Size assessment of fragmentation is all about estimating the population of fragment sizes in the rock pile. A knowledge of the size distribution of particles can be used in applications from evaluating the stability of a waste dump, to optimizing a blast design to achieve a required fragmentation, to on-line control of a crushing and sieving operation.

Major Francis Hamilton Buchanan coined the term `laterite' (Latin; brick-rock) in 1807 for the red earths used for building blocks in southern India. Although these earths were actually weathered basalts, the term is now applied to weathering profiles developed upon a wide range of bedrocks. This report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds in Nicholas County, W. Va. It is one in a series describing coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Almost 5 million tons of coal were produced in Nicholas County, W. Va., in 1960, of which over 2.6 million tons were cleaned in eight preparation plants. It has been estimated that over 6 billion tons remained in the county as of December 31, 1960, in beds 12 inches and more thick.

Through the partiality of my fellow-members I have been able, during seven years' service on the Council of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, to note the development of technical societies, a subject which commends itself as an appropriate theme for me, in retiring from the office of President, at a time when we meet in convention with Canadian technical societies. Our next assembly, called at Chicago at the time fixed for an International Engineering Congress, offers additional reason for the selection of this topic. If subsequent statements appear to give to the American Institute of Mining Engineers greater prominence than to kindred organizations, they may be excused upon the ground of long association with and loyalty to its members, and to a personal knowledge of their work. Besides, data as to its growth and development are more accessible; and at a meeting of the Institute features connected with it may be considered as of greater immediate interest than those affecting other organizations. The purpose of this address is, however, to use the record of the Institute as indicating a similar development of other technical societies, rather than to claim preeminence for any organization; the work of each must speak for it. There is a general tendency to form associations at the present time. Organizations have been created and are active in every profession and in all branches of labor, trade, industry, commerce, manufactures, science and art. A record of such associations and their aggregate membership would be startling, and would show how large a percentage of the population of North America is connected with one or more of them; but the figures cannot be even approximately estimated. The class of associations representing national, state, or local trade interests, such as boards of trade, chambers of commerce, etc., may be used as an illustration. A late report shows that in the

Acid rock drainage is one of the most complex issues facing regulators and mining companies for management and remediation of mining wastes. All mining waste units, including open pits, underground workings, tailings, waste rock and leached spent ore have the potential to generate acidic leachate based on the acid generation or neutralization potential of the material. This paper uses a case study of the Walker Mine in northern California to give an overview of the available control and mitigation methods. Wetland design is emphasized as a low-cost alternative treatment option for wastewater remediation. The Walker Mine is located on the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada, 20 miles north of Portola in Plumas County, California. The Walker Mine was an active copper mine between 1915 and 1941. During active mining, tailings were discharged into an area 1 mile west of the site at the confluence of Dolly Creek and Grizzly Creek. In addition, there were two main sources of metal-rich, acid waters impacting Dolly Creek: discharge from the mine tunnel portal, and seepage and surface runoff from waters contacting mine waste downslope from the portal area. A mine portal seal was installed in 1987 which prevented the majority of mine water drainage from further contaminating the area. Minor drainage from the portal and seeps discharge into a holding pond which overflows into Dolly Creek when elevation exceeds 6,200 feet. A site characterization study was performed to evaluate the potential water quality threat to Dolly Creek from mine tunnel discharge and waste rock seeps. Based on the results of this study several remedial options were investigated, both on a design and cost basis, to determine which abatement alternatives could be realistically implemented. The remedial options considered include both in situ containment (landfill, waste pile) or removal (backfilling into underground workings and/or sinkholes) of solid wastes. Waste water remedial options include long-term, seasonal treatment of the portal mine water, or long-term, passive treatment of portal discharge and waste pile leachate.

THE CHALRYAN.--I think that we have set the stage for the balance of the sym- posium. Most of the emphasis has been placed on the immediate value of every- thing we can do and everything we can learn for the furtherance of the war effort. I believe that ought to be first, but I also believe that this is the time for us to con- sider very seriously not only what these improved methods and techniques do to form a closer approach to ideal segregation but what effect these great quantities of scrap metals and alloys that are going to be produced this year and next, are going to have-what their impact will be-on post- war industry in general and in particular ,, on the primary metals fields. In some cases we have been hearing in the last month or two of the law of diminishing returns coming to the fore. We find alloy simplification growing and certain alloys being produced in great quantities, which will perhaps drop out of the picture some- what as the war ends but never to the lower ( stage they had before. We have I think a pretty good cross- section of the producers, the refiners, the reclaimers and ingot makers, the ultimate users here, and there ought to be some good and helpful discussion. ASBESTOS is a general term embracing the fibrous varieties of a number of minerals. Of these, the hydrous magnesium silicate, chrysotile (H4Mg3Si209), a variety of serpentine, is the most abundant and useful to industry. All other types of asbestos belong to the amphibole group of minerals and are classified as: crocidolite, NaFe(SiO3), FeSiO3; anthophyllite, (MgFe)SiO3; amosite, also a ferromagnesium silicate but with iron content higher than that of anthophyllite; tremolite, CaMg3(SiO3)4; and, actinolite, Ca (MgFe)3(SiO3)4. PROPERTIES The commercial value of asbestos depends largely on the physical property that permits it to be readily separated into fine filaments of high tensile strength and flexibility, which, coupled with the fact that it has the quality of incombustibility of a mineral-in distinction to vegetable and animal fibers-makes it of unique usefulness for many purposes. To some extent, the value depends upon the length of the fiber, although extreme length is neither necessary nor desirable for most purposes. Chrysotile occurs as cross-fiber veins, in which the asbestos fibers are approximately' at right angles to the vein walls, with vein width- or fiber length-seldom exceeding 2 or 3 in.; also as slip-fiber, in which the fibers 'lie in the same plane as the vein or on slippage planes. A cleanly broken vein of cross-fiber has a pearly luster and may range from a deep green or brown color to light shades of yellowish green or cream. When of good quality, the fiber filaments forming the vein may be easily drawn away from their neighbors and exhibit a fine silkiness and pure white color. They may be twisted into a thread and when flexed between thumb and fingers are found to be strong and pliable. The Wisconsin Zinc District, or the Upper Mississippi Lead and Zinc District as it is often called, lies in the southwestern corner of Wisconsin, in Grant, Iowa and Lafayette Counties, and it includes adjoining parts of Illinois and Iowa. The district is about 70 miles long, north and south, and about 40 miles wide, east and west. It lies wholly within what is geologically known as the non-glaciated area of the Upper Mississippi Valley. HISTORY OF THE DISTRICT The district was first opened up as a lead producer in 1822. From this time until 1860, about 205,000 tons of cog lead (galena) and washed lead (galena) was produced from shallow crevices and openings. From 1860 to 1900, about 74,500 tons was produced, and since that time, from 5000 to 7000 tons has been produced annually. Since 1900, most of the lead concentrate produced has been as a byproduct of the zinc mines. The first zinc ores were mined about 1862. These were the carbonate ores, locally known as "drybone." Very little zinc blende was mined in the district, previous to 1875. The zinc blende ores mined from 1875 to 1900 were mostly of the high-grade, hand-cobbed, sheet-ore class, which usually contained from 45 to 60 per cent. metallic zinc Such mines as the "Sallie Waters," "Quinlin," 'Lead Mine," "Benton Blende," and "Ida Blende," located near Benton, Wis., were mines which produced ores of this type, during this period. The mines located at Highland, the "Coker Mine" located at Livingston, Wis., and the "Opencut Mine" located at Shullsburg, Wis., were mines that were heavy zinc carbonate producers, previous to 1900. The production of zinc ores in the district from 1862 to 1890 was about 283,500 tons, mostly zinc carbonate, with a probable average metallic zinc content of 30 per cent. The application of a horizontal inclinometer and a tiltmeter to measure tilt, curvature, and deformations of shallow footings during mine subsidence is described. The measurements were taken during mining of a longwall panel in Southern Illinois and were supplemented with precision level survey data. Monitoring was conducted under a cooperative agreement between the Institute for Geotechnology at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the National Science Foundation, the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund, and Old Ben Coal Company. Six different footings were constructed and instrumented at two sites; one above the panel centerline, and the second inside the edge of the panel in the anticipated zone of maximum tension. A brief description of the inclinometer casing and tiltplate installation is described, and the results obtained from the two instruments on a plain concrete footing compared. Observations of footing deformations and curvatures calculated from the inclinometer and tiltmeter data are also presented, and the results compared with observed structural damage.

NA's primary smelter has continually increased its production output in the past decade, making it necessary to improve the lifetime of the casting moulds for copper anodes. The current throughput of more than 1,100,000 tonnes per year of copper concentrates amounts to an output of about 450,000 tonnes per year of anode copper at NA's Hamburg plant. The anodes are cast on a single casting wheel with 24 anode moulds. Besides the stable chemical analyses, the reproducible geometry of the anodes is an important precondition for the success of the subsequent electro-refining process. The anode moulds are subjected to thermally-induced alternating stress and side reactions with the melt. Typical signs of wear will be shown and discussed. Different processes to produce anode moulds will be introduced and the results in terms of their lifetime and the quality of the anodes themselves will be discussed. Finally an outlook is given on possible efficiency improvements.

Fragmentation modelling in soft rocks presents a challenge due to their propensity to further fragment after blasting during normal handling. Coal and some iron ore deposits are examples of materials that undergo significant degradation during the extraction, hauling and dumping process of the mining operation. The Kuz-Ram model is an empirically derived predictor of size distribution from blasting hard rock. Little breakage occurs during excavation and subsequent sizing of hard rock, so the measured Run of Mine (ROM) size distribution is essentially the same as the post-blast (before excavation) size distribution. However, for soft rocks, each step of the excavation and hauling operation imparts energy to the rock particles so the measured. ROM size distribution will be significantly different from the postblast size distribution. In order to calculate the ROM fragmentation at any stage of the extraction (or sizing) operation, the JKMRC has developed a model that combines both blast fragmentation and degradation through subsequent handling.
