The Risk-Informed Decision Making (RIDM) working group is a group of industry professionals formed under the joint initiative undertaken by United States Society of Dams (USSD), Tailings Dam Safety Committee and Canadian Dam Associations (CDA) Mining Dam Safety Committee (MDC). The working group was organized to develop a guideline on implementation of a RIDM process relating to the design of mining water dams and Tailings Storage Facilities (TSF). Since its formation in 2022, the group has completed a literature review of more than one hundred (100) cross industry publications on applications of RIDM in mining water dams and TSFs, has held two industry workshops in Niagara Falls, Ontario in 2024 and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2025 to capture industry input relating to the understanding and application of RIDM. The working group has subsequently formulated a process that constitutes good industry practice as it relates to application of RIDM in mining dams and TSFs. The authors, through their engagement and leadership in the working group and facilitating the two industry workshops in 2024 and 2025, are of the opinion that the successful application process of RIDM across Canada and United States (U.S.) is still not clear to many industry practitioners. There is confusion over terminology, good versus poor RIDM, and in some cases reluctance to use the RIDM terminology. This paper addresses critical knowledge gaps identified in the RIDM implementation for mining water dams and TSFs through three years of stakeholder engagement. It provides clarity of the process via a joint position statement and implementation roadmap, resolves terminology confusion, and documents contradicting industry opinions to promote adoption of good RIDM practices in Canada, U.S. and beyond.

Fatigue is a major contributor to haul-truck incidents in mining, with up to 65% of fatigue-related events associated with operator drowsiness or microsleep episodes, Williamson et al. (2011) and Caterpillar (2007). This study examines whether operator fatigue produces measurable and repeatable signatures in haul-truck telemetry. Eight confirmed fatigue-related disengagement events were analyzed using 20-minute telemetry windows centered around the incident. Statistical descriptors, Z-score normalization, first- and second-order derivatives, sliding-window variability, and cross-signal correlations were extracted from engine speed, throttle position, fuel rate, ground speed, and brake indicators. A logistic regression classifier was trained and evaluated using leave-one-event-out cross-validation. The model achieved a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) area under the curve (AUC) scores of 0.75–0.79, demonstrating consistent discriminative capability. A characteristic shutdown sequence characterized by sudden throttle collapse, fuel-rate decay, RPM reduction, and unbraked coasting was observed across all events, indicating operator disengagement rather than mechanical malfunction. Earlywarning indicators appeared 90–500 seconds before shutdown in the events analyzed, suggesting practical potential for real-time fatigue prediction. These findings provide initial evidence that telemetry-based fatigue detection is feasible and could enhance safety in mining operations.

Ionic liquids (ILs) are molten salts composed of an organic cation that are liquid below 100 °C. They demonstrate unique physico-chemical properties such as good conductivity, negligible vapor pressure and non-flammability. As a consequence, they are often regarded as green solvents and could become an alternative to the use of both high-temperature molten salts and volatile organic solvents in rare-earth elements processing and recycling. The diversity of interactions existing in an ionic liquid allows the solubilization of both polar and apolar compounds. Moreover, coordinating functions on their composing ions can lead to stabilization of some species. For instance, in non-aqueous media, europium exists in the (II) oxidation state which is not stable in aqueous solutions. Understanding the mechanism of Eu(III) electrochemical reduction to Eu(II) and the stabilization of Eu(II) species in IL media could be of major interest for the development of innovative recycling processes. Using transient electrochemistry and UV-Vis spectroscopy we could get valuable information on the redox behavior of the Eu(III)/(II) couple in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([EMIm][NTf2]). Reduction of Eu(III) to Eu(II) and stability of Eu(II) was also studied thanks to a XAS-spectroelectrochemistry set up used to follow in situ the evolution of the XANES spectrum around the L3 edge of Eu during electrolysis.

Liquid Crystalline Polymers (LCPs) provide favorable dielectric properties for extremely high frequency (30–100 GHz) radio frequency device packaging and printed circuit board substrates. The material studied in this work is a proprietary, thermotropic LCP composite developed and manufactured by iQLP (Woburn, MA, USA). Dielectric constants measured in the flow direction of the post-processed materials differ between the two processes, 3.51 in injection molded plaques, and 4.23 in cast films. This investigation sought to determine the cause of process-induced variation in the dielectric constant between injection molded and cast film extruded LCP. The complex thermomechanical environment present during processing of LCPs creates a through-thickness hierarchical structure, simplified in this study as a skin and core layer. The volume fraction of skin layer of the post-processed LCP was determined to be the differentiating factor, and responsible for the difference in dielectric constant between the injection molding and cast film extrusion processes. The resulting dielectric constant is a function of this volume fraction with a near linear relationship.

This paper highlights the advantages of developing tailings storage facility-specific water balances. A case study illustrates how such focused analysis provides clearer insights into water storage and release, supporting improved conservation, regulatory compliance, and enhanced stability of tailings storage facilities. A robust water balance informed by up-to-date hydraulic data is essential for long term management. It is proposed that tailings storage facility-specific water balances should be regarded as standard practice in mining.

Ti5Si3/TiC composite has been successfully prepared from the titanium-rich slag/SiO2/C mixtures precursors by an electrochemical process. The electrochemical production process was carried out in molten CaCl2 salt at 1000 °C and 3.8 V. A pressed cylindrical pellet of titanium-rich slag/SiO2/C mixtures served as a cathode, and a solid oxide oxygen-ion-conducting membrane (SOM) tube filled with carbon-saturated liquid tin acted as an anode. The phase transformation of the cathode pellets during electrolysis process was investigated, the microstructure of the obtained products was characterized. It is found that the reaction pathways can be divided into three main stages during the electro-reduction process. The first stage is the generation of calcium compound, the second stage is the electrochemical reduction of the compound, and the third stage is the formation of Ti5Si3/TiC composite. The prepared Ti5Si3/TiC composite exhibits homogenous and nodular particle morphology.

A 3-D mathematical model was developed for the batch reactor of low temperature aluminum electrowinning using ionic liquid electrolytes. This model describes the deposition process by incorporating the mass transport of participating ionic species, homogeneous chemical reactions within the diffusion layer, and the associated electrochemical kinetics. Processing parameters, current and potential distribution, species concentration, fluid flow distribution, and electrode spacing were evaluated for the optimal reactor performance. The results indicated that the electrode spacing significantly affects the electrolyte fluid flow and current density distribution. The parallel electrode configuration (in line with electrolyte inlet) improved the convection and resulted in uniform current density distribution and electrolyte fluid flow. However, for this electrode configuration, electroactive species distribution was most favorable between the electrodes. Perpendicular configuration of electrodes resulted in a more non-uniform fluid flow within electrolyte domain, and it has a potential to cause non-uniform deposits. Aluminum electrowinning experiments were conducted using batch reactor at 80 °C, electrolyte flow rate of 5–20 ml/min, and applied cell voltage of 3–3.5 V. Good agreement was obtained between the model and the batch aluminum electrowinning experimental results.

This study aims to investigate the effect of combined mechanical and ultrasonic milling on the size reduction of talc. Firstly, the talc sample was wet ground in a stirred media mill for five different times (30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 min), and the optimum result was subsequently achieved with treatment by ultrasonication. The effects of amplitude (20, 35, and 50 μm), solid content (2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10%), and sonication time (60, 120, and 240 min) on the sizes of the final product were investigated. The pre-milling by wet grinding caused a decrease in the grinding resistance of talc. Sequential ultrasonic treatment, which was applied to the talc sample, generated smaller particles in comparison to those acquired by stirred media milling alone. Experimental results were assessed based on the product particle size (d10, d50), reduction ratio, and specific energy consumption. Submicron particles prepared by ultrasonic treatment were perfectly stable compared to stirred media milling alone as investigated in terms of particle size. In addition, the effects of mechanical and ultrasonic milling on structural properties of talc particles were characterized by XRD analysis.

Based on the placement of lead and its consumption in industry branches, the paper deals with the composition of lead in the massive of Kopaonik. Removal, tenuity and grinding of galenit. The paper in particular treats the flotation process, and also treats physico-chemical bases of reagents in the process, as well as decanting, drying, filtering and storage of concentrates. Verification of the chemical composition of Pb concentrates with Pb, Zn, Bi, As, Sb, In, Au, Ag, etc. It is special that in Kopaonik massive the ratio of Pb: Zn composition is 1.4:1.0 and during the flotation lead is inclined to go with pirotines concentrate more than is allowed. We are strongly focused to maximally decrease the Pb amount that goes with pirotine concentrates and wastes. The paper as such gave the first effects in optimizing of these parameters with positive effects in flotation process in Trepca.

"SUMMARY Taru-Toge tunnel is being constructed using drilling-blasting technique as a part of expressway project connecting Shin-Tomei Expressway and Chuo Expressway at the boundary of Shizuoka and Yamanashi Prefectures in the Central Japan. The maximum overburden is about 400 m. The authors have been carrying out a monitoring program to measure dynamic and multi-parameter responses of tunnel during and soon after the blasting operations using a multi-parameter monitoring system (Acoustic Emissions (AE), Electric Potential (EP), Temperature (T), Humidity (H) and Air Pressure (P)) and stand-alone type compact accelerometers developed by the first author. The measured response involves dynamic vibrations and other measurable parameters caused by blasting as well as by stress-redistribution around the tunnel face. This is one of the first attempts in the world to measure the response of rock mass caused by blasting at a very close vicinity of the tunnel face. In this paper, the authors present the outcomes of this unique monitoring study on the dynamic responses of the Taru-Toge tunnel during excavation and discuss their implications in actual applications. INTRODUCTION The real time monitoring of the stability of tunnels are of great importance when tunnels are prone to failure during excavation such as rockbursting or squeezing (i.e. Aydan et al. 1993, 2001). Experimental studies by the authors showed that rock indicates distinct variations of multi-parameters during deformation and fracturing processes (i.e. Mizutani et al. 1976; Aydan and Daido 2002; Aydan et al. 2003, 2011). These may be used for the real-time assessment of the stability of rock structures. An application of this approach was done to the Taru-toge tunnel a part of expressway project connecting Shin-Tomei Expressway and Chuo Expressway at the boundary of Shizuoka and Yamanashi Prefectures in the Central Japan (Imazu et al. 2015). The parameters measured involve electric potential variations, acoustic emissions, rock temperature, temperature and humidity of the tunnel in addition to the measurements of convergence and loads on support members during the face advance."

THIS paper gives the composition of the iron and slag at different stages in the "air-furnace" process of preparing "hard metal," or white cast-iron, for conversion into malleable cast-iron by annealing. The details of the process are given in an appendix. One of us had been trying for years to work some chemist of some of our malleable-iron works up to a degree of enthusiasm which would lead him to make such au investigation. It would have had the advantage of the greater familiarity with the conditions which one habitually on the spot must have. Failing in this, he made use of an opportunity which presented itself of taking samples here represented, with such fairness as the conditions permitted, holding firmly that a rough approximation to the truth is better than the complete lack of data, or that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. We hope that this attempt may stimulate others effectively to duplicate this work, and thus correct or confirm it. Our results are shown in Table I. and graphically in Figs. 1 and 2. Discussion.-At the time when the first two samples were taken, the metal and slag were still too sluggish to permit fair sampling, and not until sample 6 were the conditions really favorable, because at the time of the fourth sample the metal was not fully melted, and even at the time of sample 5 it was still sluggish. Indeed, the slag was probably very heterogeneous throughout, because it took up silica and alumina rapidly from the bottom, and because it was so siliceous as to be sluggish at this relatively low temperature. (communication to the Secretary) : I wish to thank Mr. Webster for the copious quotations he has made from my writings, as he has given nearly all the arguments I wish to advance. It is necessary to note, however, his statement that most of his experiments were made on universal-mill plates, and that these were not subject to my condemnation of irregularity. I think this is a mistake. It is well known that universal-mill plates are finished under very different conditions of temperature, with the express purpose of regulating the tensile strength. This is a perfectly legitimate practice; but it renders almost worthless any calculations on the relations of the chemical and physical equations when the influence of such finishing is omitted. Another important point Mr. Webster has not answered at all. I have shown by an excerpt from his own table that two entirely different formulæ may be constructed; and it is undeniable that one is as valid as the other, since Mr. Webster started with no premise at all save an assumption that the effect of carbon was constant. This was an assumption pure and simple, and hence has no special virtue. The whole result of Mr. Webster's investigation is not that the effect of carbon is a constant, and that those of phosphorus and manganese are variables. On the contrary, there are two answers, with nothing to show which is right. We learn that if carbon is a constant, then phosphorus and manganese are variables; but that if phosphorus and manganese are constants, then carbon is a variable. This is a distinct advance over complete ignorance, but it is not final and satisfactory from either a mathematical or metallurgical standpoint. Low-grade ore bodies, increase in rock competency, finely disseminated valuable minerals in the ore bodies, ore variability and water scarcity are among the technical challenges faced by the mining industry. These challenges have increased the business risk, capital investment and operating cost of the mining projects. Since the last 20 years, many large-scale concentrators have been built to cope with the above-mentioned challenges. Comminution, especially the fine grinding is an energy-intensive process. For example, the ball mill has a limitation in the fine grinding regime where the energy consumption increases exponentially when the product size is below 45 µm. The industry has been seeking for solutions that have a minimum risk and total cost of ownership. The stirred milling technology such as the TowerMill is well accepted by the industry as it has demonstrated the attributes required for fine grinding. TowerMill is a matured technology that has been adopted since the 80s for regrinding duty. Recently, this technology was installed in secondary and tertiary grinding duty to prepare a finer feed to rougher flotation. Four units of TowerMills were installed in a magnetite concentrator in Western Australia in tertiary grinding duty. Recently, Nippon Eirich has conducted process performance evaluation on the TowerMill circuit. The outcome of the exercise had indicated that the circuit is consuming 3.4 kWh/t to reduce from 55 µm to 35 µm with a narrow product size distribution. The effect of operating variables such as the specific energy, grinding media size, mill content % solids and mill feed configuration on the grinding efficiency were evaluated at the plant scale. Furthermore, the scale-up methodology was validated. The scope of this paper includes the performances of TowerMill and the validation of scale-up methodology.

As an alternative to the conventional flotation method, there has been continual research in an effort to enhance base metal ores and combustibles recovery using ultrasonics. These studies however were largely limited to the pre-treatment of ores for the removal of surface contaminants while the effect of ultrasonics on the bubble and pulp-phase interactions remained somewhat unexplored. Noting this deficiency, this study aimed to investigate the mechanistic effect of an ultrasonic field in an impeller less flotation cell specifically focusing on the bubble-particle interaction dynamics. A lab-scale flotation cell (capacity 1 litre) was designed, involving a vertically oriented ultrasonic probe (20 kHz, rated at 1.2 kW) and operated in the output power range from 1 to 20% with continuous liquid recirculation. Particle suspension was achieved by the combined action of recirculation and ultrasonic pulses. Interactions of coarse size glass ballotini particles (D32 = 314 μm) with bubbles (< 1 mm diameter) in the presence of a surfactant were studied, using high-speed imaging. Application of an ultrasonic pulse in the aqueous medium resulted in the generation of numerous microbubbles which increased with increasing input power and duration of the ultrasonic pulse time. Such periodic pulses introduced at a high level of turbulence in the pulp phase facilitated adequate bubble-particle contacts. Microbubbles played a key role in forming particle clusters which were observed to be floatable even in the absence of any carrier bubbles. When carrier bubbles were introduced, some of these particle clusters attached to the bubble surface and conveniently floated. It was noted that a favourable state of bubble-particle interaction was achievable to produce stable bubble-particles aggregates by suitably controlling the input power and period of the applied ultrasonic pulse. Geochemical data from drill core samples is used in mineral exploration to enable geologists to understand subsurface geology. However, it is challenging to analyse these data sets rigorously and consistently. Manual data interpretation relies on the knowledge and experience of logging geologists. When multiple geologists are involved, it is possible to introduce inconsistencies in logged lithology type and scale of logging (‘splitters’ versus ‘lumpers’). Machine learning (ML) is a powerful tool for analysing high dimensional data (ie data with many variables) and large data sets (ie data with many samples). However, ML methods applied to drill hole samples do not incorporate spatial information and this can result in high misclassification rates and small-scale ‘noisy’ results. We demonstrate the use of multiscale spatial analysis (wavelet tessellation) as a pre-ML step to analyse spatial information. This step helps reduce misclassification and filter out unwanted small-scale variation in the data. In an experiment, we used wavelet tessellation and supervised ML to predict litho-geochemical rock types from geochemistry data. The data set is from the Valhalla uranium deposit near Mount Isa, northern Queensland. First, geochemical knowledge and statistical analysis was used to select appropriate geochemical elements for litho-geochemical classification. Second, the elements were processed using multiscale spatial analysis. Third, we trained a Random Forest model with the data set and found that the model performs worse in predicting rare rock samples than common ones. We applied over-sampling and down-sampling methods in aim to overcome this issue. As a conclusion, the combination of multiscale spatial analysis (to define rock unit boundaries) and Random Forests (to classify rock units) is a good method for rapid and accurate analysis of drill hole geochemistry.

Sections 120 and 121 of Article XI. Fire Control, of a proposed Mine Safety Law in preparation, to be used as desired and when approved by any State, contains these provisions: After the adoption of these regulations, no mine operator shall erect any nonfireproof structure within 50 feet of any mine entrance. or airway. Every operating mine having nonfireproof structures within 50 feet of any mine entrance or airway, except headframes necessary for hoisting, shall have such structures fireproofed or removed and replaced with fireproof structures within six months of the adoption of these regulations. Before reopening, mines idle at the time of the adoption of these regulations shall have all non- fireproof structures fireproofed, removed, or replaced with fire- proof structures as required by the foregoing sentence. Upon receipt of the written statement of a mine operator that the fireproofing of existing structures is impracticable, the chief mining engineer (of the State commission) shall satisfy himself as to the abouracy of the statement. If he concurs that fireproofing is impracticable, and if at the same time he holds the opinion that adequate protection can be provided otherwise by such procedure, he shall have authority to issue a written permit for the substitution of fireproof door at or near portals of mine openings and collars: of shafts. Such doors shall fit as nearly gas-tight as possible. and shall be installed in such a way that the mouths of mine open- ings can be closed readily from outside of structures. The effec- tiveness of such permit may be made contingent upon the operator's continued compliance with any additional precautions which are necessary in the chief mining engineer's opinion to protect the lives of miners.

"The empirical approach for pillar design assumes that geological conditions should be perfect, such as horizontal seams, and that pillar strength and behavior will only depend on the coal seam strength and the vertical pressure caused by the overburden thickness on the coal seam; this vertical pressure is based on the tributary area. Empirical methods do not consider the effect of the interface between the roof and pillar or the floor and pillar.The effect of the interface shear strength on final coal pillar strength has been studied since the 1960s. However, few case studies have been generated from that, especially in shallow underground coal mining (less than 100 meters). This case study involves a mining section at the 101 coal mine in the Santa Catarina state of Brazil, which is experiencing pillar rib spalling and yielding because of a 1-to 2-cm-thick clay layer at the area of contact between the coal seam and immediate roof. The depth of the coal seam is 60 m on average and 2.3 m in height. This particular section also has 12-14% (7-8°) of seam inclination. The pillar size varies from l lxll to 13xl2m; thus, the safety factor (SF) based on the ARMPS approach is more than 1.5. The objective of this paper is to determine the cause of the pillar yielding and study the effect of the clay layer at the interface between the roof and pillar, including the inclination of the coal seam. This study conducted empirical and numerical models (2D and 3D) to understand the effect of the thin clay layer. The conclusion is that the clay layer affected the strength of the interface between roof and pillar, causing rib spalling and reducing the pillar strength.INTRODUCTIONPillar stability and deformation depends on the coal seam strength and vertical pressure caused by the overburden thickness on the coal seam, and this vertical pressure is based on the tributary area.
