"Planning for coal beneficiation in the electric utility industry is relatively complex, involving the coordination of experts and specialists in a broad range of fields, as well as compliance with a wide variety of government regulations.This paper examines the role of the planner, reviews possible benefits of coal beneficiation, identifies potential problems and illustrates a typical planning schedule.The steps involved in the planning process are:Step I-Bench- and pilot- washability studyStep 2- Wash plant designStep 3- Power plant and boiler designStep 4-Mine designStep 5-Major environmental and technical problems to address.IntroductionElectrical utilities and coal have a long and intimate relationship . Cleaned coal is becoming an increasingly popular fuel with the utilities for a variety of reasons. Generally, the greatest impetus to burn a cleaned or prepared coal fuel comes from the need to control airborne pollutants.Long-range planning is a standard practice for electric utilities, forecasts of demand must be made well into the future. Since the lead time required to provide new facilities is often as long as 10 years and the cost very high , planning becomes an important task.For a utility that owns and directs the operation of its coal mines, the mine planning or fuel acquisition planning takes on the magnitude of other corporate planning functions. It is from this perspective that a utility would view coal preparation. Except for the interaction of a coal-fi red plant on the actual mine design the planning considerations o f a beneficiating facility for a captive mine or a contract raw coal supply are about the same. Because TransAlta Utilities is currently supplied from captive mines, this discussion will tend to focus in that direction.It is the role of a planner to plan. This is easy to say but it is not always easy to do. Often we are working within a context that resembles the geological time scale. Frequently the objectives are not clearly defined when we begin and ultimately our plans are tested in the waters of government regulations and cost benefit analyses .Planning for beneficiation of Plains coal, or any coal, provides just such a test. The planner's role in this endeavour requires a wide vision. While parts of the process may be amenable to classical methods of project scheduling, the broad range of subjects and interaction of seemingly unrelated tasks is sure to obscure some of the considerations that must be made. Therefore, the planner's chief role is coordinating the work of many experts and specialists toward the final objective.Among the specialists are combustion , geo technical, mining, civil , and mineral processing engineers , geologists, hydrogeologists, soil, and reclamation experts to list a few.When one considers coal beneficiation, the planning part o f that consideration is probably more complex than any other single engineering function. Due to the company's location in the Alberta Plains and the proximity o f the mine to the thermal generating station, this paper will tend to emphasize that situation.Beneficiation may offer some advantages over run-of-mine coal to the power plant opeator. Some of these advantages are: removal of a contaminant, power plant efficiency gains , lower plant capital costs (for new plants), possible lower mining costs."

The general shape of the 1450°C isotherm of the Ti-TiO-ZrO2-Zr region was evaluated from the surrounding binary phase diagrams and from thermo-dynamic data on the metal-oxygen binaries. The phase boundaries were accurately determined using X-ray and metallographic techniques. At 1450°C the system shows a large bcc ß field, which extends from the two metal-oxygen binary systems as a Gaussian error function, and is stable up to 30 at. pct 0 when Ti and Zr are present in equal amounts. At higher O Concentrations, the ß field is in equilibrium with t-ZrO . The following four regions, with three solid phases, are present: two a ß t-ZrO,, a TW t-ZrO,, and TiO t-ZrO2 c-ZrO2. On cooling the ß phase transforms into the a phase, going through the w transition phase. The isotherm at 1500°C for the region TiO-TiO,-ZrO, was obtained by using X-ray diffraction. At 1500°C a large c-ZrOz region is present as well as a large two-phase field, Ti0 c-ZrO,. The following regions, with three solid phases in equilibrium, were found These regions are relatively small. The solidus and liquidus relationships were determined by observing samples suspended in a tungsten crucible by means of a fine tungsten wire and heated in vacuum. Eleven univariant points were found. C-ZrO, decomposes through a peritectic reaction into liquid t-ZrO2. The activities of Ti and TiO in the TiO t-ZrOz and in the two a ß t-ZrO regions were measured using the Knudsen effusion method. In the a TiO t-ZrO, region the activities of Ti and Ti are the same, as in the a — Ti TiO binary. In the two a t-ZrO, regions, the Ti activity is high and the Ti0 activity very low, although all phases present contain at least 30 at. pct 0. This indicates a short-range order in the solid phases, Zr atoms being preferentially surrounded by 0. 1 HE system Ti-Zr-0 is of interest because of the wide ranges of solid solubility exhibited by the boundary systems; as titanium and zirconium both belong to the same group of the periodic table, large single-phase regions should occur within the system, with a great variation of properties (as the composition changes within the single-phase region). Furthermore, the possibility of modifying ZrO, to make it a more usable refractory by the addition of other metals makes this system also of interest. Because of the high affinity of titanium and zirconium for oxygen, the oxygen partial pressure is very low at all compositions; thus, there exists a ternary metal-metal-oxygen system in which the oxygen pressure is not an important variable, so long as it is low enough. When a sample is heated in vacuum to a temperature high enough for vaporization to occur, the vapor phase will consist of metal and metal-oxide gas, the oxygen concentration being very low. The strengthening effects of hydroxide and synthetic plastic films in the creep of cadmium crystals were studied. The results were broadly consistent with the naive mechanical model. The dislocation-film reactions and the significance of the macroscopic stresses associated with certain films are discussed in the paper. ALTHOUGH a number of studies have been made of the strengthening of metal single crystals produced by surface films usually less than Ir in thickness, the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are still not well established. Roscoe' first noted the critical shear stress and the stress-strain curve of cadmium-crystal wires to be raised markedly by the presence of oxide films. Subsequent investigators2-' have confirmed the effect for several metals and films including a number of plated poly-crystalline metal films. Harper and Cottrel1" with a thin film on zinc presumed to have formed as a result of etching and washing treatments) did not detect a strengthening at a rate of extension of 10 ' sec-' although at lo-' sec-' the film raised the flow stress by 7 pct at 0.0005 extension and by 22 pct at 0.01. The marked strengthening at moderate strains thus appeared to be the result of a dynamical effect dependent on the rate and amount of plastic flow. Other observations'. " are consistent with this view. The large effects of films on the tensile creep rate of single crystals were demonstrated when the observation of Andrade and Randall," that the creep rate of cadmium crystals increased on immersion in aaueous solutions of certain cadmium salts. was shown' * to hold only when a film was present initially and was explained by the attack of the solution on the film and the removal of its strengthening effect. Changes in the creep rate interpretable in terms of the removal or formation of various films have been observed by other investigators.3,8,10,31 Certain other experiments have been reported in which surface films or liquid environments have affected the plastic behavior of metals, but these are not within the scope of the present work which deals with the effect of solid films on single-crystal slip. Possible Mechanisms—The film does not significantly reduce the load on the crystal in the elastic range (the elastic moduli of film and crystal are not too greatly different and the area of the film is so small that its share of the load is negligible) so that the initial operation of internal Frank-Read sources is not affected. However, as Fisher" has pointed out, a source terminating on the crystal surface requires only half the critical stress for activation as an internal source of the same length and a relatively strong film (even a very thin one) would pin the free ends of the surface sources so that, if surface sources are responsible for plastic flow in a clean crystal. such a film would increase by roughly a factor of 2 the stress necessary for generation of dislocation loops at a given rate. The other general possibility is that the film resists the passage to the crystal surface of internally generated dislocations. If the film is adherent and if the specimen is to exhibit slip of the same general character as a film-free specimen, the film must deform or fail in shear at the active slip planes. A general relalionship between the amount of glide shear (due to slip) and the macroscopic shape change has been developed. Since the deformation can be large, finite strain analysis is employed. In this treatnzent, the shape change is expressed by a deforlnation gradient matrix, F - [axi/aXj/ where X and x refer lo the initial and final positions of a particle. This matrix is readily evaluated in termas of the amounl of glide shear, a , and the direction cosines of the slip-plane normal and the slip direction for a single active slip systena. In the case of deforma tion from slip on several systems, the product F(a) of the several deformation gradient matrices is first calculated. Then, by assuming that the final configuration is reached by a long series of small shears of magnitude a, occurring more or less alternately in the several slip sys- IN problems of crystal plasticity, it is often necessary to relate the amount of glide in the operating slip systems to the macroscopic strain components. This relationship is relatively simple when only small strains are considered. In this case the separate strain contributions from several slip systems are additive. Such a procedure is incorrect in the case of large plastic deformation. To the authors' knowledge, no general treatment of the latter problem has appeared in the literature. In specific instances, Mark, Polanyi, and schmid3 have derived the relationship between glide and axial elongation during tensile pulling of a single crystal when only one slip system is active. A similar relationship for duplex slip was worked out by v. Göler and Sachs.4 Taylor and Elam1 have also studied in detail problems of large plastic deformation. Due to uncertainties as to the slip systems at the time, ! terns, the final deformation gradient matrix can be obtained. Mathematically, the problem is reduced to finding the limit of F(aN as N — m while a — 0 in such a way that the Product Na = a finite conslant designatzng the accumulated amount of shear. It turns out that this limit is simply eafF1, where F, is the matrix whose elements are the coefficients of a in the F(a) twatrzx. Application is made of the present treatment to a fcc crystal of Permalloy compressed on the (110) plane and contrained to elongate in the [112] directzon. In addition, it is shown that one rnay readily obtain from the general analyszs the well-known formulas relating elongation, amount of glide shear, and amount of lattice rotation for crystals deforming by single and double slip under tension. however, they were mainly concerned with proving that slip occurs on {111}(110) systems in fcc metals. The present general treatment arose out of recent investigations of magnetic anisotropy in cold-worked Fe-Ni alloys6 as well as some related problems in strength anisotropy of single crystals.' Detailed application of the general analysis will be provided in the case of a Permalloy single crystal compressed on the (110) plane and constrained to elongate only in the [112] direction. It will be seen that, as expected, the small strain approximation leads to significant errors after moderate straining. It will also be shown that the present general treatment yields the formulas of Mark et al. and of v. Goler and Sachs in those specific cases. The term "clay" is somewhat ambiguous un¬less specifically defined, because it is used in three ways: (1) as a diverse group of fine-¬grained minerals, (2) as a rock term, and (3) as a particle-size term. Actually, most persons using the term "clay" realize that it has several meanings, and in most instances they define it. As a rock term, clay is difficult to define be¬cause of the wide variety of materials that com¬pose it; therefore, the definition must be gen¬eral. Clay is a natural earthy, fine-grained ma¬terial composed largely of a group of crystalline minerals known as the clay minerals. These minerals are hydrous silicates composed mainly of silica, alumina, and water. Several of these minerals also contain appreciable quantities of iron, alkalies, and alkaline earths. Many defini¬tions state that a clay is plastic when wet. Most clay materials do have this property, but some clays are not plastic; for example, halloysite and flint clay. As a particle-size term, clay is used for the category that includes the smallest particles. The maximum-size particles in the clay-size grade are defined differently on various grade scales, Soil investigators and mineralogists gen¬erally use 2 micrometers as the maximum size, whereas the widely used scale by Wentworth (1922) defines clay as material finer than ap¬proximately 4 micrometers. Some authorities find it convenient to use the term "clay" for any fine-grained, natural, earthy, argillaceous material (Grim, 1968). When used this way, the term includes clay, shale, or ar¬gillite, and some argillaceous soils. Even though no standard definition of the term clay is accepted by geologists, agronomists, engineers, and others, the term is generally un¬derstood by those who use it. Clay is an abun¬dant natural raw material, and it has an amaz¬ing variety of uses and properties which will be discussed in this chapter. Clays rank among the leading industrial min¬erals in both tonnages produced and total value. Their importance is indicated in Table 1, which lists the 1970, 1971, and 1972 production and values according to the U.S. Bureau of Mines (Ampian, 1972). Adequate reliable statistical data on which to summarize world production of clay are un¬available; this paragraph outlines the world re¬quirements for clay only in a very general way. According to one estimate, the world bentonite production in 1972 was 3.5 million tons (Anon., 1973a), but in the authors' opinion it was prob¬ably at least 5 million tons. The total fuller's earth produced was at least 1.5 million tons and may have been as much as 2 million tons. The total world kaolin production in 1972 was more than 10 million tons. Approximately 7 million tons of this total was produced in only two regions-the Georgia-South Carolina kaolin belt in the United States and the Cornwall re¬gion, United Kingdom. The world's 1972 out¬put of ball clay, which is also produced pri¬marily in the United States and the United Kingdom, was approximately 1.5 million tons or perhaps a little more. The total world fire clay production in 1972 was probably about one and one-half to two times and the miscellaneous clay production three times the United States production. As industrial minerals, clays are a complex group that consists of several mineral commodi¬ties, each having somewhat different mineral¬ogy, geologic occurrence, technology, and uses. Mining under bodies of water such as oceans, lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, and other impoundments, is not a new technique. However, in the United States it has been fairly restricted to date. In order to recover the maximum amount of the nation's reserves, in the future, it is important that further mining under such bodies of water be planned. However, it is imperative that this is not done at the expense of danger to the nation's miners or appreciable property damage. If all the bodies of water are considered large, and it is assumed that these constitute a hazard when mining in their vicinity irrespective of their size and geometry, a significant percentage of the coal reserves are likely to be sterilized. How- ever, by adopting special mining plans and procedures, it may be possible to release reserves for exploitation that would otherwise be unmineable since the surface of bodies of water below which they lie are relatively small in size. In 1977, the Bureau of Mines issued Information Circular (IC) 8741, entitled "Results of Research to Develop Guidelines for Mining Near Surface and Underground Bodies of Water". This document was based on the work done by Skelly and Loy (under Contract No. H0252083) and K. Wardell and Partners (under Contract No. H0252021). How ever, these guidelines have limited application, because these did not (1) define the bodies of water of concern, and (2) take into account the nature of the strata being encountered. These guidelines assumed that all bodies of water which would be undermined were large. For the purposes of this discussion, water bodies may be divided into three categories, depending upon their potential to cause damage to the underlying mining activity: ? catastrophic ? major ? limited Bodies of water which pose the threat of catastrophic destruction in the mine, should there be an inrush, include oceans, large lakes, big inland reservoirs, and rivers that could flood the mine complete- ly in a short period. Those with major potential for damage would include lakes and streams which might present a danger to both life and property if not considered in the mining plans. Finite bodies of water which have a volume considerably smaller than the mine volume offer a limited potential for damage in the case of an inrush. These include flowing streams which have a relatively small rate of replenishment and which can be dealt with by pumping or isolation in the event of a breakthrough into the mine. Such bodies of water may be inconvenient and cause a temporary disruption of production, and could even cause some damage to equipment, but only in rare instances would personal injuries occur. The scope of this paper is limited to the exploitation of stratified mineral deposits with overlying -face bodies of water. Vein and dessiminate ore deposits are not discussed, nor are breakthroughs into adjacent mines in the same horizon. Overlying, water-logged strata also pose a serious threat to mining, but are not treated in this discussion. Pending further investigation these strata may be considered as bodies of water with catastrophic potential for damage, with the base of the strata being considered the bottom of the water body. When the body of water is large, so that it may cause catastrophic damage to the mine in the event of an inrush, the guidelines suggested in IC 8741 are applicable. In order to develop criteria and procedures for mining under smaller bodies of water, however, it is necessary that the nature of the strata disturbance due to underground mining be examined.

The total world bentonite production in 1980 was 6,625,204 st of which the United States produced 4,184,619 st. The total fuller's earth produced in the world in 1980 was 1,952,600 st of which 1,534,000 st was produced in the United States. The total world kaolin production in 1980 was estimated at 22,971,000 st. Approximately 13 million tons of this total was produced in two countries, the United States and the United Kingdom. World production data on ball clay, fire clay, and miscellaneous clays are not available. As industrial minerals, clays are a complex group that consists of several mineral commodities, each having somewhat different mineralogy, geologic occurrence, technology, and uses. In this chapter these commodities are organized as follows: (1) bentonite and fuller's earth; (2) kaolin, ball clay, halloysite, and refractory clays; and (3) miscellaneous clay and shale. Bentonite and fuller's earth are grouped together because they are closely interrelated. Tuns truly remarkable machine was built on a preliminary scale in May, 1895. The first full-sized table was built by Mr. A. R. Wilfley, and was used in his own mill in Kokomo in May, 1896. The first table sold for installation was placed' in the Puzzle mill, Breckinridge county, in August, 1896. The mill enthusiasts at first hailed it as the cure for all the ills that flesh is heir to in the milling line. A little later it was found to make losses which were serious, and on this account the table succeeded only to a limited extent in displacing the vanners of the gold-mills. Still later, mill-men in a number of districts throughout the country made special studies of the faults of the machine, and devised a number of ways of grouping supplementary machines to overcome as far as possible the losses, and at the same time retain the benefit of the extraordinarily large capacity accompanied by the production of clean concentrates for which the machine has become so justly famous. I hope to make an exhibit of some of these methods in an appendix to my book on ore-dressing which is now in preparation. These experimenters have not written up the subject, and if they possess all the facts they have not given them out for the benefit of the mining profession at large. The object of this paper is to obtain the facts and to pre¬sent them so clearly that their bearing can be seen by all. To this end two complete series-'of tests have been planned. One (the present paper), to study concentration of galena in presence of quartz; the other (to follow shortly), to study concentration of chalcopyrite in presence of quartz. A Discussion of the paper by Mr. James P. Roe which was read at the Washington meeting, May, 1905. MR. C. EDWARD STAFFORD, Chester, Pa.:-During all my business life, I have been engaged in the manufacture of Bessemer and open-hearth steels, but, during my long connection with the Shoenberger Steel Co. of Pittsburg, I had some experience in the manufacture of high-grade puddled iron for horse-shoes and in the making by Dr. Otto Wuth's process extremely pure low phosphorus puddled blooms (analyzing from 0.005 to 0.01 per cent. of phosphorus and sulphur), which were melted with low-phosphorus pig-iron in acid open-hearth furnaces to make extra locomotive fire-box steel. I have also seen the Dank's puddlers in operation at different times and places, notably where they were most successful, at the Otis Steel Works, Cleveland, Ohio; then under the management of our friend, Mr. S. T. Wellman. These Dank's blooms were made solely for open-hearth melting-stock to which they were well adapted ; the unavoidable presence of bits of ore-fix imbedded in the mass of the, metal always prevents the profitable manufacture of merchant iron from Dank's blooms. With the experience just described, I was to some degree in position to value fairly the means, methods and results of Mr. Roe's mechanical puddling from the metallurgical or technical and economic points of view, when given an opportunity by Mr. Roe to see his puddling furnace or machine in operation in Pottstown, Pa. Briefly, the furnace, with water-cooled bottom, is rectangular in plan, about 20 by 8 ft. in the clear, suspended by trunnions at the middle of the long sides, at a. height of 17 or 18 ft. above the general level; the oscillation (65° each way from the vertical) is accomplished by geared segments (attached to the downward-projecting side or trunnion-plates) with which engage pinions driven by a reversing engine. Six years ago, I addressed the annual meeting of the American Society for Testing Materials on "Fuels of Today and Tomorrow."3/ Since then, our country has been drawn into another great war of veritably global extent, with unprecedented demands on fuels, foods, and materials in general. My purpose in this address is to review the changes in fuel supply and demand since 1937 and to give you my views on the outlook for the future. CONDITIONS IN. 1237 Daring 1936 the United States produced and consumed one-third of the world production of coal, two-thirds of the petroleum, and about 95 percent of the natural gas. Two-thirds of the oil produced in all countries since the discovery well was drilled in 1859 had come from American wells. With the exception of the three depression years 1931, 1932, and 1933, new oil reserves were being discovered since 1924 well in excess of our increasing rate of consumption. Discoveries of natural gas, likewise, were tremendous in volume, and this fuel was being transported to most parts of the country by pipe lines; some of them more than 1,000 miles long. We had all kinds of mineral fuels in abundance and at prices that did not stint anyone in the maximum utilization of the mechanical devices that were being developed on every hand. No one suspected that the time might come in a few years when, gasoline would be doled out to some of us at the rate of 1-1/2 gallons a week or that many of our fuel-oil furnaces would have to be converted to burn coal. Of course, these restrictions are due to unusual war conditions, such as lack of coastwise tanker transportation, unprecedented demand for aviation gasoline, and the shortage of rubber for automotive tires. However, these shortages do call our attention to the vital part of petroleum reserves in our country's future position among nations. Therefore, it is of special interest to review briefly the relations of recent supply and demand with respect to our various mineral fuels.

Four taconite plants were studied to establish the extent of hazard to plant personnel which exists based on long-term exposure to noise. The criteria for evaluation include the 90 dBA and 85 dBA summations of partial exposures. Data from extensive interviews were used to determine all work stations or locations which employees occupied and how much time they spent in ach location in a typical working day. Noise level measurements at every designated location were then made. By means of a computer program, these time and noise level data were us d to find the optimum noise reductions which would be required throughout each plant to meet both noise criteria. Subsequently, each plant was examined in detail so that the apparent sources of noise for each of the locations requiring noise reduction could be delineated. In tabular form, this report presents the hazardous locations for each plant, the existing noise level, the optimum noise reduction which would be required to meet the current and proposed laws, and the sources of noise which produce the existing noise level.

A sulfate reducing bacteria strain (named SRB-A) is isolated from sanitary wastewater by using anaerobic technology of Hungate. The studies of physiological, biochemical and phylogenic of the isolated strain are carried out. The colonies of the strain are circle. Cells that are slightly curve, rod-shaped with the size of 1.0~3.0µm in length and 0.8~1.0µm in width. The optimum temperature for growth of the organism is 30~35°C. The optimum pH for growth is 7.0~7.2. Strain SRB-A can use sodium lactate, sodium citrate, sodium acetate, ethanol and acetone as electronic acceptor but can not use glycerol, glucose, sucrose and sodium oxatate. The isolated strain reduces sulfate, sulfide, sulfur, DSMO and FeCl3, then nitrate and nitrite can not be used. The strain has higher tolerance of NaCl, and the optimum growth occurs in the presence of 5%~8% (w/v) NaCl. The result of 16S rDNA sequence analysis indicates that the isolated strain SRB-A is the most similar to Desulfo-vibrio halophilus, and the level of the similarity was 98.4%. The isolated strain has a stronger ability to reduce sulfate, and the level of sulfate reduction reaches about 90% at pH 7 in the liquid medium. 0.6 to 0.8 is the optimum COD/SO42- in the medium for the isolated strain to show better ability to reduce sulfate. At pH 2.5 the level of removal of Cu2+ reaches 96.3%. Under the condition of pH 3.5, the level of removal of Zn2+ reaches 92.6%. When the value of pH reaches about 7, the Fe3+ is precipitated by the formation of Fe(OH)3, and Fe3+ is removed up to 89.4% at last.

With increase of cover depth, dynamic incidents, such as large gateroad convergences and coal bursts, are frequently encountered when mining deep longwall panels. It would be more adverse due to large inclination of the coal bed. Because of the shearer and armored face conveyor (AFC) sliding downhill, toppling of shields, disconnection of AFC to the stage loader are related to it. Tangshan coal mine is a typical deep, inclined coal mine situated in the east of China. The split-level longwall panel layout is being adopted for mitigating problems above, where tailgate entries of longwall panels are driven below gob edge and along the floor, while headgate entries are driven along the roof. Wire mesh and steel sets have been used empirically for support for tailgates for about a decade, which reduces the tunneling speed. In view of this fact, the paper serves to investigate the proper adjustment of the tailgate locations and to analyze the resulting stress and yield conditions according to support strategy. First, field measurements and observations were carried out. Stress data distributed within surrounding rock mass were obtained, especially within the roof since the roof consists of only a coal sheet with a thickness of 2–4 m. Roof pressure of the tailgate represents the pressure at the gob edge since it is below the gob edge. The convergence data were also collected. Numerical modelling using FLAC3D™ was conducted and validated by side abutment stress data. The double-yield constitutive model was used to simulate the gob. The finalized tailgate layout and design were determined through comparison of three scenarios. The research in this paper can help engineers choose the proper tailgate layout and support strategies for coal mines that are going to adopt a split-level longwall panel layout for mining deep, inclined longwall panels.

"In port and harbor facilities, jetties and cargo berth terminals are usually installed on piles that remain partially embedded in soil, while a part of it behaves as columns supporting top deck. Technology in vogue adapts a pseudo static analysis in computer where the top deck including piles are analyzed as an integrated system based on finite element method when the piles are modeled as beam elements, while the soil in which it is embedded is modeled as linear or nonlinear springs. Typical berthing force of the ship is considered as a pseudo static force where the dynamic characteristics of the force is taken into consideration by an equivalent impact factor and little study exists on the actual behavior of these type of piles under the transient shock due to berthing impact. Present paper proposes an analytical solution based on which one can compute the dynamic response of such jetty piles considering shear modulus of soil constant with depth. Considering the solution is analytical in nature no special software is needed and can well be adapted fordesign office practice using generic utility software like MATHCAD, MATLAB etc. that makes theproposed model computationally very efficient.INTRODUCTIONResponse of piles under dynamic load has been an important study in the realms of civil engineering, where significant research has been carried out on its dynamic behavior under harmonic loads like one experienced in a machine foundation or under seismic force.A number of researchers have given solution to this problem like Parmelee et al (1964), Tajimi (1966), Penzien (1970), Novak et al (1974, 1983), Banerjee and Sen (1987), Dobry and Gazetas (1988),Chowdhury and Dasgupta (2008).However, most of these theories are based on piles loaded under harmonic load and valid for long piles where structural failure precedes the soil failure considering the piles are long and flexible."

One of the many difficult problems that confront the present day coal-mine operator is the safeguarding of his employees and property from disasters such as fires, explosions, squeezes, and inundations. Those operators having gaseous or ev en dusty mines have a double responsibility resting upon them in this respect. The introduction of electrical machinery and appera tus in mining operations has been very rapid, and at the present time it is difficult to mention any kind of mining work in which electrical machinery is not used. This extended introduc- tion of electrical equipment has added not a little to the mine operators' safety problem, and it is the desire of the United States Bureau of Mines to aid the mine operator, and the inspection departments having jurisdiction, in solving their electrical safety problems. With this idea in mind, the Bureau has prepared and published schedules setting forth the qualities it considers essential to the safety of various classes of mining equipment, and the conditions under which it will test and give the stamp of its approval to satisfactory designs. Portable electric lamps of the permissible* type are almost universally used in gaseous mines, but the use of permissible electrical machinery has not been so widespread. Until recently the Bureau had issued approvals for only one class. of machinery involving the use of electric motors that is, permissible coal- cutting machines. However, the day is undoubtedly not far distant when the operator, who so desires, will be able to obtain a permissible room hoist, pump, or coal- loading outfit. During the year 1921 the first of a growing list of storage-battery locomotive approvals was granted by the Bureau, and it is with considerable satis- faction that the Bureau how announces the approval of a third class of motor equip- "merit- namely, slectric drills.

This paper explores the capacity effects of a square steel plate welded at the ground surface on a driven open-ended steel pile (i.e. the plate would touch the ground surface after the pile achieves the required penetration). A series of strain-controlled, 1-g laboratory tests were undertaken on piles with and without a square steel plate attached. The piles were driven in dry, loosely packed, uniform sand. Two plates were used, one with a breadth equal to two times the diameter of the pile (2D) and the other with a breadth equal to three times the diameter of the piles (3D). A 20% increase in capacity was recorded for the 2D plate, and a 110% increase in capacity was recorded for the 3D plate when compared to the pile without an attached steel plate. The back-analysis of the results allowed the derivation of a new expression to calculate the capacity of bearing plates, which accounted for the effects of sands compaction and dilation. By extrapolating the findings of these tests to a hypothetical scenario, a model design problem was described where the length of a pile can be reduced by 20% to 60% (depending on the load) by using a plate attached to the pile. The results of this study can help designers to minimise penetration depth; thus, achieving a more economical and sustainable design.

13.1-SUBSIDENCE AND GROUND MOVEMENT ROBERT STEFANKO 13.1.1-SUBSIDENCE AND FAILURE This treatment of subsidence and ground movement will be confined to subsidence control for limiting surface damage by assessing the significant parameters affecting ground movements during mining to optimize mining techniques. The material will be equally applicable to evaporite mining as well as coal but will not deal with block caving or similar systems where failure is deliberately induced and surface protection is not necessary or provided. When an underground opening is established, the original equilibrium is disturbed with resultant stress concentrations. While many factors are involved in opening stability, the span (W) undoubtedly is one of the most important factors in failure. Assuming it is relatively small, the overlying rock strata can bridge across the opening and little if any movement or convergence of top and bottom will occur. However, as the span increases, a point is reached where the stress in the overlying rock strata exceeds some strength value of the rock, and the top breaks. If the opening span is limited to some subcritical value (-We) and/or is at great depth (D), a pseudo-arch will form, achielring stability before rupture occurs to the surface. The boundary of this arch is thought to approximate an ellipse in form with the major axis vertical and equal to four times W, although there has been little field research to substantiate this theory. However, if the width of this opening is increased at this horizon to some critical value (W,) or the same span is created in a shallower seam, the overlying strata ill progressively rupture to the surface and the characteristic subsidence trough is formed (Fig. 13-1) The area of the surface affected is much greater than the area of the seam extracted, depending on the "angle of draw" (a), which is the angle between a vertical line from the edge of the opening and another line extended to a point at which subsidence tails out to zero. This angle has been found to be about 35° in Europe but is rather academic, being a function of instrument precision in detecting subsidence. Since the subsidence effect is so small at any point beyond n 25° angle, this latter may be considered the practical limit of subsidence. Further- more, indications are that the angle of draw varies with depth and nature of the strata.' In a field study over a 1,000-ft-deep potash mine in New Mexico, the maximum angle of draw was found to be 51.5°.2 So far, only a single opening has been considered. However, the width of the excavation applies to any complex mining system of entries, rooms and longwalls as long as the seam has been fully extracted and the width represents the distance from one solid rib to another. It will be noted that the amount of vertical displacement varies from point to point on the surface (s), but the maximum subsidence for a given trough occurs at the center (S). This latter value may not he equal to the maximum possible subsidence (Sm) which occurs only if a critical or super- critical (+W,) width has been exceeded (Fig. 13-1). Substantial surface damage can result when subsidence occurs. Factors affecting the amount and type of ground movement are: thickness and properties of the seam, angle of draw, width of excavation, depth and type of overburden, inclinations of strata and surface, and the amount of support left in the gob. "Different methods aiming at specific energy calculation and design of AG/SAG circuits are used in mining. They include JK DWT/SMC test, SAGDesign test and CWi/RWi/BWi tests. The simplest methods with no secret equations and giving energy required for grinding in kWh/t were proposed by F.?. Bond and J.H. Starkey. D.J. Barratt proposed to use results of CWi/RWi/BWi tests for AG/SAG mill sizing. The present paper gives an alternative for forecast of specific AG/SAG energy. The principle is similar to the theory proposed earlier and consists in cumulative AG/SAG energy calculation using indices of rod and ball grinding (RWi+BWi) without impact crushing index (CWi). Then total energy is divided between two grinding stages using special formulas based on extensive statistical information. The forecast indices of AG/SAG and ball grinding are similar to the SAGDesign testing results. Hereinafter the predicted indices are used for mill sizing of the whole grinding circuit. The method considered in the paper enables prediction of AG/SAG energy based on the test results according to Bond method. The proposed method version was not widely published earlier. The aim of the work was to elaborate cost-effective, reliable and accessible way to determine specific AG/SAG energy. At this stage of method development, it is recommended to use it only for works at preliminary Geometallurgy stage (Scoping, Pre-Feasibility). At design stage the obtained data should be confirmed by appropriate testing using alternative JK DWT/SMC and SAGDesign methods.INTRODUCTIONAppropriate crushing and grinding testing is required to design efficient comminution circuits. It is obviously important to obtain accurate information about ore hardness properties since the main energy consumption at the plant is associated with comminution processes. Moreover, it is required to apply the processes that make it possible to minimize operating costs and efficiently use capacity of the installed equipment installed.When studying ore hardness properties, it is required to take into account that breakage of the material is performed using different equipment. That is why accurate selection of the equipment and the circuit calculation without relevant testworks is impossible. Ideally, the testworks should provide answers to the following questions: determination of ore hardness properties, determination of specific energy consumption for comminution as well as obtaining of sufficient amount of statistically significant results from the tests. The results from crushability and grindability testworks in the first place provide assessment of ore hardness properties and in addition correlate with throughput of the respective equipment. The data obtained can be used for modeling of comminution circuits at the stage of the technology development"

The first printed book on metallurgy to have been published in Europe is considered to be De la Pirotechnia, written in Italian by Vannoccio Biringuccio, and published in Venice in 1540. Together with De Re Metallica, written by Georgius Agricola and published in Latin in 1556, this can be considered to mark the start of scientific and technical literature in this field. Scientific publishing of journal papers has been in existence for 350 years, since the world's oldest and longest-running scientific journal, the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, was first published in London in 1665.The nature of scientific societies has changed significantly since the early days when regular meetings were held to discuss science and conduct experiments, and the reading of scientific papers took place, and publication of papers was undertaken to record the proceedings of meetings, often including rather robust debate. In today’s world, there is a plethora of publications, and it is close to impossible for anyone to keep up with the vast flow of information. International conferences with hundreds of presentations have taken the place of the local meetings that used to discuss a single paper or experiment. In this frenetic environment, it is essential that researchers are able to trust the material they read.The system of peer review is used to maintain standards and to improve the quality of papers. This vital system is, however, significantly flawed. There is little incentive for reviewers to invest sufficient time in picking up all errors in publications, and any ineptitude on their part is usually protected by anonymity. It has reached the point where some reviewers have mistakenly permitted the publication of hoax papers deliberately presented with a complicated scientific facade. In light of such astounding inadequacies, perhaps a more open review process would be an improvement. Electronic publishing allows errata to be linked to the original papers.There is an increasing trend towards open access for papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings, which helps to reach as wide an audience as possible. This also supports the statement in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which says ‘everyone has the right freely to … share in scientific advancement and its benefits’."
