To those who have had the happy privilege of friendship with George W. Goetz, the announcement of his death has brought great sadness. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, February 17, 1855, and died January 15, 1897. In his boyhood days, when I first came to know him, his frank, trustful manner; his eyes brimming with truthfulness; his eagerness, never obtrusive, to gain knowledge from all whom he met; and his equal readiness to give without ostentation of his store, constituted a personality which at once commanded confidence and won friendship. I am told that as a scholar of five years he was conspicuous for brightness, a show-pupil, who was called on to recite when visitors were present at school. Yet this in no way spoiled him. His modesty was too strong a trait in his character to be overcome by any attention which might, be expected to arouse vanity. In his simple-heartedness he was pleased then, as he always was in his maturer years, to give of his knowledge for the gratification of his listeners, with never a thought of himself. So strong was this characteristic that in a brief autobiography, in the form of a letter to his wife and children, found among his papers, he excuses himself to them for recounting what he had accomplished in his life-work. As a preface to this autobiography (which, it seems, was prepared on the eve of a sudden journey to California, taken February, 1895, for his health) he says: " I am writing this rather hastily, and I

A região de queima é a etapa decisiva neste equipamento para garantir a qualidade da pelota e também representa a maior parte da energia inserida no processo. No presente trabalho foi realizada a otimização do processo de queima, suportado pela metodologia Lean Six Sigma, avaliando a composição química da pelota, os ajustes de adição de combustível sólido na pelota e temperatura do perfil térmico de queima. Dessa forma, foram realizados ensaios em escala piloto para diferentes perfis de temperatura da etapa de queima. Não obstante, foram avaliadas as propriedades químicas, físicas, metalúrgicas e ainda foi realizada a avaliação microestrutural das pelotas. A validação dos estudos em escala laboratorial foi realizada através de testes industriais a fim de assegurar a qualidade do produto, a produtividade do forno e redução de custos de produção.

As principais operações unitárias de um processo de pelotização são: moagem, filtragem, aglomeração e queima. Das etapas citadas, a moagem, como início do processo, é uma etapa crucial para as demais operações. Foi baseado neste fato, que o presente estudo foi realizado, tendo como objetivo principal, avaliar o comportamento das misturas de minério de ferro com diferentes índices de moabilidade e definir os possíveis ajustes dos parâmetros de processo de moagem em função dos diferentes perfis mineralógicos. Foram usadas três misturas de diferentes níveis de índices de moabilidade: baixo, médio e alto, a fim de observar as respostas nas variáveis operacionais de possível atuação na rotina operacional. Para isso, uma matriz de experimento foi realizada, com oito testes para cada mistura de minério de ferro, variando os parâmetros de moagem de mínimo a máximo. As variáveis respostas foram às características físicas das misturas, superfície específica e granulometria, onde foram medidas no sistema automatizado PSI. Através dos resultados dos testes, foram calculados modelos matemáticos de superfície específica e granulometria das misturas em função dos parâmetros operacionais. Os modelos mostraram satisfatórios e aplicáveis, apresentando correlação entre as variáveis dependentes e independentes.

Introduction PETROLEUM seepages are known in Alaska at four localities, all on Pacific seaboard. These, named from east to west, are Yakataga, Katalla on Controller Bay, Iniskin Bay on Cook Inlet, and Cold Bay on the Alaska Peninsula. Besides these, a petroleum residue has been found near Smith Bay on the north Arctic coast of the Territory. At Katalla, Cold Bay, and Iniskin Bay there has been some drilling for oil, and in the first field several productive wells have been opened up. Alaskan petroleum so far as its composition is known, is a refining oil, with paraffin base and low sulphur content. Most of what is known of the geology of Alaska oil fields is based on the investigations of Dr. George C. Martin, of the United States Geological Survey. A. G. Maddren, of the same service, has recently made a reconnaissance of the Yakataga oil field. The data to be here presented are chiefly taken from the following publications: G. C. In a reserve assessment in areas where multiple coal seams lie above drainage or outcrop and where mining options include contour, auger, mountaintop removal and underground methods, the mining technique (or techniques) selected are heavily dependent on both economic and technologic factors. Rapid and accurate calculations utilizing digital terrain modeling, structure isopacs and including factors such as minimum seam heights, reject limits and coal quality are of vital importance in mine planning. The ability to forecast mine development in a "what if" fashion is a powerful tool that now demands computer resources to reduce these time-consuming, often repetitive calculations. Island Creek Coal and Occidental Systems have developed a minicomputer based engineering workstation for local digitizing, plotting, and volumetric calculations to move the computing function from the computer room (with time sharing on a mainframe computer) into a more interactive environment, resulting in a gain in efficiency and productivity for the mine planning process. The workstation is connected to Occidental's mainframe computers allowing data transfer to the host for "CPU-intensive" calculations. This paper reviews the system configuration and describes the operations required for a typical mine planning application.

The Pitch mine of Pinnacle Exploration, Inc. is in the Marshall Pass district, thirty miles east of Gunnison, Colorado. This is a new mining district, having come into existence as recently as 1955, when uranium mineralization was discovered rather late in the days of the uranium boom. There have been three other mines in the district, all of them now inactive. Two of these produced a few hundred tons of very high-grade uranium ore, and the third, Pinnacle's Little Indian 36 mine, produced a few thou- sand tons of lower grade ore. Pinnacle was one of the first companies in the district, and was able to acquire a large acreage. The first two years of exploration were essentially wasted in looking for Plateau-type deposits in a mineralized sandstone bed, but this "wasted" work produced two specific items that paid off. One was an ore-grade outcrop that ultimately became the Little Indian 36 mine, and the other was a boulder of very high-grade uranium ore that eventually led to the discovery of the Pitch mine; however, the actual source of the boulder still has not been found.

Delays in the completion of the alterations to the plant at the works of Messrs. Oliver Bros. and Phillips, in Pittsburgh, coupled with the increased demand for metal made from regular Bessemer pig, placing the firm many hundreds of tons behind in their deliveries, prevented Mr. Henry W. Oliver, Jr., from redeeming his promise to place his works at my disposal for further tests of high-phosphorus irons, until May 5th. Upon that date, I assumed charge of the operations in his steel-plant. Mr. Oliver had purchased Neshannock pig as a basis for a supply of phosphorus. My information is to the effect that this iron is made from low-grade Lake Superior ores and mill-cinder, the latter "ore" being utilized to about 40 per cent. of the total mixture. At all events the pig had quite as much phosphorus, and in as varying quantities, as the most exacting could desire. My experiments of last fall had well satisfied me as to the effect of from 0.35 to 0.55 per cent. of phosphorus in the Clapp Griffiths metal. Hence at this time my first trials were directed to

Mt. Whaleback, the property of the Mt. Newman Joint Venturers, contains more than one thousand million long tons of high grade hema- tite averaging 64% Fe, ranging from 70%, the grade of absolutely pure hematite, to 54%. The ore occurs in the Dales Gorge and Joffre Members of the Brockman Iron Formation. The interbedded shale bands common in other orebodies occurring in these horizons are seldom more than a few inches thick and are commonly partially enriched to about-35% Fe. In the generally hard, massive hematite orebody, the gangue minerals tend to break preferentially to the fines, or -6 mm product, and for this reason it is of a somewhat lower grade than the lumpy product. The control of the chemical qualities is concentrated on the fines product for it has been found that maintaining the iron and alumina levels in this product ensures that all chemical specifications are met in both the lump and fines products. Physical qualities are monitored to ensure that the physical quali- ties of decrepitation and degradation of the lumpy product are maintained at levels accept able to the buyers.

IN the formation of martensite in steel, it has been observed that the habit plane does not change continuously as the alloy content is varied. Instead, it appears that discrete habits correspond to certain ranges of composition. Greninger and Troiano' found that in low-, medium-, and high-carbon steels, the habits are approximately (1l1), (225), and (259), respectively.* The work of Mehl and Van Winkle2 indicated that the change from the (225) to the (259) habit is fundamentally a consequence of the lower transformation temperature rather than the higher carbon content. Also, Otte and Read3 observed that the habit plane orientation for a chrome-carbon steel scattered within a cone of semivertex angle of 5 deg, which was outside of the experimental error in the determination of the habit plane. These observations suggest the importance of investigating what factors in the crystallography of the formation of martensite account for the several types of habit and the inherent scatter in the precise orientation of the habit plane. The US Bureau of Mines is conducting core leaching experiments with sulfuric acid on oxide copper ores from the Cyprus Casa Grande and Asarco/Freeport Santa Cruz deposit in Arizona to further the understanding of the leaching process in supergene copper ores as it relates to in situ mining. Leach solutions from atacamite mineralization contained 5 to 30 g/L (0.05 to 0.28 oz/gal) copper and few extraneous ions. Leachant from chrysocolla ores, with grades similar to the atacamite, contained 2 to 9 g/L (0.02 to 0.08 oz/ gal) copper and abundant extraneous ions. Quartz and K-feldspar had no impact on leach solution composition at any acid concentration up to 40 g/L - (0.39 oz/gal) while illite and sericite had minimal impact. Biotite, calcium-rich clay, and limonite have a significant impact on solution chemistry when there is abundant free acid in solution. High acid concentra¬tions increase acid consumption in ores with abundant biotite and limonite gangue. High acid concentrations can be used in ores with quartz, K feldspar, and sericite gangues without increasing acid consumption per unit of copper removed.

The Ebliden Company, originally entering the field of mining with the workings of the gold-copper-arsenic deposit at Ebliden, commenced zinc benificiation at Kristineberg in 1940 and lead mining at Laisvall in 1943. During the three last decades a number of mines has been developed for production, Today the Mining Division of BOLIDEN produces ore from 22 mines, operates 7 ore dressing plants and produces: [ ] Over two thirds of the lead contents are treated in the lead smelter of the company at Ri6nnskarsverken. The other part of it is sold abroad. The zinc content of the lead concentrates is recovered from the lead smelter at Ri6nnskarsverken. The zinc concentrates are shipped abroad to European smelters in Norway and Germany. Today BOLIDEN has its plants in the northern and the middle parts of Sweden. Figure 1. Straight lead ore, lead-zinc ores, lead-zinc-copper bearing ores and complex lead-zinc-copper and pyrite ores are treated in local and central plants with a capacity of 8.600 tpd. BOLIDEN also operates the low grade copper ore at Aitik at 7.000 tpd.

This paper takes a personal look, through the author?s own experiences, at the implementation of innovations in the narrow-seam, hard-rock mining environment of South Africa?s mining industry over the past 40 years. A number of examples are used to illustrate some of the successes and failures over this period. More importantly, the examples are used to illustrate that the bulk of the investment for these projects should have been applied in a manner that could have achieved more sustainable results. The use of the word ?technology? in this context is also examined, as it is the author?s contention that only measuring the performance of machinery fails to encapsulate the potential of the entire system describing the scope of the innovation being implemented. These experiences and observations are projected onto the current backdrop of upheaval in the relationship between key industry stakeholders and the sustainability challenges facing areas of the mining sector in the South African economy. The paper concludes with some opinions on where attention can be focused in order to develop new thinking that can be applied for the safe and economic extraction of the nation?s mineral wealth.

In April 1982, the contracting Companies, ABV of Sweden and Hoyer-Ellefsen of Norway forming the Consorcio Escandinavo Agoyan, signed the contract for the construction of the civil works of the Agoyan Hydroelectric Project, located in Ecuador, South America. The project is located in the Andes mountain region of Ecuador - one of the smaller countries in this part of the world, located on the Pacific Coast. The contract was signed with the Instituto Ecuatoriano de Electrificación (INECEL), a public institution in charge of the development of all major energy producing projects in Ecuador, for a value of approximately US$ 120,000,000. The contract's main elements are - Concrete gravity dam with a total volume of approximately 210,000 cu m. (60 m wide x 45 m maximum height, 320 m crest). - 2,400 m of headrace tunnel, interior diameter of finished lining 6 m of which 450 m is in-situ tunnel formed in a trench. - Pressure shafts, 132 m long, the lowest meters with sheet lining, the rest with concrete lining. - Powerhouse cavern with an excavated volume of approximately 25,000 c m in which two turbines of 78 MW each will be installed. - Two 140 m tailrace tunnels with a finished diameter (concrete

In many practical situations, the samples available to estimate a block of ore are not located on a regular grid. The sample sizes and orientations are not constant, and the number and relative position of the samples used for valuation of each block change from block to block. Estimation of a block W might be very complex and time consuming if each sample in the neighbourhood of the block were considered individually. A practical solution consists of grouping the samples in blocks Wi (i = 1, 2, . . . n) in the neighbourhood of W, and estimating µw as a weighted average of the mean xi of the samples in Wi. Possible ways of grouping the samples are illustrated in Fig. 1 1.1. More complex patterns can be found in the literature (Krige, 1966) To calculate the kriging estimator of pw, we must be able to calculate the variance of xi, the covariance of xi and xj, and the covariance of xi and pµw. The purpose of this chapter is to show how these quantities can be calculated when we ignore the position of the samples in the block Wi. We consider the samples to be randomly distributed in Wi; kriging with this assumption is known as random kriging.

Overview Coal production in the first half of 1982 remained near the high levels begun in mid-1981. Production then fell sharply during the latter part of the year due to recession-weakened demand. Even so, 1982 coal production was estimated at 756 Mt (833.4 million st), a record high that exceeded 1980's previous production record of 752.7 Mt (829.7 million st). Though 1982 coal production was substantially below industry expectations, the attained production represented a modest achievement in view of the recession's severity. In 1982, the gross national product declined 1.8%, its worst performance in 36 years. The recession, along with mild weather, improved energy efficiency, and conservation efforts caused the nation's energy use to drop 4.1%. With the iron and steel, construction, and auto industries experiencing production declines, industrial energy use fell 10.8%. The extent to which the nation's economic slump affected coal markets in 1982 varied: • total domestic coal use declined 3.4%; • exports remained strong for most of the year; • electric utility coal use declined for the first time in 25 years; • coal use at coke plants declined by one-third; and • coal use in other industrial sectors stayed surprisingly near the 1981 level. Coal Use Domestic coal use totaled 641.8 Mt (707.5 million st) in 1982,22 .9 Mt (25.2 million st) below the 1981 level. Nearly all the decline occurred at coke plants where use dropped to 37.1 Mt (40.9 million st) in 1982 from 55.3 Mt (61 million st) in 1981. The decline in all other industrial and electric utility coal markets was only 5.3 Mt (5.8 million st). Residential and commercial coal use increased 635 kt (700,000 st) to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) from 6.7 Mt (7.4 million st). Power generation decreased 2.3% in 1982, the first year since 1945 that output failed to increase. The decline was due to a drop in industrial demand. Electricity sales to residential, commercial, and other nonindustrial users increased slightly. But coal's competitive position stayed strong. Power generation from oil and natural gas fell 28.9% and 11.7%, respectively. Power generation from coal declined only 0.9%. Among the primary energy sources, coal fueled 53.2% of US electric power generated in 1982, compared with 52.4% in 1981. In 1982, US steel production declined to 66.1 Mt (72.9 million st), the lowest level in 50 years and down from 109.6 Mt (120.8 million st) in 1981. The reduced steel demand forced 13 coke plants to shut down. Coal Exports Coal exports in 1982 totaled 96.4 Mt (106.3 million st), 5.7 Mt (6.3 million st) less than in 1981. Despite the worldwide recession and above normal coal stockpiles in many countries, exports were higher than many expected. This showed the relatively strong US position in international coal trade. The US continued to export near-record coal tonnages despite increasingly competitive influences. These included an improvement in Australia's labor difficulties, the return of Polish coal to Western European markets, and lower oil prices. In 1982, US port facilities were improved and expanded, and more efficient methods for scheduling foreign vessels were implemented. As a result, high volume coal shipments to US ports were routinely loaded and dispatched unhampered by bottlenecks that plagued East Coast ports in 1981.
