The effects of detonation of downlines and downline-booster systems on lodse-poured charges of 94% porous prilled ammonium nitrate/6% fuel oil (AN/FO) were determined. Detonation stability was indicated by the initiation-failure pattern of detonating fuse witness lines located at intervals along the charge. Steel tubing was used as the confining medium. Charge diameters (d) varied between 2-21/32 and 8.1/8 in. and specific charge weights (w) of downlines between 4.0 and 93.2gr/ft. The axes of charge and downline were colinear. The minimum value of w required to cause initiation of AN/FO increased with d. When initiated by a downline only, the charge'underwentlowòorder detonation. When downline-booster systems are used, the detonation wave in the downline cuts all equatorial planes in the charge before the detonation wave in the surrounding AN/FO. If the downline itself does not cause initiation, therefore, the explosive ahead of the main detonation wave is crushed, and hence desensitised, by the radially-expanding compression wave and gases generated by the downline. In a given equatorial plane, the fraction gftharge undergoing detonation decreases with an increase in the booster-plane distance. WHEN some materials are ground dry in a ball mill, a stage of comminution is reached at which the finely divided particles begin to adhere to the balls and to the mill lining. As grinding progresses, a coating accumulates upon the grinding media, which tends to cushion the impacts and thus retard reduction of the material, and finally becomes so thick that all grinding ceases. At this stage, the characteristic noise produced by the grinding media dur-ing normal mill operation changes to a dull, muffled sound. In most instances, the formation of the coating marks the practical limit of size reduction. Industrial requirements for fine grinding frequently meet with this obstacle, and the tendency in many com-mercial operations to grind materials to a higher degree of fineness than formerly makes the solution of this problem an im-portant one. The phenomenon is of far greater importance, therefore, than the limited amount of research and technical discussion devoted to it implies. In order to learn more about the coating of different materials when ground dry to a high degree of fineness, certain labora-tory tests were made from which it was found that different materials form coat-ings at widely different size distributions. It is probable that most materials will coat if they are ground fine enough; the exceptions have inherent lubricating qual-ities, like coal and graphite.

"Perhaps the single most significant variable in the evaluation of a mining project is the reserve estimate. Many parameters are considered when estimating reserves, among them geology. This paper examines the link between the quality of a reserve estimate and a good understanding of the geological controls for the deposit. A clear understanding of the geometry is essential to the accurate definition of the shape and size of the deposit. This includes the definition of any structural controls as well as the proper interpretation of the stratigraphy. Further when the distribution of grades is erratic and there is consequently a high nugget effect, there are significant problems in estimating the true grade of the deposit.Two Saskatchewan examples are presented, one with good knowledge of the controls and therefore good estimates of reserves, and the other with a poor understanding of the geology and resultant problems in deriving good estimates. In both cases the reserve estimates at various stages in the project development are compared to actual results from underground work. The first example is the Star Lake Mine where just about all the estimates were within 10070 of the actual on both tonnage and grade. The Laurel Lake deposit is discussed to show how problems in interpreting the geological data make reserve estimation very difficult. Laurel Lake has the additional problem of erratic grade distribution."

WHEN reviewing the progress made in mining geology for the year 1953, one might say that not much has been accomplished and, indeed, in a subject such as economic geology not much progress should be expected in the 10 months of the year which elapsed before this article was prepared. This seeming lack of progress, however, disappears when the facts are investigated a bit. There undoubtedly are more economic geologists at work than ever before. It is probably not an exaggeration to say that more geologists are now employed by a single company in the Lake Superior district than were employed in the whole district 20 years ago. In most mining districts geologists are busy with numerous problems of production, development, and exploration and some give an occasional thought to the scientific problems of the science, or rather the art, of mining geology. In fact, this very intense activity of mining geologists is one reason why progress seems slow; they do not have time to write up results of investigations. There is also a great amount of work being done which is not released because of company policy. Conditions have improved very much in recent years but mining corporations, in general, have some distance to go before attaining par with the petroleum industry in this respect.

ASH in coal has always been regarded as an undesirable substance, as the heat content of a coal decreases in direct proportion to its ash content. It represents so much inert material that has to be transported, handled when the coal is burned, and finally disposed of. W. R. Roberts, in an address before the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, on Sept. 29, 1925, said that on an annual output of five hundred million tons of coal, a reduction of 3 per cent. of ash means fifteen million tons of refuse and a decrease of $30,000,000 in freight charges. Ash also often prevents efficient utilization of the coal through the formation of clinker caused by the melting of the ash constituents when subjected to heat. The mineral constituents of coal may be of such nature as to make the coal unsuited for specific uses, as for instance, high-sulfur coal for making metallurgical coke. While the usual proximate analysis of coal gives the amount of ash, it gives no information as to the nature and composition of the ash nor of the mineral constituents from which the ash is produced. For the efficient washing of coal to remove ash-forming constituents it is desirable to know the composition and distribution of the ash-forming constituents. Obviously such information is also desirable for the most efficient utilization of coal.

A steadily growing body of evidence indicates that earthquake ground motions can cause failure of rock slopes that are otherwise stable under static loading conditions. As a result, the economic optimum working slope angle is reduced when earthquake shaking is considered in surface mine design, especially in regions of high seismicity. When designing surface mine slopes to withstand seismic motion it is as important to consider the probability of experiencing various levels of ground shaking as it is to consider the characteristics of the ground motion. For most slope designs, simple probabilistic techniques such as extreme value or maximum likelihood techniques are appropriate. These techniques, however, should be applied in such a way that a probability value is assigned to characteristic ground motion parameters at the mine rather than to nearby earthquake magnitudes. Several techniques have been developed to analyze rock slopes subjected to dynamic loads. Most of these techniques do not adequately account for the ground motion parameters of concern. The best technique appears to be one that utilizes actual earthquake time histories. A simple technique that calculates block displacement for any input accelerogram, using a linear acceleration approximation between time steps, has been developed that accurately accounts for rock block response. Results using this technique indicate that the following factors are important for assessing rock slope stability in earthquake regions:

Improve safety at mineral operations that use cyanide leach solutions to recover precious metals from finely ground ores, Approach Provide an alternative, non-acidic means of cleaning processing systems such as the State-of-Maine filter system, thereby reducing the exposure of workers to toxic hydrogen cyanide gas (HCN), The Problem Many gold and silver mining operations use cyanide solutions to dissolve gold and silver from ores. The precious metals frequently are recovered from pregnant leach solutions by the Merrill-Crowe recovery process, whereby gold and silver is precipitated with zinc dust. When that method is used, suspended particles in the leach solution must be filtered out before zinc precipitation can occur. This filtering is accomplished with small packaged plants, such as the State-of-Maine (SOM) filtering system. Unfortunately, the filters become clogged with calcium carbonate scale after about 2 to 10 days of operation and must be cleaned before further precious metals recovery operations can continue, Cleaning the system is a hazardous task because the acid is not compatible with the alkaline cyanide leach solutions, and toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) gas may be produced when the acid and solution are mixed. That gas, if breathed or contacted with the skin, can cause cyanosis which may induce nausea and even asphyxia and death. Detonators representing a sampling of various domestic commercial delay detonators were fired at various direct-current (dc) firing levels. Results of firings using well-below-recommended firing levels showed marked increases in delay times above the nominal values. There was also a marked increase in variation, to the extent that out-of-sequence firings would be essentially assured in any typical blasting round at these low firing levels. Within the range of recommended levels the effects of current increases were not considered to be of great importance relative to other overriding effects, such as the significant difference noted in average values of detonators from different lots having the same nominal delay. This effect, when combined with the normal variation noted among members from the same lot, would cause out-of-sequence firings with detonators from a neighboring delay period. Where comparisons with results from another study were possible, it was found that both studies observed quite similar variations in delay times about the average values, and a lower probability of out-of-sequence firings for the shorter delay period groups. The criterion of the previous study for assessing the likelihood of observing out-of-sequence firings, when applied to the Bureau of Mines data, properly identified two neighboring delay period groups where out-of-sequence firings would occur.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) has been actively treated by neutralization from about 80 abandoned or closed mines in Japan. More efficient and cost effective treatment processes has been demanded for AMD due to the government investment of billions of yen every year to protect the environment from these discharges. In this study, quantitative modeling was conducted for actual AMD to predict pH or residual concentration of toxic elements after neutralization/co-precipitation process. Simple chemical equilibrium calculation was not adequate for quantitative prediction of pH after neutralization, because residual concentration of major elements of AMD, such as Fe or Si, could not be quantitatively calculated. When oxidation rate of Fe(II) to Fe(III) and precipitation rate of kaolinite were added to the model, quantitative prediction of pH and Fe or Si concentration was achieved. Surface complexation at the interface between hydroxide such as ferrihydrite or aluminum hydroxide and AMD was the most important mechanism for removal of dilute toxic ions. When surface complexation model at the interface of ferrihydrite was added to the model, residual As (V) and Pb (II) concentration after neutralization/coprecipitation process was successfully calculated. On the other hand, surface complezation model of aluminum hydroxide was also necessary for quantitative prediction of residual Zn(II) concentration after neutralization/co-precipitation process.

When metals are subjected to mechanical working, such as rolling, one of the phenomena that take place is a movement of the crystals of the metal into a system or systems of orientation which bear an angular relation to the direction of working. In rolled metal the crystals may orient themselves with respect to the rolling plane or the rolling direction, or both. Direct evidence of the existence of preferred orientations in rolled metal has been obtained by numerous investigators from X-ray patterns of the rolled metal. Most of these workers used a monochromatic pinhole method. Where the degree of preference for a single orientation is high the monochromatic pinhole pattern may be interpreted by a geometrical calculation based on the angular relationships of the planes in the crystal and the diffraction arcs on the X-ray pattern. This process may be aided by the geometrical construction of the locus sphere (Lagenkugel), and reflection circles of Polanyi,l Polanyi and Weissenberg,2 and Mark and Weissenberg,3 and of the plane polar figures (flachenpolfigur) of Franz Wever.4 R. M. Bozorth5 solves X-ray patterns from metals having a single preferred orientation by means of a series of charts which when placed over the X-ray pattern give directly certain angular relationships, between the crystal planes and the surface of the specimen.

THE methods of electrical prospecting, which employ contact electrodes to produce an electric field in the ground, furnish information concerning the constitution of the material beneath the surface, as indicated by the distortion of this artificially produced field and anomalies therein. To reveal the distortion of such field of known character, it is only necessary to measure qualitatively the direction of the field, using sensitive compensation methods. In such a case, the survey is relatively simple, and that is an important factor from a practical point of view, The distortion of the normal field thus determined permits an easy interpretation and gives approximate information as to the subsurface conditions, without the necessity of a thorough theoretical knowledge of the electrical field. The true field of application of the equipotential lines and search-coil methods, which are based on this principle of directional determination of the electrical field in the ground, is that of search for deposits of economic minerals for the mining industry, although they can also be used in solution of other problems; for example, in the determination of the strike of anisotropic beds. The distortion of the electric field as represented by the picture of equipotential lines or other measured curves is striking only when bodies having conductivities different from that of the country rock are embedded in the underground, or when the underground is anisotropic.

A construction material based on plasticized sulfur and mineral aggregate, that is superior in corrosion resistance and strength to portland cement concrete. The material can be used in the chemical, metallurgical, and fertilizer industries, and will also provide an attractive market for by-product sulfur resulting from compliance with pollution regulations. How It Is Made Sulfur concrete is thermoplastic material. Plasticized sulfur is mixed with sand and gravel aggregate heated to 375-400° F. The sulfur melts and acts as the binder or cement. The sulfur concrete is poured hot and sets at a temperature of 200° F. Full strength is attained in a few hours, compared to several days for portland cement concretes. Sulfur concrete even pours and sets in freezing weather. Although unmodified sulfur with aggregate will produce a sulfur concrete with good initial properties, it undergoes crystallographic modifications, and deteriorates with time, particularly when exposed to moisture or freeze-thaw conditions. The Bureau of Mines has developed plasticizers which, when reacted with the sulfur, give sulfur concretes with excellent moisture and freeze-thaw resistance. The plasticizers are based on mixtures of dicyclopentadlene (DCPD) and ollgomers of cyclopentadiene. About 5 percent by weight of the plasticizers is reacted with molten sui fur for several hours. The sulfur cement can be used directly or allowed to solidify for easier handling and storage.

The effect of the presence of fine particles of kaolinite and montmorillonite on the induction time for attachment of bubbles to particles of a copper concentrate rich in chalcopyrite was evaluated in this study. The results obtained from induction time measurements were correlated with data of concentrate recovery achieved from micro-flotation experiments. The effect of the presence of fine clays on the stability of air-water foams was also studied through measurements of the foam volume generated in a glass column under different conditions of air flowrate and MIBC concentrations. The experimental results showed that induction time values increased under the presence of fine clays. These data agreed with results obtained from micro-flotation experiments that showed that copper concentrate recovery decreased when clay particles were added. Although a complete explanation for these results is not available, the fact that experimental observations indicated that fine clay particles tend to adsorb on gas bubbles, suggests that the interactions between fine phyllosilicate particles and air bubbles have to be taken into account when studying the effect of clays on froth flotation. Foamability tests showed that the presence of fine clay particles increased the foam volumes only at high additions of clays and low dosages of MIBC. The results obtained at higher dosages of MIBC showed that the foam volumes decreased with the addition of clays under all the experimental conditions tested.

ANFO blasting agents may undergo an exothermic reaction when they contact warm ore bodies that contain pyrite and its weathering products. The reaction is very fast at temperatures above 80° C. Urea, when present in sufficient amounts, inhibits this reaction at temperatures below 180° C. But urea-ammonium nitrate mixtures are very hygroscopic and, in certain climates, may be difficult to handle in the field. Reaction-inhibiting characteristics of three compounds were reported by the Bureau of Mines in 1979. Recently, the Bureau investigated the reaction-inhibiting qualities of five additional compounds. Mixtures of ANFO, pyrite, weathering product, and prospective inhibitors were slowly heated, under conditions simulating a hot borehole, to determine prospective inhibitor capability at temperatures up to ~175° C. Small-scale thermal tests of the same mixtures were used for verification and clarification of results. Two organic compounds, phthalimide and xanthine, similar in structure to urea, failed to inhibit the reaction. Zinc oxide and calcium carbonate were found inferior to urea, though zinc oxide raised the onset of reaction from 80° C to about 140° C. Only magnesium oxide was found to be similar to urea in its inhibitory ability at temperatures below 175° C. Based on results from analysis of quenched residues, the use of more than 5 wt-pct magnesium oxide is recommended.

Diamond drilling is a relatively new commodity in terms of drilling. The first known diamond drilling activities were carried out in the Swiss Alps around 1863 when the Swiss engineer M Leschot designed and made a tube with a diamond set face which was used in probing ahead drilling for the Mont Cenis tunnel (Figure 1). Craelius AB which today is a part of the Atlas Copco Group was formed in 1886. The name Craelius is a family name and the founder of the company was Per Anton Craelius (Figure 2). He went to the United States to study this new technology using diamonds to extract core samples and when he returned to Sweden designed his first diamond drilling machine. It was a man-powered drill needing a crew of six men, two to crank the unit, one to feed, two to power the flush pump and a foreman (Figure 3). As time passed through research and development, the original design was improved and manpower was substituted for steam engines and later combustion engines or electric motors (Figure 4). During the 1930s the drills radically changed designs and took the form of the short stroke drills which to a certain extent are still in use today. The original design of these drills have been refined during the years, hydraulic chucks, gear boxes and other improvements have been added.

Since Bohler discovered, in 1903, on cooling certain alloy steels, the phenomenon of a new and lower temperature transformation than the usual Ar 3-2-1 obtained by increasing the maximum temperature to which the material was heated, much has been published1 connecting this phenomenon with a large number of dissimilar steels of high alloy content. From the fact that the transformation divides itself, taking place at two widely separated temperatures, it has been called a "split transformation." The significant facts established by recent investigators2 are: that when the transformation occurs at the higher temperature Ar1, troostite or a decomposition product is formed, and that when the transformation occurs at the lower temperature Ar", the resulting structure is martensite. The terminology Ar' and Ar" adopted here is that of Portevin. Previous Investigations Reviewing the work on this subject published in a recent issue of Revue de Metallurgie and referring in particular to his statement that martensite is a solution of carbide in alpha iron, Le Chatelier says :4 "How then can a theory already 20 years old demand new investigations? The reason for it is that we have not succeeded in proving directly the real presence of the transformation of iron during the very short duration of the quenching. Mechanical properties typical of coal are used in the comparisons of pillar strengths based on finite elements and the empirical equations of Holland-Gaddy, Salamon-Munro, Obert¬Duvall, and Bieniawski-PSU. A correlation among the strength parameters which are employed in the empirical equations, in Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek-Brown failure criteria is established. Emphasis is given to the important distinction between the mechanical properties of small rock specimens and those related to the rock mass. An elastoplastic version of Hoek-Brown criteria has been developed and implemented in a finite elements code. The strengths calculated using the empirical equations showed a good agreement when the ratio width by height of the pillars varied from I to 8, except for Holland-Gaddy equation which exhibited lower values. Under the hypothesis of associative perfect elastoplasticity used, pillar strength calculated using Mohr¬Coulomb yield criterion became excessively high for all the models having a pillar width by height ratio above 2. The finite elements solution based on Hoek-Brown criterion predicted strengths around fifty percent larger than Bieniawski-PSU equation when the pillars width by height ration varied from 3 to 8, showing good agreement below that range. It has been concluded that, under the hypothesis of percfect plasticity, stress analysis techniques may overestimate the strength of rock structures subjected to high confining stresses.

A field test was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at the Cyprus Plateau Starpoint No. 2 Mine. near Price. UT. to study the support rock interaction mechanics. Twelve instrumented. fully grouted roof holts and eight sagmeters were installed in the roadway of a two-entry gate road to measure load changes and roof movements. Readings were taken during section development and as each longwall panel passed the test area. Loads that resulted from development of the en- tries were higher than would be expected if simple suspension of the roof rock was the sole cause of loading. When the first longwall face passed the test section massive beam behavior was exhibited over the entry and adjacent pillar. However, no significant localized bending was detected at any of the strain gauge locations. After the first panel passed the test section. all the roof bolts had at least one zone where the steel had yielded. Loading continued to increase. and when the face from the second panel was adjacent to the test section. 70 pct of the strain gauges at the 6-. 1%. and 30-in locations had passed the yield point of the steel roof bolt. However, even at these high load levels, the supporting pattern was sufficient to provide adequate reinforcement to the mine roof.

IN 1904-5 diamond drilling operations in the Mount Morgan mine proved the presence of some millions of tons of rich copper-gold ore, averaging about 45%to 50%silica and 22%Fe as sulphide. To smelt this ore in blast furnaces, without previous concentration, large quantities of basic flux were required. Unlimited quantities of cheap limestone were available at Marmor, on the GladstoneRockhampton railway, 50 miles from Mount Morgan, but the supply of iron flux was a more difficult problem. Smelting Operations started with one furnace in January, 1906, using as flux low-grade sulphide ore from the mine, containing very little silica. When the second furnace was blown in this was supplemented by ironstone from small deposits in the immediate district. It was recognized that these sources of supply would be insufficient to keep the full plant going after the third furnace had been blown in. Accordingly, the deposits at Kabra and Mount Etna were opened, neither of which proved capable of supplying the quantity required-viz., 1000 tons per week. Negotiations were meanwhile being conducted with the Marble Island Iron and Limestone Co. to obtain the right to mine at Iron Island, where a sufficiently large deposit was known to exist. When lying over 200-250m depth, many seams and surrounding strata are gassy enough to create mining difficulties , particularly in highly productive longwalls as well as in their development headings. In addition to the gassiness of seams or stra- ta in the outgassing volume around working, the shape expansion and limits of this one influences much the intensity of gas emission. These charac- teristics of outgassing volume differ very much ac- cording to the permeabilities of the seams and strata encountered by their fracturation due to mi- ning. Moreover, the shape of the outgassing volume is very much modified by the rate of advance of the face. In nearly impermeable deposits, gas flows from a limited outgassing volume. When the rates of advance of a face are medium or low, the shape and dimensions of this volume do not change very much and outgassing volume is translated progressi- vely with the face advance. This explains why, in the past, it was observed that there was for each seam an average steady specific emission of gas, round which the volume of gas evolved per mined ton or per mined unit area, calculated over a cer- tain time, was oscillating. Combined with a statisti- cal irregularity coefficient, this allowed prediction gas of emission and thus to take decisions for air ventilation, drainage, and eventually production.
