Theoretical and experimental lockedness profile curves are the same when the model assumptions are met. They appear different because of the way the data is presented. Continuous theoretical lockedness profile curves present all the data, including the wings of the curves giving them the deep U-shaped configuration. Experimental lockedness profile curves, because of the measurement methods, are discretized, obscuring the wings. If the continuous theoretical curves are discretized, they are similar to the experimental curves. When a float sink test is used to measure an interval of locked particles, the integrated averaging of the separation process obscures the wings of the continuous theoretical curve. To disclose the wings with experimental data, narrow density or measurement intervals must be used.

The Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) requires a surface mine operator to post a performance bond before a mining permit can be issued to that operator. Release of that bond is contingent upon the completion of all required reclamation, restoration, and abatement work on the permit area. This paper explores the requirements of each of the three phases of reclamation under SMCRA, as well as provisions of four exemplar state regulations of four states that have been granted "primacy" under SMCRA. Successful completion of these requirements is a condition pre cedent to the release of performance bond liability. Failure to secure a timely bond release will have an ad verse impact on an operator's other mine permitting activities throughout the United States.

This paper is about a horizontally curved conveyor, which carries 6,050 stph of limestone over land from a new quarry to the owner's plant. The conveyor is 5,012 ft long with a horizontal curve radius of5,OOOft Site conditions made a curved conveyor design the most optimal and economic solution. Using our unique custom conveyor calculation program, TKRI was able to accurately model and design the conveyor to properly track the belt and prevent any spillage through the horizontal curve radius. A data monitoring system was installed that allows monitoring of the conveyor both locally and remotely. The remote monitoring allows TKRI to contact the owner for preventive maintenance. Preventive maintenance can reduce the conveyor downtime during normal operating hours.

An approach to treating flow through fractured rocks is presented which involves (1) determining statistical distributions for fracture area, density, orientation, and aperture from field data, (2) computer generation of fracture systems from the statistical distributions, and (3) analysis of the permeability and porosity of the fracture systems. The fracture density and orientation data my come from core logging or mapping. The hydraulically appropriate apertures and areas of the fractures come from transient flow analyses of single fracture well tests. These tests my also yield information on fracture deformability. Analysis of flow through computer generated fracture systems shows that an equivalent porous medium permeability can be defined for some fracture systems if a large number of fractures is taken into account.

Kidston Gold Mines Limited (70 per cent Placer Pacific and 30 per cent Public Shareholders) has been mining the Wises Hill Pit since late-1984. The Wises Hill Deposit is a large low grade gold deposit and as such is highly sensitive to economic parameters. The uniformity of the orebody has allowed a bulk mining method to be used, with minimal dilution. Total reserves defined to-date are 64 160 OOOT at a grade of 1.60 g/t gold. Mineable reserves remaining as of January 1992 are 36 357 OOOT at a grade of 1.28 g/t gold.Mining investigations to reduce the impact of lower gold prices, the effect of decreasing headgrade and increasing mining costs have focused on wall steepening.

Toxic fume concentrations from industrial mining explosives depend somewhat upon the type of rock (or other strata) confinement. Though traditional detonation theory disregards this influence, the work principal from thermodynamics reveals it, when the violent interactions that transpire within the rock blast are taken into proper account. Resolution of the work principle technique requires total thermodynamic equilibrium under constraint, so the nonequilibrium dynamics is rendered in that way, using an old trick from theoretical mechanics that revises the representation of forces. The rock pressure reduces to a four-component sum: the rock compressive strength and natural atmospheric pressure, as reckoned quasi-statically, and the gravitational influence and reversed inertial resistance, as reckoned dynamically. Tabulated specie concentrations and graphical trends reveal the dependency upon rock pressure, rock temperature and the fuel-oil percentage in ammonium nitrate mixtures (ANFO), used to illustrate the model. Rigid-wall test chambers have notable ullage (residual space), where rapid expansion influences the reaction quenching, yielding a fume spectrum unlike that for rock confinement; reported rock tests are therefore used for comparisons. For the thermodynamic regime where quenching occurs, seven concentrations are resolved, including carbon monoxide (CO) and total nitrogen oxides (NOX). Their trends yield inferences regarding the way unwanted charge desensitization from transitory hole-to-hole wave impact in conjunction with reduced rock pressure can yield nasty toxic fumes, the dark rusty cloud phenomenon!

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has completed a laboratory evaluation of exhaust emissions from a diesel engine using an oxygenated diesel fuel. The fuels tested were soy methyl esters in a neat (100%) form and low sulfur, petroleum number 2 diesel fuel (D2). The engine tested was a Caterpillar 3304, indirect injection, naturally aspirated, 75 kW, diesel engine that is typical of engines used in underground mining applications. The objective was to determine the extent to which oxygenated fuels, such as methyl esters, reduce diesel particulate matter (DPM), and their influence on upon gaseous emissions such as total hydrocarbons, CO, NOx, NO2, formaldehyde, and other exhaust emissions. Heavy- and light-duty transient tests were used to simulate load cycles typical of mine applications. The soy methyl ester fuel produced greater amounts of volatile DPM (organic material) but much less nonvolatile DPM (carbon soot) for overall DPM reductions. A diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) typical of the type commonly used in metal and nonmetal mines was tested with both fuels. The DOC further reduced the volatile and total DPM when used with the soy methyl esters, but increased the total DPM for D2 due to sulfate formation. The soy methyl ester fuel reduced CO and hydrocarbon, and NOx emissions. The DOC further reduced CO and hydrocarbon emissions.

As the investigation proceeded it became apparent that not only these details, but all the general features of austenite decomposition, could be understood in terms of fundamental physical principles. Since the direct applicability of these physical principles has not been previously recognized, it was decided to incorporate the original results of the investigation into a review of the general subject of the kinetics of austenite decomposition. This review constitutes the present article. An extended summary of the results is given on pages 576 to 579. This article, which deals with the kinetics of phase transformations, may appropriately be considered as a sequel to two recent articles1,2 from this laboratory on the equilibrium relations in medium alloy steels.

As the investigation proceeded it became apparent that not only these details, but all the general features of austenite decomposition, could be understood in terms of fundamental physical principles. The paper presents the results of a series of pull out tests performed on roof reinforcement systems currently being adopted in mines in Australia 7mm wire, dividag bar, 15.2mm strand cable, and birdcage cable. The study also investigated the load deformation chara- cteristics and the various design parameters controlling the effectiveness of a cable-grout system. A liga MA2024, reconhecida pelas aplicações em componentes aeronáuticos e automobilísticos, foi obtida por moagem em moinho atritor. Com o objetivo de melhorar as propriedades mecânicas, adições de 2,5%; 5%; 10% e 20% de reforço com tamanho de partícula inicial menor que 45 µm foi realizada em moinho planetário, com relação de carga:bolas de 3:1 e 15 minutos de moagem a 250 RPM. A consolidação dos corpos de prova cilíndricos foi realizada pela técnica de forjamento de precisão, em matriz fechada em forno tubular na temperatura de 490oC. A microestrutura foi avaliada por microscopia óptica e eletrônica, enquanto que a resistência mecânica foi avaliada por ensaio de microdureza. Os resultados de microscopia revelaram a formação de intermetálicos que influenciam de forma positiva e significativa no comportamento mecânico dos compósitos.

The U.S. Department of Interior's Bureau of Mines has the opportunity to visit many U.S. mines, including some that claim 2 to 5 times the national average of 334 raw tonnes/unit shift (tps) from a continuous miner section. In a project to assess the reasons for this high production, the Bureau conducted two studies. The first study focused on the 25 highest producing continuous miner sections. What stood out during the visits-was the quality of the labor-management relations. In each of the mines there was a positive labor/management relationship based on mutual trust and a sense that the employees were the company's most valuable resource. Discussions with labor revealed a universally positive attitude toward the company. Interviews with the mine superintendents invariably ranked the quality and attitude of workers as more important than anything else. Also during the mine visits of the 25- mine study, no engineering factors obviously stood out. Time at the face was greater than average, most were in coal over 1.52 m and the roof was generally good. Also, none of the 25 mines had to contend with high methane levels. Because this study found that a high percentage of mines were in seams less than 1.52 m thick, the second study examined thin seam mines only.

This paper point out the discussion and evaluation of the non-conventional water resources; the discussion of the results of a multicriteria analysis which allows understanding and evaluating the differences; advantages and disadvantages from the technical-economical, social and environmental point of view of the non conventional water supply options: re use of municipal waste water as compared to seawater supply and its two sub options: raw seawater and desalinated seawater. The results show that there are advantages and disadvantages to each approach, but that use of non-conventional water resources is a viable option for mining companies.

ONE of the interesting-though not unnatural-features of the whole Porphyry Copper development is the way in which the history of each property dovetails with that of one or more of the others. The same names keep cropping up as one digs into the accounts of events from 1900 to 1915. J. Parke Channing made examinations of Nevada, Ray, and Inspiration, as well as of Miami. Henry Krumb did important work in the early stages of the exploitation of Utah, Nevada, Ray, Braden, and Inspiration. Pope Yeatman was favorably impressed with the Braden property before he had ever visited it, when he saw a batch of Braden ore sent to the United States for testing. It reminded him immediately of Nevada Consolidated ore: indeed, he was unwilling at first to believe that it came from South America. And it was while working on the examination at Utah Copper that Philip Wiseman became enthused with the possibilities of the Ray mines. In 1905, Mr. Krumb, under the general direction of A. Chester Beatty, was strenuously engaged at Bingham, Utah, in arriving at an answer to this question: Should or should not the Guggenheim interests back Jackling to the tune of several million dollars to build the big concentrators at Gafield? Seeley W. Mudd was the Guggenheim engineer on the Pacific coast and in that capacity was indirectly responsible for the work at Bingham. At his suggestion Wiseman came up from Los Angeles as one of Krumb's assistants-at $5 per day, incidentally. A little later Mr. Mudd, in Utah on one of his visits, went down to Bingham. That evening in the old Hills Hotel in Markham Gulch he was going over reports with Mr. Krumb. Wiseman and some of the other engineers on Krumb's staff were present. DURING the four years, 1922, 1923, 1924, and 1925, China produced the following quantities of non-ferrous metals and ores: Antimony Products - 67,869 (long) tons. The production for 1925 was 20,869 tons, of which 80% was regulus, 14% crude,and 6% oxide.Arsenic (White) - 4200 tons. The production for 1925 was 1200 tons, but only 90 tons were exported, some 25% of which to Hong-Kong, France, and U.S.A. each, and the rest in small lots to other countries. Domestic consumption was 1110 tons, and thelocal price for "cake" was around £47 per ton on 1925 exchange.Arsenic Ore (Realgar) - 1400 tons.Lead Ore (Galena) - 44,853 tons. The production for 1925 was 10,853 tons, of which 16%, produced in Korea, went to Japan, and 84% produced in Hunan, went to Europe.Manganese Ore (Pyrolusite) - 142,567 tons. The production for 1925 was 42,567 tons, of which 94.3% went to Japan.Tin Ingot - 33,480 tons. In 1925 the exports to Hong-Kong were 8880 tons of usual rough tin of 94% to 96%. Most of this was refined to No. I Chinese quality of 99.3% and exported to U.S.A. and Europe, owing to the good price ruling.Sulphur - 12,000 tons. Since 1988, there have been thirteen documented incidents in the United States and Canada in which carbon monoxide (CO) is suspected to have migrated through near surface strata into structures or other enclosed spaces as a result of nearby trench blasting or surface mine blasting. From these incidents, there are thirty suspected or medically verified CO poisonings and one fatality associated with these incidents. To better understand the variables contributing to this hazard, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) carried out a small-scale field study to identify key factors that may contribute to the migration of CO through the ground. NIOSH conducted single-hole heavily confined experimental test shots to measure the radial pressure pulse as it propagated through surrounding monitoring holes to determine if a relationship existed between the pressure pulse and resulting CO measurements afterwards. NIOSH also monitored blasts at an airport construction site. Following the detonations, the concentrations of CO, nitric oxide (NO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were monitored for several days in the surrounding satellite holes. The peak CO measurements relative to distances from the shots were compared. Pressure histories and peak particle velocities (PPV) were measured at monitoring boreholes. It was found that the differential pressures recorded within the boreholes give some indication as to the likelihood of CO appearing, whereas the PPV measurements do not seem to be as good an indicator for potential CO migration. In this limited study, changes in barometric pressure had very little influence on removing the trapped detonation products, whereas applying a vacuum to the monitoring holes was effective in reducing the entrapped CO concentration.

The $2.5 billion EastLink project is a 39 km tollway and includes twin three-lane, 1.5 km long, undrained driven tunnels with cross passages every 120 m. The hard rock tunnels are being built to avoid passing the motorway through the Mullum Mullum Valley and help preserve the unique flora and fauna in the area. The design of the permanent concrete lining and waterproofing system for the EastLink tunnels was both innovative and practical, to meet the demanding environmental and production constraints of AustraliaÆs largest road project. This paper describes several key aspects of the tunnel design and construction, including: design of fully tanked, permanent concrete tunnel linings for the main tunnels and cross passages to withstand 37 m head of water pressure in combination with potential rock loading in the future;optimisation of the tunnel shape to minimise the amount of reinforcement required and the design of special welded mesh which was developed within manufacturing constraints;100 year design life and durability considerations in every aspect and detail of the design including concrete mix design and stray current mitigation;development of a precast invert solution for the main tunnel permanent concrete lining to enable faster lining construction and to minimise risks to the tunnel membrane associated with fixing reinforcement and construction traffic;development of prefabricated reinforcement details for the junctions between the main tunnels and the cross passages to enable faster construction and minimise risks to the membrane associated with fixing reinforcement; andincorporating the tunnel drainage sump at the lowest cross passage in the alignment, resulting in deep excavation to satisfy the required storage volumes for drainage.
