Recent updates to Australian industry guidelines emphasise the importance of the assessment of liquefaction potential of tailings. This includes assessment of the cyclic liquefaction potential, and the post-seismic strength of tailings expected to undergo strength loss from seismic loading. Despite this increase in focus, a relatively small number of Australian tailings appear to have been characterised through cyclic and post-cyclic testing. This paper presents the cyclic characterisation of four Australian tailings, consisting of iron ore, lateritic nickel, vanadium and bauxite residue. Material was obtained either from surficial tube sampling or through remoulding samples in the laboratory from slurries. Testing consisted of monotonic, cyclic and post-cyclic tests for each material. For three of the materials, laboratory-scale shear vane testing was also performed to provide a comparison to post-cyclic strengths from direct simple shear.The results indicated cyclic resistances consistent with the results of other tailings presented in the literature. The lateritic nickel tailings provided the greatest cyclic resistance of the four materials tested, followed by the vanadium tailings. This was somewhat consistent with expectations for material behaviour based on index properties. Post-cyclic strengths were seen to decrease as cyclic strains increased, consistent with typical observations in the literature. Following significant cyclic straining, in some instances the post-cyclic strengths approached those obtained through residual shear vane testing. This provides further insight into the strain-dependent nature of post-cyclic strengths for some materials. "Longwall mining has a significant influence on gas wells located within longwall chain pillars. Subsurface subsidence and abutment pressure induced by longwall mining can cause excessive stresses and deformations in gas well casings. If the gas well casings are compromised or ruptured, natural gas could migrate into the mine workings, potentially causing a fire or explosion. By the current safety regulations, the gas wells in the chain pillars have to be either plugged or protected by adequate coal pillars. The current regulations for the gas well pillar design are based on the 1957 Pennsylvania gas well pillar study. The study provided guidelines for gas well pillars by considering their support area and overburden depth as well as the location of the gas wells within the pillars. As the guidelines were developed for room-and-pillar mining under shallow cover, they are no longer applicable to modern longwall mining, particularly under deep cover. Gas well casing failures have occurred even though the chain pillars for the gas wells met the requirements by the 1957 study.This study presents seven cases of conventional gas wells penetrating through longwall chain pillars in the Pittsburgh coal seam. The study indicates that overburden depth and pillar size are not the only determining factors for gas well stability. The other important factors also include subsurface ground movement, overburden geology, and weak floor, as well as the construction of gas wells. Numerical modeling was used to model abutment pressure, subsurface deformations, and the response of gas well casings. The study demonstrated that numerical models are able to predict with reasonable accuracy the subsurface deformations in the overburden above, within, and below the chain pillars, and the potential location and modes of gas well failures, therefore providing a more quantifiable approach to assess the stability of the gas wells in longwall chain pillars.INTRODUCTIONIn the eastern United States, abundant gas wells have been drilled through coal seams that are being actively mined by longwall mining. The existence of gas wells in the U.S. coal fields, whether active or abandoned, have caused many issues for longwall mining. First of all, any gas well in the mining area has to be located by all possible means. Secondly, the gas wells within longwall panels have to be plugged, as cutting through gas wells will allow natural gas to flow into the active longwall mines. On the other hand, the gas wells within longwall chain pillars or barrier pillars can be left in place if the wells are protected by properly designed pillars."

Manufacturers of brick and tile are showing growing interest in the possibility of manufacture of a clay bonded block. The block would have the shape of concrete block, but would be made without the use of Portland cement, Instead, the block would be made' from mixtures' of an aggregate and the present raw materials of the brick industry. The finished units would weigh 20 to 30 pounds and meet the specifications for Grade A concrete block. The present status of the clay block development shows one manufacturer actually in production of these units$, two additional manufacturers are attempting production and many manufacturers are actively engaged in development work. At least four major research laboratories are engaged in the development program. There are several different processes available for clay block production. These processes differ primarily in the type of aggregate used or in the type of forming operation selected. I would like summarize these possible methods.

This paper is one of a series being published by the Bureau of Mines on milling methods and costs. It describes briefly the procedure followed in concentrating hübnerite or? at the Ima tungsten mine, Lemhi County, Idaho. In October 1911 the Ima mill was utilizing combined gravity-concentration, flotation, and magnetic-separation units for the recovery of a tungsten concentrate and a pyritic silver concentrate approximately 120 tons of ore averaging 0.5 percent W03 is treated daily. The concentrates produced average 66 to 67 percent WO3.

"This paper presents an analysis of preliminary tests on the effect of in-situ and operating parameters on fragmentation of coal using a specially designed unique automated rotary coal cutting simulator (ARCCS). In these tests coal blocks with an approximate dimension of 18 in. x 15 in. x 6 in. (45.7 cm x 38.l cm x 15.2 cm) were first. subjected to confining pressures, equivalent to in-situ conditions. Such. blocks were then cut by the cutting head of the ARCCS, thus simulating the action of the continuous miner in underground coal mining. During the tests under a particular set of in-situ and operating parameters a number of other parameters such as 1) penetration of bit into coal, 2) penetration resistance (thrust and cutting pressures), 3) rotating velocity of cutting head, and 4) acoustic emission activity in the coal block were monitored. After each cutting cycle the fractured surfaces were photographed and a velocity survey was conducted by using a sonic technique. At the end of each experiment the cutting paths of the bits in coal were photographed using an optical microscope with a camera attached to it. Furthermore, the coal fragments were collected in bags using a vacuum cleaner. These fragments were then sieved for size distribution analysis. The results of the preliminary tests indicated that underground coal cutting can be simulated in the laboratory and the effects of the important parameters, i.e. operating and in-situ parameters, can be studied successfully. INTRODUCTIONThe continuous-mining machines which were introduced in the 1950's now account for more than half the production of coal from underground mines. Unfortunately, these continuous miners, which were designed for increased productivity, have also increased the concentration of respirable dust in mines. As a result, the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was enacted to enforce on the coal operators that the airborne respirable dust not exceed 2 mg/m3, and was intended to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis. This plus the other aspects of the legislation and the subsequent monitoring and enforcement by MSHA made it very imperative that the coal operators provide a relatively healthier and safer working environment for the coal miners. Since 1970, the Federal government has paid over 11.7 billion dollars to more than 470,000 miners with coal workers pneumoconiosis and their survivors (1). These regulations, coupled with the assessment of the continuing burden on miners, the mining industry and taxpayers appear to have provided an impetus for the mining .community towards comprehending the different parameters that influence dust generation and entrainment."

Back injuries arising from such activities as lifting and handling objects have been and continue to be constant and undiminishing hazards of the occupational environment. Back pain in one form or another is experienced by almost a1 1 individuals. During the past 30 years, a great deal of accident prevention education has been directed toward the reduction of back injuries. However, it has not produced any great change in the incidence of the injury. The human spine remains the most vulnerable area of the muscul o-skeleta1 system. Back injuries account for about 400,000, or 18 percent, of all disabling work related injuries each year according to the National Safety Council estimates. These serious back injuries are estimated to have cost more than 1.9 billion dollars in 1976 in medical and lost time pay. 1

This report is volume 1 of an eleven-volume final report for a Grant completed by The Pennsylvania State University for the Bureau of Mines to develop a dynamic general purpose computer simulation model for underground coal mining. The simulator developed under the Grant has a wide range of possible applications in the design and evaluation of underground coal mining systems from the standpoints of health and safety, productivity, and mine environment. The Master Design Simulator consists of nine free-standing function-oriented subsystem models linked together into an integrated, comprehensive model of an entire mining system. The subsystems comprising the Master Design Simulator include geology and reserves, methane generation, roof support, subsidence, production, rail haulage, cost, water generation, and ventilation. This volume of the final report contains a statement of the purpose and scope of work of the Grant, and provides an overview of the Master Design Simulator with a brief description of each subsystem. Also included is a discussion of several areas of application for the simulator.

Mount Isa Mines Limited operates one of the worldÆs largest underground mines in North West Queensland. ItÆs mining and smelting complex produces copper anode, crude lead bullion (containing silver), and zinc concentrate. Copper is recovered in the Copper Concentrator from chalcopyrite ore, converter smelter slag and rotary holding furnace (RHF) slag via grinding and flotation operations. During 2002 a project to optimise cleaner circuit capacity was commenced. Its aims were to minimise copper losses and minimise slag/chalcopyrite cross contamination by reconfiguring existing flotation equipment and the addition of new flotation capacity. To minimise cross contamination a Jameson Cell was installed and dedicated to cleaning of slag concentrates, which had formerly been conducted by three flotation columns operating in series. The flotation columns were re-configured to operate in parallel and dedicated to upgrading chalcopyrite concentrate. In addition a Jameson Cell was installed to reject entrained copper from a prefloat concentrate consisting of talc and carbonaceous pyrite. This paper discusses the logic behind the cleaner circuit expansion, recent test work relating to the Jameson Cell and the installation and commissioning phases. Difficulties relating to the commissioning are reviewed and the solutions to problems are highlighted. The benefits the reconfigured circuit has provided to Mount Isa Mines are also discussed.

This paper examines the fire life systems implemented in two existing tunnels and discusses whether the standards used were appropriate. It focuses on the Terrace Tunnel as this upgrade and refurbishment is complete.The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) manages six tunnels on the State Highway network with two of these built in the last seven years. The Terrace Tunnel, opened in 1978, was refurbished with modern fire life safety systems in 2010–2012. An interim upgrade of the Mt Victoria Tunnel, opened in 1931, was also carried out at this time.In present times, few existing tunnels have undergone significant upgrades and refurbishments. The Terrace Tunnel required: new power supplies, control buildings, lighting, wall panels and jet fans, a deluge system, emergency exit lights and way-finding lights, a public address (PA) system, a radio rebroadcast system, lane control sign (LCS) and variable message sign (VMS), an over-height detection system (OHD) and a new tunnel management system.In the absence of suitable guidelines, various standards were used to carry out the refurbishment. The Austroad Guide to Road Tunnels and AS4825 Tunnel Fire Safety, although designed for new tunnels and not specifically intended for existing tunnels, provided a framework. A multi-criteria assessment of risk (MCAT) was carried out to determine the systems to be provided.The Terrace Tunnel has perhaps set a benchmark for refurbishing existing tunnels as few projects of this type have been completed recently. In these days, however, such a definition is not detailed enough.The modern science of metallurgy is based on two fundamental sciences, physics .and chemistry, and is sub-divided into two major fields: Process Metallurgy and Physical Metallurgy. These fields of metallurgy are now so comprehensive and involved that even the graduate metallurgist has to specialize in one or the other.In recent years, the relatively new science or technology of non• destructive testing has also entered the industrial scene, with tremendous impact and ramifications. So much so that, certainly, no .discussion on metallurgy can be complete without including some reference to it.Obviously, one paper cannot hope to cover in detail the relationship of the whole science of metallurgy to the mining industry. Consequently, only a very brief reference will be made to the field of Process Metallurgy, our major concern being with Physical Metallurgy and Non-Destructive Testing."

In developing countries throughout the world, gold ores are being processed by mercury amal-gamation, a technique long banned in the U.S. - unless a retort operation is used for mercury recovery - due to mercury toxicity and its effects on the environment. Amalgamation is a simple process that involves contacting a ground, slurried concentrate or ore with mercury in a slightly agitated vessel, usually for several hours, The amalgamated mercury is separated by gravity and then filtered through a fine cloth to collect the gold amalgam as a sponge, which is then fired to remove the final remnants of mercury and produce high quality gold. However, in Peru and other developing countries in South America and throughout the world, tailings are simply discarded into uncontrolled drainages and ponds and the sponge is fired in the open air. Clearly, in this case, environmental friendly and, to make matters worse, is typically conducted by family members of all ages without proper protection. Furthermore, the technique is inefficient, yielding approximately 50% gold recovery. For the past two years, faculty members from Montana Tech in Butte, MT, USA and the Universidad Nactonal del Altiplano in Puno, Peru have teamed to study the La Rinconada Mine Complex located in southern Peru approximately 100 kilometers north of Lake Titicaca and 25 kilometers west of Bolivia. The mining complex is over 5,000 meters above sea level and exists at the foot of a receding glacier in the Andes Mountains. A suite of soil and water samples collected in 2001 documented extensive Hg contamination in the Rinconada area [1]. The present paper summa¬rizes a follow-up investigation in July-2002, in which water samples were collected at numerous locations along the 200 km length of the Rio Ramis, from the Rinconada mine com¬plex to Lake Titicaca, In addition, we report new results of Hg analyses of fish from Lake Titi¬caca, The results of this study have relevance to safety and health concerns for the miners as well as people in downstream communities.

The Rio Tinto (Mount Bruce Mining Pty Ltd) Koodaideri Iron Ore Project is located approximately 110 km north-west of Newman in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. During detailed ecological studies of the project area, a significant maternity roost (containing around 430 individuals) of the Orange Leaf-nosed Bat (OLNB) (Rhinonicteris aurantius) was discovered within the boundaries of the proposed mining area. The OLNB is listed as Vulnerable under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and is listed as a Schedule 1 species under the Western Australian Wildlife Conservation Act 1950.With a good understanding of blast vibration attenuation in the Pilbara’s different geologies and in the absence of other known studies, it was considered that appropriate buffer distances between mining and bat colonies were not scientifically determined. Therefore, to inform the environmental approvals process that was underway, a series of seismic blasts was planned to assess and measure the sensitivity of the OLNB to trial-sized seismic blasting activities to develop a more scientifically based buffer zone for the protection of the OLNB. This was to be achieved by testing ground attenuation of the site and measuring any response from the OLNB to the firing of seismic charges. Rio Tinto sought the independent expertise of ecological consultants to evaluate and participate in the work to quantify the level of sensitivity of the bat colony and to outline the proposal to government authorities.After detailed risk assessment and project mapping, the seismic blasts were implemented, with the aim of firing individual charged and measured vector peak particle velocity (VPPV) at the OLNB roost cave, combined with monitoring OLNB disturbance activity within the roost that was invoked by the blasts. A series of six charges were fired with the VPPV ranging from 0.66 mms-1 to 18.70 mms-1. The OLNB activity was monitored using high frequency microphones, which detect bat calls emitted during flight. Under daytime conditions, the bats would normally be dormant, so the null hypothesis was for no calls to be detected if the bats displayed no disturbance behaviour. This work has improved understanding of mining activities (blasting) on the OLNB species, assisting in establishing mining exclusion zones that are based on scientific data, contributing to a sustainable future for both the environment and the mining industry.CITATION:Martin, D, 2015. A study has been undertaken into mine ventilation systems currently in use within Australian modern coal longwall (LW) extraction mines. It reviews systems and discusses evolving changes being adopted to address the more complex challenges. There is a strong move to longer panels, wider faces, greater extraction heights, increased production rates, more efficient ventilation and decreased personnel. Each of these changes is motivated by improvement in productivity and generally leads to cost reduction. In addition, mine workings are moving deeper, which results in increased ventilation control issues such as higher total and respirable dust levels, greater seam gas contents in parallel with lower in situ permeabilities, spontaneous combustion and heat management issues. A comprehensive database of Australian LW ventilation practice is analysed. Currently there are a variety of LW panel ventilation circuits used in Australian underground coal mines due to various combinations of seam characteristics, gas emission rates, spontaneous combustion, geological features and surface constraints. The main issues usually addressed in the designing and planning of ventilation circuits for LW panels are airway velocity, gas concentrations, LW cutting methods (eg Bi-di, Uni-di or half web), ventilation of control devices, pressure differentials and leakage paths and understanding gas concentrations across the length and width of the goaf. If the ventilation circuit can manage the applied contaminant load (gases, heat and dust) at an acceptable cost and circuit duty, then supplementary controls, such as gas drainage, refrigeration and dust sprays and scrubbers, may not be required. A bench-scale method for recovering lead and zinc from slimes and mill tailings from the Tri-State District of Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas was developed by the Bureau of Mines. Dilute hydrochloric acid, containing sodium chloride, and chlorine gas were used to decompose the mineral constituents. Lead was electrolyzed from the pregnant acid solution, and zinc was precipitated from the depleted electrolyte by neutralization with lime. Up to 98 percent of the lead was recovered in an impure lead electro- deposit assaying approximately 85 percent lead. Zinc recoveries up to 90 percent of the total were attained in a precipitate assaying approximately 40 percent zinc.

According to the scientific views formed by the middle of nineteen seventies there should be no possibility of commercial diamondiferous kimberlites in the north of the west European platform. However a later analysis of the geological data gave rise to the concept that diamond bearing kimberlites would be present in the north but on the mineralogical level they would differ from kimberlites of South Africa and Yakutia. Further investigations resulted in the confirmation of these conclusions and with discovery at the beginning of 1980 of diamond bearing kimberlite pipes in the Arkhangelsk region.

A research project incorporating a number of mine site exercises to reduce the effects of fire incidents and possible consequent health and safety hazards has been undertaken focused on the application of mine fire simulation software packages for contaminate tracing and fire modelling in coal and metalliferous mines. This paper examines aspects of introduction of inert gases to underground workings to aid recovery of a mine following a fire. Broad conclusions from work undertaken at individual Australian coal mines are discussed as examples. The effort is built around the introduction of the fire simulation computer program æVentgraphÆ to the Australian mining industry and the consequent modelling of fire scenarios in selected different mine layouts. Case studies have been developed to examine usage of inertisation units and particularly application of the GAG jet engine unit. One example has focused on selection of the best surface portal location for placement of the GAG for most efficient suppression of a fire. A second has examined a situation with significant seam gas being emitted on the face. This has shown that under certain face dip angles stopping the mine surface fan to reduce dilution of GAG exhaust gases will cause reversal of face air and consequent mine explosion as gas laden air is drawn across a fire. A third examines inertisation and dilution issues in mains headings. mains headings present a complex ventilation network with often numerous parallel headings, hundreds of cut-throughs and a variety of ventilation control devices. In such a complex system (with additional interference from a fire), maintaining control of the movement of inert gas is more difficult than elsewhere in the mine. Some illustrations of this issue are given.

A simplified economic model is derived for the financial return from a new gold mining project. The model is used to analyze the effects of changes in the mining rate, capital costs, working costs, value of the reef and the stoping width. The most effective avenues for improving the return from a new project are indicated. It is shown that those technological innovations which would improve the return significantly, and therefore make it possible to open more mines, are the use of smaller mines, means for improving the mining rate to capital costs ratio for smaller mines, planning and control of mines by computer simulation, an improved mine valuation procedure and means for mining at a decreased stope tramming width.
