There are certain ores that can be treated without upgrading (e.g., gold and uranium ores), and upgrading needs to be considered only for fairly low-grade ores of this type. If the grade is very low, treatment will not be economic even with upgrading, and there is therefore a limited range of ore grades for which upgrading is suitable.

The careful selection of plant species is of paramount importance to the success of any attempts to re- vegetate these sites. A CANVASS of the various institutions known or suspected to be giving courses dealing with petroleum and gas revealed the courses listed in the accompanying table, which includes a summary of the number of class hours, as a whole, of the courses listed. It will be observed that the situation is grati-fying. Courses are presented in different institutions in the main geographic sections of the country, so that students have no difficulty in obtaining education in this field. The committee believes that the courses that are offered in many institutions are so inadequate in amount as to make it unwise for students who have not had additional work to consider themselves trained in this field. We strongly urge the few schools now presenting the most adequate courses to develop these more fully, bringing their work up at least to 300 hours, and let other schools concentrate their energies in other fields.

Evaporite units of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin are known to host native sulfur. In British Columbia, a large number of oil and gas exploration drilling holes reported intersections with native sulfur. The most important ones include 6 meters (20 feet) and 27 meters (90 feet) of native sulfur among 23 occurrences in Devonian Muskeg evaporite or adjacent Slave Point reef facies carbonates. A small Frasch sulfur deposit is known from Devonian Wabamun Group sediments near Camrose in South Central Alberta. Occurrences of native sulfur are common also in association with presently mined gypsum of Devonian Burnais Formation in southeastern British Columbia. Triassic sediments with evaporite members in British Columbia are also known to contain native sulfur showings. A widespread presence of anhydrite in many sedimentary units of Alberta and British Columbia together with oil and gas fields in the same areas and associated native sulfur occurrences point to a possibility for Frasch sulfur deposits in this part of western Canada.

The Coastal Water Authority's 2,740mm/2,590mm (108 in./102 in.) pipeline, known as the Northwest Lateral Project, will transport raw water from an existing pipeline over 14.3 km (8.9 miles) to the City of Houston's East Water Purification Plant. The new pipeline crosses under Houston Ship Channel and Greens Bayou in tunnels at approximately 30.5m (100 feet) and 25.9m (85 feet) depths, which present unique experiences in tunneling under open bodies of water in the Gulf Coast's soft ground conditions. An earth pressure balance TBM is being used for the deep tunnel sections where the ground demonstrates high overload factors and variable conditions ranging from clays to silty sands. This paper discusses the design approach for the tunnels and shafts, ground conditions, constructability, and selection of the primary lining system.

The development of highly selective mineral processing reagents, which are not merely metal-ion specific, but specific to the particular mineral surface structure, is essential for the exploitation of relatively more difficult-to-process ore deposits, in particular for the separation amongst minerals having the same constituent ion. Both the choice of the functional group as well as the molecular architecture of the reagent determine its selectivity. Several examples are presented in this paper to illustrate the concepts of structure specificity and molecular recognition at mineral surfaces - the concepts crucial to the advancement of the emerging science of reagents design. Recent advances made in the understanding of molecular interactions involved in the synthesis of biomineralized materials are discussed so as to delineate the utility of this approach in the design of selective reagents for mineral separation.

The design of the plant facilities together with the necessary equipment required for the operation is at an optimum only for the specified plant with its peculiar priorities and preferences. Because many alternatives in design are possible to suit a particular plant, each plant designer and contractor must choose carefully in the selection of the site, design and choice of materials of construction, as well as the type of equipment necessary for the process. Basic factors as efficiency, dependability, simplicity, and safety must be considered early in the construction; while the choice of equipment, materials of construction, possible corrosion problems, automation, maintenance, effluents disposal and tailings dam construction can greatly affect the plant costs. While existing plants are in operation, the know-how gained from the operating experience of those plants can be invaluable in the new plant planning, design, and construction.

In a long term program for the optimization of the Outokumpu Flash Smelting Furnace at Chagres Smelter many different subprograms are being developed. One of them is the design and application of a sampling method that can allow the direct diagnostic of the quality of the copper concentrates combustion. We present in this paper the evolution of the sampling devices used in a ten months of continuous sampling campaigns and an example for the sulfur elimination and magnetite formation in the flame from 60 cm to 100 cm under the burner. These type of information combined with the appropriate mathematical modeling of the combustion must propose some considerations to correct the classic criteria in the preparation of the charge for the smelting of copper concentrates based only on the mass and energy balance from the chemical and mineralogy composition of the concentrates.

The CIP process for gold recovery has enjoyed widespread application in most gold-producing countries. The development of a mathematical model of the CIP process has value for use in process design, process optimisation, and process control. Mathematical model development through laboratory experimentation is an important step in the design and optimisation of the CIP process. For this purpose, data has been generated through small scale laboratory leaching and adsorption tests both in batch and continuous mode. This test program has been carried out on specific ores of various types prior to the application of the models to production CIP plants utilising these ores. The applicability of leaching models derived from batch experiments was tested in a continuous five stage CIP pilot plant. The models were then adapted to scale-up the batch to the small scale continuous operation.

THE CHAIRMAN of the fast growing Petroleum Division is not only a graduate of the University of California, but a third generation native son. After a few years spent in hard-rock geology, his professional efforts were transferred to the sedimentaries and to petroleum investigations, as a consulting geologist. For ten years these investigations covered the Rocky Mountain, Oklahoma, Texas, and eastern districts. After the war he returned to Casper, Wyo., as chief geologist for the Consolidated Royalty Oil and Western Exploration Companies. This employment afforded him the opportunity to study particularly the economic relationship between the lessor-lessee interests in development and production, a somewhat unusual type of petroleum specialization.

A combination of new radiometric age dates, local field relationships and the regional tectonic history indicate that the low sulphidation, fault breccia-hosted, epithermal gold-silver mineralisation at Umuna is related to continental rifting processes rather than subduction induced deformation and magmatism. K-Ar and Ar-Ar age dating of secondary sericite associated with the gold-silver mineralisation indicates that the alteration crystallised between 4.0 and 3.2 Ma, whereas relative age relationships and SHRIMP II U-Pb dating of the abundant Boiou porphyry intrusions on Misima confirm that the calc-alkaline plutonism is significantly older (8.1 f 0.4 Ma) and related to a different tectonothermal event. The Woodlark Basin sea floor spreading centre occurs to the north of Misima and has continued to propagate westwards, into the continental basement of the Papuan Peninsular, since the end of the Miocene. The westernmost tip of sea floor spreading centre is presently to the east of the D'Entrecasteaux Islands but would have been to the east of Misima roughly 4 Ma. Many of the young tectonothermal features in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands (hydrothermal activity and associated epithermal mineralisation, metamorphic core complex exhumation, detachment faulting, peralkaline volcanism, half graben type basin formation) can be attributed to major extensional deformation ahead of the propagating rift system. Similar tectonothermal features on Misima are temporally associated with the epithermal gold-silver mineralisation at Umuna, suggesting that the D'Entrecasteaux Islands are a modern day tectonic analogue for Misima at the time of precious metal mobility and deposition. This paper presents the results of an economic analysis in the production opportunities of various co-product and minor metals in the base metals smelting 'industry. Pro forma cash flow statements were prepared for each co-product and/or minor metal analyzed utilizing US tax laws for items such as depreciation and taxes. The generated cash flows are based on anticipated revenues, estimated capital and operating costs (where applicable), and nominal production data for the respective co-products and minor metals. The economic analysis includes consideration of items such as metal payfors and bonus metals ,payments per current smelting terms. Sensitivity analysis to market prices is also ,addressed.

"The St. Lawrence Granite hosts vein-type fluorite mineralization that was mined until 1977. Recent drilling identified a significant fluorite-bearing structure hosted in adjacent meta-sedimentary country rocks. Several phases of vein fill and brecciation indicate there are three phases of fluorite mineralization, of which the later two phases are volumetrically significant. The earliest fluorite is purple and occurs along joint and fracture surfaces, in fault-breccia matrices, and as stockwork veins. The second phase comprises primarily red, yellow, blue-green, and white colours of fluorite. The latest phase is green with lesser clear fluorite. Identification of fluorite veins in the meta-sedimentary rocks opens up new areas for exploration.RÉSUMÉ Le granite St. Lawrence contient une minéralisation filonienne de fluorite, laquelle a été exploitée jusqu’en 1977. De récents forages ont permis d’identifier une structure importante contenant de la fluorite encaissée dans des roches métasédimentaires adjacentes. Les nombreuses phases de remplissage de filons et de formation de brèches indiquent qu’il y a eu trois phases de minéralisation de fluorite et les deux dernières sont importantes d’un point de vue volumétrique. La plus ancienne fluorite est mauve et se trouve le long de surfaces de joints et de fractures, dans les matrices de brèches de failles et en tant que stockwerks filoniens. La deuxième phase comprend surtout des fluorites de couleurs rouge, jaune, bleu-vert et blanc. La fluorite de la plus récente phase est verte avec des quantités moindres de fluorite claire. L’identification des filons de fluorite dans les roches métasédimentaires ouvre de nouveaux secteurs pour l’exploration."

Identifying the optimum ultimate height for heap leaching ore requires the consideration of a number of competing factors. A primary limitation is the reduction in the permeability of the ore with increasing heap heights. At low permeabilities the heap can blind off, cause serious ponding and runoff, and become very difficult to rinse at closure. The authors present a laboratory methodology that has been successfully used on several projects to identify the maximum height for controlling heap permeability.

Regulatory and environmental concerns continue to broaden the range of mine wastes that must be capped with low permeabili­ty liner systems at closure. The mining industry has been a leader in developing liner technology for leach pads and tailings impoundments, but it is a newcomer to cap designs. Closure of waste piles, leach heaps and tailings require special design con­siderations. Factos such as differential settlement, surface ero­sion, veneer stability, vegetation and burrowing animals must be considered.

One of the operations of the J. L. Shiely Co. is quarrying in a hard granite gneiss with intrusions of gabbro or trap. During the winter of 1948-1949 the quarry ramp was lowered about 30 ft and during the 1949 season practically all drilling was done from the quarry floor, developing a face from 72 to 83 ft for the entire quarry area. The performance and cost table shows our record for 1948 and 1949.

Many of the recent major achievements of our industry were visions of our forefathers in the 1800s. Only recently has technology been able to meet the vision of our predecessors. This paper follows the development of selected aspects of tunnelling from the 1800s to present day. It appears that, at the turn of the century, technology is beginning to catch up with our vision and we are able to put our ideas to work more quickly.
