This report covers the final results of a two-phase contract study conducted between July 1974 and October 1976. A comprehensive summary of the initial phase of the study is included. Phase I of the study involved the investigation and evaluation of all potential candidate underground systems for mining the deeper deposits of oil shale and associated minerals in the Piceance Creek basin of northwestern Colorado. Phase II called for the refinement and the detailed technical and economic analysis of the most promising system or systems, thus disclosed. Of the several systems initially investigated and evaluated, four Showed considerable merit for exploiting the deeper deposits: (1) chamber and pillar mining with spent shale backfill, (2) sublevel stoping with spent shale backfill, (3) sublevel stoping with full subsidence, and (4) block caving mining using LHD's. Final refinement and analysis of these four systems indicated their technical feasibility over at least part of the range of conditions expected in the deeper deposits. Their economic feasibility also was indicated under certain operating and market conditions. A variety of engineering, production, and cost information is provided on each of these systems.

Although cobalt is known and used for its hardness and wear resistance, ductile cobalt can be obtained by electrolysis in chloride solutions, under the following conditions : pH : 1.5 - 2, Co++ : 30 - 60 g/l, current density : 100 - 500 A/m2, temperature 40 - 70°C. No explanation was found for the ductility of the deposit under these conditions. Indeed the ductile P (FCC) cobalt and the hydrogen contents in the cobalt deposits are nearly the same as those obtained in a sulfate media, which gives brittle depo¬sits under equivalent electrolysis conditions. Malleable cobalt sheets can be easily obtained under the proposed conditions which could lead to new applications for cobalt.

Suppliers, in an attempt to assist the producers, must consider new technologies for equipment. In the past several years, the induction melting and heating industry has made great strides in developing new and innovative equipment, while improving existing technology. This paper will review recent developments to include improved refractory systems for ceramic pots, new channel-type inductors which are more efficient, new power control systems for existing channel-type pots, and innovative use of multi-purpose lines. Additionally, new heating applications such as galvannealing, edge heating, and post heating will be reviewed. Advanced math models for controlling heat will be discussed. Producers can easily meet the demands of their customers because of the flexibility provided by the equipment reviewed.

The La Colorada underground mine in Zacatecas, Mexico is a mechanised cut-and-fill silver mine with a capacity of 1250 t/d. The project focused on training the mine’s experienced operators for a fleet of underground trucks, through the use of a training simulator. The project was run by the simulator vendor, in collaboration with the mine’s maintenance, safety and production management.A training program was created targeting maintenance reduction, productivity improvement and increased utilisation and availability. Operators were first acclimatised to the simulated environment, had their current performance baselined, then received targeted coaching, with the process repeated to reinforce learnings. Concurrently, production, maintenance, and safety data was being measured in the real world to measure skills transfer. Due to limited telemetry available from the equipment, many of the data points for the project were sourced from maintenance logs, and accounting data.Equipment failure data measured from unscheduled maintenance records showed an overall 6.5 per cent decrease in unscheduled maintenance following the implementation of the training program. This rate of reduction correlated with the significant decrease in equipment abuse behaviours measured within the simulator during this period. Additionally, overall maintenance activities showed a significant decrease, confirming that reductions in unscheduled maintenance were not achieved through increases in scheduled maintenance. The reduction in equipment damage also increased availability and utilisation of the truck fleet. This highlights that the maintenance improvements not only reduced maintenance costs, but made the fleet available for more production. Moreover, the variability of the operator performance was decreased by 86 per cent, and the difference between their best operator and the worst is less than the baseline; this showed a gap where machine abuse, productivity and cost are impacted directly.This project illustrated that even small-scale mining operations with an experienced operator workforce can achieve positive return on investment (ROI) from simulation-based training. The interest of industry, in particular future mining, is pointing towards the use of novel visualisation systems to improve the operational efficiency of user interfaces. While the technologies used to enhance operators’ experience are advancing, the implementation of novel visualisation paradigms within mining operations is trailing behind other industries, particularly health and aviation. In this work, we present a number of initiatives and use cases of immersive virtual and augmented reality systems that can fit within the mining context. These ideas represent a step towards new platforms that might increase the efficiency and safety of mining operations through applications such as 3D panoramic video monitoring technology with annotated information coming from big data analytics and visual analytics processing engines. However, while the technologies are used in a variety of training settings, their application in the working environment is lagging behind. This paper presents examples of scientific visualisations that could be applied in a mining context to extend the possibilities of operators’ cognitive abilities and working efficiency. A gold-silver-lead-zinc deposit at Montana Tunnels, Jefferson County, Montana is located in a diatreme of middle Eocene age (45 to 50 m.y.). Sulfide minerals within the diatreme occur as disseminations, veinlets, and locally as breccia matrix. Principal sulfide minerals are pyrite, sphalerite, and galena. The diatreme is a matrix-rich quartz latitic breccia with a fine grained rather soft matrix and heterolithic clasts. The ore deposit contains approximately 50 million tons of ore at a grade of 0.025 oz/ton Au, 0.5 oz/ton Ag, 0.25 % Pb, and 0.65 % Zn. Mining is by open pit methods. The original process flowsheet included flotation and cyanide leaching. Problems with the leaching circuit led to a change to the straight flotation process which is presently in use. To maintain a reason-ably uniform feed material, blending of ore is required for grades of four metals as well as for ore hardness and oxidation.

"Challenges have emerged as subway systems age and as new tunnels are bored in congested corridors or in high-risk environments. To help public transportation agencies address tunneling challenges, the American Public Transportation Association has convened numerous independent industry peer reviews composed of top experts in their fields to come together and provide recommendations and solutions. This paper provides case histories of peer reviews that include topics such as boring through toxic soils, boring underneath existing tunnels, retrofit of tunnel ventilation systems, and mitigation of water intrusion. Peer reviews are applicable to all tunnel projects worldwide. The paper will highlight the conditions of these challenges, peer review recommendations, steps taken to reach agreement, and the successes that resulted, which led to major changes, new legislation and reduction of risk. INTRODUCTION Public transit agencies face many challenges in maintaining and expanding safe transit operations, especially as systems age, ridership expands, and budgets remain flat. The development of new industry standards and federal safety regulations places further demands on transit systems, with compliance often taxing in-house resources. Studies of the state-of-good-repair across US public transit systems indicate a current backlog of $84 billion in maintenance projects, which will require an investment of $18.2 billion per year to eliminate the backlog by 2030[1]. Systems not in a state-of-good-repair may not operate efficiently, may not be available to meet the growing ridership demands, and may not meet required safety goals or reduction of risk. Innovation is another clear need transit agencies have for improving system performance and lowering operating costs.To meet these challenges, transit agencies often turn to industry peer reviews for guidance and recommendations as part of their overall strategy to maintain and grow the safe operation of their systems. As a service to its members, the American Public Transportation System (APTA) has developed an industry peer review program designed to give agencies opportunities to learn from each other and help them address challenges in operations, engineering design, and construction of their systems. Over the past 20 years, APTA has performed hundreds of peer reviews covering all aspects of transit system operations from fare collection to agency organization, project delivery methods to safety culture, and engineering design including tunneling and tunnel fire ventilation. As rail transit systems expand to meet increased ridership, it is often necessary to bore new tunnels for alignments in congested areas where surface rights-of-way are lacking. Such proposed alignments can pose significant challenges for transit agencies, as they contend with various tunneling problems."

"Sensor-based sorting technologies have potential to pre-concentrate low grade subeconomic ores through discarding the barren waste particles. However, the inability of sensors to accurately discriminate ore from waste is a barrier to prevent their wide applications. The present study focuses on the development of more intelligent sensing systems by using correlation and regression analysis of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) sensor responses on the copper ore samples obtained from Chile. The responses obtained through XRF scanning were reported both in the form of counts and the grades of elements. Linear and multiple linear correlation analyses were made between the XRF counts and the copper grades obtained through chemical analysis. Both the heterogeneity of the ore particles and the matrix effect in the XRF measurement are discussed in the study.INTRODUCTIONSorting can not only discard waste rocks away from the concentrator but also recover metal bearing ore particles that would be lost to the waste dump. The benefits of ore sorting include reduced energy consumption, water and reagent usage in the downstream operations (Bamber, 2008; Gunson, Klein, Veiga, & Dunbar, 2012; Kleine & Wotruba, 2010; Knapp, Neubert, Schropp, & Wotruba, 2014; Kobzev, 2014; Lessard, de Bakker, & McHugh, 2014; Mazhary & Klein, 2015; Robben, Wotruba, Robben, von Ketelhodt, & Kowalzcyk, 2013). X-ray fluorescence belongs to sensor-based sorting technologies and Xrays are a high energy-high frequency form of electromagnetic radiation inhabiting the region between the ultraviolet radiation and gamma rays (Shackley, 2011). Recent XRF sorting studies on low grade copper ores were carried out at MineSense Technologies Ltd. aimed at increasing the capacity related to improving the understanding of ore heterogeneity as the basis for developing semi-bulk or bulk sorting systems (MineSense Technologies Ltd., 2016)."

"A new heat recovery system is proposed. This system uses the endothermic heat of gasification reaction instead of sensible heat to recover the energy of molten blast furnace slag. The gasification technological parameter in molten blast furnace was calculated and the exergy of the system was analyzed. The gasification reactions were studied kinetically by the isothermal thermogravimetry using STA409PC thermal analyzer. The results showed that, according to different gasification agent, this system can produce syngas with different C-H ratio. The exergy efficiency of this system is high and its internal exergy loss rate is about 11%. This method can bring huge economic and environmental benefits which are important to the survival and sustainable development of iron-steel enterprises. The molten BF slag acts as not only thermal media but also good catalyst. The kinetic parameters on gasification reaction with different types of coal used differ from each other.IntroductionEnergy consumption in the iron-making process is about 50%~60% of the total energy input. The blast furnace is very important in the iron & steel process. So energy conservation and emission reduction about blast furnace is very important. In recent years, in order to recovery energy, many new technologies such as TRT (Top gas pressure Recovery Turbine) and CCPP (Combined Cycle Power Plant) were used in iron-making. But the energy of molten blast furnace (BF) slag has only been used limitedly so far.Molten BF (Blast Furnace) slag is the byproduct of iron-making at the high temperatures range from 1723 to 1923K, and has a large amount of sensible heat remaining. The yield of molten BF slag is about 300 kg per ton of pig iron. In conventional processes, molten BF slag is quenched rapidly using a large amount of water to produce a glassy-granulated slag. The quenching slag must be dried before it can be used in cement manufacture. During the process, a large amount of water was consumed and the energy of molten slag can not be recovered. At the same time, it causes environmental pollution problems. So the critical problems of the process are not only energy recovery of molten slag and reducing emission of H2S and SO2, but also guaranteeing the subsequent use value of slag. For this propose, many new technologies were investigated to recover the thermal energy of molten slag. The promising methods are dry granulation [1-4] and reforming of methane [5-9]. The method, utilization of reaction heat instead of latent heat and sensible heat, is quite attractive from viewpoints of energy storage without heat loss, and makes a connection to other industry. But both of them are in laboratory. In this paper, coal gasification in molten BF slag was used to recover the energy of molten BF slag. The gasification technological parameter in molten BF was calculated and the exergy of the system was analyzed. Some typical thiacyclopentanes and thiacyclohexanes were synthesized to provide reference compounds needed for the identification of sulfur compounds in crude oils. Two general methods of synthesis were employed: (1) cleavage of 2-alkyltetrahydropyrans with hydrogen bromide followed by the reaction of the resulting dibromoalkanes with sodium sulfide and (2) the catlyzed reaction of cyclic ethers or 1)4-or 1)5-alkanediols with hydrogen sulfide. Both methods produced mixtures of 2-alkylthiacyclopentanes and 2-alkylthiacyclohexanes with 2-alkyltetrahydropyran as the starting material. The structures of the reaction products were established by analysis for sulfur; desulfurization; gas-liquid chromatography (GLC); mass, infrared, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra; and an alternate synthesis. The synthesis of the cyclic sulfides contributed substantially to the identification of 10 members of this class of sulfur compounds in crude oil.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by a subsidiary of Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.The Toguraci underground mine development commenced in 2011 with ore production commencing in 2012. Water temperatures ranging from 50°C to 80°C were encountered in the Toguraci open pit associated with the structures containing the gold bearing veins and are believed to be fed from a relic volcanic system one to two kilometres below the mine. Underground development and production has continued to intersect these structures with the result that an integrated programme of geological, hydrogeological modelling and operational project work has been required to dewater the mine ahead of the descending stoping fronts.This paper will detail these programmes.CITATION:Lawolo, R, Isles, J, Evert, J, Valenza, A and King, S, 2017. This report describes Koppelman's work to develop the K-Fuel® Series C Process used to dry and stabilize Powder River Basin coal. It also contains summaries of the results of bench-scale and pilot plant tests conducted to prove the Series C Process. The process is being used by the KFx-Thermo Ecotek partnership for a 500,000 ton per year commercial plant that has been constructed near Gillette, Wyoming. The plant is presently undergoing shakedown.

Increases in productivity and improvements in mining occupational safety and health are intrinsically linked. Over the past years, the German Hard Coal Mining Industry has been able to accomplish both: an increase in coal production and, at the same time, a significantly reduction of accidents. This success has been achieved by advances in technology, better organization and investment in people. Since 1990 productivity has more than doubled, while the total number of accidents has been reduced by more than 90%. Further development started initially with the mechanisation of the winning and drivage technology. Innovative technology and standardisation of the mining equipment were one reason for the increase in productivity and reduction of the accident rate. Therefore this technical development was not only one important pillar of the TOM model explicated later but also the requirement for the successful development of the other pillars. In addition to further developing this innovative technology it was possible to realise procedural and organisational improvements. As a result, the above achievement is based on implementing the three pillars of the so-called "TOM" model (technology, organization, ?Mensch? = human). To increase safety, improve performance, raise awareness and change of employees? attitude, the following technical and organizational requirements have been introduced: ??New innovative technology and procedures, standardized techniques and better equipment. ??Measures to revise or redefine the organizational structure, processes and systems of work, which were then integrated into the company policy and procedures as a company management tool. ??Personnel measures (investment in people). These include, improving motivation and behaviour, training, communication to raise and to change awareness of safety issues. Success in Occupational Health and Safety is not an automatic or self-regulating process. It needs hard work to make improvements and it must be treated as a recurring cyclic process. As a result of the above, occupational health and safety has become a natural part of daily work in the German Hard Coal Mining Industry. This could only be achieved by the unconditional "commitment" of all managers and employees to the issues, coupled with discipline and responsible action. Further improvements towards the ultimate aim of "zero" accidents are only possible by mutual involvement in implementing the ?TOM? (technology, organization and ?Mensch? human) model.

"It is great significance to realize the efficiently and comprehensively utilization of iron, manganese and aluminum from refractory high-aluminum and high-manganese iron ores. Aimed at the two types of low grade refractory iron ores, mineralogical characteristics were studied. The direct reduction behaviors and evolution of mineral compositions of single iron ores and their blended ones were analyzed, and the corresponding reduction mechanisms were demonstrated. The results showed that only a part of iron oxides in high-aluminum ore are transformed to metallic iron after reduction, while the other react with aluminum and silica to form fayalite and hercynite which are difficult to be reduced. For the high manganese iron ore, most iron oxides can be reduced to metallic iron and manganese oxides can combined with aluminum-silica minerals to form galaxite and tephroite, promoting the reduction of iron oxides. Co-reduction results demonstrate that reduction of high- aluminum ore can be promoted by adding with high-manganese ore. Metallization and metallic iron grains increase dramatically by elevate high-manganese blending ratio. At the ratio of 60% high- manganese iron ore in the pellet feed, iron-slag separate well with a slag assaying 28.51%~36.35% Al2O3 and the recovery of iron and manganese can be reached 93%, respectively. The high-aluminum rich manganese residue was recycled with H2SO4. INTRODUCTION The growth of the Chinese iron and steel industry has been pushed forward by its rapid economic development in recent years, and 1126 million tons of iron ore have been consumed in 2014, where 933 million tons were imported according to the data from World Steel Association [1]. However, iron resources are limited, and especially the reserves of high-grade iron ores are declining, so it is of significant importance to optimize the mining rate of iron resources [2] and to utilize low- grade refractory iron resources, such as high-aluminum iron ore."

The availability, cost and use of fuel and electricity for the cement industry is difficult to predict with a great degree of accuracy because the historical pattern of factors affecting energy was disrupted during the years 1972, 1973 and 1974. Forecasting is both an art and science and is based on .the premise that the best indicator of the future is the past. Statistical data is used to guide economists and businessmen in their predictions of the future. Even though the energy picture is changing, it is believed that electricity and fuel will be available for the cement industry in the foreseeable future, and this energy will be more costly in relation to the other items that are part of the manufacturing costs for portland cement.

"The ""rate-of-preduotion curve"" described in the revised Treasury Manual* was devised by the author in May, 1920, and since that time has been use by the oil and gas valuation section of the Treasury Department in determining the rate of production of wells for purposes of taxation. This curve is most useful for estimating the future production of a well, or group of wells, of known daily settled production, where future-production curves and tables based on yearly production records are available. It also provides a means for determining the past year's production of a well of known daily settled production, or conversely, the estimated production on any day for a well of known yearly production.The rate-of-production curve is auxiliary to the production decline curve and is derived from it in estimating the future production of a tract, a production decline curve formed from the records of the tract itself should be used. If such records are not available, and there is no information which leads to the belief that the average production decline of the wells in this tract differs from the average for the pool or district, an average curve for the pool or district may be used.The accompanying chart illustrates a typical rate-of-production curve, with the yearly production decline curve from which it is derived. The production decline curve shown is for an average well in the Augusta district, Butler County, Kansas, and has been constructed from the tables given on page 128 of the revised Treasury Manual.The ordinate (vertical scale on the chart) of any point on a yearly production decline curve represents the production of the well during the year previous to the date shown by the abscissa (horizontal scale). For example, the chart shows that an average well, which produced 100,000 barrels of oil in 1915. produced 92,000 barrels in the year previous to January 19, 1916, produced 53,300 barrels in the year previous to June 1, 1916; produced 49,000 barrels in the year previous to July 1, 1916, 27,000 barrels in 1916, and 10,000 barrels in 1917."

Certain gas wells tend to form hydrates in the production tubing. This paper outlines a method developed and used by the Author's company to overcome the problem. The injection of glycol to control hydrates results in sufficient dehydration to allow the gas to be trans-ported through a field-gathering system b a treatment plant. Sub-surface injection of glycol also offers a method of introducing corrosion inhibitors into the gas stream. The major operating difficulties have been overcome and the system is now in use in the northeastern part of British Columbia.

This paper presents some of the results of a research on long-term subsidence over and near the chain pillar systems -the area available to long-term subsidence in longwall operations. Although the long-term subsidence in most longwall operation is insignificant, it does exist in some cases. For the cases where long-term subsidence is significant, it has been found that the development process can be expressed by an exponential decaying function. The stability factor of the chain pillar system and the potential for long-term subsidence are the two important factors that control the magnitude and development characteristics of the long-term subsidence process.

Soil nails are often utilized as a temporary or permanent earth retention technique for slope stabilization and for excavation retention for existing or new structures. Soils nails are generally advantageous as installation is relatively rapid and they can be installed beneath existing structures and where site access for equipment is limited. Due to the typically small cross-section of these elements, the inability to inspect the holes prior to grouting/concreting, and the various installation techniques utilized, quality control for assessing the integrity along the entire length is limited. Currently, quality assurance is conducted by load testing to verify the pull out capacity after installation. The load testing is typically done on a small percentage of the total number of soil nails. This paper will provide the results of a demonstration where the new Non-Destructive Test (NDT) method Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP) was used to access the integrity of several soil nails along their entire lengths. This TIP method has been successfully used for several years to assess the integrity in drilled shafts and ACIP piles. The TIP method assesses the integrity across the entire cross-section and can identify regions where bulges, necks, and insufficient grout/concrete are present. TIP testing can also help assure that the contractor's installation methods are adequate and consistent for the intended design. For the project presented, instrumented Thermal Wire were affixed to the centered tension bars prior to placement in the excavated shafts. Temperature measurements were recorded from the hydration energy generated after grout/concrete placement, capturing the entire heating cycle. Manufactured defects were installed on the center bar at multiple locations. The results and conclusion will be discussed as well as recommendations for future use.

Operating and maintaining the heavy equipment used in open-pit mining operations is an ongoing challenge for mines. Typical operations employ a combination of shovels, wheel loaders, and haul trucks to excavate and transport the material for further processing. As this is the first point of contact for the material after blasting, it is often a bottleneck of all downstream processes, thus, equipment uptime and efficiency is crucial. Automated systems for bucket tooth monitoring, payload measurement, proximity detection, and rock fragmentation analysis will be examined. The impact of these systems on operation safety, efficiency, and reliability, in real-world scenarios will be investigated. The process of managing all the above fleet of equipment in a mine can be streamlined by connecting the equipment monitoring systems to a central server. Using the central server, the distribution of this information can be automated to ensure that the right people see the data in a timely manner, improving both proactive and reactive responses to threats to safety and productivity.
