The research work outlined in this paper examines the utility of index tests for evaluating the strength of coal, both in the laboratory and in-situ. For routine evaluation of strength and deformation properties of coal seams, as inputs for design in stability analysis and equipment selection, the index tests are cost-effective and also make less demand on time and manpower. Four index tests, namely Protodyakonov Index, Cone Indenter Index, the Point Load Strength Index and Schmidt Rebound Hammer, were evaluated for 13 coal samples and correlated to fundamental strength and deformation properties such as uniaxial compressive strength, Brazilian tensile strength and modulus of elasticity of the same coal stratum. The index tests, barring Point Load Index, showed relatively low percentage scatter compared to the fundamental strength and show marked advantages for routine estimation of coal seam strength.

Management support systems are extremely important to mining management to enable them to operate their company as a business. Management must give attention to the financial, maintenance, materials, and other reporting and control systems that are necessary to successfully operate a mining company. This subsection describes the management support systems that are critical to most mining companies. In this introductory review, the major objectives and functions of these management support systems will be introduced. The following topics will expand on the functions and key concepts as well as other considerations in each of these systems areas. Additionally, this introductory review will touch upon the unique environment that mining companies find themselves in from a management and personnel standpoint and the effect of this environment on management systems. Additionally, specific keys to successful systems installations and acceptance in the mining industry are discussed.

Guided seismic wave propagation was studied in the Lower Freeport (6A) coal seam in the Oak Park No. 7 mine near Cadiz, OH. Three component geophones were implanted in the coal at distances ranging from 72 m to 183 m from the seismic source. Both Love- and Rayleigh-type modes were observed but the Love-type mode produced the best data. Detailed analysis was performed on the best Love data and a Dziewonski map of group velocity vs. frequency was constructed. This map was in excellent agreement with a theoretical dispersion curve calculated for a model of the coal seam. The Love wave group velocity was found to have a minimum value of 510 m/sec at 275 Hz. Only the fundamental mode contributed significantly to the observed signal and it was observed up to the maximum distance available.

Operations research includes the application of systems analysis to mining operations, the acquisition of field data and the creation and verification of computer models of these operations. These activities result in the generation of computerized mine planning tools which have a firm base-in observational facts. The Surface Mining Laboratory of the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET), in Devon, Alberta has been engaged in operations research activities since 1982. The work includes computer simulation of truck/shovel, continuous mining equipment and dragline operations. Other examples include cooperative programs with industry (such as the demonstration and evaluation of an integrated truck management system), the development of a device to measure off-highway truck rolling resistance, and an automated remote data transmission network. The presentation outlines existing and proposed research projects of the Operations Research group.

Since the commercial acceptance of the liquid ion exchange process in the mineral processing industry, it has been predicted that eventually the hydrometallurgist would have a wide selection of commercially available chemical reagents to make separations efficiently and economically of virtually all metals in solution under a wide range of conditions. Several years ago, General Mills began a research and development program to determine if it were possible to develop a reagent to extract a specific metallic ion from solution at a cost that would allow large scale commercial application. A giant step toward reaching this objective was announced in late 1963, when development quantities of LIX®-63 reagent, a highly selective reagent for the extraction of copper, were first offered to industry. The properties of this reagent were de- scribed in a previous paper.1

On Tuesday evening, February 21st, a reception of visiting societies was held in the Windsor Hall. Hon. George Irvine, Q. C., President of the General Mining Association of the Province of Quebec, occupied the chair, and, after welcoming the guests of the occasion in the name of that Association, introduced Mayor Desjardins, who expressed a cordial greeting for the city of Montreal. After appropriate acknowledgements from the President and the Secretary of the Institute, President Birkinbine delivered his presidential address. The first regular session of the Institute was held on Wednesday morning, February 22d, in the Physics Building of McGill University, where all succeeding sessions were also held. The Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET) /Calgary Coal Research Laboratory and the National Research Council in Ottawa established a joint working research group with industry to develop and test various computer models for application in surface coal mining operations in western Canada.The first part of the paper deals with the problems the group experienced during the past two years especially having model specification and requirements defined and understand site management practices.The second part of the paper deals with site specific development of general mine model for TransAlta Utilities' Highvale Mine in Alberta. Described here are the development of an interactive truck/shovel model for their three pit operation, selection and application of dragline model for tandem operation with the extended bench method, criteria for operational model of the five seams operation with selec-tive mining approach.

A series of laboratory experiments were conducted on a variety of bolt types to examine the load transfer capacities of different profiled bolts in short encapsulation push testing. A 75 mm section of 150 mm long bolt specimen was anchored in a 75 mm long stainless steel tube using full resin encapsulation. Six types of different profiled bolts and two non - profiled bolts were tested. Bolts with higher profile were in general found to have greater shearing resistance and higher stiffness than low profile bolts. Widely spaced profiles allowed greater displacement at peak shear strength, and bolts with no profiles produced very link load transfer capability. Rough surfaced plain bolts showed a significant load transfer capability in comparison to a factory supplied smooth surface bolt which supports the belief that rusted bolts have higher lnad transfer capability that un-rusted bolt surfaces.

Tholeiitic metabasalts comprise at least five geochemically distinct mafic volcanic associations of Late Palaeozoic age within the Gympie Province, southeast Queensland. Geochemical features indicate that parental magmas of the various metavolcanic suites were generated in contrasting tectonic regimes, although each of the suites shows some affinities with eruptives from convergent plate margin settings.Basalts from the Highbury Volcanics of the Gympie Group are island arc tholeiites (IAT) formed during an immature stage of eruptive activity in an intra-oceanic arc. They are unique among the analysed metabasites in possessing high Zr/Nb (Zr/Nb - 30) and very high Ba/Nb, and as well as low Ti/V, Ti/Zr and Ti/Y. These features are explicable solely in terms of contributions from a depleted, convecting upper mantle source, and large ion lithophile element (LILE) enriched fluids ascending from subducted oceanic crust.

In underground mining operations, ventilation and water sprays are the common methods of controlling dust. In recent years, there has been a proliferation of technical literature dealing with water sprays for dust control. However, guidelines for the design of an effective water spray system have not been presented to the mining industry. This paper recommends guidelines for water spray systems to control dust in underground mining operations. These guidelines suggest type, number, location, and orientation of nozzles; desirable operating water pressure; and associated filtration system.

(written discussion *).-In this paper, the author has enumerated the various sources of error that may, under certain conditions, develop in instruments of the direct-deflection type, but through a failure to mention possible sources of error in instru-ments of the potentiometer type, he leaves the reader with a wrong im-pression. If he would carry his criticisms further and give a list of the possible sources of error on potentiometer instruments, the paper would be more complete.

Kennecott operates one of the largest and most modern copper refineries in the world at Magna, Utah, USA. The inputs to the refinery are anodes produced at Kennecott Smelter, which has extremely high contents of lead and bismuth. In order to minimize undesired effects in the electrolytic refining process, unwanted impurities, especially bismuth, must be controlled. In our mixture at Musconetcong Iron Works we have an exceedingly hard, dense, magnetic ore, which contains some iron pyrites. The sulphur runs from 0.5 to 1.5 per cent. To prepare this ore better for the furnace, and with a view of making a softer iron, we tried roasting the ore in a Gjers kiln. When it worked well, the improvement in the iron was very perceptible ; but the ore was continually sintering and forming scaffolds across the bosh of the kiln.

Ever since the 8ms criterion was developed in the early 60’s there has been an ongoing debate among many blasters as to its actual value in controlling ground vibration. The perpetuation of the myth surrounding the 8ms window can be partly attributed to its simplicity and convenience as a means for regulatory compliance. Unfortunately, the mindset that many blasters have adopted has hindered the development and use of more effective techniques and in many cases can actually be counter productive to vibration control.

Mining in underground situations requires constant change due to changing ore bodies and economics. The Homestake Mine in its 122 years of existence has gone through numerous changes due to these factors. Recent sustained low prices in gold and ore bodies that are smaller or within mined out areas have forced the mine to reevaluate how these ore blocks will be mined. This paper will describe the design, drilling, and blasting of a complex ore block using the blind raise uphole bulk mining method.

The addition of cement to underground backfill at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited, Broken Hill commenced in 1967. This resulted in a deterioration in metallurgical performance with increased loss of lead and zinc to residues at each concentrator. Investigations to determine the cause of the problem and methods to counteract it have been undertaken. This paper outlines the effects of cement on lead-zinc beneficiation at Broken Hill and presents an interim report on attempts to overcome the metallurgical Deterioration.
