The US Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu codeposited. Decreasing Cu codeposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.7 A h/150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 msecs. Graphite, lead and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave electrowinning at 70°C (158° F) gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10% to 30%, and a period of 100 msecs to 1000 msecs gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 µg/mL to 0.1 µg/mL. Au concentrations decreased from 54 µg/mL to 0.2 µg/mL and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µg/mL.

Mining machine cabs were built to comfortably fit 90 percent of adult American males, and have controls that allow fast natural reactions during emergencies. These cabs and controls also fit 40 percent of the adult female population in the United States. The operators are also positioned for good visibility and for protection from roofing and ribbing hazards. Two basic designs were developed, one for seam heights on the order of 4 feet I and the second for seam heights near 8 feet. The sitting position of the largest person within the sample size group (termed a "95th percentile man") determined the basic cab shapes. The size of different parts of the human body and how they work together I established other design features of the cab. Areas of visibility, limits of operator movement, comfortable seating angles, etc., were carefully identified for the largest and the smallest persons within the sample size group. Placement of controls was based on these findings. The controls are designed and placed to allow operation with minimum physical strain and fatigue. See chart on other side of sheet.

It has been well accepted that water content significantly changes the physical and mechanical properties of rocks. Experimentation data of Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS), Modulus of Elasticity (E) and Brazilian Tensile Strength (UTS) of sandstone showed that increasing water content from oven dried to saturated condition will decrease their values. Ultrasonic tests carried out together with the UCS tests also indicated that the sonic wave traveled faster as rock specimen became saturated. During triaxial tests, the sonic velocity changed with the applied load. It was found that constitutive behavior of dried rock specimen was dependent on the confining pressure, whereas saturated rock specimen did not seem to be dependent on the confining pressure. Dependency of failure criteria such as Mohr-Coulomb. Bieniawski and Hoek & Brown on the water content was conformed as well. In order to show the influence of water content on the stability of an underground opening, a numerical modeling, based on finite element method, was carried out. The model was run using the mentioned failure criteria.

As a member of an emergency response team, you and your team members are at risk of experiencing what psychologists refer to as a traumatic incident—an incident that may Involve exposure to catastrophic events, severely injured children or adults, dead bodies or body parts, or the loss of colleagues, for instance. Traumatic incidents can produce unusually strong emotional reactions that may interfere with your ability to function at the scene or later: You may experience any of the physical, cognitive, emotional, or behavioral symptoms listed below in Table 1. Some people experience emotional aftershocks weeks or months after they have passed through a traumatic event. Others may experience these reactions while still at the scene, where they must stay clearly focused on constantly changing hazards to maintain their own safety and to rescue injured victims.

This paper discusses different possibilities to enhance coarse particle flotation using forth manipulation and improved flotation cell design. Experiments were carried out in laboratory, pilot and industrial scale ranging from 0.0015 to 100 m3/axle. During the work it could be shown that the conventional idea of one single flotation cell type for both fine, immediate and coarse flotation of coarse and fine particles need different impeller tip speeds and a different froth control objective for effective operation. For optimal operation for coarse feeds the tip speed must be reduced and the froth vertical velocity must be increased to compensate the respective drainage velocity and also the water film thickness must be taken care of. Turbulent eddies below the froth interface should be suppressed. The paper discusses the effects of different froth manipulation variables like froth vertical velocity and froth residence time to the recovery and selectivity. A function has been developed, between the residence time of the froth and the flotation cell's ability to produce an improved concentrate grade as a function of different operating and froth manipulation variables.

There were present eleven Directors, the Secretary and Assistant Secretary of the Institute, and eleven guests. The Secretary, Bradley Stoughton, was appointed the representative of the Institute on the Board of. Directors of the American Bureau of Welding. A communication from a member of the Institute regarding simplified spelling was laid on the table. The following appropriations were made for the year. 1919: $250 to the Institute of Metals Division, $250 to the St. Louis Section, $100 to the Columbia Section. An invitation was received from the Western Society of Engineers to the Institute to use the facilities of that society during the A. I. M. E. Meeting in Chicago. The Bulletin of the Institute was presented to the French Congress of Engineers. There were elected twenty-eight members, eighteen associates, and three junior associates. The status of one member was changed from junior associate to associate. Four members were reinstated. An extension of time was granted to one member for payment of dues. The dues of four members on active military duty were suspended. Dues were remitted of four members who have been paying over thirty years, and who are each over seventy years of age.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an experimental method to evaluate the relative effectiveness of water additives on the extinguishment of coal fires. The experiments were conducted in the fire zone of the multiple entry section of the Bruceton Experimental Mine. Chambers filled with one hundred and eighty kilograms of Pittsburgh seam coal were ignited and allowed to burn until well developed fires were achieved. Extinguishing agent-water solutions were then applied to the fires and the quantity required to extinguish the fires compared to the amount of water alone required to extinguish similar fires. A 20% diammonium phosphate-water solution required an average of 22 L to extinguish the coal fires, while two commercially available additive-water solutions required an average of 30.6 and 30.3 L, respectively. The average amount of water required to extinguish the fires was 28 L. An analysis of covariance, using the thermal energy of the coalbed, Q, to quantify the fire at the time of extinguishment, showed that the diammonium phosphate-water solution was slightly more effective at extinguishing these coal fires than water alone, while the two commercially available additive-water solutions were statistically equivalent to water alone.

The production of radioactive and reactive metals, such as plutonium, uses various pyrometallurgical techniques that generate significant quantities of waste salts contaminated with hazardous, reactive or radioactive materials. Health concerns, environmental regulations and economic considerations require proper mitigation processes to recover the valuable components and for recycling or unrestricted release of these salts. The Oxygen Sparging Process converts soluble metal halides, such as chromium-, plutonium-, cerium chlorides, into insoluble oxides and/or oxychlorides which can be consolidated and separated for long-term storage or further processing. The matrix salt phase, viz. calcium and/or alkali chlorides, are clean after oxygen sparging and fit for recycling. This method has been described and its optimized parameters discussed to show that RCRA regulated elements, such as, chromium, lead, cadmium, etc. report to the consolidated phase making the salt recyclable. Salt Scrub Reduction Process for the recovery of radioactive and RCRA metals from the waste salts has been developed. The process uses a Ca-Ga intermetallic alloy which recovers over 98 percent of the reactive metals. The matrix salt phase in this process, viz. calcium or alkali metal chlorides, are clean after salt scrub reduction.

The discovery of a thin pay streak, yielding carbonates of copper; native silver, and perhaps chloride of silver, was made on the 9th of April, 1874, within the trachytic belt which forms part of the Sierra Mojada. The discoverer named it the Humboldt Mine. On the 2d of May, 1874, another discovery was made, in a northwest direction from the Humboldt, at about five hundred feet distant, this was named the Pocahontas Mine. After some exploration these two discoveries were proven to be on the same vein. To the southeast of the Humboldt a claim had already been taken up, called the Virginia; and to the northwest of the Pocahontas, one called the Southeast Leviathan. On these' last two this same vein has been found and worked. This paper will therefore treat of the Humboldt-Pocahontas vein, as worked on these four claims, to wit: beginning at the northwest, the Southeast Leviathan, the Pocahontas, the Humboldt, and the Virginia claims. Over the last year at Clarabelle Mill, three circuit reconfigurations were implemented. One circuit reconfiguration, æA CleaningÆ, was initiated due to a furnace failure at the smelter complex, and two of the circuit reconfigurations, æincreased copper (Cu) separationÆ and the æInterim IsaMillÖ circuitÆ, were seen as opportunities to increase cash flow through the mill. A Cleaning and the Interim IsaMillÖ circuit took advantage of engineering design already completed for a major capital project. The engineering for each was modified, as needed, and construction of the required portions of the capital project was fast tracked. The increased Cu separation circuit change used existing test and plant equipment to increase the plant Cu concentrate production. Implementation of the projects required teams that included operations, maintenance, technical support, project management and capital project resources. This paper discusses the business reasons driving the changes and the forethought or synergies with other work, which made them a success, and what was learned through each project. Physical mine modeling and computer simulation techniques were used to conduct technical feasibility and economic analyses of selected pit configurations for surface mining a single coal seam dipping at about 15% to a maximum depth of 46 m (150 ft). Pit orientations along the true dip (dipline), along the strike (strikeline), and along an apparent dip were studied. Physical models of each pit configuration were prepared first to delineate potential operational problem areas and also to furnish data for the computer simulation models. A dragline microsimulation, a shovel/truck simulation, and a surface mine cost analysis models were used to conduct the study. Sensitivity analyses were conducted on variables such as the pit width, block length, and seam pitch. The productivity (m3/h) of the mining equipment (dragline or stripping shovel) under each set of conditions was used to optimize the pit configuration. Both block length and panel width were found to significantly affect the dragline productivity. Larger size trucks were preferable to smaller size trucks in the pit con¬figuration along an apparent dip. The cost analysis results showed that the pit configuration along the seam dip was more economical than the pit along the strike or along an apparent dip for the mining condition studied.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated anhydrous chlorination and caustic-acid leaching processes to recover Ni, Co, Mo, and W from waste hydroprocessing catalysts. In batch laboratory-scale equipment, the chlorination process extracted 61 to 99 pet of the metals. Final recovery was 65 to 99 pct. The caustic-acid leaching process extracted 81 to 98 pct of the metals. Final recovery was 36 to 99 pct. Chlorination processing included roasting, chlorination, hydrolysis of metal chlorides for recovering Mo or W, water leaching of Ni or Co from the spent charge, purification, and solvent extraction or precipitation of Ni or Co from the purified solutions. Caustic-acid leach processing included NaOH leaching, solvent extraction of Mo or W from the NaOH leach liquor, H2S04 leaching of the NaOH leach residue, purification, and solvent extraction or precipitation of Ni or Co from the purified solution. The estimated fixed capital cost for a commercial-scale plant processing 39,000 Ibid of waste Ni-Mo-AI catalyst was $8 million for the chlorination process and $9.6 million for the caustic-acid leaching process. The estimated operating cost was about $0.20 and $0.40 per pound of the waste catalyst, respectively, for the two processes.

The scope of work for the fast track construction of the Weeks Island Replacement Facility, Weeks Island, Louisiana included the design and construction of two salt mines. Mine #1 - An interim underground mining level consisting of a 975 m (3200 ft) incline and 3520 m of 5.5 m x 7.3 m (11560 ft of 18 ft x 24 ft) drill and blast excavation; raise boring; core drilling; roadheader excavation; complete bulk material handling facilities utilizing an existing production shaft. Mine #2 - Simultaneous with the interim mine construction a new one million ton per year underground salt mine was constructed consisting of: two 5.5 m diameter x 381 m (18 ft diameter x 1250 ft) deep shafts; 76450 cu m (100,000 cu yd) of drill and blast bottom excavation; surface and undergound bulk material handling systems (conveyors, skip loaders, shaft equipment, hoisting); ground freezing for water control for both the production and service shafts; the design of the first underground doublewall slipform installation of a dynamic bitumen shaft lining system; the emergency grouting of both the existing production shaft and the interim mining level in the salt dome; 227 mt x 64 m (250 ton x 210 ft) high structural steel production headframe; 2.2 MW (3000 hp) double drum mine hoist; service shaft headframe; and service buildings.
