During the past few years, the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) examined and characterized conditions at a majority of the underground stone mines in the United States. Observations at these mines revealed a limited degree of roof monitoring beyond visual inspection and sounding. When monitors are used, they typically require the miner to measure movement at the roof. If conditions are unstable, the miner may be in a hazardous situation while recording data. Based on this scenario, researchers surmised that a simple, inexpensive monitor with the capability of recording data at a distance from the mine roof would be a safer way to gain the information. Additionally, more widespread use of monitors could potentially lead to better understanding of roof movement in general. A monitor to meet this need was designed, tested, and subsequently improved as experience was gained in its' use at a number of underground stone mines. The Roof Monitoring Safety System (RMSS) can provide an initial indication of movement in roof beams. By understanding and measuring roof movement in underground mines, the potential for injuries and fatalities to mine workers From falls of ground can be reduced. Also, officials at a mine with a history of data are better prepared to make a decision on remedial actions in the event of ground falls. This paper will outline the evolution of the RMSS and how it can be used in a comprehensive pro-active ground control safety program. Also included is a cast history describing how the RMSS was used in an evaluation of the effectiveness of a mechanical impact scaling machine at an operating limestone mine.

Carbon has long been recognized as one of the most powerful reducing agents in the deposition of ores. Investigations, made by myself, of the zinc- and lead-deposits in Southwest Missouri, in the region centering about Joplin, where the formation of the metallic sulphides has been due to the action of bitumen, carbonaceous shales and bituminous coal, have afforded abundant evidence that the solid oxygenated hydrocarbons, particularly when in fine powder and in suspension in the waters circulating through the ore-bodies, are the most energetic and powerful reducing agents known. Bitumen, liberated by the decomposition of the ore-bearing limestone, is found in the Joplin mines in all degrees of fluidity and hardness, dependent on the amount of oxidation it has undergone. From semi-fluid maltha it grades into partly oxidized mineral-pitch, which, by further oxidation, changes to hard asphalt, finally breaking up, from continued absorption of oxygen, into a fine powder resembling in appearance powdered coal. In this condition oxidized bitumen, from its light gravity, is transported readily in suspension in the underground circulating-waters. Austar Coal Mine (formerly Southlands and Ellalong Collieries) has had a long association with difficult strata control conditions associated with mining depth and a highly jointed/cleated coal seam. The conditions include poor longwall face conditions, cyclic loading, heavy tailgate (TG) roadway conditions, and difficulties in maintaining stable roadways on development at 5.2 m (17 ft), as well as the geotechnical challenges of an 8.5-m (27.9 ft) -wide roadway required for installation faces. The introduction of Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC) to this environment has aided in the management of some of these issues, but LTCC has also given rise to other geotechnical considerations. Additional geotechnical issues associated with LTCC not only require management during operations, but also require consideration when evaluating new mining areas at Austar Coal Mine or potential LTCC extractable resources throughout Australia and the world. In September 2006, LTCC commenced at Austar Coal Mine in longwall panel A1. Since this point the LTCC face has been increased from 147 to 216 m (482 to 709 ft)and finally to 227 m (745 ft) in width, and it has also been rehanded and modified in the three fully extracted panels to date. The application of LTCC in panels A1, A2, A3, and now A4 has been very successful, both from a coal resource recovery point of view and in the management of the principal hazards of spontaneous combustion and strata control. This paper focuses on the geotechnical aspects of the application of LTCC at Austar Coal Mine and also reviews some advances in general strata control management at the mine.

In the belief that a resume of what will be exhibited during this meeting, and a brief record of progress in the seven years which have elapsed since the Institute's first visit to Lake Superior would be interesting, the following statistical data have been prepared or copied from the most reliable sources, and considerations are also presented concerning the development or utilization of some of the resources of the Lake Superior Region. When the Institute, on the return trip from enjoying the charming panoramas of Thunder Cape or Isle Royale, and inspecting the unique development of Silver Islet, passed, in August, 1880, through the St. Mary's Falls ship canal, en route to Escanaba, the boat was lowered from the level of Lake Superior to that of Michigan and Huron lakes (18 feet), through two locks each 70 feet wide and 350 feet long, which had been in use since 1855. But as these locks accommodated vessels which drew 12 feet of water or less, a new lock 80 feet wide, 515 feet long and admitting vessels of 16 feet draught was approaching completion and was opened in September, 1881. The time required to pass the locks was utilized by the members in examining the work upon this new lock and in viewing the Sault Ste. Marie, which in discharging from Lake Superior all average volume of 90,783 cubic feet of water per second, forms a rapid, falling 18 feet in one mile. This investigation was undertaken at the suggestion of Prof. Henry M. Howe, of the Department of Metallurgy, Columbia University, who, in a letter to the author, dated October 23, 1900, wrote as follows, suggesting the subject of this dissertation : "The extraction of silver from copper mattes by either the Ziervogel or the Augustin process depends upon converting the silver into silver sulphate by means of the sulphuric anhydride evolved from the decomposition of ferrous sulphate and cupric sulphate, which are formed during the roasting operation itself from the iron and copper sulphides present. "It occurred to me, some time prior to the autumn of 1897, that these processes might be made much easier by adding to them, at the proper stage, ferrous or cupric sulphate, or both, in the form of green or blue vitriol. That is, instead of having to rely solely on our ability to generate these sulphates in this very delicate roasting operation, my idea was that we could add a small quantity of already-prepared sulphate at the proper state of roasting, viz., at or before the period when the solphatizing of the silver occurs. The comprehensive audit of the accounts of a mining company is extremely important in its relations to the legal situation and obligations of the corporation, the personal liability of the directors, and the interests of the investing public. A consideration of the subject as affecting the professional duties and fixing the responsibility of a mining engineer engaged in the expert examination of a mine or in charge of mining operations, is equally important, though this phase of the question is not often presented systematically.

The Precipitation of nitrides in quenched Fe-N alloys, aged between 25° and 200°C, was studied by transmission electron microscopy. Different dislocation substructures were introduced into the materials by recrystallization, cold working, and by Phase transformation prior to the introduction of nitrogen. It was found that the precipitated nitrides, tentatively identified as Fe16N2, have (100) habit planes. Nucleation takes place Preferentially at dislocations and at subboundaries. It sometimes occurs in the matrix, probably on vacancy clusters, but rarely on high-angle boundaries. The process of nucleation on dislocations and subboundaries is very temperature dependent. At room temperature there is no particular orientation relationship between the dislocations involved and the (100) planes on which the nitride Particles formed. With increasing temperature, the nucleation sites tend to become restricted to those dislocation segments lying in (100) planes. The change of yield stress of the 0.022 and 0.043 pet N alloys during quench aging can be correlated semiquantitatively with the change in particle distribution. Strain aging in quenched alloys can be separated into two stages. The early stage is attributed to nitrogen segregation to dislocations and the later stage is associated with precipitation. When previously quench-aged specimens were strained and aged, no additional Precipitates could be seen, although a considerable amount of strain aging occurred. INTRODUCTION Comminution is generally a feed preparation step for subsequent processing stages; exceptions being when a final product such as aggregates, specification sand, Portland Cement, and similar products is produced. Grinding, the fine product phase of comminution, requires a large capital investment and frequently is the area of maximum usage of power and wear resistant materials. Grinding is most frequently done in rotating drums utilizing loose grinding media, lifted by the rotation of the drum, to break the ores in various combinations of impact, attrition and abrasion to produce the specified product. Grinding media can be the ore itself (autogenous grinding -- primary and secondary), natural or manufactured non-metallic media (pebble milling) or manufactured metallic media -- steel rods, steel or iron balls. This chapter will discuss general mill design and the specific design and application of the following types of tumbling grinding mills. The simplest drive is the low speed synchronous motor with speeds in the range of 150 to 250 RPM connected to the mill pinion-shaft by either an air clutch or flexible coupling.

Existing reports on the effects of mine subsidence on water wells and springs appear to be inconsistent. Some report quick and complete recoveries to pre-mining conditions while others indicate long-term or permanent effects. It is clear that topographic and geological factors as well as precise position with regard to the mine are important in determining probable effects of subsidence on aquifers. Ridgetop aquifers which are well above regional base-level are much more susceptible to disturbance by mining activities than those located topographically lower. Effects seen are attributed largely to increased permeability, both horizontal and vertical. of the aquifer rocks. The deeper aquifers usually show short term losses or water-table declines. but the effects on the ridge-top aquifers persist for longer periods or may be permanent. Subsidence enhances permeability. so that infiltrating water moves much faster to lower levels. causing pond and stream losses and declining levels in wells as well as declining flows of springs of the higher aquifers, while increasing levels and flows of the lower aquifers. Additional effects are shifts of spring locations caused by minor tilts due to differential subsidence and redirection of shallow flows by changes of horizontal fracture permeability. These effects are seen as mining of a panel progresses beneath the site. and are often repeated when adjacent panel mining fronts pass the site. Analysis of water well level and spring flow records indicates that the effects are greatest at the edges of longwall panels in the tensional regime. These effects are amplified for locations close to topographically steep terrain and in close proximity to fracture traces mapped from medium-to small-scale aerial images.

Slimes are usually defined as all material passing a certain sized sieve, which is invariably the finest sieve employed by each metallurgist in his tests; 100-mesh and 200-mesh have been taken as the limits by different writers in recent volumes of the Transactions; 150-mesh is common practice. The reader of the first two volumes of Richards' is impressed by the inflexibility with which all grinding-arrangements are praised or condemned according as they make little or much slime. Until recently, one of the principal aims of the mill-man was to keep down the slimes. He was obliged to have separate apparatus for sand- and slime-treatment. The latter was sometimes puzzling and erratic. Often it was found most economical to omit treatment of the slimes entirely, or to store them in immense basins or heaps, waiting for possible future improvements in methods of treatment. Recently, improved processes of agitation and filtration have made possible the successful extraction of values from many slimes. The tendency, when the metal is exceedingly finely disseminated, is to cut out all sand-treatment and to slime everything. These processes have been almost entirely mechanical in their conception, and it is the object of the present paper to show that certain chemical considerations may greatly hinder or assist their successful operation. It has long been a source of dissatisfaction to chemists that their analyses fail to be of much help to the clay-worker; that it is a matter of common occurrence for clays of closely identical ultimate chemjcal constitution to show the widest possible divergence in physical properties.

"Batch flotation testwork demonstrated that a low-grade chromite ore from Bird River, Manitoba, was best floated at pH 2 using Armac C (coco amine acetate) collector and sulphuric acid as pH modifier. A grind of 100% minus 150 um was necessary for liberation, and flotation selectivity was greatly enhanced by prior desliming. A concentrate analyzing 24.2% Cr203 with a recovery of 90.2% was obtained, after three cleaning stages, from ore grading 6.05% Cr203. Total rougher collector concentration was 500 g/t and cleaner collector concentration 380 g/t. Similar grade and recovery were obtained during the pitot-plant evalualion, when a concentrate analy zing 22.3% Cr203 with a recovery of 93% (based on deslimed feed) was obtained for a total collector addition of 630 g/t.Selective flotation in a region of positive surf ace charge implies anionic activation, and a possible flotation mechanism is suggested.IntroductionIn an earlier study(1) of the beneficiation of chromite ore from Bird River, Manitoba, several methods of beneficiation were explored. These included ore sorting, heavy-media separation, and gravity concentration with flotation using Armac C (coco amine acetate) collector at pH 2, and sulphuric acid as pH modifier. Because flotation was not fully evaluated, a laboratory study was undertaken to determine the optimum parameters of chromite flotation. Optimization of parameters was established first on a laboratory scale followed by confirmation a t the pilot -plant level. Flotation of chromite using Armac C and sulphuric acid as a pH modifier has been reported as being selective for low-grade chromite ores(2)."

Although there is now an extensive literature on the bleaching clays, not a great deal of material is to be found concerning the geological features of these deposits and their bearing on problems of exploration and development. At the same time, chemical and crystallographic research on the clay minerals during the past few years has laid a suitable foundation upon which to base conclusions of economic value drawn from field observations. All of the criteria and deductions herein presented are based upon extensive field work by the senior author, both in the United States and Canada, and when .subjected to the ultimate tests of development and exploitation they have held up remarkably well, despite the fact that many of these conclusions apparently have not been reviewed in the literature heretofore. The nomencelature of the bleaching clays is rather confusing in the light of present-day commercial standards and has even led to litigation.'" The old term "fuller's earth" is largely based upon trade usage and the definition of the term therefor? is dependent upon the changing standards of commerce. For statistical purposes the Bureau of Mines8' classes as "fuller's earth" all natural bleaching or filtering claylike materials that possess high adsorptive capacity without previous chemical treatment or activation. Conversely, the so-called activated or acid activated clays are now generally recognized as any clay mineral or mixture of the clay minerals whose adsorptive capacity has been developed to commercial standards by chemical or physical treatment. Therefore, without attempting to propose any additions to the nomenclaturc: of bleaching clays, this paper will refer to naturally adsorptive clays and activable clays, respecbively, for the two types indicated.

PAPERS by D. B. Scott, E. G. Deane, and J. H. Hensley, Jr.1 describe the succession of mining methods used in the Miami mine—squarelset system, shrinkage stoping, top-slicing method, and the undercut caving system which was then being used, and which embraced the use of finger raises. The last-named system worked well but when the rich ore was exhausted it became necessary to reduce costs so as to make available a low-grade ore containing an average of less than 0.9 per cent. total copper with less than 0.8 per cent. in sulfide form and with no precious-metal values. There was then developed for this low-grade ore the system of separate large block-caving stopes, in lateral dimensions 150 by 300 ft., or 150 by 150 ft., with intervals between stopes of the same size so that subsequently these pillars may be similarly mined. The results have been most favorable. Under the previous system the production of ore per man-shift for all underground labor was 8 tons. The present production per man-shift underground is 28 tons. In starting this work the problems were: 1. How the ground would cave above the stopes. 2. Whether in the first stopes caving would encroach on the pillars as laid out. 3. Whether in subsequent mining of the pillars waste filling would be drawn from the previously caved adjacent stopes. ASTERISM appearing in X-ray Laue dia-grams is an extremely sensitive index of changes in the internal structures of indi-vidual grains of polycrystalline metals. It indicates the existence of various forms of subboundary structure or subdivision within the grain. The present viewpoint is that the grain is made up of lattice blocks having substantially the same size and shape.1-4 When these blocks all assume exactly the same orientation, the crystal is perfect and asterism is absent. Cleaves and Thompson5 observed that the hardness of iron is virtually constant over a range of grain sizes. It is quite possible that the subboundary structure caused this, and that the latter is just as important as grain size itself. While the experiments reported here are not con-clusive, they do support this viewpoint. Metals can, under certain conditions, be prepared entirely free from asterism, but this preparation does not necessarily require long heating or slow cooling, as will be shown here. In this paper a distinction is made be-tween mosaic and distorted grain struc-tures but the difference is only a matter of degree. In a previous paper9 it was shown that the grains can become distorted even during heat-treatment. The block structure exists inherently, even in a perfect crystal; the size and shape of these crystallites, or lattice blocks, varies, depending upon a number of factors. Goetz, for example,7 has shown that a metal before crystallizing from the molten state must go through a paracrystalline phase with oriented groups of atoms about 10-14 to 10-15 c.c., or 10-5 cm. in size.

"The selective precipitation of iron as ammonium jarosite is a well-established industrial technology in base metals hydrometallurgy. It is a key technology in minimizing iron tenors which would be disruptive to downstream processing. It also provides a more readily filterable iron solid to better facilitate materials handling. This paper elucidates the fundamentals behind industrial iron precipitation. Then, the details of the successful optimization of an industrial ammonium jarosite circuit are presented.HYDROMETALLURGICAL IRON REMOVAL FUNDAMENTALS Iron is the fourth most abundant element in the Earth’s crust (5% by weight) and is often found in complex ores such as sulphide-bearing formations. Iron represents an issue though during leaching, a technology which is widely used for the treatment of this type of ore: •,Iron has the particularity of forming hydroxides when leached under certain conditions. Iron hydroxides form a viscous gel, which is difficult to filter and traps valuable elements such as silver. •,Iron is solubilized along with other metals and interferes with the subsequent extraction steps. As a result, purification of the pregnant leach solutions is required to achieve economical extraction of base metals. In the 1960s, metallurgists developed iron precipitation processes for solution purification (Habashi, 1999). Nowadays, precipitation of iron bearing species, such as goethite, hematite or jarosite, has become one of the most common methods used in the industry to purify leach liquors. To be suitable, the precipitate has to be readily filterable and thus must not be too fine of particle size. Precipitation can take place in autoclaves at medium to high temperatures, under an oxygen or air overpressure (Tourre, 1984, Fleuriault 2016, Fleuriault Anderson Shuey, 2016))."

MR. DAVIS: When the Secretary asked me to continue our accident experience in safety work at Dawson to cover the year just closed, I rather felt that he was asking 'a good deal, for we had said about everything that we could last year. I am not going to say very much, but in line with his request I have merely brought the figures up to date. I want to say, to start, that 1934 was, rather disappointing. It was the poorest year since 1930, as you will notice (indicates on diagram). This first column represents the accidents per thousand shifts worked. We cannot assign any real valid reason for the increase. We think we worked just as hard, but we are rather inclined to lay it onto the times; in other words, to lay it to the unrest and the changing conditions that are existent not only in this country but probably all over the world. We had twelve lost time accidents last year. As I explained last year, a lost time accident with us is an accident wherein the injured man is not able to return to his regular work, the next day-the day following the injury. So this represents (indicating) the lost time accidents per thousand shifts worked. We had one fatality in the twelve accidents which is reflected in the severity rates, which are also based upon thousand shifts worked instead of per million hours. The reason we are on the thousand shifts worked is be¬cause the Copper Branches of the Phelps-Dodge Corporation are all kept that way, and we are on the same basis for easy comparison.

"Northgate Patino Mines produces a copper concentrate assaying 22% Cu. Moisture content of the product averages 12.5% H20 when dewatering with conventional vacuum disk filters. Recent smelter contracts reflect higher energy costs and increased moisutre penalty charges. This situation forced Northgate to investigate possible alternatives such as rotary dryers and pressure filtration. After laboratory testing, it was found that pressure filtration could economically meet the smelter's requirements. Pilot plant testing was then undertaken and confirmed the laboratory test results. Based on these findings, a model I.S.F. 1500 x 28/22 I.R. Lasta filter press was purchased.This paper describes the Copper Rand dewatering flowsheet the operation of the press and the economics of the process.IntroductionNorthgate Patino Inc. operates 2 und erground copper mines and a 3300 ton per day concentrator located in Chibougamau, Quebec, some 425 miles north of Montreal and 300 miles northeast of Noranda, Quebec.Copper concentrate is produced at a rate of 250 tons per day and trucked to a C.N. siding 10 miles from the mill site and then railed to the Noranda Smelter.Until early 1981, moisture content of the concentrate at 12.5070 was acceptable since smelter penalty charges were relatively low ($0.10 per ton per unit over 10070 moisutre). In January 1981, a new contract was signed in which the penalty was raised to $1.10 per ton per unit over 8070 . This and the increasing truck and rail costs justified the change-over from vacuum to pressure filtration . The Lasta I.S .F. 1500 x 28/22 was then purchased and installed, and operation of the plant started in December 1981."

[Notwithstanding the fact that it is now fairly generally recognized that widespread explosions can be almost absolutely prevented in coal mines by efficient rock-dusting and that this rock-dusting can be done thoroughly at a cost which should seldom exceed 1 cent per ton of coal mined, a recent survey of the situation by the Safety Division of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, following a similar survey by the Bureau in the fall of 1925, shows that while some progress is being made by our coal-mining people, many entire mining communities are lamentably slow in taking advantage of one of the most effective safeguards available. Much of the information as to the extent of rock-dusting was obtained through the various State inspection departments. Table 1 shows that in the fall of 1925 about 92 coal companies in the United States were using rock-dust ad that in the summer of 1927 the number had increased to 239, or about 160 per cent increase. Similarly, from the fall of 1925 to the summer of 1927 the number of mines using rock-dust increased from 177 to 463, or about 160 per cent increase. This appears to be a decidedly healthy increase, but when it is considered that in 1926 (the last date for which figures are available) there were 7,141 bituminous mines operating and that there were only 463 or 61 par cent, which were even reported to Ice using rock-dust to any extent whatever, the forgoing figures as to progress are by no means impressive or even satisfactory.]

THE discovery that strongly magnetic bodies localized near the surface of the earth could be detected by the distortion which they produced in the resultant magnetic field marked the beginning of magnetic surveying methods. From an original ability to detect bodies of magnetic iron ore and the like when located very close to the, surface, these methods have been extended until today they promise to give much information with regard to the structure of such slightly magnetic material as sedimentary rock containing only a very small proportion of iron.1 The recent extensions have been made possible through the development of more delicate instruments, and of methods for their use. From the original compass and dip needle, the design of apparatus has progressed until equipment Is typified by magnetic balances capable of measuring the components of the earth's field to an extremely high degree of accuracy. It seems unlikely that the limit of such instrumental development has been reached. Just as the change from compass and dip needle has enabled the location of relatively minor changes in magnetic materials, so additional developments in the direction of increased sensitivity, as well as in greater dependability and constancy of operation, should reveal positively many slight changes which either escape notice in the present surveys or are so small that they cannot with certainty be separated from uncontrollable errors due to inconstant operation of the equipment. The ability to read smaller and smaller variations does not mean, of course, that deductions as to the causes of these variations will be made as accurately and definitely as -is possible with the more pronounced anomalies.
