The management of solid waste is known to be a large and increasing problem in high-population areas throughout the world. It is not necessary here to add further definition to the nature and magnitude of the problem. Instead, it is the purpose of this paper to describe a new process, called the Andco-Torrax System, which will be of use in converting municipal solid waste into useful energy forms and a granulated slag by-product. The paper includes a description of the first commercial plant for the process.

I will talk today about a porphyry copper exploration program now underway in the Amazon jungle in the southeastern part of Ecuador near the border with Peru. The project is unusual for two reasons: first the deposits are of Jurassic age, 153 m.y.o., which is unusually old for porphyry copper deposits and they may be the most significant pre-Tertiary age porphyry deposits known. Second, the district was found only six years ago which makes this the most recent discovery of a totally new porphyry copper district. The new porphyry district, known as the Zamora River Copper Belt, or the Corriente Copper Belt, is a north trending area 50 km long by 10-15 km wide, which is nearly aligned with the axis of the Jurassic age Zamora batholith and with the course of the Zamora river. Gencor in 1994 initiated a regional grassroots gold exploration program based on reconnaissance geologic mapping and geochem sampling which did not find a gold mine, but which identified the San Carlos porphyry copper system in April, 1995. In a later reorganization between Gencore and Billiton the Ecuador project was transferred to Billiton and between the Gencore work and Billiton’s a total of 10 porphyry copper systems were found over the next four years. In the period of 1997 - 1999 Billiton drilled a total of 11,000 meters of wide spaced core holes in the San Carlos, Panantza and Kutukus prospects. In October 1999 Billiton concluded a farm-out, joint venture agreement with Corriente Resources and Lowell Mineral Exploration for additional exploration of the Zamora property. This is funded by Corriente and managed by Lowell Mineral Exploration and a total of 28,000 m of core drilling was completed through August 2001. An immediate result of the Corriente Lowell project was the discovery of potentially commercial ore reserves in two new deposits at Mirador and Warintza. Additional closer spaced drilling was done in the Panantza deposit and additional drilling is planned at San Carlos, in targets related to Warintza, and elsewhere.

To recover tetrahedrite-tennantite series minerals from porphyry copper-pyrite ores by the froth flotation method, further research on thiol collectors is launched to promote the utilization efficiency of copper ores. In the present paper the adsorption mechanism of the collectors on tennantite surface has been investigated by computational modeling and FTIR-spectroscopic analysis, which have revealed that the decrease in prognosis of collector activity evaluation (PCAE) for tennantite is in the following order: BX (-0.34318), AEROPHINE 3418A (- 0.61756), AERO 5100 (-14.18857). The lower PCAE the stronger the ability of the collector to interact with the mineral surface of tennantite and form the stable complex. More kinetic reliable conditions to form suitable adsorption layer and rupture of the liquid interlayer with AERO 5100 have been observed by FTIR spectra due to decrease of the intensity and stretching and bending vibrations of water (less than 20 and 65%, respectively). In order to verify the feasibility of AERO 5100 as a collector the industrial flotation tests have been conducted. Flotation performance has improved significantly with the stadially grinding and preflotation of tennantite in intercycle copper flotation that allows to avoid desliming of the fragile mineral and minimize loss of Cu and As in tailings. The recovery of copper in copper concentrate increases by 3.9% with the grade maintained.

This paper is intended to call attention to the manifold uses of limestone in industry; to indicate the types of limestone desired by some of the large consuming industries; and to give some information on the resources of limestone in Canada, so that an idea may be obtained of the present and future possibilities for limestone production. The word limestone is used in the usual broad sense to include both high-calcium limestone and the highly magnesian variety known as dolomite, as well as all intermediate types. Lime is simply calcined limestone, and in this general paper its uses have been included with those of raw limestone. It is of interest, in dealing with this subject, to glance back over the early history of the utilization of limestone, for by so doing we see that limestone has been of importance to mankind since the beginning of civilization and has contributed in no small measure to the development of a number of the arts and sciences. One of the first uses, if not the first use, of limestone was in connection with the making of lime for plastering purposes. This use antedates civilization. In the day of the ancient Greeks and Romans, the art of plastering had been brought to a state of perfection that is not nearly approached by the modern artisan.

TWO days of solid discussion, with barely time out for meals, characterized the Tulsa meeting of the Petroleum Division. It was preeminently an earnest gathering devoted to technical matters. Sessions were held in the Crystal room of the Mayo Hotel with luncheon served each day in the back of the same room so that talk of methods, while slightly less formal, extended right through the lunch hour. Thursday evening the Committee did provide a little relaxation in an informal dinner at the Tulsa Club where, after a brief musical program and an amusing skit by the local Herman the Great, brief addresses in non-technical vein were made by President Farish and Vice-president Rice of the Humble Company, Henry L. Doherty of Cities Service, Secretary. Bain of the Institute, and others. The presence of leading executives of a number of the oil companies at the dinner and the sessions, and the cordial approval they expressed of the work of the Division were especially gratifying. The total registration was 215 with 100 at the dinner and 70-to 80 lunching together each day.

Before listing the laboratories and the work performed there, it is proper to make clear what is done and what is not done by Federal bureaus, States, and Territories, as well as by Canada and Mexico. FEDERAL Bureau of Mines. - The Bureau of Mines does not make assays, analyses, or tests for individuals or firms unless they be incidental to investiga¬tions that are of possible benefit to the entire mineral industry. All significant results obtained in this way are made public through published reports. Any mineral sample sent to this Bureau for simple identification will be subjected to a cursory examination.

Incident investigation is of utmost importance in most high-risk industries. This study was undertaken to study the content of past investigation reports to determine the effectiveness of the incident investigations. The study uses a semi-quantitative method to assess the effectiveness of incident investigations in the Ghanaian mining industry by evaluating the quality of past investigation reports. The assessment tool consists of 5 elements with several indicators and rating scales for assessing the quality of an investigation report as a measure of the effectiveness of the investigation. The method was applied to 304 investigation reports of 3 Ghanaian large-scale gold mines, and the results correlated with incidence rates of the mines to determine if any relationship existed. The results showed that the mines differ significantly in the quality of their investigation reports, suggesting differences in the effectiveness of their investigations. In addition, the incidence rates of the mines negatively correlated with some elements of the assessment tool. In general, the method was found useful and revealed areas where improvement is needed. INTRODUCTION The importance of learning from incidents is well documented in the literature. For instance, some scholars regard learning from incidents as important for improving safety [1,2]. Thus, many organisations spend considerable resources in identifying lessons from incidents and subsequently on the process of improvement that follows the identification of lessons. It is therefore important for such organisations to determine the effectiveness of their learning from incidents processes, in order to identify specific areas where improvements are needed, so that interventions can be as specific as possible. The learning from incidents process models the plan-act-check-do approach of management systems, often consisting of four major stages, namely; data collection and incident analysis, planning interventions, implementing interventions and follow-ups and evaluation [3,2]. The investigating and analysis of incidents have been regarded as one of the vital stages of the learning process since it is the stage where lessons are identified [3,2,4]. It has also been noted elsewhere in the literature that results of the previous stage of the learning process are important for the next stage [3]. For example, ineffective incident analyses could result in the planning of ineffective remedial measures. One of the primary aims of incident investigations is to identify lessons from previous incidents which when implemented can prevent future recurrences or minimise the effects of future incidents. There is thus the need for organisations to assess the quality of their investigations periodically since it is one of the means they adopt to improve safety and the quality of remedial measures to some extent depends on the effectiveness of the investigations. Although previous studies [5,2] have assessed the effectiveness of the learning process, and some aspects of the learning process, such as incidents reporting, there is less focus on the effectiveness of incident investigations. The research described in this paper was therefore conducted to contribute to this gap, focusing more closely on incident investigation reports.

Improving the mineral industry's tarnished image describes in a nut- shell the reason why the Speakers Bureau of the Tucson Subsection of the AIME was formed. Let's go back in time about 3 years to the fall of 1971. Literally thousands of bills detrimental to the mineral industry were being introduced into Congress and State Legislatures. Unfortunately, many were being passed and signed into law. Clean air and water, zero pollution, preserve the environment, ecology, biodegradeable, wilderness were the words that the self- styled ecologists and environmentalists were preaching. The mineral industry either sat mute or in place of acting, reacted in a way certain to attract a maximum amount of bad publicity with a minimum amount of rhetoric. A mining company president, for example, commenting on the primary air standards in Arizona was reported by the press as having said, "we'll shut all the smelters down and put thousands of Arizonans out of work if we have to meet the Arizona standards." Or another defending a poorly planned highly visible open pit nonmetallics operation, "we'll take the whole mountain down if we want to, and nobody can stop us" and still another manager of Operations, "the bottom line is all that counts, to hell with all of this environmental nonsense."

Research was done by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effect of a low-molecular-weight polymer on wet grinding of quartz, dolomite, and a copper ore. A 5-in ball mill equipped with a torque sensor for precise measurement of input energy was used for batch grinding tests. Grinding parameters were determined from size distribution data on the feed material and ground product. Zeta potential measurements were made to determine the effect of the polymer on the surface properties of the three materials, and a viscometer was used to measure the effect of the polymer on slurry viscosity. The addition of the polymer caused a sharp increase in the negative value of the zeta potential for all three materials, indicating that pronounced adsorption was taking place. At a constant slurry percent solids, addition of the polymer caused a similar reduction in slurry viscosity for each material. For quartz, dolomite, and the copper ore, grinding efficiency, as measured by kilogram of product per kilowatt hour passing a given screen size, was not affected by the addition of the polymer. However, the lowering in slurry viscosity caused by addi-tion of the polymer permits grinding at a higher slurry percent solids.

Shales and clays from Illinois were sampled, tested, and evaluated to determine feasibility of producing lightweight aggregate by rotary-kiln methods. Sampling procedures and the 1 ,,,y of the Pennsylvanian shale units are discussed. Chemical, X-ray spectrographic and X-ray petrographic analyses were run on the samples to determine if a correlation existed between chemical mineralogic composition and expansion. Preliminary expansion testing was conducted in a muffle furnace. Rotary-kiln tests were conducted in a 16- inch by 14-foot rotary kiln. The weight of the aggregate ranged from 27 to 59 pounds per cubic foot. Concrete cubes employing the aggregate were tested to determine the qualities of the concrete. Compressive strength of the concrete using the 7-bag of cement cement per cubic yard mix, after autoclave curing for 6 hours, ranged from 2,950 to 6,750 psi. No correlation was found between the chemical, X-ray spectrographic, and X-ray and petrographic analyses and expansion, Sixteen samples made suitable lightweight aggregates in the laboratory rotary kiln. The expansion temperature range of eight of the samples was extremely narrow, and difficulties would probably be encountered in processing these materials commercially.

A new process of recycling valuable metals containing in the slag of jamesonite smelting in the blast furnace was studied. In this process, the valuable metals such as Pb, Sb, Zn and In etc. were fumed and volatilized and enriched in the dust firstly and then the dust was leached by sulfuric acid. In the leaching procedure, Zn and In in the dust entered into the leaching solution and were separated from Pb and Sb which remained in the residue.The optimal operation conditions of the fuming procedure are as follows: the mass ratio of the blast furnace slag, coal powder and lime are 100:22:10 respectively and the fuming time are 1.5~2.5 h, the fuming temperature is not below 1200C and the volatilization rates of Pb, Sb, Zn and In are 95%, 92%, 86% and 75% respectively. The optimal conditions for the leaching procedure are also presented: the consumption of sulfuric acid is 1.15 times of the theoretical consumption, the ratio of liquid to solid is 4:1 and the leaching temperature, leaching -1time and stirring speed are 90, 1.5h and 300 r?min separately. The leaching rates of Zn and In are 98.5% and 95.2% respectively. The experimental results shows that the valuable metals in the dust can be recovered and separated effectively by this process and the?ir recovery efficiencies are as follows: Pb94%,Sb91%, Zn84% and In69%.

"The formation, distribution and survival of pure Al nuclei under surface pulsed magneto oscillation (SPMO) treatment were investigated with thecombination of experiments and numerical simulation. The results indicated that the nuclei originated from the whole top surface of melt owing to the oscillation of top surface induced by SPMO. The temperature field significantly affected the survival of the nuclei The electromagnetic force and flow field of the melt with SPMO treatment were simulated by finite element software ANSYS. The electromagnetic force mainly distributed below the top surface near the mould wall. The electromagnetic farce not only made the melt oscillate but also increased the convection of meh below the top surface vigorously. The oscillation near the top surface of the melt promoted the nucleation largely, and the convection increased the uniform of the temperature distribution in the whole meh which favored the survival of nucleiIntroductionAs we all know, fine equiaxed grains are beneficial fur the improvement of the mechanical property, process ability and the uniformity of metallic materials [1-2]. With the researches of recent decades, people discovered that the electromagnetic field is an efficient method to refine the solidified structure of metals [3-7]. Pulsed magnetic field technology obtains more and more attentions in recent years due to its smaller power consumption, bigger instantaneous magnetic field intensity, non-contacting with the meh and simple convenient equipment manufacturing [8-9]. However, the melts would splash fiercely when pulsed magnetic field is applied with a slightly higher power. Thus, based on the understanding of the solidification refinement mechanism of electric current pulse (ECP) [10], Gong et al [11] developed a novel technology called pulse magneto-oscillation (PMO) to refine the solidification structure. The technology can be easily applied in the solidification structure refinement of continuous casting slab. But fur aluminum continuous casting, the sump is very shallow, which greatly limits the application of pulse magneto-oscillation technology."

Rock stress measurements have been carried out by the Mining Department, the Norw. Institute of Technology (NTH) since 1964. Before that time rock stress measurements were carried out at a few locations by the Swedish professor Hast as early as 1958. From the very beginning the NTH engagement in the rock stress measuring field has been very practically aimed, and we have all the time enjoyed a very good cooperation with the Norwegian mining industry. At a very early stage the industry realized that proper measurements with proper equipment could be a very valuable practical tool. Hence the industry also was willing to grant considerable funds for the education of experts and development of measuring techniques. Since 1964 measurements have been carried out in the great majority of Norwegian mines. During the last years a large number of measurements have also been carried out in connection with hydro-electric power plants, road tunnels etc.

Geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) have been used widely as an alternative for compacted clay liners and covers in mine waste applications. The high swelling of bentonite particles in the GCL creates a uniform barrier layer that results in low permeability of water and mine waste leachate. GCLs must provide sufficient internal and interface shear strength stability, especially if GCLs are used in steep slopes under high normal loads. Peel strength is a common parameter that is typically correlated to internal shear strength properties of GCLs. The relationship between internal shear strength and peel strength of GCL at normal stresses of 287, 575, 862, and 1724 kPa is evaluated in this study. The data in this study was compared with the peel strength-internal shear strength relationships found in literature. The study concludes that the relationship between peel strength and internal shear strength is unique based on manufacturing, needle-punching density and the method with and without heat treatment of the geotextile end fiber bundles.

"Explosive gas mixtures are characterized by their ability to undergo a self-accelerating reaction that may culminate in ignition. In the case of methane and air there are two interdependent causes of this acceleration. First, if a sufficiently fast reaction is induced, heat may be evolved faster than it is lost to the surroundings; consequently, the temperature rises and the reaction rate increases. Second, the reaction rate is determined not only by temperature but by the concentration of reactive intermediate products if the latter increases during the course of the reaction the rate will increase. To understand the role of these active intermediates, it should be realized that molecules of methane and oxygen, per se, show little tendency to react with each other even at high temperatures.(1) If, however, free radicals like OH and CH3, are present in the mixture, the methane and oxygen are attacked in the reactions(2):In these reactions the radicals are regenerated, and thus a chain of reactions is set up by an individual radical or chain carrier which is broken only if the latter is destroyed in some process. Not all collisions of a chain carrier with CH4 or 02 result in reaction, since one requirement for a successful collision is that the colliding particles have a certain minimum energy. The percentage of collisions in which this energy condition is fulfilled increases with temperature, so that for equal chain-breaking probabilities the length of the reaction chain increases with increasing temperature. Thus, there exists an interplay of temperature and concentration of chain carriers that determines the reaction rate. To carry the rate to the stage of self-acceleration, higher temperatures are required for lower than for higher chain-carrier concentrations, other conditions being equal."

High current-low voltage EB-gun evaporation in an oil-free ultra-high vacuum system was found to be necessary, though not sufficient, for stability (300°C, 106 v per on) of aluminium gate MOSFET's and MOS capacitors not stabilized by a phosphorous glaze. five characteristics of the equipment used: 1) Vacuum purification of the aluminum charge, 2) Ionization of the evaporant by the electron beam, 3) X-ray formation, 4) Residual gases during evaporation, and 5) Metal film structure were studied as Possibly significant in MOS fabrication. EVAPORATION of contact metals common to the semiconductor industry historically has been accomplished with oil diffusion pump systems and various resistance heated evaporant sources as dictated by the type of metal evaporated. To meet a need for greater reliability of semiconductor devices, other metallization methods were developed. A good example would be application of the moly-gold contact system to integrated circuits with deposition by RF or triode sputtering.' More recently, fabrication of stable metal-oxide-silicon devices and circuits has put new demands on metallization. The purity of the thin metal films composing MOS structures is critical, particularly at the metal-oxide interface, and ultra-high vacuum metallization using sputter-ion pumping and electron beam gun (EB-gun) evaporation are well suited for the task. At this laboratory aluminum has been the most common contact-gate metal for both MOS capacitors and MOSFET's. In the earliest work with MOS capacitors, aluminum was evaporated from wetted tungsten filaments using both diffusion pump and ion pump vacuum systems. In spite of clean oxide techniques these capacitors were unstable under bias-tempera-ture stressing. Only after a switch to EB evaporation of aluminum were stable capacitors produced. Using the same techniques it was possible to make MOSFET's with equivalent stability. Stability data for a discrete MOSFET is shown in Fig. 1. This is a "clean" oxide gate (no phosphorus stabilization or no etch back of a thicker gate) having a thickness of lOOO? thermally grown on the (111) plane. Gate length after diffusion was 0.24 mils, and the devices were hermetically sealed. Stressing conditions were 300°C and 106 v per cm applied alternately as a positive and negative field for 10 min, 50 min, and 4 hr for a total stress time of 10 hr. An initial shift in turn-on voltage of 0.1 v was detected for 10 min of positive bias. All evidence at this laboratory indicated that while EB-gun evaporation of ultra-high purity aluminum was not sufficient for 300°C stability, it did seem to be necessary. There may well then be something inherent in the EB-gun deposition used which enhanced stability, and probably no single factor existed but rather a series of factors. It is the purpose of this paper to report on some of the investigations carried out to learn more about EB-gun evaporation in ultra-high vacuum systems. EXPERIMENTAL DESCRIPTION The EB-gun was self accelerated, had a maximum power rating of 10 kw, and used a water-cooled copper crucible able to hold a 20-g aluminum charge. The electron beam was bent 180 deg and focused by an electromagnet which also provided movement of the beam across the crucible. Normal power conditions in this work were 9 kv and 300 to 600 mamp. The gun can be described as high-cur rent/low-voltage and was quite different in its mechanism of operation from EB-guns with much higher acceleration potentials. An oil-free vacuum system capable of 5 x 10- l0torr, a quartz crystal rate and thickness monitor and a quadruple mass spectrometer completed the evaporation system, Fig. 2. A typical evaporation cycle consisted of a 3 to 4 hr pumpdown to the upper l0-9 range and evaporation at l0? per sec with the pressure in the bell jar not rising above 1 x 10"7 torr. Thickness control was 5 pct or less and could be automatically monitored and controlled. Five phenomena associated with the EB evaporation and considered as possible contributors to Ma performance included a purification effect, ionization of evaporating aluminum, X-rays, constitution of vacuum ambient during evaporation, and film structure dependence upon evaporation rate. These phenomena are now discussed. Vacuum Purification. The design of the EB-gun permitted purification of the aluminum charge by vacuum outgassing. Particular features included an efficiently water-cooled copper hearth with a capacity of over 20 g of aluminum and the capability for sweeping the beam across the charge. Such capacity meant that aluminum had to be added only after about every fifth evaporation. A new charge was not required each evaporation as is necessary with filament evaporation. An oxide "scum" which appeared on the charge could be completely cleared from the top hemisphere of the charge by sweeping with the beam prior to opening the shutter. An indication of the purifying effect was obtained by a series of analytical measurements on incoming aluminum, after melting but with little vacuum out-gassing, after 30 min outgassing, and the evaporated film itself. Recovery and separation of molybdenum and rhenium from a process solution was accomplished by a technique developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines involving a combined solvent extraction and activated carbon adsorption procedure. The processing sequence required treatment of the solution with S02 to reduce the chlorate ion and adjust the pR prior to solvent extraction of molybdenum and rhenium with a tertiary amine. Molybdenum and rhenium were stripped from the organic phase with an NH40H solution, and the strip solution was then passed through activated carbon to preferentially adsorb the rhenium. After washing entrained molybdenum from the column with a brine solution, rhenium was eluted with an MeOH-H20 mixture. The activated carbon was regenerated with water. Molybdenum was recovered as (NH4)6Mo7024 by evaporating the column effluent. Rhenium in the column eluate was reextracted with a tertiary amine, stripped from the organic phase with dilute NH40H, and recovered as NH4Re04 by evaporating the strip solution. The final (NR4)Re04 product contained < 80 ppm impurities. Sodium sulfate was crystallized from the first solvent-extraction raffinate by lowering the solution temperature to 0° C. Precious metals contained in the original process solution were adsorbed onto the activated carbon.

RME has a vision for a new mill operational paradigm made possible by RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System. This vision can be moved forward into reality at any time with or without guidance from recent development in measurement and predictive modelling tools.Some new liner designs can degrade SAG mill performance because of mill volume loss, ball strike (rotational speed limitations) and other issues often brought about by optimising liners for life and without a backward glance at metallurgical consequences. Freshly relined mills can initially produce as little as 80 per cent of their maximum throughput, that maximum occurring toward the end of the linersÆ wear life. RMEÆs proposition is to design new liners for maximum commercial performance. This may mean more frequent changes of liners but with liners designed to yield optimum grinding, metallurgical and profitability performance. In other words, mill liner profiles and mill relining speed become key operational controls and not simply æmust doÆ maintenance functions. Taken to the extreme, liner profiles may prove capable of ætuningÆ a grinding plant for maximum profitability in any metal price environment. This paper provides an update regarding RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System technologies and outlines RMEÆs vision of a æliner profile versus profitabilityÆ model as a function of metal price, developed intuitively or by using a combination of new measurement and modelling technologies. These new measurement and modelling tools provide the opportunity to predict the optimum commercial outcome, off-line in the virtual world, before committing to an expensive liner experiment.

Carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (18CNMR) spectra of nine 2-substituted pyridines, seven 3 -substituted pyridines, and nine 4-substituted pyridines have been obtained and analyzed. Substituents included both electron-releasing groups and electron-with hawing groups. Substituent effects on the magnetic shieldings of the ring carbons, except for those in the 2-positions of 2-substituted pyridines, were found to be quite similar to the effects reported for the monosubstituted benzenes, Thus, at least to a first approximation, the two classes of compounds have similar shielding mechanisms. Shieldings of the carbon atoms in the 5-positions of 2-substituted pyridines and those in the 6-positions of 3-substituted pyridines were found to reflect electron release or withdrawal by substituent groups, The pyridinium cation and the compounds 2,2&apos;-dipyridyl and benzonitrile were also investigated.

Finite element models were generated of two submerged arc furnaces of different geometries. A 48MW circular furnace and a 68MW 6-in-line rectangular furnace were studied. The electrodes, raw material, slag and molten metal were included in the model. ANSYS/Multiphysics was used to predict the current density distribution in the electrodes, raw material, slag and molten metal as a result of the three phase AC current. The effect of the electrode immersion on the current path was studied. The ?proximity effect? caused a pronounced asymmetry in the electrode currents in the circular furnace, whilst the electrode currents in the rectangular furnace exhibited radial symmetry. The current distribution in the melt in both furnaces indicated that the bulk of the current flows between phases. The current density is greatest between electrodes. Results were compared to qualitatively similar published work, operating experience and results of furnace dig-outs.
