Metallurgical Accounting in the mineral processing industry transforms accumulated process data, including flow rates and assays, into a coherent information format. This is used to rapidly provide production reporting and key performance indications. A fully comprehensive and coherency of available data must be a component of any system expected to accomplish reconciliation in the mass balancing process. Quality issues are thus improved with such desired methods via a mass-balancing engine utilizing the results of measurements acquired by various on-line sensors, analyzers, and sophisticated laboratory equipment. Metallurgical Accounting, when accomplished through such an engine, provides high value information in a simple, straightforward, and simplified manner. Exceptional utility is then transparently available to authorized personnel for access to metallurgical accounting reports, production reports, mass balance results, performance indicators, and so on. This paper discusses how such information can be used to "drilldown" into each result set by consulting the data hierarchy to evaluate and validate calculations and input data used to produce the specific results being queried. The power of such a system resides in the full and true integration of all production and laboratory data. What is integrated are the data thus acquired via a single user interface, a single database, a single configuration tool, etc. From this comes the derivation of contextual information and its maintenance. It is possible to reduce metallurgical accounting and production reporting from possibly hours or even days to a matter of minutes. The result is maximization of information reliability and availability from masses of otherwise discrete and difficult to access key data.

INTRODUCTION THE history of copper metallurgy in Japan goes back into remote ages, of this there is abundant proof, and that the working of this metal is closely connected with the artistic development of this nation is evidenced by some of the glorious monuments which have been produced by these ancient metal workers. The traveler sees to-clay in a perfect state of preservation bronze statues 150 ft. high, and over, 300 ft. in width, and 170 ft. in depth, delicately chased and beautifully marked, and when one reflects that some of them date back to the eighth century A. D., the question naturally suggests itself, how did these ancient metallurgists with their crude and primitive appliances accomplish this stupendous task? The bodies of these images are formed of bronze castings 10 to 12 in. thick, which were gradually built up and soldered together, but other pieces of magnitude, like the heads and other portions of the body are single castings. In many cases another method of construction must have been adopted. The walls of the molds were gradually built up and as the lower portion of the castings cooled, the walls were raised higher and higher and fresh metal must have been added, instead of constructing the whole mold first and then making the casting in one piece. There are still traces of substantial gilding visible on these statues, and how the pious Buddhist priests who were the constructors of them got the precious metal, is preserved in legendary tales.

The mine operated by the United Verde Copper Co. is situated near Jerome, Ariz., on the eastern flank of the Black Hills, at an elevation of approximately 5500 ft. (1676 m.) above sea level. The mine and the town of Jerome are located on a steep hillside, which slopes rapidly to the valley of the Verde River. The smelter town of Clarkdale is situated in the Verde valley 4.1 mi. (6.5 km.) distant in an air line from Jerome, and at an elevation of 3560 ft. The two towns are connected by the standard-gage railroad of the Verde Tunnel & Smelter R. R., a subsidiary of the United Verde Copper Co. This road is 11 mi. long and has a compensated 4 per cent. grade. At Clarkdale, it connects with the Verde Valley branch of the Santa Fe R. R. The narrow-gage (36-in.) line of the United Verde & Pacific Ry. was, until 1919, Jerome's only rail connection with a main trunk line. This road connects with a branch line of the Santa Fe system at Jerome Junction, after traversing 26 mi. of mountainous country. From the time of its location, in 1876, until its purchase by Senator W. A. Clark, of Montana, in 1889, the United Verde mine was worked on a small scale and shipments of high-grade gold-silver ore were made from the surface workings. "The problem of crud in solvent extraction is well known and can be a major handicap and operational issue. Colloidal silica can cause a number of problems including interfering with flocculation, initiating crud formation in solvent extraction (SX), decreasing SX extraction kinetics and increasing SX phase disengagement times. Flocculation can be utilized to remove some of the troublesome particulates but colloidal silica does not flocculate well and presents a different problem requiring innovative chemistry to solve. Coagulants can assist by facilitating the removal of this colloidal silica by promoting the agglomeration of the particles to a size which can be more readily settled or flocculated in solid/liquid separations. This is achieved when the coagulants bind to the surfaces, displacing water and destabilizing the colloids, whereupon they bind to each other which facilitate their amenability to conventional flocculation.INTRODUCTIONSilicate minerals are abundant in the upper layers of the Earth’s crust, and there are few mineral deposits without significant levels of gangue silicates. Silicate minerals include the pure silicas, such as quartz and other silicate containing minerals such as clays, chlorites, feldspars, as well a vast number of less common silicates.During the acid leaching of ores, two types of fine silica particles are released in solution from the dissolution of the host mineral. The first consists of partly depleted silicates, and the second is colloidal silica, which forms in solution. It is this second type which has the potential to cause crud formation as well as poor solution clarities, slow filter rates and excessive flocculant usage (Figure1)."

South Africa is reliant on coal for the generation of almost all the electricity used in the country, and several large industrial concerns such as Sasol are also coal based. Research relating to the mining, beneficiation and utilization of coal is important in order to ensure the optimal exploitation and use of coal within the country. The Fuel Research Institute (FRI) of South Africa was established in 1930 to investigate all aspects of coal beneficiation and utilization in South Africa. The FRI went on to conduct world-class research and in 1957 a pilot coal preparation plant was constructed in Pretoria to enable large-scale practical experimentation. The pilot plant played a pivotal role in the establishment of South Africa?s low ash coal export project. Political and economic factors contributed to the eventual closure of the FRI and South Africa experienced a period of about 10 years between 1990 and 1999 during which very little public coal preparation research was done. This changed for the better towards the end of 1999 when Coaltech 2020, a collaborative research program was established. Participants included the CSIR, universities, the government and the major coal producers. Coal preparation research conducted under Coaltech thus far include dewatering and drying of fine coal, size classification of ultra-fine coal and dense-medium fine coal beneficiation. Currently, the Coaltech focus is on the beneficiation of low-grade coal reserves and is investigating existing as well as new techniques that can be utilized to provide cost-effective beneficiation of low-grade raw coals and reject coals.

Earlier work revealed that small amounts of silver (< 0,l at. pct) may exert a marked effect on the structure and aging characteristics of certain a1loys based on the Al-Zn-Mg system. Silver additions have now been made to other age-hardening aluminum alloys, and significant effects have been observed in the Al-Mg system and in several Al-Cu-Mg and Al-Mg-Si alloys. Similarities exist between the behavior of alloys from all four systems, notably that in each case silver stimulates nucleation of an intermediate precipitate which forms when the alloys are aged in the medium temperature range (-120" to 220°C). The mechanism for this effect is uncer- IT has been shown that small additions of silver (<0.1 at. pct) may have a marked effect on the structure and age-hardening characteristics of tain although it is suggested it originates in a preferred affinity between magnesium and silver atoms. There is evidence to indicate that the effects of silver are unique to that element. It is suggested that silver atoms interact with vacancies during low-temperature aging of Al-4 pct Cu and certain Al-Cu-Mg alloys. Silver had little effect on Al-8 pct Zn aged at any temperature. Preliminary observations indicate that silver may have interesting effects on the strength properties of Al-Mg alloys, md a the commercial Al-Cu-Mg alloys designated as 2024 and 2618. many alloys based on the Al-Zn-Mg* system.1"&apos;*

BRASS is an alloy of copper and zinc. The brasses (using this term to denote all useful proportions of the two constituents) are the most valuable and widely employed of all [ ] nonferrous alloys, because of their high resistance to ordinary corrosive agencies and the very wide range of properties that may be imparted to them by variations in the proportions of the constituents and by variations in mechanical treatment and heat-treatment. Fig. I shows the normal physical properties, as determined by standard tensile tests, of the series when in the annealed condition. Fig. 2 shows the effect of varying amounts of cold-working on an almost pure brass containing 70 per cent copper and 30 per cent zinc. Fig. 3 shows the effect of annealing at various temperatures on the same alloy. This effect is somewhat modi- [ ] fied by the degree of cold-working to which a brass has been subjected, as shown by Fig. 4. A fourth test, which is empirical, has been found useful because of its simplicity the hot hammer test. Samples 1/2 in. in diameter and 3/4 in. long are placed in a suitable furnace. These are withdrawn one at a time at successively higher temperatures and are subjected to the blow of a drop hammer weighing 50 lb. with a drop of 4 ft. Cast or rolled lead anodes employed in zinc electrowinning typically contain between 0.5?1.0% silver to decrease the overall corrosion rate. The production of cast lead-silver or lead-silver-calcium anodes often results in the formation of numerous holes, voids or laps in the anode surface that can initiate internal corrosion in localized areas. In rolled anodes the presence of internal porosity is significantly reduced, thus resulting in extended service life. The obtained grain structure of cast or rolled Pb-Ag anodes, however, requires a relatively long period of time to form a stable protective PbO2/MnO2 layer that can evolve oxygen without excessive lead contamination of the cathode. Therefore, these anodes are often mechanically, chemically or electrochemically conditioned prior to being placed in the electrowinning process. RSR Technologies has developed an improved anode for zinc electrowinning. The anode consists of a rolled Pb-Ag-Ca-alloy with controlled surface grain structure. The preferred calcium and silver content of the alloy is 0.05?0.08 % and 0.3?0.4%, respectively. Since May 2001, industrial-scale tests have been carried out at two zinc refineries in North America in industrial electrowinning cells. The controlled grain structure of these anodes allows forming an adherent protective oxide coating within a short period of several days when placed in an electrowinning cell without the necessity of being preconditioned. Anode sludge growth is evenly distributed. The anodes stay dimensionally stable and no short-circuits have been observed. Consequently, low corrosion rates and improved current efficiencies have been achieved.

The Tarnagulla Gold Project in Central Victoria, Australia, was developed and operated by Reef Mining NL between 1994 and early 2000, producing 53 000 ounces of gold from the Nick OÆTime Shoot, a single narrow vein shoot structure within part of the larger Poverty Reef, with a strike length ranging from 30 m to 60 m. The ore shoot was developed over a vertical interval of 190 m, using a small cross-section decline and small, mechanised equipment. Various stoping methods were employed including mechanised cut-and-fill with a single boom jumbo, hand-held mining using airleg drills and rope scrapers, and small uphole retreat stopes using a line of sight remote operated LHD to recover a crown pillar. Experience during stoping showed that airleg drilling and rope scrapers gave much better dilution control than diesel equipment. Innovations included a low-cost hydraulic fill system. Due to the small scale of the deposit, the feasibility studies, planning and permitting for the mine were based on very limited drilling information; however, the mine was brought into production within two years of the discovery. While the mine made an operating profit, it failed to fully repay capital at the low gold price then prevailing. Applying the lessons learned from the operation to optimise the access and stoping method, the project is re-examined at todayÆs gold price and operating costs. Central Victoria has the potential to host many similar small deposits. The authors were respectively Non-Executive Director and Resident Manager for Reef Mining NL when the mine was operating.

THAT metallographic structures analogous to the martensite of steel may be found in certain copper-aluminum and copper-tin alloys has been known for many years; similar structures recently were found in certain copper-zinc alloys.1 In all three of these alloy systems the martensite structures result from transformation of the metastable ß phase when the speed of cooling from the ß range is sufficiently high to suppress decomposition into equilibrium phases. ? In the normal decomposition of solid solutions into equilibrium phases, diffusion is needed to bring about the necessary changes in concentration, and the rate of reaction falls almost to zero at temperatures slightly above room temperature. The rates of reaction for martensite processes, however, are not dependent upon temperature; the transformation does not require readjustments of concentration. For example, the marten-site transformation in 60:40 (ß) copper-zinc does not begin until the temperature has dropped to about minus 30° C., and then continues down to minus 130° C. and probably even at lower temperatures.1 Further-more, martensite processes apparently proceed only while the tempera-ture is falling, within the proper range, and cease completely while the temperature is held constant; ? and they cannot be suppressed by extremely rapid cooling although the rate of cooling for some alloys may be increased to over 10,000 times the critical cooling velocity. Isaitschew, Kaminsky and Kurdjumow2 account for these observed behaviors of martensite processes by postulating that the mechanism " . . . consists in a regular rearrangement of the lattice in such a way

The leaching process of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. is based upon the solubility of oxidized copper in sulfuric acid and the solubility of sulfide copper, largely in the form of chalcocite, in ferric sulfate solution. This necessitates the carrying of a rather large amount of iron in solution. The ferric sulfate is regenerated from ferrous sulfate by the oxygen given off at the anode during electrolytic precipitation of the copper. In September, 1924, excavation was started at Inspiration, Arizona, for the construction of a plant to treat 7500 tons of ore per day. When the plant was begun, the fact developed that by a minor change in the height of the overflow on the leaching tanks, 9000 tons could be charged into each tank and treated satisfactorily. This determined the maximum capacity of the plant as 9000 tons per day. The first ore was charged in October, 1926, and there are now available the records of five complete years of operation; namely, 1927 to 1931, inclusive. The original estimate of copper content of the ore to be mined for this plant was 1.19 per cent, of which 0.77 per cent was as oxide and 0.42 per cent as sulfide. From the metallurgical results obtained at the 35-ton pilot plant, it was estimated that a 90.0 per cent extraction of the oxide copper and a 75.0 per cent extraction of the sulfide copper could be made. In technological studies on steel considerable emphasis has been placed on the identification of the foreign inclusions, testimony of which is adequately given in the metallographic literature covering methods for their identification. The outstanding accomplishment in this field is the scheme devised by Campbell, Comstock and Wohrman for identifying various oxides, sulfides, silicates and other constituents by systematic etching tests and microscopic examination.&apos; The time involved in carrying out this procedure has led to attempts to secure quicker methods, or at least to shorten the time required to secure essential information. An example of this is the use of dark field illuminatin,2 but when this was tried out by the authors it was found that cavities and pits on the polished surface appeared bright on a dark field and could not be distinguished from small glassy inclusions. Still another means is the Leitz Ultropak, an instrument equipped with optical units for the illumination of the specimen by reflected light to secure an effect similar to dark field illumination. The structures are made visible in exceedingly sharp details by utilizing the inherent properties of the samples, such as refractive index, absorption coefficients and reflection powers. We have had no experience with the Ultropak, but a recent paper by Benedicks and Löfquist3 describes methods for determining the refractive index of (Fe, Mn) O and MnS by the use of this equipment. Presumably this method would be subject to about the same limitations as dark field illumination, though the, feature added by Benedicks and Löfquist appears to offer great promise in inclusion identification.

"Since 1976, Cardinal River Coal s Ltd. has completed mining in eight pits. In each of these pits, at least one wall has failed, none by design, although not totally unexpected, yet there was no loss of production nor risk to personnel or equipment. Cardinal River Coals Ltd. has been successful in implementing a program to cope with failures and now feels justified in adopting more optimistic design parameters.The wall control program at Cardinal River Coals Ltd. is based on the premise that the walls are going to fail, monitoring is to confirm when. The program consists of monitoring slope movements and piezometric levels as well as structural mapping and visual inspections. In case of excessive movement, the frequency and intensity of the monitoring is increased. If a failure is impending, suitable remedial action is undertaken such as cutting down the crest, building up the toe, depressurization of the wall, artificial support, or a combination of the above. If remedial action is not possible, monitoring permits operations to continue up to near the time of failure.At the design stage, the emphasis is on identifying the potential failure mechanisms and the con sequences of failure. Once the potential failure mechanisms are identified, a monitoring system can usually be employed to give sufficient response time, and providing the consequence of failure is not severe and/ or remedial action can be taken to arrest the movements, then it is practical to mine pit slope s which have a higher probability of failure."

In the olden days the making of alloys was an art, and the secrete of the craft were jealously guarded. To-day it has become a science, though the old ideas in regard to the secrets and formulæ are dying hard. Modern progress may be attributed to scientific research and testing of materials, and the substitution of chemical analytical control for " cook-book " methods. We know to-day a great deal about the constitution of alloys, the reasons of the change in structure and physical properties by heat and mechanical treatment; and this new knowledge is due for the most part to the physical chemist and metallographist, who have shown us that alloys are simply solutions, and as such obey definite laws. The application of the theories of solutions and of the phase rule tells us what ought to happen when our alloys are in a state of equilibrium. The working-out of the temperature-composition diagram (thermal diagram) for numerous alloys has thrown a light on the structure and constitution which has dispelled most of the darkness in which we labored before the advent of metallography. The work began with the determination of the freezing-point curves, and here the research of Le Chatelier,&apos; Gautier,2 Roberts-Austen,3 and the other pioneers broke the ground. Next the physical chemists, Tammann,4 Rooseboom,5 Bancroft,6 and their colleagues, showed us the complete thermal diagram and its meaning. "A common practice in preventing gravity-fed tailing pipeline from plugging due to sanding is to add lime at relatively high dosage rates. The lime affects the rheology of the slurry ""vehicle"" which transports the coarser particles in a heterogeneous flow-regime. This paper describes a study of the effect of lime on the critical deposition velocities and friction head losses of Highmont Mining Company&apos;s mill tailing. Testwork using an extrusion viscometer was related to the surface chemistry changes brought about by the high lime additions. Lime additions which typically increased the tailing pH from 8.4 to 11.5 reduced the critical deposition velocities from approximately 3.2 to 1.7 m/sec.IntroductionCommon practice, at least in base metal concentrators in British Columbia, is to use high lime additions in tailing slurries when the pipeline becomes partially plugged with sands. Some concentrators, such as the Highmont Mining Co. Ltd. plant, add lime on a continuous basis during low tonnage periods and during startup/shutdown transition s. Although such high lime additions often solve temporary plugging problems, the effect of lime on slurry rheology has not been well understood.Slurry pipelines are designed to transport solids in suspension with a minimum of wear and without particle deposition. These two objectives are in opposition because the velocities required to maintain solid suspension can sometimes cause high head losses in the pipeline, as well as wear problems. Thus, the optimum velocity for a long distance slurry pipeline is in the range that provides just enough turbulence to keep coarse particles in suspension."

To determine whether 130 felt earth tremors around Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire U.M, which also experienced severe surface fissuring, were caused by coal extraction, a surface seismometer array was established around Thoresby Colliery. Over the next year, 785 microseismic events were detected. The spatio- temporal seismicity patterns are clearly associated with the commencement, continuing extraction and closure of faces. Of particular note are events which locate at the surface and appear to be related to the active fissuring. Events occur within days of commencement of production and cease when production finishes, with good correlation between face advance and hypocentral position. Naturally occurring microseismic events have also been detected up to 1 km ahead of active longwall faces in the Midlands using triaxial geophone packages grouted into the seam together with a surface seismometer in the top of the borehole. The quality of these data were very high and guided waves can clearly be seen with the dispersive characteristics associated with seam waves. In one experiment more than 2000 events were detected in only two days of monitoring even in a relatively noisy surface environment. This paper demonstrates how very accurate locations (5 10 metres) can be generated using three-component digital data from only one borehole. The surface seismometer and the borehole P-wave onset can give extra precision for the height of the event relative to the seam. The event distributions give a dynamic, three-dimensional image of the developing patterns of fracturing above, below and ahead of the longwall face with important implications for roof control, subsidence prediction and gas Migration.

"A mineralogical and trace element analysis was performed on the Küre historical slags in order to evaluate the possible recovery of copper and cobalt. Reflected light microscopy, electron microprobe and image analysis were combined to determine the Cu and Co distribution in the slag.The results indicate that 81% of the total cobalt is chemically combined in the fayalite whereas only 3.4% is in the mechanically entrapped sulphides. The remainder being in hercynite and wiistite. On the other hand, 95% of the total copper is in the sulphide phase.This kind of applied mineralogical investigation gives invaluable information when it is performed preliminary to metallurgical experiments.IntroductionThe recycling of metallurgical slags is a growing business. The operation is directed toward recovering base metals (Cu, Pb, Zn), and by-products (Floyd and Mackey, 1981).Two reasons are invoked to explain metallic losses in slags: (1) mechanical entrapment of matte globules in the silicate melt; and (2) chemically combined metals in the slag-forming phases. Obviously, a chemical analysis of the slag cannot distinguish between those two modes. Grinding and flotation of the liberated sulphides have often been used to evaluate the importance of mechanical entrapment (Mechev, 1970; Imris , 1982).Recent studies in applied mineralogy of pyrometallurgical products (Bérubé et al., 1987; Pignolet et al., 1986) have demonstrated the benefits of quantitative mineralogical analyses of slags. The continuing high-level performance of the domestic mineral and mineral fuels industries during 1966 was sustained by the longest business upturn in the Nation&apos;s history. Spurred by consumer demand at home and the defense production requirements of the Viet-Nam war, the rising trend of economic activity during the year was reflected in the upward movements of the major economic indicators. At yearend the gross national product (GNP), representing the value of all goods and services produced, stood at $740 billion, $58 billion greater than in 1965. Corrected for price changes, the real value of GNP in terms of 1958 dollars was $648 billion and represented an annual increase in economic activity of 5.4 percent. Some 74 million persons were employed during the year out of a total population of 196.8 million, while unemployment fell below 4 percent. The Federal Reserve Index of Industrial Production averaged 156 for 1966, up 13 points from the previous year. However a jarring note in the 1966 expansion, and one which affected the mineral industries in particular, was the increasing pressure on prices and the threat of inflation. From 1961-65 economic growth was facilitated by relatively stable wages and prices and only mild inflation. During the period average wholesale prices hardly moved while average consumer prices rose only about I percent per year. But this long run of relative price stability ended during 1966 when consumer prices rose 2.9 percent and wholesale prices were up 3.2 percent from the previous year.
