The fire-clays of New Jersey belong in two geological ages, the cretaceous and quaternary, or post-tertiary. Three very small deposits of plastic clays have been discovered within the limits of the Archæan rocks. These are not refractory and of little importance, excepting in a geological consideration. They have resulted from a decomposition of the feldspars of the rock in situ, and they have been classified as inferior kaolins.

The AuPlus" Systems have been applied in the gold mining industry to achieve improved gold recoveries, faster leach kinetics and reduced cyanide consumptions. Calcium or hydrogen peroxide, collectively known as peroxygens, can be used. The choice depending on plant design and the nature of the ore. THE tensile and notch tensile ductile-to-brittle transition characteristics of several refractory metals and alloys have been well documented.1-3 Electron-beam melted tantalum and columbium have been shown to retain excellent ductility at very low temperatures. Some indications of brittle behavior (low ductility and cleavage fracture) were observed with columbium tested at -253oC, but no similar effects were noticed with tantalum. Increasing the interstitial oxygen content in these two materials resulted in the detection of indications of brittle behavior at higher temperatures, although good ductility was retained in both bases at -196°C when they contained about 1 at. pet 0. Detailed descriptions of the impact transition behavior of these two materials at various purity levels have not been available. This technical note describes the effect of interstitial oxygen on the impact properties of wrought, fibered tantalum and columbium and compares the transition behavior to the previously determined tensile transition characteristics. Tantalum and columbium impact specimens with three different interstitial oxygen levels indicated in Table I were tested at temperatures ranging from -196o to 300°C. This paper deals with the effects of various bit geometric parameters on the failure characteristics of rock material. Improving the rock-cutting efficiency of continuous mining machines has proven to be an interesting research topic during the last few decades. In the current study, an automated rotary rock-cutting simulator, duplicating a continuous miner, was used to study these parameters in the laboratory. The improvement of bit performance in terms of its life, cutting efficiency, dust production and energy consumption has drawn widespread attention. Research has demonstrated that optimizing bit parameters can result in efficient fragmentation of rock. Indiana limestone rock material was used in this study. The bit tip angle, bit tip size, bit spacing, depth of cut and cutting velocity of the rotary drum were varied to investigate the failure characteristics. The cutting pressure, penetrating pressure and the depth of cut were monitored on the simulator during the cutting process. Airborne dust and settled dust were measured for each experiment. Then, the specific airborne dust and specific energy were determined for each type of bit. Triaxial tests were carried out to correlate the failure angle of the rock in the static case to the dynamic cutting process failure. The physical and mechanical properties of the rock were also determined to assess their influence on the wear characteristics of each bit.

In June 1914, one week before I was to be awarded my sheepskin in upper New York State, I received a telegram from New York City which read "Can offer you position as engineer in Chile at $115 a month contract for one year. (signed) Chile Copper Co." That night, Friday, I took a sleeper to New York and arrived at the Guggenheim Brothers' company office at 165 Broadway, just as it was opening up on Saturday morning. Saturday was no holiday in that era. Presenting the telegram at the office, I was ushered into a sub-executive's office and shown a mimeographed contract which 1) agreed to pay me $115 per month from the date of leaving New York until I returned, and with travelling expenses both ways, 2) fixed a charge of $46 per month for board and lodging in company quarters, and 3) stipulated a contract term of one year with the right to retain my services for another year if the company so elected. While a bit huffed at the year's "kicker" I nevertheless accepted. I was then told to prepare to leave the following Wednesday (June 17) on a United Fruit Co. steamer for Panama. Objecting that I still had to receive my degree on the 17th and had planned a vacation in Ohio for a week or so…

Like other influence function methods, the SWIFT subsidence prediction program, developed within the Mineral Resources Engineering Department at the University of Nottingham, requires calibration to regional data in order to produce accurate predictions of ground movements. Previously, this software had been solely calibrated to give results consistent with the Subsidence Engineer's Handbook (NCB, 1975). This approach was satisfactory for the majority of cases based in the United Kingdom, upon which the calibration was based. However, in certain circumstances within the UK and, almost always, in overseas case studies, the predictions did not correspond to observed patterns of ground movement. Therefore, in order that SWIFT, and other subsidence prediction packages, can be considered more universal, an improved and adaptable method of regional calibration must be incorporated. This paper describes the analysis of a large database of case histories from the UK industry and international publications. Observed maximum subsidence, mining geometry and Geological Index for several hundred cases have been statistically analysed in terms of developing prediction models. The models developed can more accurately predict maximum subsidence than previously used systems but also, are capable of indicating the likely range of prediction error to a certain degree of probability. Finally, the paper illustrates how this statistical approach can be incorporated as a calibration system for the influence function program, SWIFT.

Benin's industrial sector experienced severe economic and financial problems in 1986, including disappointing performances of the Onigbolo cement plant and the Semé Oilfield, plus a shortage of technically trained personnel and experienced management. Oil production remained about 1,000 barrels per day. Import and export trade between Benin and the United States remained minimal. Because much of Benin's outstanding external debt was in U.S. dollars, the stronger dollar greatly increased the debt burden. The 1985 budget of $304 million' was composed of an investment budget of $194 million and a current budget of $110 million. Of the investment budget, 84% was expected to be externally financed. About $45 million was given to three priority projects: the joint Benin-Togo Nangbeto hydroelectric project scheduled for completion in 1986; drilling of new exploratory wells of the Semé petroleum project, and the Dassa-Parakou highway. The budget deficit was projected to exceed $43 million despite a decrease in projected revenue owing to an anticipated decline of 25% in import tax revenue, normally the largest source of Government revenue.

In the spring of 1915, then a 30-year old geologist in the employ of the E. J. Longyear Co., of Minneapolis, Minn., I accompanied prospectors to ex- amine outcrops of supposed nickel ore situated a mile or two in from the shore of a lake in the Kenora district of northwestern Ontario. The deposit proved to be bog iron ore containing traces of nickel. We were stormbound there for three days, a circumstance which gave rise to a tale that was told at our fire one night. It seems that Sandy and Jock, two prospectors, were crossing the bay of a large lake in a canoe. They were bucking headwinds; the waves grew higher. Jock called out from the stern, "Sandy, can ye na pray a little." Sandy pressed his knees a little closer into the bow and, between strokes of his paddle, sought for words, which came haltingly, "Save us this time . . . Oh Lord . . . and we promise . . ." when Jock, peering through the spray sang out, "I would na commit yourself, Sandy, I think I see lond ahead."

In March of 2001 Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Inc. began evaluating the potential benefits of electronic detonators at the Betze Post open pit gold mine. The original evaluation focused on increased fragmentation, and excavator productivity. During the original evaluation there was an attempt to quantify mill throughput. Early tests indicated that there would be a benefit to mill throughput, however management was hesitant to take on the added cost of electronic detonators based on the initial evaluation. In early 2002 a decrease in mill throughput was being forecast as a result of harder ore being encountered. As a result of the initial electronic detonator evaluation a team of individuals from the Open Pit and Process areas worked closely on the Drill-to-Mill (D2M) Continuous Improvement initiative. This initiative was targeted at improving mill throughput as the harder ores were encountered. Batch tests were conducted to determine if adjustments to drilling and blasting in the open pit could increase mill throughput and justify a 50% increase in drilling and blasting costs for the harder ore material.

This paper summarizes the characteristics of Southern African coals, presents a fundamental approach to the combustion performance of coal, and reviews some of the recent developments in the fields of technological evaluation and boiler design for coals typical of this region. This includes a summary of the petrographic constituents of coa~ highlighting the differences between the Palaeozoic coals of the northern and southern hemispheres (Laurasia and Gondwana respectively), and the effects of these properties on the combustion performance of coal as seen in terms of laboratory, pilot-scale, and full-scale operating conditions. Recent developments in boiler design linked to advanced characterization studies and commercial experience have led to unprecedented use, with maximum effect, of the low-grade, high-ash, high-inertinite coals typical of some parts of this region. In the light of this success, more adequate understanding and better methods of assessment of the coals typical of the Gondwana region are called for, particularly in the light of the price premium for high-grade coal and the more cost-effective lower grade coals on the international steam markets.

Geological and hydrological conditions in the strata overlying the Salado Formation vary considerably in the Carlsbad, NM, area. The first four shafts sunk at International Minerals and Chemical Corp. (IMC) property have been located in competent and essentially dry conditions, while other shafts on adjacent properties have had such adverse conditions that ground freezing has been chosen as the water and ground control technique for shaft sinking. At the location of the IMC No. 5 shaft there has been extensive erosion and salt dissolution in the Rustler Formation, leading to collapse of some zones of the strata. Both ground freezing and pregrouting were considered as alternative methods of stabilizing the extremely poor ground conditions and controlling the potentially very heavy water inflows. It was decided that pregrouting the shaft was feasible and would offer substantial cost and time saving over a ground freezing technique. This paper describes the pregrouting techniques used and illustrates the requirement for flexibility in a grouting program so that it can be modified to reflect any new or additional information obtained during the progress of the grouting.

A total of 260 micropiles were installed as part of a retrofit effort for two existing bridges. The micropiles consisted of hollow core bars installed under limited headroom conditions. Of the total number of micropiles, 180 were installed in submerged sand and 80 were installed in stiff, silty clay. The micropiles were drilled using a lean cement grout which was re-circulated for de-sanding and re-use. Final grout was injected upon completion of drilling to the design tip elevation. The micropiles were subject to a rigorous quality control that included grout quality testing and proof-testing of each production micropile. This paper presents a description of the procedure for installation and quality control of the micropiles. The successful proof-testing of all the production micropiles showed that hollow core bar micropiles can be used effectively in granular and fine-grained soils. Hollow core bar micropiles offer particular advantages when installed in submerged sand formations with respect to other traditional micropile types. The results of the proof load tests are presented in a companion paper.
