En ese sentido, el presente texto señala los elementos de estrategia de creación para el tercer mundo a través de la organización de la ciencia y la identificación de los problemas. En este punto, los objetivos esenciales son la inducción de la participación activa de toda sociedad en el proceso de generación de soluciones tecnológicas y la reorientación de la acción del sistema científico y tecnológico para hacerlo más flexible y receptivo a las demandas sociales.

Canada has a long history of marine-related industry and onshore mining. Even so, commercial interest in marine mining, excluding seawater mineral extraction and offshore extensions of hardrock deposits such as iron and coal, has been sporadic; despite the fact that shelf mineral deposits supply a significant proportion of the national market requirements for many countries. Several factors have accounted for this including: a relative abundance of onland mineral desposits; the fact that onland deposits can be mined using conventional technology; and, a general lack of knowledge and public awareness as to Canadian offshore non-fuel mineral resource potential. In the mid-1970s the Department of Energy, Mines & Resources formed the Departmental Coordinating Committee on Ocean Mining. The Committee addressed the question of shelf non-fuel mineral resource potential and concluded that, while several reports had raised the possibilty of this alternative source, there had not been a systematic evaluation of the resource base. This led to the formation of a Shelf Working Group, whose task it was to outline and implement a departmental program to advance our knowledge of shelf resource potential. En este trabajo se analizan algunas posibilidades de tratamiento de la atacamita con el objeto de posibilitar la extracción del cobre que contiene, así como la del oro que muchas veces acompaña a estos minerales. Se ha probado el esquema lixiviación ácida de cobre seguido de cianuración, así como la flotación y segregación. Los resultados indican que existe una gran posibilidad de tratarlos con éxito mediante métodos de segregación.

This paper presents a dynamic model for column flotation. The model equations are normalized and the dimensionless groups that are directly responsible in determining the column flotation behavior are identified. The resulting model equations are incorporated for computer simulation. Numerical results from computer simulations are analyzed to gather information about design and operation of column flotation devices.

The Department of Mineral Resources of Thailand is organising, on behalf of the Government of Thailand and the International Tin Council, the Second Technical Conference on Tin. The Conference will be held at Sala Santitham, Bangkok from 18th to 22nd November, 1969. Papers will be grouped under three main headings: (i) Geology and prospecting; (ii) Mining and ore dressing; (iii) Miscellaneous, e.g. stimulating production, metallurgy, estimation of reserves etc. Pre-prints of papers will be circulated. Fragmentation has a direct impact on mine costs and productivity. Computer programs have been developed to calculate fragmentation using data on the properties of the explosive, the characteristics of the rock, the rock mass and the blast pattern. While computer models can yield good data, conclusions must be verified. Fragmentation assessment, muckpile surveys or high speed film analysis of rock mass movement are some of the techniques that have been used to confirm blast results. Digitizing photos of the muckpile is now the most common method to assess fragmentation. But it has some drawbacks. Although automatic electronic imaging equipment speeds up the process, the results depend on the photographs. Shadows will distort results. High resolution, black-and-white prints are essential.

As part of its mission to reduce pollution associated with mineral production, the Bureau of Mines is developing a dewatering technique for phosphatic clay waste that uses a flocculant, polyethylene oxide (PEO). This flocculant forms strong, stable flocs, which can be partially dewatered on a static screen and dewatered further on a rotary screen. Using this technique, a field test unit (FTU) was operated at a nominal 100 gal/min. Consolidated phosphatic clay material containing 20 percent solids was produced when feed slurries of 3 percent solids were treated with 0.69 pound of PEO per ton of feed solids. Pit and column tests indicated that the PEO-treated material continued to dewater; compacted products containing 40 percent solids were obtained after 45 days.
