ALMOST all the hazards productive of accidents are present in churn drill operation-exposed electrical cables, open machinery, moving parts located overhead, exposure to weather, and movement of heavy machinery-all are part of the job. But, a check list of danger spots and full use of countermeasures will produce maximum safety here, as on any other operation.

The NIOSH Office of Mine Safety and Health has released communication products about flyrock safety in the form of informational brochures, flashcards, and toolbox talk materials. Both the mining and construction industries are targeted with these helpful communication tools. These new products can be used as refresher training for employees and as introductory safety materials for onsite visitors.

A model has been developed for sensitivity analysis of open pit bench blasting. The model simulates the cost effectiveness of various blasting designs in relation to the equipment used for drilling, loading, hauling and primary crushing. The simulations will give an indication of the optimum powder factor giving the lowest over-all costs for drilling, blasting, handling and crushing.

Through the remainder of this century, world consumption of fluorine per ton of primary aluminum produced will continue to be substantially reduced. Growth of the primary industry will offset some of the unit consumption, but demand for new fluorine sources will decline sharply. The Bureau of Mines performed a comparative study of nine sites at eight surface coal mines to determine if the presence of near-surfaced underground abandoned workings resulted in the generation of adverse long-duration, low-frequency blast vibrations. Six of the nine sites had underlying workings, and two had thick layers of low-velocity unconsolidated surface material.

The mining activities on the North Mine leases have, over the years, followed the orebody from the shallower depths at the southern end of the lease as it continued northwards at progressively increasing depths.Commencing from the south end, in the early days small shafts were used to obtain access to the orebody at the moderate depths involved.

Some of toe magnetic properties of minnesotaite (general formula: Fe3(OH)2Si4O10) were examined. Toe paramagnetic susceptibility values at various temperatures were determined from toe slope of toe magnetizing curve. These values were then compared with toe theoretical values estimated using toe Bohr magneton numbers for toe paramagnetic ions contained in toe missesotaite.
