The Golden Valley Volcanic Centre has been recently interpreted as being a combination diatreme breccia pipe and rhyo-dacite flow dome complex of Permo-Carboniferous age that intrudes basement granitoids and sediments of Ordovician-Devonian age. Exceptionally good exposure at the Centre has enabled the relationships between different lithologies to be determined. This, along with petrological studies, has led to a detailed understanding of the geological environment in which the complex formed. Gold, silver and base metal mineralisation have been recently shown to be associated with the Marginal Breccia at the perimeter of the diatreme. Comparisons have been made between the geology and mineralisation in this system and several similar diatremes which also contain gold-base metal sulphide mineralisation.

A performance study of oxygen self-rescuers of varying durations from the United States and other countries was undertaken as an assessment of present worldwide technology. The apparatus were tested on a Breathing and Metabolic Simulator in the Life Support laboratories of the Bureau's Pitts- burgh Research Center. Parameters monitored during the testing were inhaled levels of C02, 02, inhaled gas temperature, and breathing resistance. The metabolic demand placed on the apparatus represented the average demand of the 50th percentile miner performing a 60-min man-test 4, as described in 30 CFR 11H. Results presented include apparatus service life and subjective comments as well as averages and peaks of monitored parameters.

Mount Isa Mines' Hilton Mine was brought into large-scale production in 1990/91 at a time of sharply falling metal prices. To ensure the operation's survival and eventual prosperity there was an urgent need to reduce operating costs and increase revenue. A target of a 40 per cent increase in productivity over five years was set. Strategies to obtain the required improvements were developed on the basis of greater involvement and increased contribution from the workforce, major changes to the mining methods and the development and application of new technology. This paper describes the organisational, operational and technological changes that have been implemented at Hilton and presents the results achieved to-date.

In September, 1930, H. N. Eavenson, then Chairman of the Coal Division, appointed a Committee on Methods of valuing Coal Propelvties, with John B. Dilworth as chairman. The latter prepared a schedule' of features for consideration under the general headings of Undeveloped and Developed Coal Properties. These subjects were divided among the members of the committee and during the next year written discussions of his allotted subjects were received from each member. Mr. Grimes and Mr. Eavenson discussed the entire list,. These discussions were mimeographed and a set sent to each member before the meeting of the Institute in February, 1932. There was a general discussion at that meeting. At the meeting in February, 1934, Mr. Dilworth submitted a report12 which summarized the accumulated opinions and data and presented the conclusions of the committee as a whole on the subjects embraced in it's schedule. Members of the committee expressed the desire that some of the individual opinions be published for reference. Mr. R. "This paper discusses the author’s work on international law norms of consultation with Indigenous communities and examines unexpected corporate stakeholder impacts on these norms. Customary international law, which governs the area, does not traditionally refer to corporate conduct. This paper surveys several sources on developing international law on consultation obligations; it also discusses the impacts these norms can have on corporate stakeholders in the mining industry. Finally, it asks how interactions of corporate stakeholders in this area can indirectly impact future law and suggests implications for different business models in the mining sector.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article traite du travail de l’auteur sur les normes de consultation avec les communautés autochtones contenues dans le droit international et examine les impacts inattendus des parties prenantes sur ces normes. Pulverized coal (PC) and other injectants can be injected into the blowpipes of a blast furnace to decrease coke requirements. Throughout the history of blast-furnace development, there have been many attempts at injecting PC. In the 1960's a more serious effort was made to improve pulverized coal injection (PCI) technology. However, because of the additional capital requirements and the projected near-term inexpensive cost of other injectants, very few PC1 systems were installed. When the second oil crisis occurred around 1979, the shortage and high cost of fuel oil caused blast-furnace operators to operate without oil injection. It was soon discovered that blast- furnace operation without oil was not as smooth or efficient. Experiments with PC1 quickly showed that coal was a good replacement for oil which resulted in the rapid application of PC1 in both Europe and Japan. As a result, PC1 technology for blast-furnace operation has progressed rapidly during the 1980's. This paper will describe the worldwide status of PCI, characteristics of different PC1 systems, the effect of PC1 on blast-furnace process parameters, and the economic effects of using PCI. Results from the USS Blast-Furnace Thermochemical Projection Model comparing the effects of different coal properties and the effects of other tuyere injectants such as oil and natural gas will also be described.

Impermeable geologic faults in the coal seam can cause intermittent production problems or can cause unexpected amounts of water or gas to issue from degasification boreholes. These faults also can impact methane emissions into the mine workings, especially if they hinder proper and effective degasification of the coal bed. They may also act as barriers for methane flow in the coal seam. Although this might seem beneficial for advancing mine workings, faulting may also cause gas pressure buildups and result in compartmentalization of the gassy regions from which large quantities of water and methane may rush into mine workings. This study uses reservoir simulations to illustrate the effects of impermeable faults, with and without throws, on the production performance of vertical and horizontal degasification boreholes. These boreholes were drilled from the surface to intercept the coal layer and fault and were assumed to produce methane two years prior to mining of the coal seam. Longwall advances and face position related emissions and reservoir properties were characterized using sector definitions along the path of the panel grids. This work numerically evaluates water and gas productions of each borehole and presents the effects and the impacts of impermeable faults on methane emissions due to an advancing coal face. The results can be used to understand the effects of impermeable faults on borehole productions and face emissions due to these coal seam anomalies.

THOUGH born in England-on Nov. 23, 1372 William Wraith was brought to this country at the age of ten. Eight years later he entered the University of Illinois, transferring to the Michigan College of Mines where he got his E.M. in 1894. For the next three years he was a mine surveyor for the fuel department of the Santa Fe Railroad. Then he got into the copper-mining industry, which has occupied his attention for the last forty years. First he was engineer, at Butte, for the Boston & Montana company, and then helped to build the Washoe smelter at Anaconda, of which he was assistant superintendent from 1906 to 1913. The Anaconda company then sent him to Salt Lake City as manager of its subsidiary.

Meeting, Apr. 25, 1913.-President Rand recommended the appointment of the Nominating Committee (see p. i), and a Committee on the Use of Electricity in Mines (see p. xliv), which committees were duly approved and appointed. President Rand recommended the establishment of. a Committee on Mining Methods, and requested authority for the President to appoint the members of this Committee, both of which recommendations were approved. The name of the Committee on Economic Geology was, at its own request, changed to the Committee on Mining Geology. The request of the Iron and Steel Committee, that a meeting of the Institute, under the auspices of this Committee, be held in the latter part of October, the place of meeting to be decided later, was granted.

Haematite Recovery from a Tailings Stream Laboratory and pilot scale testing were carried out in 1999 on a tailing sample from a North American iron ore plant using gravity, magnetic and flotation techniques. The ore contained 16 per cent iron mainly in the fine (-38 ¦m) size fraction. Two methods of evaluating the separation efficiency were used; Selectivity Index and Z factor analysis. Tabling and magnetic separation produced poor results, with flotation testing showing some promise, generating concentrates assaying more than 40 per cent Fe. High grade concentrates containing more than 67 per cent Fe were generated using the Kelsey Centrifugal Jig, and it was recommended that this technique be pursued at a larger scale to verify the results obtained.

Magnetic separators are commonly used as an effective and low-cost method to concentrate paramagnetic or ferromagnetic minerals. These versatile separators are often used in multistage circuit configurations to further improve concentrate recovery and/or grade. Although these circuits are generally very efficient, field studies suggest that the layout of multistage circuits can be less than ideal for many industrial operations. To illustrate this shortcoming, a theoretical analysis has been conducted to compare different circuit configurations for magnetic separators. The resulting knowledge base has been used to establish generic engineering guidelines for the layout of multistage circuits. The potential improvements in separation efficiency that may be realized through the application of these guidelines have been demonstrated using a simple case study.

A new process to recover platinum group metals (PGMs) from automotive catalyst scrap using metal vapor was developed. To improve the efficiency of the acid dissolution process of PGMs, metal vapor of reactive elements such as magnesium or calcium were contacted with spent automotive catalyst. It was expected that metal vapor would react with metal selectively and form intermetallic compounds. The specimen of the spent catalyst was treated at 1173 K for 3 h, and it was then dissolved in aqua regia for 1 h to recover PGMs. After the reactive metal treatment, 88% of Pt, 81% of Pd, and 72% of Rh in the catalyst scrap was dissolved, while only 77% of Pt, 69% of Pd, and 38% of Rh was dissolved from untreated scraps.
