Las técnicas estadísticas multivariantes (análisis factorial y el análisis cluster), permiten establecer el grado de interdependencia y la relevancia de las correlaciones múltiples entre las variables estudiadas (46 elementos traza), características que no se pueden determinar con los métodos descriptivos tradicionales. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo aborda la investigación realizada a la cuenca del río Huaura, Lima, donde se efectuó un muestreo de sedimentos activos de corriente en 393 estaciones representativamente distribuidas. Dichas muestras han sido tamizadas con la malla 200 y analizadas por el método ICP-MS, previa digestión con agua regia, con el objetivo de determinar elementos traza distintivos en sedimentos activos, de acuerdo al ambiente geológico del cual provienen, mediante su comportamiento multivariante, dispersión y distribución geoquímica secundaria y así identificar elementos traza de interés minero, relacionados a los elementos traza distintivos previamente definidos.

Neste trabalho é apresentado os resultados de um estudo experimental com tijolos de solo-cimento vazado, com diferentes adições de resíduos de borracha vulcanizada oriundas da indústria de recauchutagem de pneus. Foram realizados ensaios de caracterização do solo utilizado, das composições desse solo com resíduos de borracha e das misturas de solo-cimento produzidas com essas composições. Conforme os resultados de ensaios realizados em corpos-de-prova cilíndricos e em tijolos de solo-cimento, verificou-se que: ainda não é possível a introdução do resíduo de borracha de pneus de pneus em blocos de solo-cimento, pois não atendem características da NBR-10834 [4] e precisam ser melhor avaliados.

El presente trabajo describe la geología de la mina Toquepala -en tanto genera información de modelos geológicos y numéricos para realizar un planeamiento corto largo plazo de calidad, especialmente en los bordes del cuerpo donde la ley se hace marginal, así también se facilita a la concentradora, las características geometalurgicas del mineral a ser tratado en corto y largo plazo, considerando el costo beneficio y planificación de sus recuperaciones. Finalmente, se muestra los controles geológicos para dar soporte a las operaciones minerometalúrgicas, tales como el mapeo, control de leyes, reconciliaciones, microscopia de opacos, y los reportes de control diario, mensual y anual.

Black coals occur in most of the major sedimentary basins in Australia. In addition to the better known Permian coal occurrences of the Sydney, Bowen, Oaklands and Galilee Basins, coals of Permian age occur in the Arckaringa Basin in South Australia, the Bonaparte Basin in Northern Territory and the Collie, Perth and Canning Basins in Western Australia and the Tasmania Basin in Tasmania. Coals of Triassic age occur in the Ipswich Callide and Tarong Basins in Queensland, the Tasmania Basin in Tasmania and the Leigh Creek area in South Aus- tralia. Coal bearing rocks of Jurassic age occur in the Mulgildie Basin and Maryborough Basins in Queensland and in both the Queensland and New South Wales portions of the Clarence Moreton Basin and Surat Basins. They also occur in the Perth Basin in Western Australia. Rocks of Cretaceous age known to contain coal occur in the Styx, Maryborough and Laura Basins in Queensland, the Gippsland Basin in Victoria and both the Queensland and New South Wales portions of the Surat Basin. The coal measures have been deposited in a variety of sedimentary environments and the coals vary widely with regard to thickness, extent, banding characteristics, maceral and ash content. However, they are generally of low rank and most are suitable only for steaming.

The 1980s marked a boom in gold mining and exploration in the United States particularly in the state of Nevada which lifted this country to second place in the world, after South Africa, in gold production. With this boom came many positive aspects such as increased employment, increased investment, increased payment of federal and local taxes, higher purchases of goods and services and higher expenditures on social and economic uplift programs. With the arrival of Minera Yanacocha in Peru in 1992, the gold mining boom shifted to this country which has lifted Peru to first place in Latin America in 1996 and ninth place in the world in gold production. As in the case of the United States in the 1980s, similar positive impacts are being felt throughout Peru in the 1990s.

ThRee great deposits of iron-ore, in Camaguey and Oriente Provinces, Cuba, are well known to me through careful field-examinations executed in the years 1901 and 1907. In 1901 I visited the Cubitas iron-ore district, which lies about 12 miles distant from the city of Camaguey in a northerly direction, and the Mayari district, which includes the Sierra Nipe, lying opposite Nipe bay on the north side of Oriente Province. In 1907 I again visited the Cubitas district, and also made a sojourn of several days in the Moa district, where the extensive deposits of iron-ore were observed and studied. The observations of 1901 were made under the auspices of the then Military Governor of Cuba, Gen. Leonard Wood, and my conclusions concerning the value of these deposits were incorporated in a report.' The examination of certain denouncements of iron-ore in the Moa district in 1907 was made in behalf of iron-masters operating in the United States, to whom I reported the existence of large amounts of easily-workable limonitic iron-ore, properly designated " brown iron-ore " in the terminology now current among iron-ore producers in the United States. In 1908 I published a paper entitled, Three Deposits of Iron Ore in Cuba, outlining the occurrence and origin of the surfi-cia1 ores existing in the Cubitas, Mayari, and Moa districts.2

"The present study was carried out to evaluate the mechanical properties of friction stir welded Inconel 600/SS 400 lap joints. In this process, friction stir welding (FSW) was performed at a tool rotation speed of 200 rpm and welding speed of 100 mm1min, and argon gas was utilized to prevent surface oxidation during the welding. Application of FSW notably decreases the grain size of Inconel 600 alloy from 20 µm in the base material to 8 ~ in the stir zone. However, the grain size of SS 400 in the weld zone was slightly coarsened, when compared to the base material. Also, the hooking in the advancing side and the intermetal1ic compounds (M7C3) in the weld interface between Incone1 600 and SS 400 were well formed. These intermetallic compounds and hooking were effective to increase in mechanical properties such as tensile and peel strengths.IntroductionFriction stir welding (FSW), applicable welding process at solid state, has several advantages in defect suppression such as blow hole, segregation and cracking which mainly occurs in fusion welding [1, 2]. Notable grain refinement in the stir zone due to FSW can expect the outstanding increase in mechanical properties of the welds. In constructing the chemical and power plants, Ni base superal10ys have been used in many parts, moreover, fusion welding as construct method, such as gas tungsten arc welding, electron beam welding and laser welding, has been mainly used [3-5]. However, fusion welding has a limit in an increase in chemical and mechanical properties in the welds. Lately, Ni base superalloys to which FSW applied have been reported with notable enhancement in mechanical properties, which resulted from refined grains in the welds [6-10]. These researches showed the possibility in applying the FSW, directly."

Like wax or spermaceti in appearance and consistency. Colorless to white when pure; often leelr-green, yellowish, brownish yellow, brown. Indices, 1.51-1'54. Essentially a paraffin, and consisting chiefly of one of the higher members of the series. Occurs in beds of coal, or associated bituminous deposits, as at Slanik, Moldavia; Roumania; Boryslaw in the Carpathians. Also occurs in southern Utah on a large scale.

Partnering has come to prominence in the Australian construction industry in a formal sense this decade. The high level of disputation in the building and civil construction industries in the 1980s drove its development in both Australia and North America. PartneringÆs use has been most prominent in the construction industry, particularly in the civil and construction sectors of the industry. It has found favour in some mining development projects, one of the most notable being BHP MineralÆs Cannington project in NW Queensland. This paper examines the requirements of successful partnering agreements and describes in detail the mine development partnering agreement at Cannington. In particular, the paper discusses the authorÆs experience and recommendations for partnering to avoid contractual problems and achieve win û win project outcomes for all parties to major mining projects.

Prof C T O'Connor holds the degrees of BSc, BSc Hons, University of Cape Town (UCT), where he started his academic Lecturer in the Department of Physical Chemistry in 1976. Mr P Smith, educated in England and the former Southern Rhodesia, joined Gold Fields of South Africa in 1966 as a Metallurgical Learner Official. After obtaining a BSc Eng at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1972, he returned to Gold Fields. Mr P D K Robinson was born in Zimbabwe, and was educated at Dale College in Kingwilliamstown, matriculating in 1952. He holds a Mine Surveyor's Certificate obtained in 1961) and a Mine Manager's Certificate (obtained in 1966), as well as an EDP from the University of the Witwatersrand.

Zinc ranks third and lead fourth in world nonferrous metal conumption. In 1972 the free world consumed 3,333,000 mt of refined lead and 4,422,000 mt of refined zinc. The lead tonnage was divided into the following end uses: storage batteries (42%), lead allows (7%), pigments and chemicals (11%), cable sheathing (9%), gasoline additives (13%), pipes and sheets (8%), and miscellaneous uses (10%). The corresponding distribution of zinc uses in 1972 was galvanizing (39%), die casting (26%), brass (15%), rolled zinc (8%), oxide excluding American Process zinc made directly from concentrate (6%), and other uses (6%). The pattern of usage of lead and zinc varies considerably from country to country. During 1972 in the USA 49% of refined lead was consumed in storage batteries, 19% in gasoline additives, and only 3% in cable sheathing, whereas in the United Kingdom 28% of the lead was consumed in batteries, 14% in cable sheathing, and 14% in gasoline additives. For zinc the major US uses were die casting (41%) and galvanizing (37%), with about 3% consumed as rolled zinc; corresponding usages in the same applications in France were 12, 28 and 28% and in Australia 12, 67, and 3%, respectively. James W. Malcolmson died suddenly on Dec. 26, 1917, at Kansas City, Mo., where he had made his home for the past ten years. He was born at Dover, Kent, England, on Oct. 6, 1866. He graduated from the Royal School of Science, London, England, in 1889, and almost immediately after graduation came to Mexico, accepting a position with the Michoacan Railway and Mining Co., as mining and mechanical engineer. His work in the mining profession was carried on principally in Msxiac and the United States. • In 1888, he married Katherine Haden Krause, of Woolwich, Kent, England, and leaves, besides his wife, five sons and one daughter. During Mr. Malcolmson's long and successful career as a mining engineer, he was connected with the following companies: from 1889 to 1893, with the Michoacan Railway and Mining Co., as mining and mechanical engineer; from 1893 to 1898, in various capacities with the Kansas City Smelting & Refining Co.; after the consolidation of the Kansas City Smelting & Refining Co. with the American Smelting & Refining Co., he remained as manager of the mining department in Mexico of the American Smelting & Refining Co. until 1902. In 1902, he located in El Paso, and took up the practice of his profession as a consulting engineer. While there, he was consulting engineer for the famous and rich Pedrazzini mines at Chispas, in the State of Sonora. He was instrumental in organizing the La Republics mine in Chihuahua, and for a time acted as consulting engineer for the property. He remained in El Paso until 1907 and then moved to Kansas City and became associated with the United States & Mexican Trust Co., as consulting engineer. In 1909, he became connected with The Lucky Tiger Combination Gold Mining Co., as its consulting engineer, and continued in this connection and in the general practice of his profession as consulting engineer until his death.. His general policy in connection with the Lucky Tiger company was always a progressive one and the success of the enterprise can be largely attributed to him and his good judgment. Mr. Malcolmson contributed several articles to the Institute at different times, one of them being on the ore deposits of the Sierra Mojada Mining District, in 1901. Much of his work was in Mexico, and during his long residence in that country he acquired a very thorough knowledge of the Mexican people and their customs. During the revolution, from 1910 to 1916, this knowledge was of great value in connection with his work for the Lucky Tiger company, and often assisted greatly in keeping the property going. Mr. Malcolmson was one of the very widely known men in his profession; he was everywhere held in the very highest regard, and his position among men in the mining profession was an enviable and honorable one. At the time of his death, besides being consulting engineer for the Lucky Tiger company, he was interested in mines in the Miami zinc fields and was acting as consulting engineer for two of the operating properties there. He invested to quite an extent in real estate when he moved to Kansas City in 1907 and his investments in this line proved successful.

The effect of stresses and acoustic emissions on the gas permeability of coal was investigated in the field and the laboratory in order to find an estimative method of the practicability of gas drainage. In the field, acoustic emissions and gas emissions during gas drainage drilling were monitored tentatively at some coal mines in Japan and China.In the laboratory, acoustic emissions from coal specimens in addition to gas permeability were measured during the triaxial compression loading in order to interpret the results monitored in the field. Besides, the opening of gas permeation channels in coal was considered on the basis of the experimental results.

The death of Privy Councilor Bruno Kerl, on March 25, 1905, terminated a distinguished and useful career. Bruno Kerl was born March 24, 1824, at St. Andreasberg in the Harz, and entered in 1840 the mining school of Claus-thal, where he studied for three years, working at the same time in the mines and stamp-mills. After an additional year of practice in the silver-reduction and iron-works of the Upper Harz, he passed his examination as a metallurgical graduate, and studied for a gear at Göttingen under Wöhler in chemistry, Hausmann in mineralogy, and eminent teachers in other branches. In 1846 he was employed at the Oker works, but very soon left this post, to become a tutor in chemistry, metallurgy, etc., at Clausthal, where he continued to labor until 1867. During this period the Clausthal school became a completely equipped Mining Academy, and Kerl was made in 1862 a full professor. Total U.S. mineral production reached an estimated $17.8 billion for 1960, 4 pct above 1959 and second only to the record high of $18.1 billion established in 1957. As a group, metals achieved a rise from $1.6 billion in 1959 to $2.0 billion this year, an increase of 28 pct. Similarly the value of nonmetallic production including fuels (i.e., natural gas, petroleum, natural-gas liquids, asphalt and related bitumens, carbon dioxide. anthracite. bituminous and lignite coal, peat, and helium) rose from $15.5 billion in 1959 to approximately $15.8 billion in 1960. However, this 2 pct increase in the total value of non-metallic production was due to an increase in the value of the fuels ($11.8 billion in 1959 to $12.2 billion in 1960) which offset a drop in value of the other nonmetallic minerals ($3.7 billion in 1959 to $3.6 billion in 1960).

Plant tests of magnetic conditioning have shown increased flotation recovery of paramagnetic sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, sphalerite and pentlandite) in the -38 ¦m size fraction within rougher and cleaner flotation circuits. A statistical plant test was undertaken in the Mount Isa zinc flotation circuit where magnetic conditioning was tested simultaneously in both the rougher circuit and the cleaner retreat circuit (cleaner scavenger). This test resulted in a normalised increase of 1.60 per cent in the rougher circuit zinc recovery and simultaneously a normalised increase of 4.60 per cent in the cleaner retreat circuit zinc recovery - to a very high level of statistical confidence. Interestingly, in a novel approach, it was possible to verify the plant test results in two ways. Firstly, detailed MLA analysis of the tails confirmed the statistical plant test results and showed that the greatest effect of magnetic conditioning was on the sphalerite in the C3 - C6 size fraction, where there was a reduction of around 15 per cent in zinc in tails. Moreover, there was a reduction of around 15 per cent in liberated sphalerite across all -38 ¦m size fractions, but only a seven per cent reduction in non-liberated sphalerite in the tails. Secondly, plant modelling showed that increasing the rougher zinc recovery would cause an increase in zinc feed grade to the cleaner retreat circuit. The increase in the zinc feed grade to the cleaner retreat circuit with magnetic conditioning was demonstrated to a very high level of statistical confidence.CITATION:Gurnett, I, Voigt, P, Lumsden, B and Lines, P, 2012. To date developments in the simulation of carbon-in-pulp (CIP) adsorption circuits have focused primarily on the modeling of adsorption. This series of three papers describes a development in a direction that has received less attention, i.e. the need for a detailed description of the movement of carbon and slurry in continuous CIP and carbon-in-leach (CIL) plants. A new simulator has been developed based on the population-balance approach for modeling the movement of carbon and slurry. Existing adsorption and leaching models are evaluated in this paper in order to establish which are appropriate for use in the new simulator. The details of the simulator are given in Part 2 of this series.

Ever since the introduction of Liquid oxygen explosives in India in 1927, these explosives are being extensively used in the various mining industries such as coal, ironore, limestone, bauxite, magnesite etc. The earlier LOX compositions were based on cellulosic material of Weberlox series of French origin. They contained the basic ingredients of saw dust with an admixture of cork dust, some hydrocarbons and some metallic powders. However, there were some inherent defects in the soaking characteristics of these compositions, in as much as, absorption and retention of liquid oxygen in the cartridges were not properly regulated in the fine pores and in the inter-granular spaces inside the ingredients in a uniform manner.

Cecil John Irving was born on 13th March, 1902. He was educated at King Edward's School in Birmingham, and at the University of Birmingham, where he graduated in B.Sc. Mining Metallurgy in 1922, and in B.Sc. Metal Mining on 7th July, 1923. Johannesburg 1986 The biggest mining exhibition ever held in Africa and several allied international conferences are to be staged in Johannesburg in September of next year.
