The Puget Sound Section met at the Arctic Club, Seattle, Wash., on Jan. 20, 1917. Sixteen members and five guests were present. Dinner having been served, the meeting was called to order. A letter from secretary of Associated Engineering Societies was read, requesting payment of this section's assessment to the quarterly budget, and upon motion it was voted that the Secretary-Treasurer be instructed to pay this assessment. It was moved and carried that this section join with the Chemical Society in a meeting. At the, close of the business meeting, Mr. Asa C. Baldwin gave an illustrated lecture on the "Alaska Boundary Survey." On Feb. 24, the Puget Sound Section again held a meeting at the Arctic Club, 16 members and three guests being present. Chester F. Lee, as member of a committee representing this section in the joint council of the Associated Engineering Societies, reported that by lots it had been decided that the term of service of said committee would be as follows: Chester F. Lee, two years; George. Watkin Evans, one year. Following adjournment of the business meeting, Prof. Joseph Daniels, of the University of Washington, delivered a very interesting lecture on "Milling Practice of The Alaska-Castineau Mining Company." THE detonation of a high-explosive charge having a metal-lined conical cavity (shaped charge) results in a fast-moving jet and a slow-moving slug.1-4 Clark and Bruckner reported the metallographic studies of a cast-iron slug. The present note describes the metallographic studies of a copper slug and discusses the principle of flow involved. The shaped charge consisted of a 5-cm diam cylinder of cast high explosive (60-40 RDX-TNT mixture) having a 45 deg and 0.16-cm thick copper cone. The copper (99.5 pct purity) had a grain size of 0.06 to 0.08 mm diam and a hardness of 65 to 75 Hv. These were fired into a deep container of water and the slugs were recovered undamaged. The longitudinal and transverse sections of the slug were polished, etched, and examined for mi-crostructural changes. Macroexamination revealed a radial grain flow inwards towards the center and a downward component of flow towards the base of the slug. Fig. 1 shows schematically the micro-structural changes observed on the longitudinal section of the slug. The region D near the apex and also along the outer surface of the slug was characterized by the presence of heavily deformed and twinned grains. The Bureau of Mines investigated the flotation responses of two copper-nickel ore samples from the Duluth Complex with the objective of recovering bulk sulfide concentrates. One of the ores studied was taken from a test pit; the other was taken from a test shaft. The samples were quite similar except that the pit sample analyzed 0.35 pct Cu and 0.11 pct Ni and the shaft sample analyzed 0.69 pct Cu and 0.14 pct Ni. Flotation responses were studied in both laboratory and pilot plant tests. Pilot plant flotation responses were similar for both samples resulting in grades of 12.2 pct Cu and 2.5 pct Ni for the pit sample and 12.2 pct Cu and 2.1 pct Ni for the shaft sample. Weight recoveries were 2.5 pct for the pit sample and 5.2 pct for the shaft sample. Copper and nickel recoveries for the pit sample were 87 and 62 pct, respectively, and 92 and 73 pct for the shaft sample. Both concentrates contained small but significant values of cobalt and precious metals. Cobalt recoveries were low--less than 40 pct for both concentrates. Precious metals contents of the concentrates were 1.59 oz/ton for the pit sample and 0.99 oz/ton for the shaft sample. Silver was the predominant precious metal by weight, but platinum and palladium represented the highest values.

As the building has recently become bigger, higher, and freeform, a technology called BIM(Building Information Modeling), which is a key technology that integrates construction and IT(Information Technology), has been rapidly introduced and expanded. Because BIM technology offers various benefits, countries that introduced BIM early has been actively promoted. However, misperceptions of BIM are prevalent in countries such as South Korea that have adopted it relatively late, with lack of awareness of its fundamental purposes. Under these circumstances, transparent and quantitative performance assessment needs to be executed in order to eliminate the misperceptions, and to explain and revitalize the BIM introduction. These quantitative performance measure KPI (Key Performance Indicators) to be measured should be prioritized. As derive performance indicators in terms of the four types (financial, customer, internal processes, learning and growth), and performance management systems, Uses the BSC to seek a balance between short-term financial goals, values and the value of long-term goals. Uses the BSC(Balanced Scorecards) to derive performance indicators in terms of the four types (financial, customer, internal processes, learning and growth), and performance management systems, seeking a balance between the value of short-term financial objectives and the value of long-term objectives. Through this, the KPI (Key Performance Indicators) which is used for measuring the effect of the BIM will be generated and also the method that can determine whether the generated KPI figures are objectively inter-connected will be suggested as well.

We give the following brief notes on early works containing some reference to mineralogy, mining, or metallurgy, to indicate the literature available to Agricola and for historical notes bearing upon the subject. References to these works in the footnotes may be most easily consulted through the personal index. GREEK AUTHORS.-Only a very limited Greek literature upon subjects allied to mining or natural science survives. The whole of the material of technical interest could be , reproduced on less than twenty of these pages. Those of most importance are : Aristotle (384-322 B.c.), Theophrastus (371-288 B.c.), Diodorus Siculus (1st Century B.c.), Strabo (64 B.c.-25 A.D.), and Dioscorides (1st Century A.D.). Aristotle, apart from occasional mineralogical or metallurgical references in De Mirabilibus, is mostly of interest as the author of the Peripatetic theory of the elements and the relation of these to the origin of stones and metals. Agricola was, to a considerable measure, a follower of this school, and their views colour much of his writings. We, however, discuss elsewhere1 at what point he departed from them. Especially in De Ortu ct Causis does he quote largely from Aristotle's Meteorologica. Physica, and De Coelo on these subjects. There is a spurious work on stones attributed to Aristotle of some interest to mineralogists. It was probably the work of some Arab early in the Middle Ages.[ ]

The underground Sunrise Dam gold mine commenced in October 2003 to extract ore from a series of orebodies with various dips, widths, and ore grades over a strike length of 1.5 km. To successfully operate flat stopes it was identified that a means to extract ore left behind after blasting in stopes with dips ranging from 15 to 40 degrees was needed. Various options were available, which included a bulk water cannon, hand held high-pressure water jet, remote controlled small dozer, several mini excavators and finally a specialised remote controlled excavator from the demolition industry. Trials were commenced for the bulk water cannon option in 2006 that proved that the concept worked, however, the system was too cumbersome to set up for use in cycle with production. Hand washing down using mine (low pressure) water with a two-inch bullhose proved of limited value. The small, one metre high remote controlled dozer as used in South Africa was reviewed, but the steepness of most of the stopes precluded this machine. The hand held high-pressure water jet option is still being investigated; with safety factors still being addressed. Several mini excavators were trialled to clean out the flat stopes with generally poor results, the machines being either too large to fit in the drives and pull ore down or too small with too short reach to effectively and efficiently pull ore out of the stope. In early 2007 a Brokk 330 remote controlled excavator was trialled on site with the low profile of the machine and unique arm configuration proving an effective tool for pulling ore from the footwall of short, flat stopes. A Brokk 330 remote controlled excavator was purchased in late 2007 and is currently in operation.

In the last several decades, techniques of data collection have been rapidly evolving. Automated spectroscopic techniques in the chemical analysis of rocks for example have advanced to the point that we can analyze samples faster than we can grind them. Remote sensors of LANDSAT give us intensity measurements in four color bands of every acre of the U.S. every 19 days. Common depth point seismic instrumentation systems used at sea for surveying and networks of seismometers arrayed around the country for earthquake studies likewise are generating vast amounts of data. These along with many other earth science data generating systems have caused a veritable data explosion. How do we deal with these enormous amounts of geologic data presently being produced as well as those produced in the past, and to be produced in the future? There is an immediate need to acquire and utilize past and present basic data in order to address today's national earth science problems. Also data being collected and stored now must be compatible with future data in order for us to be able to undertake the wide spectrum of analysis that must be made in the future. This is a big order! In order to organize and to be able to analyze these data, the USGS has embarked on a wide ranging program of compatible data base construction and the development of computer technology, based on interactive computing, to facilitate resource assessments and analyses. These activities are analogous to two sides of a coin. One side deals with the logic, philosophy, and mechanics of information storage and retrieval; and the other side deals with the sensible application of computer technology to the treatment of data. Outline of the Process THE Mines Operating Co.'s plant at Park City, Utah, was designed to treat the low-grade fillings in the old stopes of the Ontario mine. These fillings carry 6 to 14 oz. of silver, 1 to 2 lb. copper, 0.01 to 0.015 oz. of gold, and a small percentage of lead and zinc. The treatment consists in mixing the crushed ore with coal dust and salt and then roasting in a new type of furnace y combustion of the contained fuel. The roasted ore is leached with an acid salt solution to dissolve the silver, gold, copper, and lead. At present these metals are precipitated together on scrap iron and the product sold to a refinery. The only new feature of importance in this scheme of treatment is the roasting process, which makes possible the chloridizing of ores without any loss of the valuable metals, and at a very low cost. History of the Development of the Process The roasting process had its beginning in connection with research work at the Utah State School of Mines. N. C. Christensen, Jr., who held one of the School of Mines' fellowships, was engaged in some experimental work on blast roasting. At the same time I was doing some work on the insoluble gold in Mercur base ores. Mr. Christensen roasted some of this base gold ore in his pot furnace, and found that when he mixed a sufficiently low percentage of fuel with the ore, it did not sinter but roasted to a leachable product. We considered this a new application of blast roasting, and proceeded to test out a large number of ores in several different types of small roasters which we constructed. This experimental work continued well into the summer of 1911.

Vanadium is concentrated in the fly ash which is produced as a solid waste from oil sands operations in northern Alberta. Although a process flowsheet using sodium chloride as a roasting reagent has been developed at the University of Alberta, recent studies examine the p otential o f p otassium o r c alcium s alts a s alternative reagents for roasting Suncor fly ash to recover vanadium. Suncor fly ash was roasted with CaO, Ca(OH)2, CaCO3, CaSO4.2H2O and KC1 at 750, 850 and 950°C. Water leach extractions for the calcium compounds were low (<45%); leaching with 100 g/L Na2CO3 gave maximum extractions of 56 to 69% at 950°C. Ash roasted with KCI behaved similarly to ash roasted with NaCl. These tests indicate that similar roasting conditions (25 to 30% KCI, 850°C, and 2 to 4h) could be used to achieve similar water leach extractions (75 to 85%). However, the lower solubility of KVO3 in solution, compared to NaVO3, would make the use of KCI instead of NaCl less attractive from a process and economic standpoint. Mineralogically, leucite (KAlSi3O8) was the predominant phase in ash roasted with KCl while, in crystalline samples of ash roasted with calcium compounds, anorthite (CaAl2Si2O8) and pseudobrookite (Fe2TiO5) were identified. Ash roasted below 950°C with the calcium compounds remained poorly crystalline.

Born in Coaldale, Pa., in 1895, within sight of the mine head-frames and cleaning plants dotting the Panther Creek Valley, his whole life has been intimately associated with the strip and underground mines of this valley. One of the world&apos;s largest mineral deposits exists in the confines of the Panther Creek Valley and mining has been in progress for 125 years. Despite this long period of mining activity, two thirds of the coal in the valley yet remains to be mined. The Lehigh Navigation Coal Co. is the operating company.

The incorporation of the later corrections, in the form of a Supplement, became a necessity. Some two million cubic yards of sandstone and orthoquartzite were blasted and excavated at Upper Stillwater Dam, located high in the Uinta Mountains in northern Utah. The material was processed to produce concrete aggregate for the construction of the largest roller compacted concrete (RCC) dam ever constructed, and one of just a few in existence. The dam cross-section is shown in Figure 1. The aggregate was sound rock produced from required dam foundation excavation and from a quarry located about 1/2 mile from the dam site. Representative compressive strengths of the sandstones and quartzites were in the range of 20,000 to 30,000 psi.

Substantial savings in terms of project time, cost, and financial viability can result through the expert involvement of independent financial advisors in the early stages of any mining project&apos;s preparation. This role is not confined to project financing, financial modelling, valuations and corporate finance advice, but may in the early stages be much more strategic in nature, covering a wide group of subject areas. A number of separate examples and case studies are outlined, which show the manner in which financial advisors can be effectively used. The benefits arising from involving an additional professional team with the project group must be offset against the separate and additional cost factors involved.

A Reichert cone concentrator was installed in an aggregate plant circuit to recover the extremely fine "flour gold" known to exist in the deposit. The gold content of the bank- run gravels averages about 0.1 g/t-about $1.29/t, based upon $12.86/g ($400 per oz) gold. The fineness of the gold averages between 950 and 960. The Reichert cone, in conjunction with a conventional shaking table, recovers in excess of 85% of the gold. A screen analysis of the gold particles shows 44.1 % is - 74pm (-200 mesh) in size. The plant operates with a two-man crew.
