da Samarco Mineração SA. De acordo com levantamentos podem ser constatadas mudanças nos percentuais da hematita porosa, hematita especular e da goethita na constituição do concentrado de minério de ferro. Pode-se verificar uma tendência de aumento do percentual de goethita bem como do PPC (perda por calcinação) característica intrínseca ao minério. Estes fatos implicam em uma maior dificuldade da concentração em garantir a qualidade da polpa de minério bombeada para as usinas de pelotização, visto que fatores como a granulometria do minério (partículas menores que 325#) e a superfície específica são afetadas pela mineralogia. Por consequência, há uma maior dificuldade no processo de filtragem para obtenção do pellet feed com a faixa de umidade necessária para o processo de pelotamento e queima. De outra forma, o aumento do PPC dificulta o processo de secagem das pelotas no forno de pelotização, exigindo um maior aporte térmico para retirada da água residual contida nos cristais que não evaporam a 100°C. Todos estes fatores contribuem para a qualidade da pelota queimada, interferindo na sua resistência física como compressão a frio e tamboramento. Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo apontar as variáveis que influenciam significativamente o tamboramento, para propor ações que melhorem o controle do processo produtivo de forma a buscar o ponto de equilíbrio entre qualidade e produção.

A produção de cânulas, materiais utilizados na fabricação de dispositivos médicos, é feita a partir de uma tira de aço inoxidável 304L laminado em tubos e posteriormente soldado por processo GTAW. Após esse procedimento, o tubo sofre uma série de passes de trefilação com recozimento e sem recozimento, para diminuir seu diämetro. Por fim, são realizadas as etapas de corte, apontamento e limpeza do material. Durante a trefilação, uma série de defeitos chamados “GOUGE” é encontrada, provocando altas perdas nos processos, em função das desconformidades com as especificações técnicas. Inicialmente, no intuito de caracterizar e detectar possíveis causas dos defeitos foram analisadas as características do processo, desde a soldagem até a trefilação sem recozimento. Em seguida, foram feitas análises com microscopia de varredura, para avaliar algumas características metalúrgicas do material. Como o objetivo era caracterizar o defeito, diversas causas possíveis surgiram, como a influência da corrente ou velocidade de soldagem, temperatura de tratamento juntamente com as reações do gás Amônia na geração das desconformidades, a velocidade de trefilação ou a quantidade de óleo lubrificante. Concluiu-se que o processo de soldagem não foi o causador da falha, bem como a trefilação sem recozimento. A possibilidade da causa da descontinuidade ficou com o processo de trefilação com recozimento. Assim, diversas propostas para trabalhos futuros surgiram.

Dear Member: The Proceedings for the Institute for the past year are enclosed. We hope you will read them, for there are some good ideas expressed, and the papers are far above the average. The job of publishing the Proceedings has always worried the Secretary. The Secretary, being at the same time the Treasurer, has to pay the bills, and this time he enlisted the co-operation of some of our friends. You will find this co-operation shown in the ads in the proceedings. Read the ads just as carefully, even more so, than you do the text. They carry messages from our friends. Don't forget the winter meeting in Denver, the last of February, the 26, 27 and 28. Another good paper to be read then will be that of A. L. Jones on the subject of "Power Problems of the Coal Mine." The aluminous nature of the laterites capping the Minim Martap plateaus - named after two neighbouring villages - and the small nearby upland of Ngaoundal, was discovered by the Cameroon Mines and Geology Division in 1958. These deposits of worldwide importance, are located in the Ngaoundere region, some 500 km (300 miles) north-east from the port of Douala (as the crow flies). They constitute the major part of the Cameroonese mining potential. The study of the deposits and their economic development has been entrusted to SEBACAM, Societe d'Etudes des Bauxites du Cameroun, a company in which the Cameroon government participates. The bauxites originate from the transformation into laterite of lavas which covered a Precambrian basement during the Upper Cretaceous period and the Lower Tertiary era. The entire Minim Martap deposit comprises bauxite plateaus ranging in area from a few acres to several square miles. The average thickness of the bauxite layer varies from 10 metres at Minim Martap to 17 metres at Ngaoundal. The mineral constituents of the bauxite are gibbsite trihydrate, kaolinite and the usual iron and titanium oxides. Treatment of the ore does not involve any particular technical problems. Proven exploitable reserves amount to 560 million tonnes of dry bauxite with a reactive silica content of 1.80% and an available alumina content of 43.70% at Minim Martap, and 120

This paper presents results from pilot-scale and field testing of an innovative technology that uses sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) to treat and control acid mine drainage (AMD). Sulfate-reducing bacteria, a common group of anaerobic bacteria, produce hydrogen sulfide and bicarbonate when supplied with sources of carbon and sulfate. Hydrogen sulfide reacts with metal ions in AMD, precipitating them as metal sulfides. The bicarbonate produced serves to help neutralize the drainage. Pilot-scale metal-removal efficiencies reached 99% for zinc, 99% for aluminum, 96% for manganese, 98% for cadmium and 96% for copper. However, the iron and arsenic removals were not as effective as the aforementioned metals. This was largely attributed to high levels of iron and arsenic that contaminating the organic substrate. There was evidence that both adsorption and sulfate reduction were occurring within the reactors. The SRB field demonstration involved using the flooded subsurface mine workings of the Lilly/Orphan Boy Mine near Elliston, MT, as an "in situ biological reactor." In the mine, high removal efficiencies were observed for aluminum, cadmium, copper and zinc (70% to near 100%) during the four years of monitoring. However, for reasons similar to the pilot scale testing, low removal efficiencies were observed for arsenic and iron. Sulfate reduction was evident by measured decreases in sulfate and the detection of soluble sulfide within the mine water.

The dealings between concentrated capital invested in the conduct of our various industries and the combinations of labor known as "trade union organizations," have produced not only in the United States, but abroad, many novel methods of negotiation between employers and wage-workers. The size and strength of these organizations have destroyed the personal elements formerly governing the dealings between employer and employee, and have produced various forms of trade-agreements now in more or less successful operation. The difficulty, however, has been to secure consent of both parties to an equitable agreement. For this purpose there have been devised various forms of arbitration, either compulsory under the shadow of governmental legislation, or voluntary by mutual agreement. But these have not been altogether successful from a technical stand-point, for the reason that a compromise has generally been necessary, and in an effort to reach an agreement, terms have been made which have been neither fair nor satisfactory to either of the contending parties. The Anthracite Board of Conciliation represents one of the few thoroughly successful courts for the settlement of trade-disputes, if not the only one which has yet been evolved. Neste trabalho, foi avaliada a influência da temperatura de bobinamento após a laminação de tiras a quente em escala industrial na Usiminas, usina de Ipatinga, na microestrutura, na dureza e nas propriedades mecânicas em tração de um aço ARBL da classe de 800 MPa de limite de resistência mínimo. Verificou-se que a microestrutura, a dureza e as propriedades mecânicas em tração (limite de escoamento, de resistência e alongamento) foram pouco afetadas pela variação de temperatura de bobinamento na faixa estudada, entre 470°C e 680°C. Esse resultado está relacionado com o perfil de resfriamento aplicado no processo industrial, que gerou microestruturas formadas predominantemente por uma matriz ferrítica, com pequena quantidade de perlita e bainita. Como a temperatura de início de formação de martensita para o material estudado se encontra abaixo da menor temperatura de bobinamento aplicada, não houve formação significativa dessa fase.

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralisation related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. The massif contains large chromite bodies of "Alpine-type", ophiolitic affinity. Orebodies reach thicknesses of 150 m and sizes of more than 150 000 000 t chromite ore with average grades of 55-60 wt% Cr2O3. Chromites in the Main ore field are low-Al, high-Cr spinels which exhibit some variation in their Mg-Fe distribution. This differs markedly from high-Al spinels in peridotite host rocks and in narrow chromite pods which occur in the western and northern parts of the massif. Chromites carry silicate inclusions, often hydrous silicates such as amphibole. Chromites in massive chromitites contain micron size inclusions of platinum group minerals (PGM). Composite grains containing two PGM and, occasionally, a hydrous silicate are common. Os-Ir alloys rimmed by PGM sulpharsenides occur in narrow serpentine veinlets that cut chromite and are evidence for the reconcentration of PGE concomitant with introduction of As, probably during serpentinisation. Whole-rock PGE contents are highest in massive chromitites of Diamond Pearl mine (totals of 500 ppb). Chondrite-normalised PGE patterns of chromitites show negative slopes which are typical for ophiolitic, podiform chromitites in mantle sequences. The PGE patterns of host rocks are flat and rather depleted compared with those of chondrites and chromitites. Petrological data from unaltered host peridotites suggest a high temperature overprint leading to sub-solidus re-equilibration of olivine and spinel and to the growth of pargasitic and edenitic amphiboles

No cenário econômico mundial atual, cada vez mais as indústrias têm voltado sua atenção para o reaproveitamento de materiais gerados como consequência das ações operacionais, tanto como forma de reduzir custos, como também no caráter de sustentabilidade do negócio. Em uma operação de refino primário em aciaria elétrica, onde o produto é o aço líquido, o antes considerado resido, mas agora denominado de coproduto, a escória, passa atuar diretamente no custo final do produto quando esta é processada, e passa a compor a carga fria usada no processo de elaboração do aço. Neste sentido, o estudo deste material se faz necessário para a compreensão de qual será o seu comportamento junto aos processos e quais vantagens e desvantagens da sua aplicação. Neste trabalho, foram feitas as caracterizações de sucatas provenientes de reaproveitamento de escórias produzidas em Forno Elétrico a Arco e em conversor LD, bem como seu impacto no refino primário, como parte integrante da carga fria no FEA.

Uma marcha estável do Alto Forno está bastante ligada à consistência das propriedades químicas, físicas e metalúrgicas das suas matérias-primas, especialmente, do coque. O desafio da produção de coque está em projetar misturas de carvões que produzam coque a custo baixo e com elevada qualidade. Neste contexto, este trabalho visa avaliar a utilização de moinha de carvão vegetal na mistura de carvões reduzindo a necessidade da importação de carvões minerais, mantendo a qualidade requerida pelo Alto Forno, além de desenvolver uma rota para minimizar a emissão de CO2 proveniente do processo de obtenção de ferro gusa em Altos Fornos a coque, reduzindo seu impacto ambiental. Foram realizados testes em escala piloto com até 20% de moinha de carvão vegetal. Os resultados das análises realizadas no coque mostraram a viabilidade técnica e comercial para utilização em até 2% na carga.

The gold industry has been revolutionized in the last decade by market forces and technological changes. The latter are discussed in this paper, with particular emphasis on carbon-in-pulp (CIP) and heap leaching. The nature and scope of the process development aspects of a gold project are considered, and factors which determine process decisions are outlined, including the choice of CIP versus carbon-in-leach (CIL), agitated leaching versus heap leaching and treatment of ores containing copper and silver. Likely directions for development of gold processing in general are discussed, and metallurgical process options for treatment of ores of platinum group metals (PGM) are outlined.Metallurgical process development for gold and platinum group metals proceeds through a number of well defined stages, with input from various disciplines and information sources. The orientation phase will include preparation of a general project overview; careful consideration of the issue of sampling and sample preparation; characterisation of the resource in terms of ore types, mineralogy, chemical composition; development of appropriate methodology; and development of an understanding of the potential metallurgical unit operations.The process definition phase will be-'directed to development and definition of a notional process flowsheet, and will include identification and appraisal of process options; development of, notional process flowsheets; testing of flowsheets against ore types; ranking of flowsheets; initial engineering, including preliminary mass balances, equipment selection and plant layout; and broad-brush economic appraisal.

The underground hard rock mining industry has had little change since the mobile equipment era began in the 1970s. Equipment has become larger and faster but has not kept pace with the following challenges: ? Improvements in safe production, ? Increasing demand for metals, ? Environmental improvements, ? Decreasing grades, ? Increasing depth of mining, ? More metal from underground vs. surface mining, and ? Energy and green house gas awareness. We are on the cusp of a new mining era and must rethink how underground hard rock mining must change in order to meet these challenges. This paper will show historical changes and propose a set of guiding principles for the next era of mining. Mining has changed over the last century. Initially mining was primarily an endeavor carried on by private companies with minor environmental controls and few social expectations other than employment. In the mid to later part of the century the mining industry was facing new challenges: deeper mines, the London Metals Exchange markets for pricing, and environmental concerns related to acidic rock drainage coming to the forefront. In today?s context, mining has evolved in complexity with the social and environmental aspects equally or surpassing the technical complexities such as expanding from mining hard rock to laterites, and mining lower grades or at greater depths. Nowadays, communities must be considered as partners, both locally and globally and the increased international visibility pushes the mining sector to take a more balanced approach to the business of mining (Fig. 1).

On July 15, 16, and 17, 1918, through the good offices of Secretary Stoughton, and the courtesy of War Department officials, Columbia Section was able to secure a series of moving pictures which were presented under the auspices of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association.. The title was "The Way Out," representing the activities of individuals who had lost an arm, a leg, or both, yet whose apparent misfortunes were made the stepping stones to advancement in various human activities. The exhibitions were given at Natatorium Park in the evening, each of the three performances being attended by 1000 per-sons. Later the films were shipped to Kellogg, Idaho, where they were shown in the principal playhouse one evening to a full house. On July 31, 1918, the Columbia Section participated in the luncheon and other entertainment in honor of Alfred D. Flinn, Secretary of the Engineering Council, who made a trip through the country to meet different classes of engineers, members of the National Societies, for whom he had a message. The entertainment was under the auspices of the Spokane Engineering and Technical Association, Mr. Peter Mogensen presiding. The luncheon was held in the Elizabethan Room, Davenport Hotel, at noon, 35 engineers being present, of whom about one-third were our members.

ArcHodrilling (Arcuate Hole Drilling) of short radius overhead curved holes from within the working level with a new, small-diameter in-the-hole drill produces tangible, assayable chip samples from the entire height of the projected mine level where the hole arcs down immediately in front of the working face. Drilling through the projected level with diamond coring tools produces samples showing the competence of roof and floor strata as well as the geological and economic characteristics of the ore. Hand-portable solid state electronic surveying instrument has been developed to survey the ArcHole and a convenient nomograph plotting record sheet converts survey digital readouts to hole inclination in degrees, to radius of curvature in feet, and to attitude of the plane of curvature from vertical in degrees, all without calculation. The ArcHodrilling system offers a tool with which the exploration geologist can more nearly assess the true potential of old mining properties being reexamined and to reduce the number of surface diamond drill holes needed to secure development data about new ore bodies. It gives the mine geologist an opportunity to secure those data at a fraction of the cost of drilling from the surface. The mining supervisor has a convenient, cheap tool to look ahead to know what he will be mining tomorrow. The mill supervisor has an opportunity to reduce his mineral loss in tailings by being able to anticipate the grade of his mill feed.
