The Picher Mining District, located principally in north-eastern Oklahoma, was one of the world's largest lead-zinc mining areas during its 55 year life. The field covers an area of approximately 72 square miles (186 km.-); an estimated 1.6 x [103 yds3 of material (1.22 x 103m3)] worth in excess of one billion dollars, has been mined. Mining activities were typified by surface exploratory drilling identifying ore distribution and extension of underground workings to the lead and zinc deposits outlined. Exploration holes were either left unplugged or plugged at the surface with a section of a telephone pole. Low grade ore and waste rock were discarded in mined out portions of drifts. These waste piles containing pyrite and marquisette were left underground and oxidized during the many years of active mining. Upon cessation of mining activities in the mid-1960's, the drifts and shafts of the abandoned workings began to flood as the cone of depression filled in, leading to the dissolution of the oxidized sulfides and the formation of large volumes of acid mine water in the mined out openings. The resulting poor quality water, with high concentrations of cadmium, iron, lead and zinc, began discharging at the surface in 1979. Contamination of the underlying aquifer supplying local residents was first detected on a localized scale in 1980. The present surface water and ground water contamination have lead to the area being classified as one of the top ten hazardous waste sites in the U.S. by the EPA under the superfund program.

Demands on available lands will continue to increase due to the projected increase in population and industrial expansion. Though there is an upper limit on the available lands, the multi-use nature of the lands will make it possible to meet these demands. However, this will not happen without adequate planning. Land uses can be broadly categorized as non-renewable and renewable. Lands with mineable resources can be dedicated at some point in time to the extraction of resources. Such a dedication, however long-term, is only temporary because of the non-renewable nature of the mineable resources. Implied here is that the land will be available before and after mining for other uses. Planning for such lands must have the objective that, as far as practicable, no non-renewable uses are pre-empted and no renewable uses are permanently destroyed. The primary aspects of this planning process will be addressed in this paper, These aspects include a discussion of planning responsibility, data needs and availability, the integration of mine planning and post-mining land use planning and a long-term plan for resource conservation and utilization. Minerals, together with agriculture and forestry products, are the primary sources of wealth. Therefore, to avoid land development that may pre-empt future mineral resource utilization, the local planning groups must be aware of the mineralization and mining potential. Much work needs to be done to identify and characterize the mineral resources. Even more work is needed in land use planning for lands with mineral deposits.

PanAust Limited (PanAust) has successfully constructed and commissioned two mining operations in Lao PDR over the past decade and undertaken major studies for three new mine developments. The management of potentially acid generating mine waste and tailings in close proximity of local communities sensitive to water discharge quality have been recurring themes that have confronted PanAust’s project study, development and operational teams. Further compounding challenges, such as the effects of intense annual tropical monsoonal conditions, staging of embankment raises and regular lifting of spillway structures, integrating mine waste and tailings management into production plans and ensuring the long term stability of structures, have been addressed by implementing leading practice management solutions.A recognition of the criticality of managing the substantial business risks associated with these crucial activities led to the early establishment of a governance structure to ensure that the highest standards are embraced for planning and execution. Importantly, these are guided and monitored by a panel of highly experienced and qualified international specialists reporting directly to PanAust’s Managing Director – the Tailings Independent Review Panel. Based on our finding that commercial copper chelating solvent extractants such as LIX65N® and LIX63® are excellent collectors for copper minerals, a detailed study was made using several water-soluble chelating agents belonging to the class of aromatic hydroxyoximes and having a gradual structural variation. A basic study of the system salicylaldoxime-tenorite was also carried out. Microflotation tests as a function of concentration of oxime, pH, addition of copper etc., using oxidic copper minerals such as chrysocolla and tenorite, and batch laboratory flotation tests using synthetic mixtures of quartz and oxidic copper minerals were carried out. The studies were aimed at an understanding of the collector function of the hydroxyoximes and of the general flotation behavior in these systems, in addition to studying the structural aspects of oximes vis-a-vis flotation. The results have demonstrated that all of the hydroxyoximes studied here have comparable collector property, and in all cases the oxime was found to be partitioned between the mineral surface and the copper in the bulk aqueous phase in the form of a bulk copper chelate. The occurrence of the latter could be accounted for by the formation in the bulk phase of a chelate between oxime and copper released from the mineral and/or by the detachment of the surface chelate. The role of surface and bulk chelates in flotation is discussed based on the results of partitioning of chelating agent into bulk and surface chelates in the system salicylaldoximetenorite. The effect of substitution of CH2 groups or benzene ring in the chelating agent molecule on its collector property is also discussed, in addition to the finding that only the anti-isomer has the ability to collect.

Accurately predicting ground control conditions before mining requires a comprehensive exploration approach including photogeologic mapping (satellite and low altitude), delta modeling and, particularly, geophysical logging. In situ properties, density; strength indices; grain size; clay content; and aquifer location, can be estimated with this inexpensive technique. Geophysical measurements can be spot-checked by field or laboratory tests on core samples and by hydrologic (pressure) testing. Each phase of drilling should be accompanied by refinement of the delta model, facilitated by log signatures. Measured properties can then be projected into geologically similar areas. A properly planned program will delineate both the "worst-case" and normal support conditions. Suspect areas can be avoided by mine layout and the mine plan can contain support contingencies for anticipated trouble spots.

This paper describes the pumping operations at the Ajax, Cresson, and Vindicator dines in the Cripple Creek mining district of Colorado during the summer of 1936. At that time the three mines wore pumping 6,500 gallons of water per minute into the Roosevelt drainage tunnel. Cripple Creek is the most important gold district in the State; it has yielded gold valued at over $365,000,000. The mines engaged in pumping are among the largest producing properties in the district. During the last decade, there haven't been any great innovations in the design features of a copper concentrator. What has worked well in the past continues to work well, so that major breakthroughs have been minimal. Conservatism in the ranks also plays an important part. As a copper concentrator is not designed and built everyday, Davy was elated to have an important part in this project. This is the story of the design of the oracle Ridge Project located north of Tucson on the back of Mt. Lemmon at an elevation of 5,900 feet on the N.E. slope of the Catalinas. The Oracle Ridge property, formerly known as the Control Mine, is owned by Oracle Ridge Mining Partners, a joint venture between Continental Materials Corp. of Chicago and Union Miniere of Brussels, Belgium; both or¬ganizations specializing in the non-ferrous metal industry.

Information presented herein was gathered by examination of 29 fluidized- bed thermal coal dryers and by conferences with manufacturers and users of such equipment to determine what safety features could be incorporated in design, installation, and operation to minimize fire and explosion hazards. Fire and explosion hazards are inherent in certain types of coal dryers in that high temperatures are employed; the sizes and volatility of material handled are capable of propagating explosions; and drying gases are seldom, if ever, low enough in oxygen content to prevent ignitions of dust clouds, distilled gases, or their combinations. This is especially true for fluidized- bed dryers in which the coal is dried in air suspension and in which atmospheric air is constantly introduced to temper the heated furnace gases. Occurrence of fires on heated bedplates, in dust collectors, and in hot gas inlets was common in nearly all the dryers examined. Forceful explosions which produced external effects had occurred in 11 (39 percent), and internal "puffs" or "bumps" had occurred in at least 24 (79 percent) of the plants examined in the study.

Coal is deposited at a mine site in several thin seams which outcrop in rolling hills and dip at about 8° to the northeast. The deposit is located in the northeast area of the State of New Mexico in the Southwest of the United States. A drilling program was undertaken and was quite irregular. Not all of the seams appear in all of the drill holes. Some of the holes did not go deep enough, while others were drilled below the outcrop of some seams. Occasionally a seam would pinch out and not be seen in a drill hole. Also, the outcrops of the seams are buried in many places by several feet of alluvium. All of these factors make correlation of the seams between drill holes difficult. The drawing of cross sections in three directions and at many locations across the mining area have been necessary to assure the accuracy of the input data.

High-pressure grinding rolls subject the feed material to pressures of 200 N/mm? During this process considerable size reduction and the Formation of flakes occur. This paper describes the basic consideration For design and operating of this type of mill. It is also shown that the particle size distribution resulting from this process is typical for grinding processes but untypical for crushing processes. High pressure grinding rolls are designed in size of up to 2.8 m roll diameter allowing feed material top sizes of 250 mm. The rigid frame, bearing and drive - train design allows a broad application of the high-pressure grinding rolls operating the machine in open or semi-closed and closed circuit for dry and moist feed materials. Operating results show that capacity increases of up to 100 % can be accomplished with this technology. The high-pressure grinding roll also, allows for lower operating and maintenance costs due to energy savings of up to 20 L and reduction of wear to less than 1 76 for dry and less than 0.1 5 for wet grinding. Other advantages of the high-pressure grinding rolls are smaller equipment sizes than a ball or SAG-mill for a given capacity resulting in lower building sizes with reduced capital in- vestment costs.

For many years drilling and blasting has been considered more of an art than a science. This is still true in some respects, but today scientific approaches to drilling and blasting design must be used to plan an efficient operation which achieves desired fragmentation within constraints. These constraints involve minimizing damage to the wall or nearby permanent structures and avoiding undesirable fragmentation and mine dilution which can adversely affect operation costs. The degree of fragmentation by blasting is the most important single factor in any attempt to optimize the overall cost of the mining operations. The mining cycle begins with the drilling and blasting operations, which result in a given blasted rock size distribution. While this operation represents only about 20% of total mining costs, the efficiency and costs of the subsequent operations are strongly dependent on the fragment distribution obtained.

In today’s operating environment many conventional cleaner circuits struggle to produce final grade concentrate with acceptable levels of non-sulfide gangue and/or penalty elements. This is primarily due to poor selectivity and the entrainment of gangue, and is further exacerbated by the processing of lower grade ores with more complex mineralogy that require finer grinding for liberation. In new concentrators, the standard approach to cleaner circuit design is to define the number of stages of mechanical cells required to achieve the desired concentrate grade. Residence time is the primary factor to size cells and to determine the number of cells required to attain target recovery. While it is required for recovery, a bank of mechanical cells is not the ideal solution to maximise concentrate grade. Relatively coarse bubble size means slow flotation of fines, requiring long residence times. The combination of long residence times and no froth washing means higher entrainment as the pulp becomes more barren and froth stability decreases down a bank.In recent years, the Jameson Cell technology has been retrofitted into a number of concentrators around the world to solve both cleaner circuit capacity and concentrate grade issues. Jameson Cells have been installed at the head of conventional cleaner circuits to produce final grade concentrate in a single step of flotation using a single cell (referred to here as ‘cleaner scalping’ duty). The experience gained from these installations has provided the platform for the design of improved and simpler cleaner circuits that will perform better and be more robust to operate. This paper analyses traditional cleaner circuit designs and explains the philosophy behind new hybrid cleaner circuits, which use Jameson Cells to produce final concentrate and mechanical cells for a ‘cleaner scavenger’ duty. The advantages of the new cleaner circuit design are demonstrated by a case study from an operating plant. Engineering studies show that the better metallurgical performance can be achieved with less equipment than conventional cleaning designs, reducing capital cost, operating cost, and with more than 30 per cent energy savings.Finally, the paper describes simple modifications to the standard laboratory flotation test procedures which accurately simulate this new cleaner circuit using routine equipment.CITATION:Huynh, L, Araya, R, Seaman, D R, Harbort, G and Munro, P D, 2014. "Four main and three minor rare-earth-element (REE)-bearing minerals were identified and quantified in the Kiirunavaara apatite iron ore tailings using optical microscopy, an electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) and a mineral liberation analyzer, and their chemical compositions were analyzed by the EPMA and laser ablation inductively coupled plasmamass spectrometry. REEs are shown to be contained in the minerals apatite, monazite, allanite, titanite, zircon, thorite and synchysite. In zircon, thorite and synchysite, they occurred in only trace amounts and contributed limited amounts to the total REE budget, and these are consequently of minor importance. Monazite occurred as inclusions in apatite and as free particles, 90 percent liberated. Allanite occurred to some degree in mixed grains with magnetite but also as free particles. Monazite mainly reported to the apatite concentrate, while allanite and titanite largely went to the tailings, the latter preferably to those fractions smaller than 38 µm. The amount of titanite in the finest tailings fraction was 2.3 weight percent, containing close to 1 percent REEs, with heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) making up 28 percent of the total REEs. However, a texturally distinct group of titanite grains showed an HREE/REE ratio of up to 67 percent. Furthermore, titanum dioxide analyses indicate that titanite is preferentially released into the tailings from the secondary magnetic separation step in the concentrator. Our data therefore suggest that titanite, occasionally enriched in HREEs, can be extracted from the processing stream and might thus be considered a new source for REEs at Kiirunavaara and similar deposits.IntroductionDeposits of apatite iron ores are the major source for iron in the European Union and are exploited by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) in several mines in the Kiruna-Malmberget area in northern Sweden. Kiirunavaara is the largest of the apatite iron orebodies in Sweden, comprising more than 2 Gt of iron ore with 60 to 68 percent iron (Fe). At the end of 2015, the total accumulated production of crude ore from openpit and underground mining since the start of mining was 1,566 Mt, with ore reserves of 644 Mt grading 46.3 percent Fe (LKAB, 2016). The deposit defines a steeply dipping tabular body, approximately 6 km long and up to 180 m thick, extending at least 1,500 m below the surface. It is situated in the middle part of the Palaeoproterozoic Kiirunavaara Group of volcanic rocks and follows the contact between a thick pile of trachyandesitic lava and overlying pyroclastics (Martinsson, 2004)."

A new larger, more efficient and economical Mitsubishi furnace line at Naoshima was put into operation in May 1991. Naoshima Smelter had produced previously about 230,000 mtpy anode copper with two smelter lines, i.e., a conventional reverberatory furnace line and Mitsubishi furnace line, which had been shutdown at the same time of the start up of the new smelter. At the beginning of the operation, there were several initial problems at the area of off gas trains and feeding system. By overcoming them now the process has been continuing satisfactory operation at the design rate. The paper describes about the design concepts and the actual operation of the new smelter.

The use of the cyclone as a dense-medium cleaning device was first described by Driessen6/ in 1945, after development of the process in the Netherlands during the German occupation of World War II. A pilot plant was built in the Netherlands soon thereafter, and the first commercial plant was built in 1948. By 1958, 18 plants were operating or under construction.7/ Thus, economic factors in Europe, where the high cost of coal places a premium on efficient cleaning, dictated rapid adoption of the cyclone. American reception of the process differed. The Bureau of Mines presented the results of its own small-scale cyclone experiments in 1946;8/ showing a sharp separation between coal and impurity; adoption by industry now is taking place. There is now much greater emphasis on the efficient cleaning of fine coal, and the first American cyclone plant has begun operating; others are planned or under construction. With the present interest in improved treatment of fine coal, the Bureau of Mines felt that additional performance data on the cyclone would be helpful to industry. Therefore, a complete, open-circuit pilot plant was built to make cleaning trials on American coals covering a wide range of washability characteristics. Five raw coals and one middling product were included in the investigation, and each was cleaned at several densities; 17 cleaning trials are reported.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Carter Mining Co., conducted vibration tests of four off-road vehicle seats. The purpose of the tests was to determine which seat provided the best vibration attenuation under laboratory conditions. Laboratory tests were constructed to simulate the mining vibration environment within the limitations of the test equipment. The acceleration test levels and corresponding response of the seats were low compared to ISO 2631's fatigue-decreased-proficiency time limits. Two of the seats employed mechanical suspensions and two seats employed air suspensions. The seats were tested using a 22,241-N (5,000-lbf) electrodynamic shaker. Mechanical suspension seats were tested with various preload-to-mass ratios (PMR's) and cushion densities. Air suspension seats were tested with various air pressure levels and seat cushion densities. Air suspension seats provided good vibration attenuation if pressurized greater than 552 kPa (80 psi). Mechanical suspension seats' attenuation performance decreased if the PMR exceeded 9.8. Seat cushions of lower density provided less vibration damping.

A systematic, comprehensive, balanced approach is presented for underground coal mine design, capable of being standardized and generalized. This approach epitomizes professionalism and must preceed the physical product. Design involves a varied senior staff and requires extensive selective input data. Engineering follows a total systems approach, operating in and for a constricting geologic setting, heavily constrained for safety, health, and environmental protection. It must also anticipate execution and operation. Engineering prominence and momentum are maintained, with sub-optimizations balanced by judgments--the "art and science" of engineering. The flow-chart starts with organized input data: Company Capabilities, Property Description, Geologic Analysis and Reserve Analysis. Engineering combines Ground Control with Excavating and Bulk Handling to map feasible Mining Methods, the crucial Milestone Diagram. Layout and Sequencing follow, with numerous alternatives examined. Scheduling is performed on the best designs, using predicted advance (performance) rates. Active and mined-out areas are isolated into time-related parcels, or increments, for the mine life. Bulk Handling, Life Support (especially ventilation and drainage), and Normal Support systems occupy each parcel. Regulations are then checked. Management concerns are covered, and an Economic Analysis is performed for profitability. This and the design represent an Initial Tentative Solution. Continued iterations produce multiple and improved choices.

This report describes hydrogenation of petroleum distillate fuels in bench scale equipment and the effects of hydrogenation on the storage stability and the composition of the fuels. Two distillate fuels were hydrogenated in laboratory equipment using a commercially available cobalt molybdate catalyst. Reactor temperatures were varied from 600° to 850° F and pressures from 100 to 600 psig. Product fuels were analyzed by ASTM, Bureau of Mines, mass, and infrared methods. Hydrogenation of a catalytically cracked fuel from Oklahoma crude oil significantly improved the storage stability, reducing insoluble gum formed during 9 months of storage at 110° F from 19.0 to 1.3 mg per 100 ml fuel, average. Conversion of the olefins to other hydrocarbon types varied with the temperature of hydrogenation--at 700° to 850° F the conversion was mainly to aromatics, at 650° F about 50:50 to saturates and aromatics, at 600° F principally to saturates. Processing a fuel composed of a mixture of virgin distillate and catalytically cracked stock, both from Illinois crude, at 700° F and 200 psig effected marked improvement in stability; the buildup of insoluble gum in storage was lowered from 18.3 to less than 1 mg per 100 ml fuel.

The Custom Coals advanced coal cleaning plant will be designed with a unique blending of existing and new processes to produce two types of compliance coals: Carefree Coal? and Self-Scrubbing Coal?. Carefree Coal will be produced by cleaning the coal in a proprietary dense media cyclone circuit utilizing fine magnetite to remove up to 90 percent of the pyritic sulfur and correspondingly greatly reduce the ash. While may utilities can achieve full S02 reduction compliance with Carefree Coal, others face higher sulfur reduction requirements due to the higher sulfur content of their existing fuel supplies. For these circumstances, a patented Self-Scrubbing Coal will be produced by taking Carefree Coal and pelletizing limestone-based additives with the finest fraction of the clean coal. These technologies will enable over 150 billion tons of non-compliance U.S. coal reserves to meet compliance requirements.

Traditional aggregate sources, that is the riverbeds, the alluvial fans, located relatively close to the developing urban centers are being foreclosed to mining. As the sand and gravel reserves are depleted, those production plants are unable to secure additional adjacent reserves and are being forced to close down. The sand and gravel industry, in many respects, is its own worst enemy. We promote development, we promote the paving of streets, the building of houses, and industrial and commercial centers, and because of economics, we tend to favor those developments located close to our operations. Thus, we encourage development by our neighbors who soon become our detractors. In general, urban development is not compatible with sand and gravel mining. The neighbors don't like the view of the pits or the quarries, they complain about the "dust", about noise, about trucking . . . in general, the neighbors are not happy being close to an aggregate source.
