This paper describes a new borehole loading test using a self-boring instrument appropriate for dense sandy soils and stiff clayey soils. The results of loading tests for the bearing strata of deep foundations according to this method are also presented. This method has been applied to the study on the settlement behavior of heavy foundations resting on dense sand, stiff clay or soft rock in Japan.

Computer analyses of single hole signatures are often used to help blasting operators predict the type of ground vibration effects that may be produced from production blasts incorporating various delay intervals. Frequency analyses of single hole waveforms and subsequent multi-hole waveform simulations can allow an operator to determine the best type of delay intervals to use in order to minimize low frequency ground vibrations.

Construction records from six projects which employed full-face TBMs to drive 18 km of tunnel in sedimentary rock have been analyzed. More than twenty individual causes of delay could be identified. Delay causes are characterized on the basis of frequency and duration of incidents. Average utilization and downtime distributions are presented for each project, and frequency distributions of downtime per shift are discussed.

The Minntac Mine drills and blasts approximately 75 million long tons of taconite per year. This requires drilling one million feet of 1 6-inch diameter holes. Surface coal mining can have both negative and positive impacts on raptors. Mitigation strategies and enhancement techniques can be implemented to alleviate negative impacts. The physical chemistry of dissolution of silicate and complex oxide ores in aqueous lixiviants has been reviewed. Particular attention has been paid to the analysis of dissolution mechanisms and kinetic models and to the elucidation of the role of the porous nature of the materials on dissolution behavior. Various types of commercial ion exchange resins were evaluated with respect to their ability to extract gold from cyanide leach solutions. Large differences were found among the various resins in terms of selectivity and gold loading. The hydrophi­licity and the charge density appear to be the main factors that determine the resin characteristics. Polystyrene weak-base resins, such as Dowex MWA-1, exhibited the best all-round performance.
