"The national reactive tailings (RATS) program is a co-operative industry-government effort to develop practical techniques for closure of reactive tailings areas. This paper summarizes the RATS program objectives and areas of research, and details the Noranda/CANMET project on the Waite Amulet tailings.Geophysical and biohydrogeochemical investigations were carried out at an inactive copper-zinc mine tailings site, Waite Amulet, in Noranda, Quebec. Geophysical investigations consisted of seismic, electromagnetic conductivity and electrical resistivity surveys to determine the thickness of the layers above bedrock and to map conductivity variations within the tailings and the immediate outlying area. Biohydrogeochemical investigations consisted of installing multilevel piezometer nests to determine groundwater flow patterns and porewater chemistry, obtaining solid core samples and characterizing for physical, chemical and mineralogical parameters, and iron oxidizing and sulphate reducing bacterial counts.The geophysical survey indicated a bedrock ridge extending under the tailings from the northeastern outcrop which may act as a porewater boundary layer. The survey also indicated a 2 to 20 m clay layer underlying the main tailings dam. Preliminary results of the saturated zone porewater chemistry have indicated three major zones of high electrical conductivity varying between 1,000 to 12,000 µs and pH between 3.4 to 8. Lower pH and high metal and sulphate concentrations were obtained in a shallow zone near the water table. With depth, the concentration of metal and sulphate ions decreased and pH increased below the water table. The underlying clay layer is relatively impervious -and most of the seepage from the tailings is probably exiting from the sides of the impoundment dam."

Mine blasting is directly associated with ground vibration. If these affect critical structures (buildings pit walls, etc.) they must be mitigated to reduce the environment and social impacts. Vibration monitoring and control is one of the most important procedures in blasting because it will impact short and long term incidents associated with this blast effect. Technology moves ever forward, and today we have personal devices that are equipped with an array of sensors, for that reason the authors decided to investigate the possibility of using a personal device to do vibration control. This case study compares the same blast measured with a traditional seismograph and a smartphone. To validate this new methodology, attenuation laws were built with data from a traditional seismograph and a smartphone application. Predictions were also made prior to a set of blasts. Residual analysis was used for data validation from the two different sources. From the performed analysis, to prove the validity of this new methodology, the normality tests for statistics residues analysis proves that it is possible to infer that the model has a null residual mean and a small residual error. The achieved results show the accuracy of these devices, the authors pretend to show the potential of this equipment and open a completely new door for vibration analysis.

Recent advances in the development and application of the DuPont Activator Technology are discussed. Activators are catalysts of gold dissolution in cyanide solution. Plant testing of this technology in the vat leach circuit of the Homestake mine in Lead, South Dakota, showed increased gold recoveries ofup to 5%. Homestake has licensed the technology for this application and is in the process of full commercialization. Results from testing additional ores on a laboratory scale are also presented. These results indicate this technology will also increase leaching at much lower cyanide concentrations while achieving the same gold recovery.

In the death of Professor Hofman, the world has lost a great metallurgist and a great author of metallurgical literature. Measured in time, his life was not quite seventy-two years, but measured in work accomplished it was much longer than this. He was born Aug. 13, 1852 and died Apr. 28, 1924. The region about the south shore of Lake Superior is to geologists one of the most interesting districts of the United States, embracing as it does, in a limited area, old crystalline rocks, together with forms that are almost in their original condition of a beach sand and mud. In this region was first established the base of the geological column, the Azoic (" without life") System of Foster and Whitney, or the Archæan (" the beginning ") of Dana. Overlying this system are found the sandstones and limestones of the Paleozoic (" ancient life "), and their associated lava-flows (Algonkian ?). These systems possess a strong economic interest, owing to the stores of iron in the Azoic and of copper in the Paleozoic or Eozoic of this district, which forms one of the most important mining regions in America. The geology of this section is so difficult and complicated that, in its general discussion, perhaps no proposition can be stated concerning any portion of it to which exceptions cannot be taken. Indeed, out of the general discussion of different points comes in time the truth, and various geologists, even now, are working over this region in the endeavor to arrive at some consensus, or at least to determine upon what points they can agree, and upon what points difference of opinion will have to exist between them at present, until further evidence can be obtained. The writer will endeavor to give in a brief form that which appears to him at present to be the most correct statement of the geological structure of the region, admitting that from time to time, as more complete evidence shall be obtained, he expects to change his views in the future, as he has done in the past, if that evidence shall cause him to believe that he has been mistaken.

A new linear charge method has been applied in coyote blasting for highway excavation in which presplitting boreholes are set along the designed rock slope with some empty chambers at the end of linear charges whose axes are perpendicular to the axis of the highway. Three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis for this method has been conducted using LS-DYNA3D. The results indicate that the blasting damage to the rock slope is reduced greatly using the new linear charge method in coyote blasting.

The cyanidation and adsorption processes at Fazenda Brasileiro mine were studied with the aim of increasing hydrometallurgical recovery. Technical evaluation of the processes consisted of (i) quantitative mineralogy of ore samples collected in different points of the circuit, and (ii) comparison of plant performance in the original (designed CIP) and in the modified (current CIP/CIL) circuits. An empirical correlation between process variables and gold grades in the cyanidation tailings was established. The suggested modifications in the circuit and in the operation conditions led to an increase in gold recovery, from 91 to 93.5%. Annual revenue is expected to show an increase of approximately US$ 1 million.

Pressure oxidation of gold containing concentrates and ores is an effective pretreatment for liberating refractory gold. This is particularly true when an appreciable portion of the gold is associated with sulfides and is not amenable to conventional cyanidation. A brief review of the literature on pressure oxidation of refractory gold materials is presented. The chemistry of the aqueous oxidation of arsenopyrite and pyrite is discussed. Data obtained on pressure oxidation and subsequent cyanidation of concentrates and ores tested at the Sherritt Research Centre are also presented.

In the period 1970-1995, a number of hydro metallurgical processes to treat copper concentrates to overcome the pollution problem due to S02 emission in smelters were developed. Pilot and commercial scale plants were built and operated for some time, but eventually all were abandoned a few years later. It is constructive to examine why these processes were abandoned after so much expenditure of funds and effort, so that errors should not be repeated in the future and lessons from the past are learned.

The amount of hydrophobic materials constituting the mineral froth strongly influences the froth viscosity. Higher truth viscosity, on the other hand, can retard the drainage of physically carried over, hydrophobic particles. In phosphate flotation tests, a direct correlation was observed between froth viscosity and recovery, and an inverse correlation existed between froth viscosity and grade. Phosphate flotation tests in the presence of a silica depressant indicated that higher froth viscosity is an effect rather than a cause for the presence of silica particles in the froth.

This paper presents a comparison study done at VTT's new pilot plant facilities in Outokumpu, Finland, for chromite ore. The ore was ground in a rod mill -, a ball mill - and high pressure roller mill - ball mill circuit in the capacity range of 0.5 - 3.0 t / h. The main grinding characteristics are discussed and the quality of the products are compared from the mineralogical point of view. The benefits of high pressure roller mill comminution for further mineral processing of chromite is also discussed.

This paper reviews the impact of the idler set on the performance of belt conveyors. Idler rolls as part of the load support system and their interaction with the conveyor system will be discussed. in particular, the rotating performance of the individual idler roll concentrating on the rotating resistance and life of the bearing and seal design are addressed in detail. A basis for the development of performance specifications for use in conveyor design that takes advantage of the idler manufacturers design and manufacturing expertise is discussed.
