Customarily, peak particle velocity of surface wave vibrations has been the recommended criterion for the prediction of blast damage to structures. Currently blast spectrum and natural frequencies of a structure have been also recognized as important for predicting damage potential. While others have considered the importance of structural frequencies, they have not analyzed the structural response spectrum when establishing damage criteria.

O’Okiep Copper Co. Ltd.’s 45-kt/month (49,600-stpm) concentrator at the Spektakel mine in South Africa is comprised largely of reconditioned equipment from the old O’Okiep mill, which operated from 1940-1975. When combined with modern approaches to layout, crushing, classification, and flotation, a simple-to-operate plant was constructed at a cost of only $3.2 million.

When we consider that the purpose of blasting is to fragment rock or ore so it can be subsequently handled and processed, we can see that the cost of blasting, in reality, affects all downstream steps of the mining (and in some cases) production processes. A series of experiments were carried out with Hallimond tube in order to test the effects of different reagents. A good result has been obtained when potassium-n-butyl xanthate is used as collector for molybdenite and graphite complex are depressed by the depressor mixed with nigrosine and iron (III) chloride. Benches in surface mines often contain known areas of ore and known areas of waste, which must be mined selectively. When rock is blasted it not only fragments but is also physically, and non-uniformly, moved. Risks therefore exist of ore being lost if treated as waste and of mill feed being diluted by waste. Both possibilities carry serious fmancial implications.

It has been recently argued that rock strength has little effect on the final results of pre-split blasting and is of only minor importance when blasting rock in general. However, it can be shown that the maximum borehole separation for optimal perimeter blasting results with constant borehole and loading configuration is strongly dependent on the tensile strength of the rock.

Willowstick has successfully employed a new Seismic Acoustic Resonance (SAR) method to improve seepage characterization through, beneath, and around dams. SAR is a passive seismic method that detects zones of higher permeability in the foundation and fill materials of a dam. Just as the ocean has tides, the earth’s crust experiences daily “Earth Tides” and is constantly in motion. Continual motion produces resonance signals that can be measured, interpreted, and modeled to identify zones of higher permeability within a dam and its foundation. The SAR results are analyzed in conjunction with the traditional Willowstick Method to better characterize seepage flow paths and patterns trough, beneath, or around a dam in three dimensions. When both methodologies, which use entirely different scientific principles, identify the same anomalous feature, a higher degree of confidence is gained in the results of the investigation. Willowstick has effectively utilized the SAR method on many successful dam seepage investigations. The two geophysical techniques when used in parallel have yielded complimentary results, with both methods providing beneficial information about seepage locations. This paper will detail seepage flow paths identified using both Willowstick and SAR methods for two case study tailings dams in Canada and the United States.

ILMENITE, rutile, zircon, and other heavy minerals are found in small amounts in the sand that covers most of Florida. Small enriched deposits occur on the beaches and coastal dunes. One beach deposit east of Jacksonville was worked during World War I and another near Vero Beach during World War 11. Both ceased operation when the resumption of imports reduced prices.
